Councillor would move if elected
Cr Megan O’Hara Sullivan, who has been selected as the Labor candidate for the seat of North Toowoomba at the upcoming State Election, has indicated that she will move to that electorate if she is successful in becoming a Member of Parliament. Cr O’Hara Sullivan (right) and her husband Dean currently live at Greenmount on a beautiful hillside location overlooking nearby farmland. The couple are in the historic “Loganholme”, which was erected at Clifton in 1896 and moved to Greenmount in October 2007.

Cr O’Hara Sullivan is excited about her selection as a candidate for the election on Saturday 31st October. She has confirmed that she will remain a Toowoomba Regional Councillor until the outcome of the election is known. If Cr O’Hara Sullivan becomes the Member for Toowoomba North, her place on the Regional Council would likely be taken by Toowoomba businesswoman Joy Mingay, who was the 11th choice of voters at the council poll. “I will be able to fulfill by Councillor duties - I won’t be taking time off to campaign,” Cr O’Hara Sullivan said.

CONCERT BAND – FIRST FULL PRACTICE SESSION Last Wednesday was a special day at Cambooya State School as students held their first full concert band practice. The before school practice required students to show up early and Mrs Callaghan took them through their paces. It has been a significant achievement for the school as the process of having instrumental music and a concert band at Cambooya has been a long time in the making. NATIONAL TREE DAY On Thursday students and staff commemorated National Tree Day by planting a broad leaf bottle tree (Brachychiton Australis - pictured below) on the oval near the front of the school. The tree was supplied by Landcare and parent Mrs Ros Vandenberg and has been nurtured by Mr Parton for the past couple of years. Thanks to all involved for making this a special occasion.

Clifton Races fate to be decided
A decision on whether or not the Clifton Races will go ahead this year will be made on September 2, even though the meeting has been announced as part of the 2020 Country Cups Challenge. Clifton Jockey Club is wary of the current crowd restrictions and organisers are fearing a second wave in Queensland could make things extremely difficult. The Clifton meeting, alongside 15 other regional race

With COVID-19 disrupting this year’s Battle of the Bush series, Racing Minister Stirling Hinchliffe welcomed the creation of the Country Stampede and the opportunity for regional Queensland’s best sprinters to win their way through to the Summer Carnival, alongside their middle distance counterparts.

VIOLET BRODIE PARK Hi TRC Staff and Crs O’Shea and McMahon, I am writing to you concerning Violet Brodie Park at the top of Haldon Street, Greenmount. I first inquired about this park nearly three years ago after exploring the town as a new resident and seeing the signage. The response I got from locally based council staff and others in the community was a hesitant, ‘we don’t really know sorry’. At the time I remember it a bit odd how hesitant the answers I got were. However, I didn’t think much more of it and thought that it must be State Government administered. I have now confirmed that it is not a State Government administered park and it is in fact under council’s oversight. It also appears since first inquiring, further DIY fencing/ barriers have been set up sectioning off portions of the park aligning with corresponding residential properties backing onto the park between the tops of Haldon and Ramsay Streets. This seems to be for private use of these residents’ horses. As the region administrators and Chair and Portfolio Leader of the Environment and Community Committee respectively, can you please provide some answers to my questions below and assist in this matter of community access concerning the park? Is this meant to be an equine park and if so how does everyone else in community (say other equine users or mountain bikers) get access to use this park and my questions? If it is an equine park can fencing and access be improved for everyone? If it is not meant to be an equine park, can something be done to ensure open and easy access to this beautiful bushland park? Finally if it is not meant to be an equine park could council please look at establishing a walking trail through there for residents (perhaps connecting to Haldon and Ramsay Streets at either end)? Thank you TRC Staff and Councillors for your time and attention to this matter and our community. Rural Aid this week released both its latest annual (2019/20) and most recent quarterly Snapshot figures outlining the charity’s assistance provided to farmers and their rural communities CEO, John Warlters said delivering, on the ground, for farmers and rural communities is more important than ever. “While Rural Aid is well renowned for delivering hay through our Buy a Bale campaign, we’ve also continued to deliver drinking water, financial and counselling assistance to rural and regional communities affected by drought, bushfire, flood and those impacted by Covid-19. “We could not support our farmers and rural communities without the generosity of everyday Aussies and our corporate sponsors,” Mr Warlters said.

WYREEMA STATE SCHOOL
The Year 4/5’s have been busy bees since day one of Term 3. We have been enjoying learning about ‘harvesting good health’ in Design and Technologies. To do this, we have planted carrots, beans and broccoli and will continue to watch them grow over the next two Terms. When our chosen plant has grown, we will need to consider a recipe in which they would be most suitable. Our English Unit focus this Term is analysing poems. We have been practicing our TEEL paragraph writing to ensure that we write an excellent analysis. We have been engaged in time and fractions during Maths lessons. The difference between 12 and 24-hour times has been very interesting for the Year 5 students.
