A very happy first birthday

It is a year since Shane and Tracy Smith did something quite special for the community of Westbrook buying the supermarket that had recently closed its doors, and offering all the previous staff employment. The benefits were twofold - the community got to keep its local supermarket and a team of hardworking locals kept their jobs either at The Local Grocer, Westbrook or at the Smiths’ other IGA supermarket, at nearby Pittsworth. The couple’s son, Andrew, joined them as a partner in the

Westbrook business while daughter Jess is also very involved in the family business. On Friday they celebrated with staff and cut a huge iced cake made in the bakery of the Pittsworth store which supplies all the fresh bread, pastries and cakes to the Westbrook store. After buying The Local Grocer last year, the Smiths undertook a refurbishment and expanded the fresh offerings and the deli range as well as adding a gluten-free range. They have continued to operate the takeaway food outlet.

Cambooya State School completed its NAIDOC week celebrations this year with a parade. The Year 4 class presented all of their learnings about our indigenous peoples to the school. This information included the 2022 theme and an explanation, symbols, famous indigenous people and dreaming stories, just to name a few. To complete the parade we had a special presentation from Mr Warren Moody, his son Hunter and nephew Corben (both Year 4 students), who played the didgeridoo for us. It was a fantastic experience for the students and a great way to finish off our NAIDOC week. Year 5 and 6 students were also lucky enough to attend Cobb and Co museum in Toowoomba to experience the “Have another look Captain Cook” program. This program allowed them to experience a smoking ceremony, indigenous games, spear throwing and indigenous stories along with many other opportunities. Cambooya has had a very rich NAIDOC week for 2022.

Nobby State School celebrates 125th

On the 15th November 1897, the first students rocked up to the new Nobby State School, signalling the start of one of the most successful small schools in the local area with students still achieving at the school in 2022. As well as having a good academic record, Nobby is a school that knows how to turn on a great event for its community so locals are looking forward to the celebration. It’s planned to stage the 125th anniversary event on Saturday 12th November. Officially the programme will start at 10am and run until 4pm, but past students will be able to register at the school from 9.30am. The morning will include a couple of performances by current students. There will be one performance at 10.30 and about an hour later the music teacher will lead a further performance. Also during the morning, current teaching staff will be conducting tours around the school, no doubt bringing back some memories for many. Official formalities will take place at 12.30pm, which will include the cutting of an anniversary cake, to be followed by a call of the rolls between 1pm and 1.30. Students will present more entertainment at 2.30 and it’s planned to stage a duck race in the school pool at 3.30. Nobby Hall will become the focal point at 4pm when a bush dance will be happening until about 5.30pm with food and a bar in operation. Nobby P&C Association has called on any past families of

Beware of dams, ponds drowning risk

New research by Royal Life Saving shows dams, ponds and irrigation channels are a significant risk to drowning. In the past 19 years, 60 per cent of all drowning deaths have been in regional and remote Australia. An average of 168 people annually drown in regional and remote Australia. With flooding wreaking havoc on properties across Australia, the immediate risks from flood water are not the only drowning risk on farms, Royal Life Saving Society – Australia has warned. Royal Life Saving’s National Manager - Research & Policy, Stacey Pidgeon said people are aware of the risks posed by flooding and tend to take precautions when floods are peaking, or during the cleaning up period, but they forget the everyday risks. Dams can be fraught with danger for those not properly “Swimming pools can be fenced, but it’s not that easy when prepared. you’ve got irrigation channels, dams, or ponds,” Ms Pidgeon “If something unexpected happens and you fall into the said. water having someone who can respond straight away can “However, there are some low or no cost safety precautions literally be the difference between life and death. that people can take on their farms to reduce the risk of She also suggests not swimming alone. drowning. “With all the wet weather that we’ve had across Australia, “If you have young children, having an enclosed child erosion has changed the conditions and previously safe safe play area close to the house so they can’t wander off is swimming places might no longer be suitable.” important. “Put up close the gate signs as that visual prompt to make sure visitors don’t accidentally leave an access way open. Fifth generation grain and cotton grower Arthur Gearon from Chinchilla has been appointed as the new chair of the Grains Research and Development Corporation’s (GRDC) Northern Region Panel. Mr Gearon manages a family farming enterprise with his parents, Paul and Naureen, and his wife Nikki. Before joining the GRDC regional panel, Mr Gearon was the vice-president of AgForce Grains, a peak organisation representing Queensland’s rural producers. He has been an active member of the Northern Region Panel since 2015 and most recently deputy chair. “It will be challenging, but I am honoured to be taking over from John Minogue, he has been an outstanding and engaging chair,” he said. Mr Gearon will take on the Northern Region Panel chair role on September 1.

