Allora Pony Club’s Working Horse Draft and Gymkhana saw Cambooya Pony Club win the March Past and secure the trophy for the club gaining Highest Points. Hosted at the Allora Showgrounds, the Working Horse Draft was on the Saturday and Gymkhana on the Sunday. Saturday saw over 160 draft runs for the day and Sunday saw 82 riders compete in the gymkhana. There were riders from 21 Pony Clubs compete over the weekend, with riders travelling from Mt Mee, Blackbutt, Kumbia, Dalby, Fassifern, Laidley, Goondiwindi and in between.Allora Pony Club thanked the competitors that came and supported the event and helped where they could, as the event ran solely with the help of volunteers. Whilst at a general level, averages across most sales have been higher, demonstrating medium term confidence in the industry for producers to invest in genetics and improve the performance of their herds.

“The correlative relationship between producers purchasing more bulls during this selling season and the lower FSRs demonstrates producers either intend to or have females available to be joined to increase herd numbers on farm.”
Low female slaughter and positive bull sale results point towards strengthening of the herd rebuild according to Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA).
Over the last twelve months the FSR has averaged 44 per cent nationally which supports MLA’s current cattle projections for a 5.6 per cent rise in national numbers in 2022 due to the high retention of females.
LOOKING AHEAD The trends point towards a strengthening of the herd rebuild as female retention on farm rises in line with increased offerings and clearance rates of bulls purchased by producers to join the retained females. The effects of this retention of females and larger numbers of females joined won’t be fully appreciated or felt until these calf drops reach processor weights from grass or complete their feedlotTheseprograms.results promote confidence in the medium term in both availability of supply and producers’ outlook.

The female slaughter rate (FSR) is a technical lead indicator of whether the national herd is operating in a rebuild or liquidation stage. The FSR tracks the number of female cattle processed compared to the total as a percentage.

Queensland and South Australia are both operating significantly lower than the national average at 35.1 per cent and 34.7 per cent. MLA Senior Market Information Analyst Ripley Atkinson said the state figures highlighted producers’ attitudes. “We’re seeing producers retaining a higher percentage of females on farm which will drive a longer term positive outlook for the strength of the rebuild with larger calf drops for each season moving forwards,” Mr Atkinson said. “Across large parts of the eastern seaboard, on average the 2022 spring bull sale season, clearance rates and numbers of bulls offered and sold have also been high.

One motorist was taken to Toowoomba Hospital after a two vehicle crash on the New England Highway at the intersection with Hodgson Vale Road last Thursday, just before 6pm. Three people were treated at the scene by paramedics, with one motorist extricated from a vehicle by Fire and Rescue crews and taken at 6.30pm by ambulance to hospital, in a stable condition. The highway was blocked to traffic for some time with south-bound motorists diverted along Freyling Road. Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.
Toowoomba Regional Council is inviting the community to have its say on an infrastructure development proposal for the Toowoomba Regional Sports Precinct (TRSP) project.

Council seeks input on Charlton sports precinct
Toowoomba Region Councillor Tim McMahon said the TRSP will provide for a staged delivery over a number of years of a high class, regional sports facility that promotes the social and economic well being of the community. “The project will address the existing shortage of developed sports land for the region and will profoundly influence the future sporting endeavours of Toowoomba and the Darling Downs Region,” Cr McMahon said.“The TRSP will be developed over seven stages and on completion will include twenty sporting fields catering for football(soccer), rugby union, rugby league, Australian rules football, cricket, softball, baseball, shooting and archery.”

IT’S FETE WEEK!
The University of Queensland (UQ) has been engaged in a research project looking into how air quality can impact on concentration and wellbeing of students. It is not something we think about a lot but it can have an impact on our lives. Last week a team from UQ ran a workshop with our Year 5/6 students where they built their own indoor air quality (IAQ) sensors, monitored the air quality in their classrooms and shared with us ways through which we can improve it. It was interesting to see how CO₂ levels rose indoors to quite high levels when windows where closed and then declined when cross ventilation was introduced. Outside the air was crystal clear. This helped the students gain a deeper understanding of the term “Go outside and get some fresh air.”

All of our stall holders are ready to go with their goodies, from hand-made items to a mystery bottle you might select when you pick a card. Want a chance at winning $100 cash, maybe a Harley Davidson Joy Ride or even one of two $500 fuel vouchers? Then, head over to the First Aid/Tickets Sales Tent and buy yourself a number in Choc Plop Lotto or buy a ticket in the Multi-Draw Raffle- it’s that easy! There is something for everyone at the fete. Why not jump in the car on Saturday and head to Vale View State School for a fun-filled day of food, great coffee or drinks for the kids, stalls and entertainment. Where is the place to be on Saturday from 11am to 3pm? Vale View State School!

The Reserve Grade Warriors were the first local side on the victory dais, after coming from behind, trailing 4–12 at halftime to snatch a nail-biter in the final minutes and overhaul hosts, the Hawks, 20–18 after crossing for three tries to one in the secondTheystanza.willmeet the winner of next weekend’s Reserve Grade preliminary final clash between Highfields and Gatton Wattles’ A Graders dominated their Hawks opponents in blustery conditions to build on a 22–16 half time lead on their way to a convincing 38–22 victory. Gifted former Queensland Rangers half-back Matt Duggan emerged from an injury cloud to claim a touchdown hat trick in a superb performance considered his best of the season. In an overall sensational team effort, Duggan was well supported by captain/coach Travis Burns, full-back Jackson Green, centre Nick Van Der Poel and the Warriors pack that neutralised the size abundant Gatton forwards who have dominated the competition across the past season.Wattles can now rest up for the coming fortnight before their first season decider since 2018, while Gatton and the Highfields Eagles battle out next weekend’s preliminary final for the right to challenge the Warriors for the premiership silverware.

A GRADE Wattles 36 (Matt Duggan 3, Kai Williamson-Duggan, Austin Jennings, Matt Christensen, Travis Burns tries; Travis Burns 3, Kai Williamson-Duggan goals) defeated Gatton 22.
With wins over the Gatton Hawks last Sunday, both the A Grade and Reserves Wattles sides will be contesting Toowoomba Rugby League grand finals with an extra week’s rest over their competition. Gatton club officials hosted what was said to be the biggest ever crowd at the Cahill Park facility, which highlighted what can be considered a very high level of country rugby league.
Nice drop of rain again over the weekend, but it has made the oval area very wet again and the entry from the top car park muddy, so please avoid this entry for a few days until it dries out. Our first Friday night function is planned for the 7th of October at 6pm, further details to follow. It is hoped to have a market day at the Sports Club grounds on Saturday the 8th of October. There will be more news about this proposal coming up soon, so keep a look out. If this date doesn’t suit it will hopefully be held later on in the month.
