New owners for Wheatsheaf Hotel
After being shut for a few years, the doors at the Wheatsheaf Hotel at East Greenmount should be swinging open soon under the new ownership of Edwin and Madeline Cooke.
The previous licensee, Greg Smith, closed the hotel around the middle of 2018 and has been living a quieter life in the premises since that time. The new owner of the building, Edwin Cooke, who is Toowoomba-based and has been involved in the local area for 20 years, said he and his wife have had their eyes on the property for a couple of years. Buying a hotel is a new venture for the Cookes, who are involved with various businesses, including cattle grazing in Central Queensland. The Wheatsheaf was sold on March 24 for $450,000, with the settlement finalising last Tuesday. The hotel itself an historic two-storey timber building with a bar, dining room, kitchen, office and store on the ground floor and five bedrooms, owners/managers residence, a lounge/tea making room and front verandah upstairs. Outside, there is a separate drive-in bottle shop and beer

garden, as well as a bit of land, as the property is just over a hectare, or three acres, in size. The building itself is believed to be about 105 years old. The site has been occupied by an hotel since the 1880s. The first building burnt down and the current hotel was moved from Greenmount in 1935. Continued on page 8

Parents and special guests were invited to the stage to pin on the student’s badges. Families then had the opportunity to have a photo taken with their child wearing their new badge. After the ceremony, the Year 6 students had a class photo taken, and all invited guests remained behind to share in a special morning tea.

Council preparing residential development assistance measures
Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) planning officers are working to collate a report containing extensive residential development assistance measures to assist the release of more housing to the market. TRC Planning and Development Committee chair Cr Megan O’Hara Sullivan said the report, including financial and community impacts, outlining potential assistance measures would be considered at the Planning and Development Committee meeting on June 14. “Senior TRC planning officers have consulted with their state government counterparts and other development industry people to devise a range of measures and other policies that will be presented to the June meeting,” Cr O’Hara Sullivan said. “Council is investigating additional measures to assist the release of new housing sites, as well as incentives to generate greater numbers of rental housing in the existing urban areas, to the property market. “These initiatives will look at stormwater solutions to multiple dwellings or units and financial incentives to progress work on existing approved developments. “In addition, the report will recommend processes that streamline applications in new or greenfield areas, particularly to aid development in Emerging Community Zoned land, plus a review of some development approval fees. “These initiatives will assist in the provision of more TARYN & DEREK BINSTEAD rental accommodation across the Region, as well as making Cert 4 Pet Styling - Certified Dog Behaviour & Training it easier for developers to provide new housing lots for owner occupiers in the short term, (especially given the Professional Pet Stylists demand for new owner occupier homes that has been driven for all Breeds of Dogs by federal stimulus incentives). & Cats Full grooming “We acknowledge that housing supply and housing rental services available by stress are key issues being experienced in our community, appointments that have been compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic and www.creativek9s.net other economic changes. 102 Yandilla St “These challenges are not unique to the Toowoomba Region Salon 0437 924 897 Pittsworth and reflect challenges being experienced across Australia.”

TRC Community Grants
A number of local organisations will benefit from the latest round of Toowoomba Regional Council’s (TRC) Community Grant program. Nobby Heritage & Development Association will receive $1,500 to host community music clubs from all over Darling Downs and South East Queensland at a “safe and happy event”. Cambooya Public Hall Association will receive $2,000 for the first stage of its 2022 hall upgrade, replacing lights in the hall and installing and hardwiring a new public address system. The application was considered a ‘medium’ priority for funding due to the community benefit and alignment with TRC’s ‘Program Priorities’ of “Upgrading facilities to meet standards, regulations and community expectations.” The Hall will contribute $690.80 towards the total cost. The RM Equestrian Centre at Hodgson Vale was unsuccessful in its application for $27,266.18 to build a storage shed for equipment, jumps, tractor, slasher and event equipment. The application was unsuccessful due to the competitive nature of this funding round. The club has been encouraged to apply after 12 months’ operation and to apply for a grant from the State Gambling Community Benefit Fund.
Progress on Queens Park Masterplan
Toowoomba residents and visitors will soon have even better facilities to enjoy at Queens Park thanks to further upgrades by Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC). Stage 7 of TRC’s $12 million Queens Park Masterplan Implementation Project is underway with upgrades to the Vera Lacaze Park now taking shape. Parks and Recreation Services Portfolio Leader Cr Tim McMahon said the works would improve the already great facilities on offer to park users. “The Vera Lacaze Park upgrade project is Council’s final step in the Queens Park Masterplan Implementation Project and I’m pleased to see it underway.” The works, which began in April 2022, are expected to be completed in July 2022, weather pending.

