Some good news going into the Christmas-New Year break for those who have been keen followers of Lochie, the Greenmount legend! Lochie made a special appearance to welcome those who were going to or passing through Greenmount over the holiday period.
Thank goodness for 2021
Ten Points to Ponder after a year most people would probably prefer to forget - 2020: 1. The dumbest thing I ever bought was a 2020 planner. 2. 2019: Stay away from negative people. 2020: Stay away from positive people. 3. The world has turned upside down. Old folks are sneaking out of the house & their kids are yelling at them to stay indoors! 4. This morning I saw a neighbour talking to her cat. It was obvious she thought her cat understood her. I came to my house & told my dog.... We had a good laugh. 5. Every few days try your jeans on just to make sure they fit. Pyjamas will have you believe all is well in the kingdom. 6. Does anyone know if we can take showers yet or should we just keep washing our hands? 7. I never thought the comment, “I wouldn’t touch him/her with a 6-foot pole” would become a national policy, but here we are! 8. I need to practice social-distancing ....from the refrigerator. 9. I hope the weather is good tomorrow for my trip out to the bins! 10. Never in a million years could I have imagined I would go into a bank with a mask on and ask for money.

support local community events Mayor urges LOCAL BUSINESSES and organisations residents to be aware of COVID guidelines
Toowoomba Region Mayor Paul Antonio is calling on residents to follow the latest Queensland Health COVID-19 following the three-day lockdown in the Greater Brisbane region last weekend. Mayor Antonio said while the Toowoomba Region was excluded from the area that was locked down (Greater Brisbane and the Ipswich, Moreton Bay, Redlands and Logan local government areas), it was imperative for residents to follow the latest updates. “As the state government has recommended, residents should avoid visiting the areas,” Mayor Antonio said. “Anyone who does enter the areas listed will have to follow the lockdown guidelines. “It is important for residents to follow the established health and safety guidelines that have served us well to date. “Please stay at home if you are unwell and arrange to be tested if you have any COVID-19 symptoms, no matter how mild. “Stay 1.5 metres away from other people, wash your hands properly with soap and water (or sanitiser) and leave a location if it is crowded. “Now is not the time to relax or ignore these important health protocols. “Toowoomba Region residents have displayed common sense in their approach to safeguard their families and the wider community since the start of the Coronavirus early last year. “I thank residents for listening to the health advice and willingly acting to keep everyone safe. “Council will continue to monitor all state and federal government announcements and will act in accordance with any directives to keep our region safe.” For the latest health advice, please visit the Queensland Health website - https://www.health.qld.gov.au/

The Regional Investment Corporation (RIC) AgriStarter Loan has launched and loan applications are now open. The AgriStarter Loan has two uses, supporting new farmers to purchase, establish or develop their first farm business, or to assist existing farm businesses with succession planning arrangements. RIC CEO Bruce King said that the AgriStarter Loan provides affordable terms to support eligible new and intergenerational Australian farmers to purchase a new farm business, establish or develop their farm business or enter an existing farm partnership. “The RIC is pleased to launch the AgriStarter Loan to support new farmers,” Mr King said. “The interest only repayments, at a low variable rate for the first five years will certainly appeal to new farm business owners to allow them to focus on establishing their operation and their cash flow. “The AgriStarter Loan can assist new farmers to buy, establish or develop a farm business, as well as help farming families undertake their succession planning. “The AgriStarter Loan is also available to eligible farmers who have recently purchased a farm business yet need a loan to invest in infrastructure or machinery to develop their farm business and make it their primary income earning source,” Mr King said. “At the RIC, we believe the AgriStarter Loan will contribute to a stronger and more diverse agricultural industry through affordable finance for new Australian farmers.” The AgriStarter Loan allows up to $2 million to be borrowed over 10 years with at least 50 per cent of an applicant’s total debt required to be held with their existing bank. The first five years of an AgriStarter Loan are interest only, then the remaining five years are principal and interest repayments. The current variable rate is 1.92 per cent. The Federal Government has provided $75 million for AgriStarter Loan applications this financial year. YEAR IN REVIEW
January
We mourned the passing of Cr Carol Taylor’s husband, Roger who passed away after succumbing to complications following a brown snake attack. Plenty attended the Pilton Soldier’s Memorial Hall centenary celebrations to remember its significance over the past 100 years. It was a brilliant start to the year rainfall-wise for the region, with Greenmount recording readings of more than 100mm. Helen Naumann was named Cambooya district’s Citizen of the Year for her ongoing support of the Felton Hall, the Felton Food Festival and Friends of Felton.
February
Volunteers from the Cambooya Rural Fire Brigade met with government representatives to discuss their point of view after a devastating fire season destroyed parts of the country. The good weather continued throughout the region with Westbrook seeing readings of more than 300mm since the weather pattern began. Friends of Felton launched a new campaign to help combat roadside litter to keep the region’s roads clean. Cambooya riders Ellie Stenzel and Emma Massey performed well at the Clifton Show, awarded Supreme District Hack and Open Hack respectively.
March
A train derailed near Greenmount causing significant damage to itself and the railway lines in the process. Thankfully, no one was injured. The future of the Fernleigh subdivision that planned to double the population of Westbrook was put on hold with the developer moving to cancel the project over issues with Toowoomba Regional Council guidelines. A family in the Ascot Factory area lost $75,000 worth of hay after a large fire tore through their shed. Former Clifton student Hayden Bellingham was awarded the T. J. Ryan Memorial Medal and Scholarship.

