A spokesperson for the Department told On Our Selection News that this could help determine the need for additional schools. “In early 2021, a key local developer in the Westbrook area publicly announced a delay to its master planned residential development for an indefinite period of time,” the spokesperson said. “The Department is continuing to monitor this area closely to understand how this may impact the demand for new schools.” However it appears that a new school for the west/south western sector of urban development could be a way off. Harristown State High School, which serves the area concerned, has built capacity for 2,517 students and had enrolled 1,821 students at last official count in August 2021. Student enrollment had increased by 10.23 per cent from 2017 to 2021. Primary schools at Wyreema and Cambooya have seen significant increases in enrollment in recent years. From 2016 to 2020 Wyreema student numbers increased by 45.87 per cent and Cambooya by 26.28 per cent. In that same period, Drayton State School saw a decrease of 18.25 per cent in enrollments. The spokesperson said the Department of Education conducts ongoing planning for new schools, and is actively involved in cross-sectoral demand mapping activities through the Queensland Schools Planning Reference Committee (QSPRC). Rain, flash flooding inundates district
Rain gauges, waterways and swimming pools were overflowing from Friday into the weekend last week following sustained heavy rainfall. A man had to be rescued by good Samaritans after his vehicle was stuck in rising flood water on Old Wyreema Road over Westbrook Creek. Emu Creek had swollen to at least a width of 50m at the crossing of Greenmount Etonvale Road by 4pm on Friday and likely got worse as the day went on. The bridge crossing Hodgson Creek at Cambooya was also submerged and littered with debris, as were many other roads around the district. Residents of the Toowoomba Region impacted by flooding are eligible for a number of government financial support payments of at least $1000 per person. The easiest and quickest way to claim the Disaster Recovery Payment or the Disaster Recovery Allowance is online through myGov. Those requiring support to claim, can call the Australian Government Emergency Information Line on 180 22 66.

Project boosts veg biosecurity prep
The AUSVEG Farm Biosecurity Project, a collaboration between AUSVEG and Plant Health Australia (PHA), continues to improve preparedness and response capability to manage biosecurity risks for the vegetable and potato industries. The second phase of the two-year project funded through the National Vegetable and Potato Levies, kicked off in July 2021, after the successful completion of the first phase. The project is scheduled to conclude in June 2023. The key differentiator in the second phase of the project is the increased focus on the role and importance of urban biosecurity, with emphasis on research, development, and extension (RD&E) programs and farm biosecurity. Farm biosecurity is integral in protecting production areas from harmful plant pests, diseases, and weeds with on-farm biosecurity practices playing a pivotal role in maintaining Australia’s reputation of producing high quality products. Dr Mila Bristow, Plant Health Australia General Manager, Partnerships and Innovation, said farm biosecurity is often perceived as too complex to implement or unnecessary by plant industries. “Since future exotic pest incursions are inevitable, it is crucial to strengthen the resilience of biosecurity practises,” Dr Bristow said. AUSVEG Biosecurity coordinator, Callum Fletcher, In the first six months, the program has raised awareness of presenting to a room full of horticultural growers in priority pest threats amongst growers and industry, increased the use of on-farm biosecurity practices, provided practical Gympie last year. information for the improvement of on-farm biosecurity, and “A key success factor of the project is to create a better integrated on-farm biosecurity measures. understanding of the shared responsibility to improve industry biosecurity resilience through increased levels of onfarm preparedness measures that can easily be implemented by growers to gain better protection for their crops and livelihoods,” she said. The project also aims to increase biosecurity risk preparedness and response mechanisms by working with industry, state and territory governments and the Australian government to strengthen biosecurity awareness and reporting and improve communication of pest issues and threats. Australia has seen an increased investment in biosecurity with over $400 million in new funding to support reforms to ensure the biosecurity system is able to respond to the growing global threat of exotic pests and diseases. In the 2021-22 financial year, vegetables contributed 8.35 per cent of the gross value of production in Cambooya/Wyreema.

Patching for Cambooya Connection Rd potholes
Regular travellers on Cambooya Connection Road will be pleased to hear, at least in the short-term, that potholes on the road are set to be patched this month. A spokesperson for the Department of Transport and Main Roads, the body that maintains the road, said there are plans to undertake pothole patching and isolated repairs on Cambooya Connection Road between Eton Street and Harrow Street. “Patching potholes is an ongoing maintenance activity that is undertaken when weather and resources allow. “Further repairs are planned between Strand Road and Harrow Street for 2022-23, with a full reseal planned for this section in 2023-24,” the spokesperson said. The spokesperson said the department has not received any reports from the public about the condition of Cambooya Connection Road, including potholes or requests for repairs. ABOVE & BELOW: The potholes on Cambooya Connection Road in town were dangerous even before heavy rain last week, which made them even worse.

