It will still be a requirement to use the app at businesses where visitors need to be fully vaccinated, such as restaurants, cafes and nursing homes, to ensure compliance with rules regarding vaccination, Among the type of venues where checking in will no longer be required, Health Minister Yvette D’Ath included hairdressing, beauty therapy, gyms, many indoor play centres, real estate and auction houses and indoor sports centres. “All of those areas will no longer need and any part of government buildings or services where the public ordinarily have access, will not need to check in now,’’ she said.

CBD parking upgrade Properties robbed in Ramsay, Greenmount
Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) has awarded Duncan Solutions Australia a contract to supply a Smart Parking Integrated Infrastructure solution to support Council’s implementation of the Toowoomba City Centre Car Parking Strategy. Infrastructure Committee portfolio leader Cr Melissa Taylor said the introduction of the new technology would not only mean parking in the CBD would be easier than ever, but would also be a catalyst for other project innovations across the Region. “We’re excited to bring this Smart Cities technology to the Toowoomba Region and plan to commence active engagement with residents and business communities from late February 2022,” she said. “By simply downloading a phone application, residents and visitors will be able to easily find available car parks and have more payment options, including contactless payment. For customers who choose not to download the app, our existing payment methods will still be available. “Another key function of the new technology will be for app users to receive notifications before parking time limits are reached to avoid infringements, with free parking introduced for the first 30 minutes in CBD on-street one and two hour car parking spaces. Cr Taylor said ultimately, it is intended that motorists will be able to take advantage of real-time digital parking signs identifying available parking spaces.
Lot reconfiguration approved at Top Camp
An application to Toowoomba Regional Council to reconfigure one lot at 66 Geddes Road at Top Camp into three lots has been approved. The application, submitted on 22 October 2021, was approved last Wednesday, 2 February. The land, totalling four hectares, is located on the western side of Geddes Road, between Echidna Crescent and Claudia Court. There is a house located on the land.
Residents in rural areas previously thought safe from thieves should think again following two robberies last week at Ramsay and East Greenmount. A property on Sawpit Road at Ramsay was broken into on Wednesday morning and a property on Bell Road at East Greenmount on Thursday morning. A neighbour said the Ramsay property had crystal and jewellery stolen from it and the East Greenmount property laptops and car keys amongst other things. The neighbour said in the East Greenmount incident, they believe the perpetrator had entered the premises by busting the door jamb. A dark-coloured sedan was seen in the vicinity. Both crimes were reported to police. It is unknown if there is any connection between the two incidents. In the Cambooya Police Division, covering Cambooya, Greenmount, East Greenmount and Ramsay, there have been 15 incidents of unlawful entry reported in the last year, with ten occurring in the Cambooya township. Over the same time period, there have been ten incidents in Hodgson Vale and Top Camp combined.

Jo Sheppard new QFF CEO Drought-tackling tools
With a depth of experience across multiple industry sectors, Jo Sheppard has been appointed as the new CEO of Queensland Farmers’ Federation (QFF).
Ms Sheppard (above) most recently served as Director of Stakeholder Engagement at the University of Southern Queensland. Previous roles include CEO of the Toowoomba Chamber of Commerce, Director on the board of Sunwater, and previously an elected Councillor and Mayor of Paroo Shire Council which covers Cunnamulla. Ms Sheppard said advocating on behalf of Queensland’s farmers is a significant responsibility and, given the importance of the agriculture sector to the state’s economy and regional communities, effective representation is critical. “Despite facing ongoing challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic, rising input prices, biosecurity incursions and climate change, Queensland farmers continue to produce world-class food, fibre and foliage. “I look forward to supporting and striving for a better deal for Queensland’s farmers to strengthen their productivity and profitability into the future,” Ms Sheppard said. She will commence next Monday, 14 February.

The Drought Resilience Self-Assessment Tool (DR.SAT) and the updated Climate Services for Agriculture (CSA) platform provide farmers with the best available climate data to help prepare for future drought and climate change. They are a $32 million investment under the Federal Government’s $5 billion Future Drought Fund. Minister for Agriculture and Northern Australia David Littleproud said the Drought Resilience Self-Assessment Tool (DR.SAT) and updated Climate Services for Agriculture (CSA) platform are two key investments for drought prevention. “These tools are about using technology to make climate information more accessible and useful for farmers, industry, and rural and regional communities,” Mr Littleproud said. “My department has worked with farmers here in Maranoa to ensure the prototypes provided information which was accessible and useful. “We will continue to work with farmers and agribusiness to develop tools that are practical and will make a real difference to rural and regional Australia.” The CSA platform provides farmers with historical climate data, seasonal forecasts, and future climate projections at a 5km2 resolution across the country. “Climate information for cattle, wheat, sheep, almonds, apples, barley, canola, and lupins is now available,” Mr Littleproud said. “An apple farmer in Stanthorpe can see if the risk of sun damage to their crop is expected to change in future - this means that farmers can easily assess how the climate variables that matter to their business could change in future. The DR.SAT is a free tool to help farmers prepare for future drought. “Farmers can explore the current and past condition of their property through satellite imagery and complete simple surveys to assess how they are tracking in terms of financial performance and personal wellbeing,” the Minister said. “The tool also helps farmers understand how their land might be impacted by climate into the future, and then see a tailored set of practical options and resources to manage these impacts.” See the DRSAT tool at www.drsat.com.au and the CSA tool at www.climate servicesforag.indraweb.io

Fritz, Miss Lavelle’s pup came to school. We had fun watching him trying to get the teacher’s food from their bags. I got to talk to my teachers. Minecraft construction was great fun. I [am] enjoying riding my bike all around the school. I don’t need trainer wheels any more.” Evelyn “I am a new prep. Making new friends with my teachers was fun. Having morning tea and lunch in the staff room was cool. We sat upon the lounge while the teachers were doing their boring teacher business. Us kids did lots of fun business. Shape Up was one board game I liked a lot. I’m looking forward to when the kids all can come next week.”