April
Campgrounds, halls, parks and sports fields were just some of the facilities that were closed because of COVID-19. Darling Downs Zoo welcomed its first successful hatching of a rhinoceros iguana, one of few good moments for the zoo that was forced to close due to COVID. New Councillor Rebecca Vonhoff blew her competition out of the water in the Toowoomba Regional Council election race, receiving more votes than any other returning Councillor. Rebecca Vonhoff joined Kerry Shine, Tim McMahon and Melissa Taylor as new members of council. Paul Antonio was also comfortably re-elected as mayor. Greenmount-based organic grain producer Kialla Foods hired more staff to deal with growing demand for its products.
May
Primary and secondary school students in the region got a taste of what it was like learning from home as teachers came up with inventive new methods of continuing the curriculum. It was a testing time for students, staff and parents who had to quickly adapt to the situation. It wasn’t long before students were back at school however, and they were all smiles as they got to see their friends again. Council slowly began to open community facilities, with parks, outdoor gyms, pools and libraries opening their doors once more. The Cambooya Landcare Group was successful in securing two grants worth almost $40,000 to help protect valuable agricultural land in the region.
June
Darling Down Zoo re-opened being closed for several months. The zoo had ongoing monthly expenses of $110,000 whilst closed to the public but said the generosity and support of the community kept the attraction going. Mayor Paul Antonio publicly announced his support for the Fernleigh project at Westbrook, saying the region needed something like it. Wyreema State School was announced to be a part of the State Government’s new anti-cyberbullying campaign, sharing in a $750,000 roll out.

YEAR IN REVIEW
As newspapers across the state began to be scrapped, On Our Selection News announced its intention to continue its publication well into the future. A $7 million upgrade to Wyreema State School was progressing well in July, in what was a huge coup for a school scheduled to close earlier in the decade. Planning began for a new waste facility to be established at Greenmount. Libraries across the region re-opened for short visits after closing due to COVID-19. Work on Drayton Connection Road, at the intersection of Newman Road and Luck Road, neared completion. The notorious intersection outside the Vale View State School had seen a number of serious crashes, including two deaths, in the past five years. Cambooya was one of the destinations for a 71-years-old Brisbane man who led police on a dramatic pursuit through the region. A new Catholic school was proposed for Westbrook, with the Catholic Schools Office of the Diocese of Toowoomba applying to Toowoomba Regional Council for a zoning change to enable future development.
August
TRC Councillor and Greenmount resident Megan O’Hara Sullivan announced her intention to stand for State Parliament, more specifically, Toowoomba North. It was announced that the Greenmount TRC Service Centre would remain closed for the foreseeable future even though others across the region began to re-open with the easing of restrictions. The decision was made “for the time being”, according to Cr Kerry Shine, but as of January 2021, the Centre has still not been re-opened. Seniors Week was celebrated in a much more virtual way this year, with many of the events and activities held online with fears in-person events could spread COVID-19. Toowoomba Regional Council called on the Queensland Government to undertake a regional water supply options assessment for the Darling Downs.
September
It was now spring and Clifton residents finally remembered just what it was like to have colours blooming in the town after a devastating year of drought in 2019. Residents were confined to their driveways for the annual Remembrance Day, with ceremonies unable to be held due to COVID restrictions. Dr John McVeigh announced his retirement as Member for Groom. A barley crop that was planted entirely by drone was hailed as a big success by Drone Commander’s Roger Woods who was blown away by the results.

October
Family-owned fresh vegetable producer, Story Fresh announced that they will be adding a $1 million multispectrum electronic sorter to the business. Story Fresh received a helping hand through a Rural Economic Development Fund grant. A 21-years-old Toowoomba man was killed in a crash at East Greenmount when the vehicle he was driving collided head-on with a truck in the early hours of the morning. Darling Downs Zoo welcomed its first ever giraffe calf in what was a very rare and proud moment for staff who were still recovering after a tough few months of closure. Former Clifton SES group leader Tony Fenner was awarded life membership of the Queensland SES group. Mr Fenner was also awarded a 30 Year Meritorious Clasp which recognised his dedicated service.
November
It was a big month for growers who had a successful harvest for the first time in quite a while. Although there was a dry spell mid-way through 2020, the big falls in October and through the early part of the year prompted good growth. The region put its support behind Pat Weir, giving him the thumbs-up to remain as Member for Condamine in the 2020 State Election. Mr Weir received 55% of the vote. Cambooya firies Rohan and Nathan Greer both received National Service Medals for 10 and 15 years of service respectively. Cr Carol Taylor advocated for community halls, urging residents to show support for the Greenmount Hall in particular.
December
LNP’s Garth Hamilton was named the new Member for Groom with a convincing 66 per cent two party preferred. The Greenmount Returned Soldiers Memorial Hall held its annual Twilight Markets which were well-supported by residents. Cambooya’s own street library was officially opened by YellowBridge’s Geoffrey Whitbread after a joint initiative between Cambooya Landcare and Toowoomba Regional Council. Popular Wyreema-based wedding venue Bracknell Lodge submitted an application to Council for a proposed $1 million indoor equestrian arena. Felton district resident Ian Whan was included as one of 13 members on Toowoomba Regional Council’s new Environment Advisory Committee.

