Memory Walk & Jog in Toowoomba

Locals are getting ready for the Toowoomba Pop Up Memory Walk & Jog event in 2022, which will be held on Saturday 4 June at Queens Park. Dementia Australia CEO Maree McCabe AM said Dementia Australia was excited to see the Memory Walk & Jog event come to Toowoomba for the first time in 2022. “The Memory Walk & Jog series is Dementia Australia’s biggest fundraising initiative, and helps us provide invaluable support, education and resources for people living with dementia in Australia, their carers, families and friends,” Ms McCabe said. “It has been my pleasure to take part in many Memory Walk & Jog events across Australia over the years, and I attest to how enjoyable and rewarding they are. They really do offer fun for all the family! “These events are so important, not just from a fundraising perspective, but also because they are opportunities for people impacted by dementia to gather, to get active and to share stories with people in similar circumstances. “Together, we can make the world look brighter for people with dementia. Let’s show them they are not alone!” Currently there are an estimated 94,000 people living with dementia in Queensland. With that figure projected to increase to about 207,000 by 2058, events like Memory Walk & Jog play an important role not only in funding support, but also in raising awareness of dementia. There are 19 Memory Walk & Jog events planned across Australia in 2022, which represents the series’ largest event program to date. Each event offers fun for people of all ages and abilities. The course is family-friendly, and suitable for all levels of fitness. Each event is designed for people of all ages and abilities to select whether they take part in a walk, jog or run of the 1.9 kilometre or 4 kilometre course. Participate as an individual, get a team together, or even come in fancy dress. The safety and wellbeing of Memory Walk & Jog participants, volunteers and staff is Dementia Australia’s top priority at these events. The team is constantly monitoring the evolving situation with COVID-19, and remains in communication with the relevant federal, state and local authorities. A robust COVID-safe plan has been tailored for each event and will be adapted as needed. Westbrook Community Upholding the promise to “Remember Them”

On ANZAC Day 1922, a crowd gathered in Main Street, Westbrook. Just four short years after the end of World War I, the residents had raised enough funds to have erected a monument in stone. In one of those speeches, it was reported the following words were spoken. In his closing remarks Mr Groom said, “We dedicate this monument to the memory of the brave men who have gone west, The Digger statue has a and we dedicate it also as commanding presence an expression of gratitude during the Dawn Service, to all those brave men who as was the case last year. participated in this war, and trust that this monument will be preserved as the most sacred possession that this district has.” One hundred years on, the Westbrook Community is continuing to uphold its promise to remember the names of those WWI lads who answered when their country called. This year the Westbrook Hall Committee plans to hold two ANZAC Day services. The first will start at 5.30am sharp and will follow the usual Dawn Service format. The second special “Centenary Service” will start at 2.30pm sharp. Representatives of all levels of Government, as well as representatives of the R.S.L will be in attendance Friday 15th to Monday 18th APRIL and deliver speeches. Felton concert

Singer Emily Maguire was pleased with the crowd that rocked up for her concert at the Felton Hall on Saturday night. About fifty people turned up to hear the Sunshine Coast hinterland artist and they weren’t disappointed. Emily writes and sings her own material. Emily is touring smaller country halls as she builds a profile. She plans to return to the district with another performance down the track and is hoping word will spread about her ability. If the comments passed about last Saturday night’s performance are anything to go by, she won’t have trouble dragging in another, larger crowd. “I actually really enjoyed it,” one keen audience member said. “Emily has a pretty fabulous voice and writes her own songs, so was a great night out.”

Nobby Recreation Reserve gets a tart-up

Concern over the future of the Recreation Reserve at Nobby has hit a nerve with locals with a great roll up for a community working bee at the site last Saturday. The ten-acre reserve on Comerford Street was set upon by 30 willing local volunteers for a much-needed overhaul. Buzzing chainsaws manicured mature trees into oases of shade. Brooms and pressure cleaners swept away cobwebs and mouse droppings from the tired club house, showers and toilets. Rubbish was removed and grass slashed. The ancient tennis court took on the appearance of an archaeological dig as volunteers searched for the ant-bed court. While sausages sizzled and citizens slurped soft drinks a lively band of more than twenty children raced around on bikes, picnicked in the shade and played a boisterous game of cricket. Established early in the village’s history, the grounds hosted various recreational activities such as tennis, Vigoro and foot races. How should I act in an armed robbery?

In response to recent robberies, Darling Downs police have provided the following tips. Remember no amount of money or property is worth risking a life! Armed robberies can be traumatic for those involved and could have a significant impact on the health, safety and welfare of yourself and others involved. If your safety is threatened, do what you think will best preserve your safety, which could include running away, screaming, calling for assistance, or negotiating with the offender. Try to remain calm and keep space between you and the offender and only use physical defence as a last resort. If someone threatens you and tries to steal your possessions, the safest option is to surrender the items, take note of the offender’s description and immediately report the incident to police when safe to do so. Note the features of the offenders, including clothing, scars, tattoos, height, hair colour, accent and speech and any weapons. For evidentiary purposes, remember what the offender has touched and avoid touching it yourself. Call Triple Zero (000), provide your name and address and describe what happened and anything you can recall about the offender(s), their vehicle and direction of travel. If you observe suspicious or threatening behaviour, contact police immediately.

