Well-travelled musician coming to Felton Hall

Established British singer-songwriter Emily Maguire (pictured below), who has toured the UK extensively with American legends Don McLean, Dr Hook and Eric Bibb, will be performing at Felton Hall in April. Maguire’s songs have travelled the airwaves far and wide, as they have been used by Greenpeace and Hollywood, playlisted on both national ABC and BBC Radio, and performed in prisons and psychiatric hospitals as well as concert halls and theatres across the UK and Ireland.

She is open about her struggles with bipolar disorder since publishing her first book, ‘Start Over Again’, her experience of mental health recovery and her practice of Buddhist meditation over the past 20 years have strongly influenced her songwriting. Maguire’s songs have been described as “bathed in raw, emotional power,” (in Guitarist magazine) and her live show is a moving and thought-provoking experience not to be missed. The visit to Felton is part of a southern Queensland tour as a duo with her husband Christian Dunham, who is on bass. After 12 years away in the UK, the couple is delighted to be back on the family goat farm in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, where they used to finance their record label Shaktu Records by making goat’s cheese. They are currently working on Emily’s seventh album, due for release later this year.

Roads closed, paddocks flooded

Although the rainfall was not as substantial as the week before, the soaked condition of the ground meant the downpour last Thursday saw creek levels quickly rise. Around the district, the rain began at around 3am and across two significant downpours over 60mm fell. During the storm on Thursday, at its peak in Westbrook winds picked up to over 50km/h and saw anything not tied down, such as play equipment and trampolines, become very dangerous. Following the rain, several roadways were affected by both flash flooding and creek levels rising. Greenmount Etonvale Road became impassable quickly and was joined by the bridge crossing Hodgson Creek at Cambooya and many other low-lying roads. There was flash flooding on the New England Highway near United Etonvale and the road was closed for around five hours at Sister Kenny Bridge, which crosses Kings Creek at Nobby. There was another 20mm or so of rain in the afternoon.

Regenerative cropping, grazing spiralling upwards

Regenerative agriculture is sometimes dismissed as meaning all things to all people, but to Dr Terry McCosker, Founding Director of Resource Consulting Services (RCS), the answer is clear: “Regenerative agriculture is about the outcomes you achieve, not the inputs you use.” To achieve regenerative outcomes, Dr McCosker said you need to adopt practices that regenerate healthy soil, improve plant health and regenerate animal and human health, leading to more profitable businesses, which support rural communities. “There is no one silver bullet for regenerative agriculture. It is based on principles rather than recipes, and fundamentally to be regenerating landscapes your ecosystems need to be spiralling up towards improved biodiversity and health, rather than spiralling down towards degradation,” he said. Moving forward, verification is going to become increasingly important rather than accreditation, as certain parts of the supply chain seek to source and pay premiums on regenerative AFFORDABLE PRECISION produce. AERIAL APPLICATION “Again, it is about outcomes. If you can demonstrate that dc@dronecommander.com.au your soil carbon is increasing or that you’re building natural Roger Woods BSc www.dronecommander.com.au capital, you’ve got evidence that your farm is regenerating,” 0400 283 319 Facebook.com/dronecommander Dr McCosker said. Promoting the biodiversity and abundance of soil microorganisms is central to the success of regenerative cropping or grazing, and photosynthesis drives that biodiversity in a positive feedback loop. “We are finding that as soil health improves, photosynthetic capacity increases, akin to having more solar panels in a solar farml,” Dr McCosker said. “As soil health improves, the plant directs more energy into plant production above ground and shunts less energy through its roots to repair soil health.” ~ Est. 1995 ~ Managing land regeneratively is also becoming more • Fully equipped workshop • Air-conditioning AUTOMOTIVE REPAIRS TO attractive to producers as it buffers businesses against an • Auto Electrical • Scan tool & EFI diagnostics ALL VEHICLES INCLUDING CARS, • Approved Inspection Station (RWC) • Mobile AIS increasingly unreliable climate. 4WD’S, TRUCKS, TRACTORS & • HVRAS approved • Vehicle Modifications Building ground cover and soil organic matter improves • Field service for tractors, farm equipment & machinery FARM MACHINERY. productivity, nutrient cycling and water infiltration. including stationary gensets & irrigation motors. Call for hay to feed flood affected stock

Hay contractors on the Darling Downs have answered a call from the Northern Rivers area of New South Wales to gather hay for stock impacted by the devastating floods in that region. The floods have washed away much of the feed on dairy farms and cattle properties and farmers are facing a difficult time trying to keep stock alive. Bill Burge of Tudor Valley Hay, along with Mike and Chris Collins of Collins Hay have banded together to respond to a call from the Northern Rivers. They have put out a call to anyone on the Downs who can assist with a donation of hay to contact them. Mr Burge said hay of any quality will be accepted. “We’ll take round bales, square bales - whatever - the stock have nothing to eat,” he said. The plan is to stockpile the hay at Allora before transporting it the a coordination site in northern New South Wales. Any contributions for fuel or transport would also be appreciated. For information, call Bill Burge on 0428 713 562, Mike Collins on 0408 959 105 or Chris Collins on 0438 959 105.