CENTRAL DOWNS CRICKET
Dowe shines again for Nobby
Nobby cricketer Tim Dowe was the pick of the bowlers after an impressive display in an 89 run win over Millmerran with the Central Downs Cricket competition back in full swing following a well-deserved Christmas break. Millmerran hosted Nobby and it was the visitors coming out on top by 89 runs after a dominant display from the bowlers. Winning the toss and batting, Nobby left the gates firing with an opening partnership of 58 from 52 balls before Cam Moodie was dismissed for 38. A second wicket in the following over sparked a fire under Millmerran who were able to keep many of the Nobby batters to single digit totals. Wally Eather (26) and the always reliable Tim Dowe (27 from 14 balls) chipped in to get Nobby a competitive score to defend, bowled out for 170 in 37.4 overs. F.O.W.: 58, 58, 72, 115, 143, 151, 151, 158, 163, 170. For Millmerran, Trent Mullins led with the ball, collecting an astounding 4/5 (7) with four maidens. Contributions from Jack McCullough, 3/38 (7.4); Brendan Schaumburg, 1/17 (4); James Nardello, 1/17 (4); and Scott Schultz, 1/56 (7) were all paramount in keeping Nobby’s total within chasing distance. For Millmerran James Sinclair and Jack McCullough opened the chase for the hosts, but it would be a short opening stint with both falling within the first three overs. Alex Kahler (30) and Trent Mullins (23) provided a small resistance in the middle order, but it would be in vain with Millmerran falling well short of the target, bowled out for 81 in 21.5 overs. F.O.W.: 2, 2, 41, 41, 43, 53, 75, 75, 81, 81. Tim Dowe was again the pick of the bowlers for Nobby, grabbing 4/17 (8) with three maidens. Cam Moodie, 3/17 (2.5); James Cain, 2/9 (3); and Jake Gill, 1/20 (3) helped Nobby secure a comfortable win. NEXT WEEK’S ACTION With completion of the first week back, it’s Bowenville leading over Nobby by just four points. However, with Bowenville having the bye in the next round of games, it will be a chance for Nobby to take the lead as they take on Pittsworth at Nobby; and for Kulpi to jump Millmerran when they meet at Goombungee. There will be no Central Downs Cricket this Sunday as the Central Downs representative team plays Lockyer in Toowoomba at Captain Cook Oval 6. - Brendan Cahill

Hike to Heal
Hike to Heal is hosting a novel Scavenger Hike at Westbrook’s Mount Peel from Saturday 20th to Sunday 28th February. The Scavenger Hike is to raise community awareness around mental health issues and much needed funds to support Lifeline Darling Downs. The Barton Family knows about the impact first-hand: “In the next 24 hours 8 Australians will die by suicide,” Jim Barton said. “Suicide has a devastating impact on families, friends and whole communities. “Our son, brother and friend was one of these eight lives lost on the 2nd of November 2016. “Hike to Heal arose from our family’s need to make meaning from our loss and a desire to help destigmatise mental health.” The Scavenger Hike is Hike to Heal’s Inaugural Event. People can participate in the Scavenger Hike as a family or team of four, for $25, or individually for $10. Participants will be invited to take and share creative photographs of items and activities from the Scavenger Hike challenges whilst enjoying an outdoor hike at Mount Peel. If it suits better, they can undertake their hike at their local nature reserve. Participants can hike any distance on any day or time between the two dates and are encouraged to post their photographs or videos of challenge items and activities on Hike to Heal’s Facebook and Instagram for a chance to win prizes. Hike to Heal is being organised in conjunction with Westbrook Focus Group Inc., the support of Toowoomba Regional Council and major sponsors: Jett Templeton (Ray White Toowoomba), Computer Ambulance and Drayton Medical Centre. Funds raised will support Lifeline Darling Downs’ Creative Coping Program. “With everything Australia has gone through recently, mental health support programs are needed more than ever,” Mr Barton said. “Help us reach our goal to raise $10,000 to increase the number of places available in this program.” For more information or to register go to www.facebook.com/ HiketohealatMtPeel and Instagram @hiketohealmtpeel
