OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALLIST VISITS EMU CREEK Sara Carrigan OAM, an Olympic Gold Medallist, visited Emu Creek as part of the Olympics Unleashed program. Olympics Unleashed connects athletes with schools across the country to inspire students to find and follow their passion and provide lessons in goal setting, overcoming challenges and developing resilience. Sara drew on her Olympic journey and overcoming her own challenges to compete in her chosen sport at the highest level. She inspired the students at Emu Creek State School to be the best they can be – whether that’s in school, at home, on the sporting field or with friends. After her visit, students drew their dreams and passions that they will ‘put their heart into’ as they aspire to be their best. Toowoomba Hospital wait times lead state

Figures from the Queensland Government from June 2022 show a patient waited nearly 12 hours and 53 minutes after presenting to Toowoomba Hospital, the longest time anywhere in the state. were still significant, clocking in at 9 hours and 23 minutes and 8 hours and 40 minutes respectively. Minister D’Ath said anyone who presents to a Queensland hospital will be seen - no one will ever be turned away. “However, the sickest, most critically ill people will be seen and treated first,” she said. From 29 September 2021 to 25 May 2022, hospitals across the Darling Downs region lost 125 beds including six from at Toowoomba Hospital and 19 at Warwick Hospital.

The second longest wait was 10 hours and 34 minutes, followed by 10 hours and 32 minutes, 9 hours and 58 minutes and 8 hours and 49 minutes. The top four were all higher than any other hospital in Queensland, with the next highest being at Mackay. These times are before the patient is taken to the emergency department or another ward for treatment. Shadow Health Minister Ros Bates said nobody should have to wait up to 13 hours before their first interaction with a nurse. “The embattled Health Minister can’t be trusted to fix the health system,” Ms Bates said. “Under Yvette D’Ath, ambulance ramping is the worst in the nation, bed block is back, ambulance bypass has returned, multiple failures at the state-run DNA laboratory, surgery malpractice at Caboolture and Mackay hospitals, emergency departments are packed, elective surgery waitlists have soared, maternity services closed in Gladstone and staff morale is at an all-time low.” While the wait times were the longest in June for the Toowoomba Hospital, the longest wait times in April and May

NOBBY STATE SCHOOL Celebrates 125 years

Thursday, November 10, 2022

From the Principal I am privileged to be able to submit the Principal’s message for this publication, celebrating the previous 25 years of education at Nobby State School. My time at Nobby began in 2008, and I have spent most of the previous 15 years here. My time at Nobby has made reliving, researching recounting the past 25 years a simpler process, however it wasn’t always easy! The 125th Anniversary has been in the planning phase since June 2021, some 17 months prior to the day itself. Delving into the history, speaking with past students, parents, staff and P&C executives has been rewarding, thought provoking, even amazing at times, and I’m glad I was able to be involved. I spoke with many past staff and students, including teacher aide Olive Venz, who relived her Nobby days fondly, and past student Stephanie Nash, who kindly gave me a great deal of her time. This school is built on core beliefs and key values, seemingly embedded into the ground on which the school sits. It appears that the students mould the school while the school moulds the students. It’s a cyclical never ending process of evolution, one that will veer in its trajectory ever so slightly as people come and go and leave their mark.

Past and present students of Nobby State School will celebrate its 125th Anniversary on 12th November 2022 in what promises to be busy day of nostalgia and activities commencing at 9.30 am with a sign in by past students, roll call and photos at 1.00pm followed by market stalls, displays, student performances, Duck Races and a Bush dance beginning at 4pm.

However the truth remains, that Nobby State School is a strong, well respected and proud, small country school. A school full of adults who love small schools, who strive to leave the place slightly better than when they arrived. Typically, the staff are not Nobby locals, and it is therefore up to the parents and the community, to continue to steer the direction of the school. The 125th Anniversary, so important an event, required a large band of supporters and helpers, and this project certainly received that in spades. Thanks to all of the people who attended planning meetings, who took on a role, who spoke, chatted and negotiated until we got it right. Your efforts are applauded and I thank each and every one of you for your support, keenness, willingness and dedication to the process.

Tim Youngberry

Nobby school began in 1897 as the Nobby Provisional School on what was known as Gamblings Corner, situated half way between the site of the present school and Steele Rudd corner. Despite much lobbying over many years by Nobby residents the government refused to move the school to the actual Nobby township and it was not until 1924 that locals achieved a school on the current site. With 125 years of service the school reflects the changes that have taken place in Australian society over time. A revolution in means of transport, equality for women, moral standards and methods of discipline for students have all undergone dramatic change in the 125 years of Nobby school.

Memories .......

SEKO ROLLERMILL

THE MCGOVERN FAMILY The McGovern family rode horses to school. The eldest member of the family, John, started school at Nobby riding a horse called Toby. This horse rarely made it past the two mile mark on the way to school but it was always a faster and much easier ride home. Toby was a three year old when he started taking John to school. Graham Quinlan (our next door neighbour) was riding him to school twenty years later. Riding a horse to school on cold winter mornings is still a memory. The hands and feet would be blue from the cold and the water in the horses trough would be frozen on top. The McGovern children rode horses to school until the younger ones started, then we used to travel by sulky. As well as McGoverns traveling by sulky the Phelan, Bishop and Larkin families did likewise. We sure had some fun, during the years we spent at the Nobby school.

Hodgsonvale Community Sports Club

Our Friday night function went off well with a good crowd attending to enjoy the last minute change of the menu from Marg and Ted, being roast beef and gravy and pickled pork, with white sauce and fresh vegetables instead of pizzas. The members’ draw, worth $40, saw number 42 come out belonging to Tony and Jeanette McGrory who were not there so didn’t get to pick up the prize. The members’ draw goes up to $60 this week. Remember you must be there and financial to pick up the prize. The meal this Friday night will be a barbecue supplied by Terry and Helen at $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12. Our bar is available with the usual stock plus some nice Jacob’s Creek and McGuigan wines, now in stock.

There is a good variety of locally made Crows Nests soft drinks now as well, including their famous Double Sars. The tennis courts are also open and free to use on Friday nights as well. The grounds are still very wet at the moment with recent rain so please be careful when using or walking near the oval etc. Our Community Christmas function will be held on Friday the 25th of November this year commencing at 5.30pm and Santa will arrive around 6.30pm. So if you are coming please help Santa out and bring along some presents, also if you could let us know if you are coming and how many either by email or mobile call or text that would be appreciated for catering purposes. The air conditioned sports club is open for private functions so please contact Mark, our booking officer. The mobile contact is 0431 014 618 for further details, inspections and future bookings. You can also check out our website to see what facilities are available or you can send an email to hcsc8315@gmail.com Discounts apply for financial members who hire the facility. The tennis courts are available for hire, the keys are available at the Hodgson Vale shop. - Ted Cavanagh
