Tom and Dan were joined by Will Ready from Toowoomba (previously Warwick) and Oliver Harding, also from Toowoomba.

All four boys have represented Queensland and compete in the Toowoomba A Grade men’s hockey competition.

They travelled to Canberra last week for the Australian Hockey National Under 18 Futures Camp, which was overseen by a name very familiar to those who follow the Kookaburras or simply hockey at the Olympics.

The finale will be a free fireworks show from 7.55pm.

“The new name highlights the excitement of a street fiesta, with the colour, sights and sounds of musical and dance performances set among a wide selection of international food and market stalls,” Mrs House said.

“One central stage will host the major musical and dance performances with roving performers popping up around the laneways.”

Relay for Life fights back against cancer

Raising over $38,000 the recently held Toowoomba nine-hour Relay for Life event brought together 145 contestants determined to remember, celebrate and fight back against cancer.

It kicked off with Norm Kerr from the Society of St Andrew leading the first lap whilst playing the bagpipes and the atmosphere was kept alive by local bands Teleena Peck and Rusty Pick Ups.

An outpouring of community support saw constant smiles throughout the event with performances by Everdance Studio, eighties themed aerobic sessions by Fernwood, and a heartfelt performance by the Toowoomba Caledonian Society Pipe Band at the conclusion of the candlelight ceremony.

Participants were grateful to the Rapid Relief team and the Lions for their support across the events, as well as sponsors Masterhire, Purple Trucks and Hip Pocket Workwear & Safety.

Teams committed to walking, running and rolling around the track to signify that cancer never rests and neither would they.

The event fostered a close knit community feeling with teams already looking forward to next year.

Registrations for the 2023 Toowoomba Relay For Life on Saturday 6th May at Queens Park are now open.

Optimistic report released by MLA

Meat and Livestock Australia’s (MLA) third annual Producer Adoption Outcomes Report has declared that the various MLA adoption programs are delivering outstanding results for participating producers.

The report showed that 10,709 producers participated in learning and training activities to grow their business.

MLA adoption programs delivered $899.3million* in total benefits to participating producers who adopted a new practice between 2015-22 and in 2021-22 this was $54.3million in annual net benefits to participating producers.

“Continual improvements in monitoring and evaluation processes in adoption projects will allow MLA to better demonstrate the complete impact these projects have onfarm,” Program Manager Sally Leigo said.

“Record livestock prices have led to great optimism in the red meat industry and 89 per cent of participating producers were satisfied with the adoption program, while 76 per cent indicated an intent to change practices on-farm.”

Return on investment between $6-$20/ha for flagship MLA adoption programs PDS, PGS and EDGE Network.

10,709 producers were involved in MLA adoption activities influencing 11.3 million sheep, 7.1 million cattle, 210,000 goats and 150.3 million hectares of grazing land.

PROFITABLE GRAZING SYSTEMS

PGS saw significant growth engagement and return on investment to producers in the last year.

This was driven by the increased delivery of 19 total PGS Support Learning Packages across 55 active groups in Northern Australia.

As a result of this, producers representing more than 18 million hectares in northern regions were engaged in the

program.

Those producers achieved an average of $4-17/km2 of additional financial net benefits to participating producers between 2015-22 and according to Ms Leigo, the program will deliver $243.8million* in total net benefits to participating producers between 2015-22.

“This includes $103.7million* of additional total net benefit for producers who participated in the SLP’s in 2021.”

PRODUCER DEMONSTRATION SITES

PDS have delivered $194.5million* in total net benefits to participating producers as a result of projects completed between 2015-22.

MLA’s investment in PDS since 2015 has delivered $12.7million in annual net benefits, or $6.68/ha average additional net benefit to producers in 2021-22.

In the past year there were 519 active sites across 87 active projects.

EDGE NETWORK WORKSHOPS

MLA’s EDGE network gives producers the opportunity to develop the skills necessary to improve their livestock enterprises by participating in one to three day workshops.

Edge delivered $386.4million* in net benefits to participating producers as a result of workshops attended between 2015-22.

“MLA wants to give a massive thank you to the 10,709 producers who got involved in MLA adoption programs in 2021-2022 and the 114 service providers and MLA’s adoption team who delivered these activities,: Ms Leigo said.

* Calculated as net present value of adoption to 2045, discounted at 5 per cent annually.

Knowles oversaw four days of intensive skills and drills sessions culminating in two games held between the 38 (32 able to attend the camp) nationally recognised young male players who were invited and able to attend a 12 month development program run by Hockey Australia.

Those who attended can be counted among the top one per cent of hockey players in Australia.

In attendance were specialist coaches from hockey centres across Australia, providing instruction, supervision and implementation of the latest and best skills and management of training, preparation and life skills for these promising future representative hockey players.

Players from all states and territories of Australia were brought together in one venue at the AIS sport facility and

Repairs on main streets

Well-used streets in both Nobby and Greenmount are in the process of receiving minor work.

Works were carried out on Greenmount Connection Road (Ramsay Street) last Thursday, 6 October and will continue on Nobby Connection Road (Sister Kenny Street) between 6am and 6pm, Wednesday 19 October to Friday 21 October, weather permitting.

