New highway servo a step closer
It appears that a proposed new service station on the New England Highway at Nobby is getting closer to becoming a reality. An old service station on the site, just north of the highway junction with the Nobby Connection Road, had traded for many years as Steele Rudd Corner Service Station until it was acquired by United Petroleum for a reported $937,000 in April 2019. The facility traded for a while under the United banner, but

was closed within twelve months. The company lodged a development application with Toowoomba Regional Council to enable it to build a new facility on the site. The application was lodged in October 2019 and Council approval was given in July 2020. Plans submitted for the development provide for a large service station including a general fuel forecourt with three banks of pumps as well as a large truck refuelling forecourt, along with a convenience store. United Petroleum has now submitted a further application to the Council seeking permission to erect a series of signs at the site. The application proposes a large pylon along with canopy and wall signs. United proposes to operate the site 24 hours a day.

Toowoomba landfill set for further expansion
Another major project will soon get underway after the Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) accepted a project tender to expand the Toowoomba landfill site to meet future growth and waste disposal needs of the region.
at the site has the potential to extend the life of the facility by more than 50 years. “Maximising landfill space by vertical expansion and extension on site to the west is far cheaper than establishing landfilling operations at a new landfill site and offers better environmental safeguards.” Works are expected to begin in the next few weeks and be completed in February 2023.

TRC has recently awarded a tender on a $4.4 million project which will vertically expand an older cell at the Toowoomba Waste Management Centre (TWMC) at Bedford Street in Cranley (pictured above). TRC Water and Waste Committee Portfolio Leader Cr Nancy Sommerfield said the Bedford Street site was a landfill site for large commercial customers and was the primary place that TRC contractors dispose of domestic wheelie bin waste. “The Toowoomba Waste Management Centre is an important site in that almost all kerb-collected wheelie bin waste in and around Toowoomba is disposed at Bedford Street,” she said. “Some years ago, TRC identified vertical expansion above existing and completed landfill cells as the most costeffective and efficient method to meet our more immediate waste disposal needs and for compliance with environmental requirements. “The overall Vertical Expansion Project is being completed in six stages over 20 years. “This is the second stage of the expansion plan of the Bedford Street site. “Expansion to the west of the existing landfilling operation

Lantana (pictured above) is a highly invasive weed with environmental and agricultural impacts. It is recognised as a risk to cattle, causing hypersensitivity to sunlight, blistering, especially around the mouth, and liver damage in animals that ingest it in significant quantities. While it can provide useful habitat for small birds where little else is available, lantana also out-competes native vegetation species and degrades productive pasture. Currently, with recent rains across the eastern Downs, lantana is highly visible with fresh new growth and clusters of attractive pink and yellow flowers. These flowers quickly turn to small fleshy fruits that are attractive to birds. As they move around the landscape, birds are the main vectors for weed spread, with seedlings most likely to be found at the base of fenceposts and around trees and shrubs in which birds perch. Young plants can be easily pulled by hand (with gloves). Even larger bushes have shallow roots and are quite easy to lift. If your property has a major infestation, you may need to use mechanical or chemical methods to get on top of it. Up to date advice on controlling Lantana is available from the Queensland Weed Society’s Weeds of Southern Queensland 4th Edition: wsq.org.au/downloads/weeds-of-southern-queensland4th-edition-order-form/ Alternatively, you can contact Cambooya Landcare for a copy of this publication at cambooyalandcare@gmail.com

Cambooya State School LOOKING INTO SPACE In a year that has so far seen very little sunshine and clear skies, the Year 5 students from Cambooya were extremely lucky on their recent night time visit to Mt Kent observatory. The local scientists at the observatory believe they had one of the best night skies for star gazing this year. Students were able to stand inside one of the domes and view a state-of-the-art telescope, which is part of Queensland’s only astronomical research facility. They were also able to observe a telescope which is controlled by astronomers on the other side of the world. Several students were also able to control a telescope from a computer and then view what the telescope could see. Did you know there is a galaxy named the Sombrero Galaxy? The Year 5s could see this galaxy through the telescope and it looks just like the Mexican hat that it is named after. Thank you to the staff of the University of Southern Queensland for hosting the students from Cambooya State School for this amazing evening.

Have your say on feral deer strategy
Queenslanders are being encouraged to have their say on a new strategy for dealing with the impacts of feral deer. Feral deer have been spotted in recent years on the northern side of Westbrook. Fallow deer, a restricted invasive animal species native to Iran and Iraq, were released at Westbrook between 1870 and 1872, although according to a Department of Natural Resources and Mines report from 2005 this population died out when the land was cleared for agriculture. Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries and Minister for Rural Communities Mark Furner said feral deer numbers were growing and posing an increasing threat to biodiversity, agriculture and public safety. “Under the new strategy we aim to make feral deer management more effective through partnerships and planning,” Mr Furner said. “Because they’re so mobile, deer graze across large areas feral deer,” he said. and control efforts are most effective when conducted “We know that different stakeholders have different cooperatively with other land managers and local groups. viewpoints, so we’re seeking as much feedback as possible “It’s also very important to prevent any releases or escapes through public consultation to further refine the strategy.” by domesticated deer, or relocation of feral deer.” Feral deer are restricted invasive animals under the Mr Furner said the draft strategy sets out the goals and Biosecurity Act 2014. objectives for stakeholders to help them better understand Part of the strategy review is to update it to reflect the their responsibilities. current legislation. “It also provides guidance for local government biosecurity Consultation is open until 30 June 2022 at daf.engagementhub. planning and encourages a coordinated approach to managing com.au
Greenmount rollover
A female teenager was taken to hospital last Wednesday after rolling a vehicle on Greenmount Etonvale Road. The female, aged in her late teens, rolled the vehicle at around 6.30pm near the junction with McNallys Road. No other vehicles were involved. Police, paramedics, a tow truck and three Queensland Fire and Emergency Services attended the incident. Paramedics treated her at the scene and transported her to Toowoomba Hospital in a stable condition with minor injuries and spinal precautions.
Solar rebate boost
Households and small business solar panel owners can expect a 41 per cent increase in the feed-in tariff. Minister for Energy, Renewables and Hydrogen Mick de Brenni said the increase will save about 150,000 Regional Queenslanders up to $200 a year. The increase comes after a recent government announcement of a $175 cost of living rebate on everyone’s next power bill .