Do you recall Cambooya Junior Performance Festival?
There is a small amount of money left in the Junior Performance Festival bank account and we would like to get some advice as to how the community would like to see these funds used. The Junior Performance Festival was held in the Cambooya Public Hall every second year from 2001 through to 2013. It was a festival of the arts for primary and high school students. The late Mrs Carmel Randle - a well known local Australian bush poet, and a band of local community folk ran the festival. Young people who resided in the Greenmount Service Centre Area were invited to participate in the Divisions of Speech, Vocal and Choral, Instrumental Music, Piano and Keyboard and Dance. Each division was overseen by Artform Professionals including Sandra Neale, Mary Taylor, the late Harley Mead, Kym Troy, Allison Vallette, Tonya Paroz to name a few. A number of the Junior Performance Festival Committee including two of the current account signatories have moved away from the local area, so we need to decide what to do with
the funds. If you have any ideas on how the remaining Festival money could be used, please put them in writing and drop your note to the Cambooya Post Office labelled ‘Cambooya Junior Performance Festival, email Glenda at micnglen2@ bigpond.com or Jean at jsava10@icloud.com or ring Glenda at 0429 646 853 and leave a message or Jean at 0498 999 986. If all ideas can be gathered by the end of May a decision on how the funds will be used will be made early in June. Winter Shelter Toowoomba, a charity offering accommodation and support services to the city’s homeless people, is the beneficiary of the 28th Toowoomba Mayoral Prayer Breakfast, which will be held at Rumours International on Tuesday, May 24, 2022. Toowoomba Region Mayor Paul Antonio said he was pleased to see the charity breakfast return after COVID-19 restrictions forced the event to be cancelled in 2020 and 2021. “Winter Shelter Toowoomba is backed by Lifeline Darling Downs and South West Queensland in conjunction with seven church organisations and support services to house up to 10 homeless people a night over winter,” Mayor Antonio said. “Our Region is fortunate to have numerous support services that assist people who are experiencing difficulties in different aspects of their lives. “I look forward to hearing about how they deliver their services and how other residents might be able to offer assistance in some way. “The Toowoomba Mayoral Prayer Breakfast has the distinction of being one of the few events of its kind in From left: TAFE Queensland’s Jenni Butler, Rev. Mr Cooke said he has received a lot of interest and support from the East Greenmount community. “I’ve already got a couple of locals talking to me with chef experience, barista experience,” he said. The extent of renovations that will be needed is still being assessed, including when it comes to the accommodation. Mr Cooke said he is roughly expecting to be able to be open for accommodation in September, however with the lack of tradespeople and materials available lately this could be pushed back further to October or beyond. He has met with a builder to discuss designs to reinvigorate the hotel. Selling agent Brian Taaffe from Harcourts Toowoomba said it was great for the local community that the Wheatsheaf Hotel was bought by new owners who are keen to be up and running soon. Greg Smith had been in the Wheatsheaf Hotel for about fourteen years, first in partnership with his brother and then with his sister before taking it on solo.

Polocrosse carnival attracts strong support
Clifton Polocrosse Club’s carnival over the long weekend was well supported with participants travelling from a wide area of Queensland and New South Wales. The fact that the Barastoc Interstate Series and Shell Cup carnival is being staged in Warwick across May 6, 7 and 8 helped considerably with players being able to give themselves and their horses a run at Clifton just a week out from the major event. Prominent among the teams competing was the highly skilled Albury-Holbrook combination from southern New South Wales. Players at the Clifton carnival included five members of the Australian team. The two-day event at Clifton covered a wide range of skills with competition ranging from junior games through to A Grade. The weekend began in convivial fashion with a barbecue on Friday night which set the scene for some good sportsmanship across the carnival.

WYREEMA STATE SCHOOL
On Friday 22nd April, Wyreema State School commemorated ANZAC day with a service conducted by the School Leaders. Students created commemorative wreaths that were laid at the foot of the flag poles. Parents and the wider community participated in the service alongside the students and staff. As a school community, we paused to reflect and remember those that have fought for our country.
Students lay a wreath as part of the ceremony.