A Department of Transport and Main Roads spokesperson said the work, being carried out on statecontrolled roads, includes repairing potholes and other defects in the surface

“Single-lane closures and a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h will be in place during work hours only,” the spokesperson said.

“Motorists should expect delays of up to five minutes.

“Further work to resurface the road will be conducted between late 2022 and early 2023.”

ACT hockey centre to provide this opportunity.

The boys were helped along their journey by former Toowoomba Hockey Association Regional Coaching and Hockey Manager Matt Cook, who has recently moved to take on a position in Canberra Hockey.

Also pivotal to their success have been the many volunteers in coaching and administrators who have provided the opportunity for these boys to achieve what they have.

Darling Downs Health launches equity strategy

Darling Downs Health has launched its health equity strategy to improve health outcomes and ensure life expectancy parity by 2031 for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Over the next three years, the strategy will focus on eliminating racial discrimination and institutional racism, increasing access to healthcare services, influencing the social, cultural, and economic determinants of health, delivering sustainable, culturally safe, and responsive healthcare services, and work with Aboriginal people, Torres Strait Islander communities and organisations to design, deliver, monitor and review health service.

The Strategy was developed in partnership with staff, consumers, community members, primary care organisations, and state-level implementation partners.

Darling Downs Health Chief Executive Annette Scott PSM said the plan provided a strong focus on change and a commitment to improving health outcomes for First Nation people.

“Health equity will need to see reform, change, and improvement across the entire health system in a way that is physically, culturally, and psychologically safe, that doesn’t come with assumptions and unconscious racism,” she said.

“This strategy has been informed and developed in consultation with many stakeholders to make sure that we are meeting the needs of our communities.”

Darling Downs Health Director of Indigenous Health Rica

Lacey said that health equity starts in the health service, but it will have far-reaching implications across our communities.

“If Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are healthier and living longer, individuals will have a greater quality of life, culture can be passed down unbroken, and our communities will be more resilient,” Ms Lacey said.

GREENMOUNT STATE SCHOOL OPTIONS PROGRAM

Wow, how fortunate are the students of the Greenmount School? Whoever thought education could be this enjoyable and fascinating?

Many years ago, Greenmount School won an Education Queensland award for the introduction of our Options

Due to its popularity with the students, staff and community; we have continued this program ever since.

As part of our Options Program this year, students had the opportunity to choose between sewing, painting with

State School Greenmount Greenmount water colours, leatherwork, woodwork, cooking and candle, soap and lip balm

Year 6 students always get their first choice as it is their final year to participate in this wonderful, creative aspect of education.

Once again, we would like to take this opportunity to thank our eight hard working volunteers for their dedication to our students and for making these few days so enjoyable and so successful.

These are the lessons that will never be forgotten by our students and the items that they have created will always remind them of their fruitful, happy and productive times spent with ‘extended family’.

The wide range of activities Greenmount students have been involved with through the Options Program includes several artistic endeavours.

Local park a hidden, historic gem

just a kilometre or two off the New England

but Steele Rudd Memorial Park

a must visit attraction

Arthur Hoey Davis, better known by his pen name of Steele Rudd has certainly left a legacy, not just for the our local area

for the whole nation as his fictional work ‘On Our Selection’ has helped shape Australian culture.

On the way to the park you may like to call into Rudd’s Pub in Nobby where visitors will be overwhelmed by the Steele Rudd memorabilia hanging from every wall and ceiling in the historic pub.

However, to experience a glimpse of the hardships of pioneer life a visit to Steele Rudd Memorial Park is a stark reminder of the courage, determination and resilience of the early settlers such as Arthur Davis and his family.

The park itself sits on the crest of a hill on Steele Rudd Road and passing through the gate entrance the visitor can press a button to begin an audio introduction to the buildings contained within the park.

The centrepiece of the park is the replica shingle slab timber hut where the Davis family endured the cold Toowoomba weather in a one room hut with a dirt floor and too many openings for the icy winter winds.

Children will no doubt be shocked by the lack of basic

Public liability Insurance Prompt Service

creature comforts with no running water and heaven forbid no electricity means no TV and no internet!

Other buildings include a small timber animal shelter and a variety of basic farming implements scattered around the beautifully maintained grassed area.

It’s not difficult in this setting to allow the imagination to picture Rudd’s fictional characters of Dad, Dave and Mabel carrying out their daily duties.

A public toilet and gas barbecue are available for visitors.

A visit to the park is not only an enjoyable experience but an educational one, so if not for yourself then visit the park for your children.

Showcase impresses

A huge crowd was thrilled by the Country Music Showcase held at Gowrie Little Plain Hall recently.

The crowd saw the Lindsay Waddington, Allan Caswell, Ken Lindsay and Lynchburg concert last Saturday.

It was sponsored by Toowoomba Regional Council. The hall’s next concert is on 26 November featuring Errol Gray “‘he backyard balladeer’ and bush poet Gary Fogarty.

For bookings, phone Shirley on 4630 4384.