Bull attacks man

An incident between a man and a bull at Greenmount last Wednesday saw an RACQ LifeFlight helicopter called in. At 10.17am, Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) was alerted to an incident where a man had received lacerations from being attacked by a bull on a private property. A LifeFlight crew was tasked to the incident just after 10.30am. The helicopter landed on a road nearby the property and treated the man on the scene, in conjunction with QAS paramedics, for a puncture wound to the hip. A QAS spokesperson said the man is aged in his 70s and had been herding cattle. The patient was flown to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

where to go if you want or are able to attend. BOOKING OFFICER It looks as though we may have a person to fill the role of booking officer, further details to follow. In the meantime contact John on 0428 763 231 or 0431 014 618 for further details. CONTAINERS FOR CASH There are a couple of containers for cash bins at the Sports Club, so if you have spare empty cans and bottles that are suitable and would like to drop them off as a donation, please do so and support your local community. - Ted Cavanagh, Secretary

IRISH NIGHT CANCELLED The first function for the year, our annual Irish night on Friday the 11th of March is cancelled due to there being no safe road vehicle access into the sports club. The culvert crossing over the creek is closed as it has been undermined and there is a steep drop off on one side. This situation is even more dangerous at night time. We, in conjunction with TRC, hope to get an alternate route via the top car park but due to workloads and the ongoing wet weather this will most likely not be achievable this week. We hope to be able to go ahead with the function the following weekend but this might not happen depending on the culvert repair works or an alternate access road being built in time. This will also have an affect on any private functions that patrons may want to use the HCSC club for. BOOKINGS Any future bookings will be subject to Covid restrictions and road access and may have to be cancelled at short notice if government Covid rules require this. To do an inspection and make a booking call 0431 014 618. CLUB MEETING Our first general club meeting for this year will be at Maureen’s residence on this Thursday at 7pm the 11th of March, contact John on 0431 014 618 for further details of

TUTU FOR TUESDAY Students, staff and parents celebrated an extremely rare palindrome date, 22-2-22, on Tuesday. Tutus were worn and a $2 donation was collected as a fundraising event for the Project Club. We raised $443 in total and this money will be used to go towards a project chosen by the Project Club. It was a tu-cute day to celebrate last Twosday! - Year 5A CONSTRUCTION PLAYGROUND The students of Bunker’s Hill have helped Mrs Byrd and Mr Campling create a “Construction Playground”. The idea of a play area where students can create and construct has been on the wish list for a long time.

Thursday, March 10, 2022

In this play area, students are encouraged to use their creativity using natural materials to make, build and construct. It has been very popular with the students and every day there are many wonderful and amazing constructions being created.

Cambooya State School DEDICATED CAMBOOYA RUNNERS Cross Country season is fast approaching and some of the students at Cambooya State School are already in training. A lunch time running club has been in action at Cambooya for the past few weeks during 2nd break. A group of very dedicated students has been in training for the Cross Country and the students have been giving up their play time to improve their stamina for the big day. At times the conditions have been quite challenging for them, especially as the weather recently has been quite hot and humid. We wish them all the best for the Cross Country in week 8.

April start for Downs Polo

The Downs Polo Club will start season 2022 with the revival of the Eagers Shield Downs Fixtures, which were first contested in 1958. The winning team of that year was West Haldon Whites and team members were Dave MacGinley, Joe MacGinley, Herb Cook, Pat O’Sullivan and Hoey Cook. This year the Shield will be played for over the two weekends of the 2nd and 3rd April and the 9th and 10th April. This is traditionally a tournament that has a history of being hard fought and difficult to win. A number of the players who started their careers on the Downs have progressed to playing in many countries all over the world with some of the families playing into their 3rd and 4th generations. After this the club will run the following events: Downs Low Goal, 23rd and 24th April; Downs Shield Annual Tournament, 4th and 5th June; Cooke O’Leary, 16th and 17th July; Silvershop, 23rd and 24th July Sapphire Shield, 30th and 31st July. The Club would like to invite any past players, spectators, potential players and any other interested people to come along and join them. Catering will be available all weekends. Downs Polo is played on the fields at the Clifton Recreation Grounds.
