New school unveiled
Westbrook families will finally have a school within walking distance following an announcement by the Diocese of Toowoomba that it will be building St Francis Catholic College, a K-12 school. The school will be built on the corner of Boundary Street South and Shoesmith Road, to the north-east of the township. Toowoomba Catholic Schools (TCS), which runs schools for the Catholic Diocese of Toowoomba stretching from Toowoomba to Stanthorpe and west to Quilpie, is well into the planning stage of the project. TCS said Westbrook was chosen as the location for a new school because it is a growing community that is family focussed, also recognising the lack of existing schools in the area. “Being located on such a large parcel of land, with expansive
views and easy pedestrian and vehicle access, the ability to deliver a College that will provide what parents want for their children and a place that will engage young people in learning through both natural and built environments is possible.” It is named after St Francis of Assisi, the patron Saint of ecology, with the aim of encouraging staff and students to embrace their surroundings and learn within them. Up until now and until St Francis Catholic College is built, the nearest Catholic primary school to Westbrook, Wyreema and Cambooya has been St Anthony’s Primary School in Harristown, with high school students having to travel further to schools close to the centre of Toowoomba. Community consultation and feedback as a part of Toowoomba Catholic Schools’ Ministerial Infrastructure Designation (MID) application will begin later this month. TCS said an MID provides a planning approval pathway to a development approval under the Planning Act 2006. MIDs are assessed by the State Government and decided by the Planning Minister. The MID approves a development envelope over the land, similar to a The design of the school plans to take advantage of the close to ten hectares of land on masterplan. which the school premises will be located.

Infrastructure Services Committee chair and Local Recovery Group chair Cr Carol Taylor said Shepperd Road at Wyreema was one of many roads damaged during this event with Council now undertaking temporary repairs to the drainage culverts along this road. Council’s intention is to re-open the road to two-way traffic as soon as possible however this is dependent on Council procuring suitable culverts to repair the recent damage. It is currently anticipated the road should be re-opened to two-way traffic in about two weeks subject to weather conditions during that time.

Minister bows to land valuation pressure
After attracting criticism for failing to act over new land valuations across 30 local government areas, including those hit by disastrous flooding, the Minister for Resources has made a concession. “This is another example of a Government that is too slow Calls for action included a request for new valuations to be to act and only cares about how things look in the media rather issued for flood-hit land. than how they really are. Among those critical of the Government was Member for “The initial decisions made by Minister Scott Stewart on Condamine, Pat Weir. Mr Weir pointed out that the increases in land valuations this issue was heartless and callous. will undoubtedly mean higher land tax, at a time many “The onus to act should never have been put on flood Queenslanders are suffering from the effects of the floods and victims. COVID-19. “Queenslanders deserve so much better,” Mr Weir said. He called on Resources Minister Scott Stewart to outline the hardship provisions for flood-affected property owners and businesses who continue to suffer from the effects of the COVID pandemic. “The Minister must also immediately grant an extension for the period of objection to property valuations,” Mr Weir said. “I am calling on the Minister to show compassion for these individuals and businesses suffering extreme hardship due to conditions beyond their control.” Now, Mr Stewart has reacted. The Minister said he had spoken to the Independent Valuer General who will consider appeals beyond the standard 60-day period and that he will take an empathetic approach when considering appeals lodged by affected residents beyond that period. “The impacts of historical flooding are considered in every land valuation,” Mr Stewart said. “The recent valuations were done prior to February’s floods.” Mr Weir has now criticised the time taken to respond. “Once again, the Palaszczuk Labor Government has been dragged kicking and screaming to make a decision,” Mr Weir said. “It is extraordinary that it once again took media coverage and pressure from the Opposition fighting for flood-affected landowners before the Queensland Labor Government finally acted. “This third-term govern-ment has clearly lost its way and is no longer working in the best interests of Queenslanders.

He explained how harnessing data would help enable primary producers to make more sense of what they do and often enable them to find better ways to do it. One of the products that garnered the attention of those in attendance was a remote walk over weighing system for cattle. These units are based on cattle crossing scales as they enter a fenced area to seek water, with the weight able to be monitored remotely from the farm office or homestead. Sarah Halleen, an animal production specialist gave cattle and sheep producers a rundown on the use of feed supplements, emphasising the importance of nutrition for stock. Hugh Reardon-Smith from Nutrien Ag Solutions at Pittsworth addressed current issues as a result of recent climatic conditions and the world scene. Mr Reardon-Smith said sunflower prices could be expected to increase massively because crops in Ukraine are decimated. He also pointed out how important soil testing would be with the soaring price of fertiliser at present. The afternoon included Nutrien finance team member Alex Morison who outlined options for funding which supplemented bank finance and Nutrien’s National Animal Health Training Manager David Homer, who discussed drenches and vaccines.

New road cameras catching many
Since 1 November, close to 40,000 people have been caught by the new mobile phone and seatbelt cameras operating around Queensland. In the two weeks from 25 January to 7 February alone, nearly 500 people were caught each day. As of late March, 604 drivers in the Southern Police Region had been caught using mobile phones and 167 drivers and 42 passengers had been caught not wearing seatbelts. Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said drivers had plenty of time to become accustomed to the new cameras, as they had a three-month warning period. “We’re cracking down on phone fiends and those not wearing seatbelts – with new anywhere anytime high-tech cameras and heavy fines,” Mr Bailey said. “We know using a phone while driving is the equivalent of getting behind the wheel with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.07 – 0.10 - it’s just not on. “What we’ve seen once again is an over-representation of regional Queensland in our state-wide statistics so I’m urging drivers, put down the phone, and clip up the seatbelt, or you will be caught.” Drivers face $1033 fines when caught on the phone behind the wheel and $391 fines for not wearing seatbelts.

Boost for state school internet speeds
The Queensland Government will invest $190 million to make internet speeds for state schools 200 times faster. The partnership with Telstra will also include $110 million spent on exchange upgrades, benefitting communities and businesses in hundreds of regional and remote areas. Work is already underway, with upgrades rolling out from the start of next term and hundreds of schools set to benefit in the coming months. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said this investment will mean internet speeds across all 1258 state schools will be 200 times faster as well as faster speeds for their communities. “This will ensure teachers and students have access to the latest digital technologies and tools for their classrooms: everything they need for a world-class education,” she said. Education Minister Grace Grace said the first phase of the contract would increase average internet speeds 40 times to all schools by the end of next year, and 200 times in 2026. “Around 40 schools will be connected to fibre optic for the first time, and our more isolated communities will not be left behind. “Newer technologies like Next Generation Satellites will be used to deliver faster internet where terrestrial options are less practical,” Ms Grace said.

WYREEMA STATE SCHOOL
Congratulations to all our amazing athletes who competed in our Inter House Cross Country day on Friday the 18th of March. I am very proud of the sheer determination, competitiveness and the sportsmanship displayed by our students. Congratulations to Steele who narrowly defeated Rudd 192 points to 182. A big thank you to Mr Fritz for having our ovals looking so beautiful. Thank you to our Wyreema staff for the commitment and dedication to training our students and ensuring the day ran so smoothly.
Heritage Weekend is on
Allora Heritage weekend will be going ahead next month, with the date the only thing changing. Due to COVID restrictions it was decided to postpone the Heritage Weekend from January to Saturday and Sunday 14th and 15th May, but it hasn’t deterred exhibitors. Two full days are planned with displays of vintage and veteran cars and trucks, tractors, antiques, motorcycles and a huge collection of historical machinery. Admission is just $10 per adult and children are free. For further information phone Graeme on 0428 717 623.