Heifer Creek crossing closed in early May

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is starting work to rehabilitate one of the crossings over Heifer creek on Gatton-Clifton Road in May 2022. Heifer Creek crossing no 6 is located about 3km north of the Lagoon Creek and MacGinley roads intersection at West Haldon. Gatton - Clifton Road will be closed to all traffic at the crossing for ten days from Tuesday 3 May 2022 to Friday 13 May 2022, weather and construction conditions permitting. Local traffic will be able to travel on Gatton-Clifton Road either side of the crossing, but because of the closure will not be able to travel between Fordsdale and West Haldon. Heavy vehicles and motorists travelling between Gatton and Clifton are recommended to detour via Toowoomba using the New England Highway, Toowoomba Connection Road and then the Warrego Highway. To rehabilitate the bridge, work crews will remove the existing road surface and deck planks from the bridge and place new plywood decking, resurface the road and install new guardrails. TMR thanks the public in advance for their patience during construction and asks that they follow all traffic management signs and signals, and instructions from traffic controllers.

Clifford Gardens vax clinic closing

After delivering 80,029 doses, the Toowoomba COVID-19 vaccination centre at Clifford Gardens Shopping Centre is closing today (Thursday). The doses have been delivered nearly every day since the clinic opened on 13 September 2021. Darling Downs Health Acting Chief Executive ShirleyAnne Gardiner said the success of the clinic demonstrated how health services can quickly respond to emerging situations. “The Toowoomba vaccination clinic was a purpose-built facility which allowed us to provide care and protection to the community during an unprecedented time. “I’m incredibly proud of how quickly our team at Darling Downs Health put this centre together. It was a real testament of our ability to respond to the emerging situation.” Acting Executive Lead, Health Emergency Operation Centre Michelle Forrest congratulated all of the residents who came forward to receive their vaccination. “We saw a great response from the Toowoomba community. “Members of the public were provided an incredible opportunity to get vaccinated and we were really encouraged by the response we received with 96 per cent of residents in our health service area aged 16 and over having now received at least two doses of the vaccine,” Ms Forrest said. “The clinic was always going to reach a point where it had served its purpose. “It provided the opportunity for people to get vaccinated, in a convenient location, and it has done that now. “The vaccine will still be readily available in different community settings including pop up and outreach vaccination clinics, and we’re looking forward to having our staff return to other roles across our health service.” Ms Gardiner also used the closing of this site as an opportunity to say thank you. “On behalf of our executive team, Board members and broader community, I would like to pass on my sincere thanks to all our staff who contributed to the success of this community clinic.”

Nobby Country Music event on again

The annual Nobby three-day Country Music Weekend, run by the Nobby Heritage and Development Association, is coming up from Friday 29th April to Sunday 1st May. The event, held in the local hall, is a walk-up show for all artists, whether new or professional. Past shows have featured a host of artists backed by a talented backing band, much to the enjoyment of the audience. The Nobby Country Music Weekend was first staged in 2015 with the help of three interested music lovers and has blossomed from there, artists come from many parts of Queensland and New South Wales. For further details call June Smith on 0488 963 108.

Rural Aid photography competition returns

Rural Aid’s hugely popular Spirit of the Bush photography competition has returned in 2022. More than 250 entries have already been received in the first week of the competition. Rural Aid CEO, John Warlters, said it is encouraging to see how eager Australians are to tell the stories of the bush through photography. “Now in its third year, our Spirit of the Bush competition just keeps growing,” Mr Warlters said. “The competition’s popularity is a testament to how much our nation supports our primary producers. “We’re so excited to again choose a set of 12 ripper photographs for use in Rural Aid’s 2023 calendar.” A Rural Aid panel will be tasked with the difficult job of choosing the most striking photos, when the competition closes in May. “We saw some breathtaking entries last year,” Mr Warlters said. “Incredible photographs of mustering, fencing, kids playing and rural landscapes were just some of the images that made this year’s calendar. “Looking at country life through a camera lens is one of the best ways to give the wider public a glimpse into life on the land. “I encourage anyone with a camera and a love for the bush to send their entries in.” Entries are encouraged via social media and through Rural Aid’s website. In addition to having their photos used in Rural Aid’s annual calendar, winners will also receive a $250 pre-paid visa card. Entries can be made at ruralaid.org.au/spirit-of-the-bush or by tagging #SOTB2022 in an Instagram or Facebook caption.

Two years ago, the Hike to Heal Australia launched the Scavenger Hike at Mt Peel. The event was designed to connect individuals with each other and inspire them to strengthen their own well-being while walking beside people managing mental ill health and suicide loss. With the support of Toowoomba Regional Council, business sponsors and the community, the event has been able to help improve the mental health of hundreds of local residents through hiking in nature, while raising thousands of dollars CLIFTON to provide resources and support for local suicide prevention LIC# 75685 and mental health services. This year’s fundraising target was $5000, and despite the wet conditions, the organisation was able to present a cheque for this amount to Grant Simpson, the CEO of Lifeline Darling Downs and South West Queensland. Hike to Heal Australia president, Linda Barton has extended her gratitude and thanks to the Toowoomba Regional Council for the Event Support Grant and to major sponsors, Computer Ambulance, Westbrook Family Medical and First National Real Estate, the many small businesses who also sponsored the event and the all those who participated in the event.