Walking towards a better future
After nine days of scavenger hunting, the 2022 Hike to Heal, raising money in support of the counselling services of Lifeline Darling Downs and South West Qld, has concluded. The week-long fundraising campaign officially began at Mount Peel Nature Reserve between Westbrook and Drayton on Saturday morning, 19 February. Guests at the event launch included Lee Faulkner from Triple M, CEO of Lifeline Darling Downs Grant Simpson, Deputy Mayor of the Toowoomba Region Geoff McDonald and a few of his fellow councillors. Welcome to Country was delivered by Dr Raelene Ward and there was a blessing by pastor Nathan Glover from Emmanuel Lutheran Fellowship. A large number of Toowoomba residents, as well as visitors from as far as Emerald and the Gold Coast, hiked the trails on Mt Peel and enjoyed the challenge of solving “What am I?” quizzes and photo challenges. Debbie and Robert Kendal who were visiting from the Gold Coast said it was a wonderful way to spend a day out with family and friends and enjoy the beautiful parks of Toowoomba. The week-long event enables registrants to select a time, day and trail that suits their individual preference and the prevailing weather conditions. Participants take steps towards improving their own well-being while supporting early intervention and suicide prevention programs.

Digital licences coming
A contract to deliver the Digital Licence App has been signed, paving the way for Queensland digital drivers licences in 2023. This follows a successful trial of the app in the Fraser Coast in 2020. Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the Fraser Coast trial was a resounding success, with users reporting a 94 per cent satisfaction rating during the testing. “What we’re doing here is creating a modern, innovative solution that adopts international bestpractice solutions and has the privacy of data front of mind.” Mr Bailey said the next stage of the roll out would see the Digital Licence App trialled in the Townsville region later this year. “The app is being upgraded based on feedback from the Fraser Coast pilot, as well as adding new functionality and options to make sure we are meeting the needs of the people who use it,” he said. Mr Bailey said the Digital Licence App would comply with an international standard, which means Queenslanders would be able to use it around Australia and overseas. “A new standard for mobile driving licences was published in 2021, and our app will comply with this standard, giving Queenslanders greater freedom and convenient options to use their Digital Licence when travelling,” Minister Bailey said. RAIN Well what a few days it has been with over 300mm of flooding rain in Hodgson Vale. How things can change so quickly, pandemics then floods. The driveway culvert to the sports club has been undermined and has sharp drop offs so the driveway is closed for vehicular traffic at present until it can be assessed and repairs made. Although the rains have caused some damage there were some nice scenes around locally with waterfalls and some nice creek scenes. It also meant that the local kids could get their boogie boards out instead of the skateboards and enjoy some riding of the rapids and slide down the slopes. FUNCTIONS, IRISH NIGHT We have reviewed the situation with the recent rapid spread of Covid and at this stage we will be resuming both private and club functions in early March. The first function will be our annual Irish night on Friday the 11th of March which is prior to the 17th. There will be the usual Irish Stew, Guinness and Kilkenny and little bit of the Baileys. Wear your best Green outfit for the night and there will be a prize for the best dressed male and female. This is all dependent on any Covid health related changes that might occur between now and then. BOOKINGS Any future bookings after the 1st of March will be subject to Covid restrictions and may have to be cancelled at short notice if government Covid rules require this. Discounts apply for financial members who hire the facility. Greenmount State School
What an amazing start to the year the students at Greenmount State School have had. DAISY BEGINS HER SCHOOLING LIFE We welcomed Daisy to our P to 2 classroom, although she has been an active member of our school for some time and she has taken to life as a preppie like she has always been in our school. Daisy loves being at school. She loves Science and learning about the world. She enjoys playing tennis, skipping at lunch times and playing with students across the year levels. Daisy intends on being a teacher and a dancer and a doctor and a vet…. All at the same time. NEW TEACHER We have welcomed Mr Slone as our new instrumental teacher and Thursdays are abuzz as our students extend their musical capabilities. We look forward to hearing our year 4 to 6 students continue to find their musical groove.

IN THE CLASSROOM (AND OUTDOORS!) Biology is a science focus this term and our P to 2 students have been busy uncovering all things living. They have become backyard explorers in the quest to find out more. In the 3 to 6 room we are underway with our ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ challenge and are hypothesising and testing our plant living conditions before we uncover more about microorganisms. It has been beautiful weather to take our classes outside as much as possible and our year 3s in particular have used the outside to become angle investigators. We have enjoyed reading outdoors and chilling out with Deltora and The BFG. SWIMMING STARS We would like to congratulate Brooklyn, Paige, Riley and Sam on their efforts at Central Downs swimming, for their PBs, their selection for a range of events at Southern Downs and to Riley for age Champion and Brooklyn for runner up in their respective age groups.
LEFT & ABOVE: Students at Greenmount State School have had a great start to 2022.

OPERATION BACKPACK Thanks to Milestones Childcare Centre in Westbrook for organising “Operation Backpack” before the return to school. This is a great way to build community partnerships with childcare providers in our local community. We received lots of school essentials and lunchbox goodies that have benefited students who may otherwise not had school supplies at the beginning of the school year.