The penultimate round of the 2021/22 season saw competition leaders Kulpi play at Millmerran and Bowenville host a winless Pittsworth side. Millmerran’s were all-out for 58 runs from 28.1 overs, with Tyson Klingberg bowling 5/16 (8). With 59 needed for the win, a finals berth was all but booked for Kulpi who have been nothing short of exceptional this season. They managed it in 18 overs. In the other match, Pittsworth batted first and were 9/186 (40), which proved to be too high of a total for Bowenville to chase down, finishing all out for 160 after 39.1 overs.

Lifeline crisis text service now 24/7
Lifeline Australia’s text and chat services have been expanded to 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week. The expansion was made possible by a $1.5 million grant from the Federal Government. In a 2019 evaluation of the original service by the Australian Health Services Research Institute, 42 percent of contacts said they would not have used another service if the text or chat were not available. Of 1000 help seekers who were asked to provide demographic information, the median age of people using the service is 24 years old, while 80 per cent of help seekers identified as female. Lifeline CEO Colin Seery said that rather than diverting phone calls from the 13 11 14 service, the always-on digital platform has in fact increased the range and total number of people contacting the organisation. “This is a landmark in suicide prevention in Australia and is all about bringing help to people who are in situations and environments where accessing support through digital communication is the only safe or viable option. “The service is unique in that it allows for genuine privacy during contact, so it is well suited to support cohorts at heightened vulnerability such as help seekers experiencing domestic and family violence or those living with a disability,” Mr Seery said. You can phone Lifeline to speak to a Crisis Supporter on 13 11 14, text 0477 131 114 or chat to Lifeline online at lifeline. org.au

$2.6 million rehabilitation for Greenmount-Eton Vale Road
The 5.6 kilometre stretch of Greenmount-Eton Vale road between the New England Highway and Greenmount Connection Road is set to receive $2.6 million in works, starting late February. Greenmount–Eton Vale Road is the stretch of road on the journey to Toowoomba between the New England Highway and Greenmount Connection Road. It is fair to say the road is in poor condition, with extensive rutting and shape loss. In many parts of the road, the lines on both the outer and inner part of the carriageway are very faded and difficult to see at any time of the day. Some parts of the road are also quite susceptible to waterlogging, further deteriorating its condition. The road was closed briefly late last year following heavy, sustained rain, making it dangerous to traverse. Infrastructure Services Committee chair Cr Carol Taylor said the road carried high volumes of traffic daily and was an important link between Greenmount and Toowoomba. “The Greenmount–Eton Vale Road Rehabilitation project will be delivered by Council with the works expected to be completed by mid-2022,” Cr Taylor said. The intersection of Greenmount-Eton Vale Road with the “The project will greatly improve road safety for all New England Highway. motorists. “It will involve reconstructing the pavement along a Government, $750,000 from the Australian Government 5.6-kilometre section of Greenmount–Eton Vale Road. through its Roads to Recovery Program and the balance from This 5.6km section is close to the entirety of the road. Cr Taylor said when finished, this section of Greenmount– “Council would be unable to deliver the volume of road Eton Vale Road will have a stronger and more durable road works required across the Region without the financial surface. assistance of the Australian and Queensland Governments, “New line markings and signage will also improve overall and we’re very thankful for the funding support,” Cr Taylor safety for road users,” she said. said. The Greenmount–Eton Vale Road Rehabilitation project “Council gives priority to road infrastructure projects that is being jointly funded with $750,000 from the Transport improve safety and access for the broader community in the Infrastructure Development Scheme from the Queensland first instance.”

‘Tribute tree’ incorporated into Hike to Heal
New to the Hike to Heal Scavenger Hike this year is the temporary installation of a Tribute Tree at Mount Peel Bushland Reserve during the hike week long event. The Tribute Tree was designed and constructed by members of the Toowoomba West Men’s Shed. On the tree, you can write a message in loving memory of someone special or words of encouragement for someone struggling with mental ill health. It is a poignant way to express your love. The tree will be located at the trailhead near the car park at the Corner of Westminster and Darling streets, Drayton. Hike participants are invited to dedicate their walk to a loved one lost to suicide or managing mental ill health. They can craft a short, personalised message, a person’s name or just a kind word to the leaf shaped memory tag with the permanent marker provided at the site. Hike organiser Linda Barton said the intention is to help create a climate of hope and healing amongst our community. Hike to Heal runs from Saturday 19 February to Sunday 27 February at Mount Peel Bushland Park or a chosen destination. To purchase tickets for the hike, visit hiketoheal.oneraffle.com/ hiketoheal Members from the Toowoomba West Men’s Shed with the Tribute Tree (above) and the Tribute Tree leaves (below).
