$8.1 million for Toowoomba to Warwick pipeline

The Queensland Government has allocated $8.1 million to preparatory works for the Toowoomba to Warwick pipeline, including detailed design, surveying and geotechnical works.

If the pipeline goes ahead, there are plans for the townships of Cambooya, Greenmount and Nobby to be connected to it.

Minister for Water Glenn Butcher said investment in water security is a high priority for the government.

The announcement of the funding came in the wake of last Wednesday’s meeting of the Southern Queensland Inland and New South Wales Border Regional Water Alliance (SQINB-RWA).

The meeting was attended by Minister Butcher as well as Toowoomba Region Mayor Paul Antonio and the mayors of Southern Downs, Western Downs, Goondiwindi and Lockyer Valley regions and Tenterfield Shire.

Mayor Antonio said the Alliance would co-operate with the state government as it advanced its regional water assessment project.

“The Alliance Mayors appreciated the chance to speak with the Minister and are heartened by his willingness to join our future discussion with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development at the earliest opportunity,” Mayor Antonio said.

“Cooperation between the three levels of government will be a key feature of finding solutions and identifying new

water sources.

The Queensland Government has also begun a $3 million Regional Water Assessment for the Southern and Darling Downs.

Darling Downs Health has partnered with Cub Care to pilot an online emergency paediatric consultation program.

Acting Health Service Chief Executive Annette Scott said the program would give carers another option to seek emergency medical advice for children, rather than waiting in our emergency departments.

Future water supply options discussed

The Southern Queensland Inland and New South Wales Border Regional Water Alliance (SQINB-RWA) have committed to advancing negotiations around planning for the area’s long-term water security.

“New variants have been identified that are capable of doubling grain weight,” Dr Tao said.

“These traits are strongly inherited, with genes accounting for as much as 80 per cent of the grain size characteristics.

Toowoomba Municipal Band supports Hospice

Toowoomba Municipal Band is revving up to present a lively concert at the Empire Theatre in support of the Toowoomba Hospice.

The weather is just right at the moment for playing tennis so if you can get a group together come along and enjoy the facilities. Members are charged $4 an hour and for nonmembers it is $8 an hour. There is an extra $2 an hour charge for the lights if they are used. The key to the courts is now back at the Spar shop. There is only one key for the courts themselves, the toilet key has been removed and hirers and patrons are asked to use the toilets at the Lions Park, as they are cleaned and serviced regularly at the moment for the Coronavirus. The padlock is to be cleaned at the tennis courts on departure and the key and tag are to be cleaned on return from the tennis courts to the shop. There are disinfection wipes freely available at the Spar for this purpose - ask at the counter.

Conditions could change at short notice if Government Covid rules require this.

Our next general monthly meeting will be held tonight, Thursday the 7th of October at 7pm.

The Christmas function this year will be held on Friday the 26th of November 2021.

Mulberry Project partner in work scheme

The Mulberry Project, which had its beginnings on a plot of land at Nobby, will be a partner in a State Governmentsponsored scheme through which migrants, refugees and international students will be supported to find work in South West Queensland’s agricultural sector.

The Minister for Training and Skills Development Di Farmer said Growcom Australia will be working with the Mulberry Project to deliver training, work experience, and placements for 80 participants.

She said the Government’s Diverse Queensland Workforce program and the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries are jointly funding this program to support producers who need skilled workers, and people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds who can grow into careers in the industry if given a start.