Feedback sought on infrastructure plan

Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) wants public feedback on an interim amendment to the Local Government Infrastructure Plan (LGIP) endorsed in July. TRC Planning and Development committee chair Cr Megan O’Hara Sullivan said public feedback on the interim amendment opened on Monday and closes on 19 August. “The LGIP identifies trunk infrastructure (water, wastewater, stormwater, transport, public parks and community facilities) that is required to service urban development at the desired standard for future communities,” Cr O’Hara Sullivan said. “The LGIP is Council’s financial commitment to the community and the Queensland Treasury Corporation for the sustainable provision of critical urban infrastructure to service our Region’s future urban growth.” Cr O’Hara Sullivan said the interim LGIP amendment was part of Council’s ongoing administration of its trunk infrastructure program across multiple growth fronts. TRC Planning and Development Committee portfolio leader Cr Bill Cahill said in addition to undertaking the interim LGIP amendment in the short term, Council was working on a comprehensive update of the LGIP as part of the preparation of a new planning scheme. This is due to be completed in 2025. Cr Cahill said this would result in a plan to efficiently cater for the projected population and employment growth across the Region. Polo season finishes

The Downs Club hosted the 30th anniversary Sapphire Shield Polo Carnival last weekend. This tournament was started by Hugh Fisher in Goondiwindi in 1992 and moved to Clifton in 2001. Blessed by fine weather and a large number of teams it turned out to be a magnificent finale to the Downs Polo Club Tournament season. After 2 days of very competitive polo the finals were played with C grade winners being the Rosewood team of the Skerret brothers Beau and Simon with Paul MacGinley and Lauch Leishman. The B Grade was won by Downs Raff with Richard Marchant, Club President Haydn O’Leary, Angus Gunn and Derek Gilmore. The A Grade final was a very tough match finally won by the Downs Hooper Accountants team of father and son combination of Stuart and James Hoey, Damian Allport and Jack Mantova. The Downs team overcame a very strong Fitzhenry Polo team comprising Mike Roberts, Aiden Nunn and brother and sister duo of Bingham and Philipa Fitzhenry. A Grade Champion Pony won Aiden Nunn and A Grade champion team of ponies won by James Hoey. The club and Toowoomba Regional Council deserve a great deal of credit for providing a fantastic field which has had 32 matches played on it over the last three weekends and still provided a magnificent surface for today’s final. There is probably no other field in Queensland that would be able to handle this amount of traffic. The club would like to thank everyone who has supported us throughout the year. - Gary Hoey Publicity Officer

The hospice says it will use the money to install a new nurse call system which is effective and sensitive to the needs of patients reaching their end-of-life stage. The new nurse call system is called the Rauland Buzzer system which minimises disturbance to other patients by avoiding loud buzzer sounds and emergency pull cords. Green machine inspires Wattles victory

An inspiring performance by Jackson Green guided Wattles Warriors to a 25–6 victory in Sunday’s clash with joint top of the table combatants and Madsen-Rasmussen Trophy mid-season champions the Highfields Eagles. In what is highlighted as Green’s best game of this year, he was named Lee Group Electrical Player of the TRL’s Round 15 after engineering a mighty performance from the last line in cahoots with dynamic half-back Matt Duggan. Green was rewarded with two tries, the second in the sixteenth minute of the second stanza, a gem as Duggan offloaded right and wide finding the full-back racing into a yawning gap and skirting the defence to score for Wattles to secure an 18–6 lead. The home side ran up a 12–0 advantage by the 26-minute mark courtesy of Green’s initial try in the first stanza and another by hard working back-rower Tyson Stevens. The Eagles’ player/coach Jarrod Lee touched down minutes prior to the break to put his side on the scoreboard trailing 12–6 at half time. The game erupted on a couple of occasions in the latter stages with tempers flaring resulting in fiery Eagles’ forward Darcy Maroske being sent-off eight minutes from full time, after a previous sin bin spell. Wattles now stands at the top of the A Grade premiership ladder with the Gatton Hawks. Wattles captain/coach Travis Burns was thrilled with what he rated as his side’s best effort this season. He was impressed across the park but rated back-rower Brendon McBryde and centre Nick Van Der Poel exceptional given their recent return from lengthy injury spells. With three fixtures remaining against Southern Suburbs, Goondiwindi and Warwick in the run to the finals series, Burns is focused on three successes if the Warriors are to secure a first-grade minor premiership. Wattles 25 (Jackson Green 2, Tyson Stevens, Kai WilliamsonDuggan tries; Matt Duggan 4 goals & field goal) defeated Highfields 6. RESERVE GRADE The Tony Morris Tiling Warriors rolled the mid-season championship reserve grade President’s Cup title holders Highfields to snatch top spot on the Clive Berghofer Land Sales premiership ladder after a convincing 30–12 victory. The Warriors dominated the first half to lead 20–6 at the break, before centre Lachlan Henry touched down to seal the result in the final minute. Wattles 30 (Mitchell Duff, Warren Draper, Joe Morris, Tom Morris, Lachlan Henry tries; Tom Morris 5 goals) defeated Highfields 12. UNDER 19 Highfields was too strong across the paddock for the Warriors Under 19 colts on the end of a 50–6 loss. Front-rower John Lazzaroni crossed for Wattles’ sole try, converted by half-back Matthew Wilson. - Glyn Rees
