RM’s vision a reality

The ambition of RM Williams to turn the Hodgson Vale polo grounds into an equestrian hub has come to fruition thanks to the work of his daughter-in-law Jo Williams. RM’s Equestrian Centre, as it has been named, is on the country, polocrosse, dressage and show jumping. Hodgson Vale Road site where there used to be polo facilities, Mrs Williams said re-imagining the 100-acre property into bistro and a bar. an equestrian centre began two years ago. The new venture will host a wide range of horse-related The process really got well underway last year after she had activities, including equestrian, an eventing course, cross a knee injury, with the extra time gained by not being able to do much else utilised for planning. “It’s been a full time job for the past four of five months,” Mrs Williams said. INSTALLS • QUOTES • MAINTENANCE Most of the land which now encompasses the course had been previously used for grazing cattle and required a mountain of man-hours to clear and get ready. The preparation included slashing and getting the obstacles ready by painting them and moving them into place. Mrs Williams said they had brought portable jumps in from New South Wales and other jumps, including tyre jumps, they had made themselves. Continued on page 14

Westbrook residents want main road safety improvements

Community consultation conducted by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has found Westbrook residents would like a wide range of safety improvements for Toowoomba-Athol Road.

In 2021, the community was invited to have its say on the safety of the Gore Highway and Toowoomba-Athol Road between Wyreema-Athol Road and James Street. Community consultation was conducted online using an interactive social mapping tool and concluded on 31 March. A Transport and Main Roads spokesperson said motorists identified key sections and intersections that could be upgraded to improve safety, including additional lanes for turning, overtaking and merging. Continued from page 2 Around Westbrook, this planning project proposes to improve: • The Toowoomba-Athol and Boundary roads intersection with a new median and updated line marking. • The Toowoomba-Athol and Ferguson roads intersection with new signs. • The Toowoomba-Athol and Westbrook roads intersection with a new turning lane. •Roadside hazard removal/protection through the area. The community feedback was included in a business case that was completed in December 2021. The business case will be used to seek funding for further development and construction of low-cost, high-benefit, safety improvements including signs, line marking, road widening and turning lanes. The Queensland Government committed $400,000 through the Transport System Planning Program to develop the business case. “While there is currently no time frame for delivery of these improvements, the work completed to date means the project will be able to progress quickly if funded for construction,” the spokesperson said.

Drones battling Fall armyworm Local agricultural business Drone Commander is using drones to combat the destructive insect fall armyworm (FAW).

Drone Commander has opened up a new front in the war with Fall armyworm by taking to the skies. Prevalent in crops with whorls such as sorghum and maize, FAW has been a menace to local crops this season.

Ritemate half button Shirts

In January, a Department of Agriculture and Fisheries spokesperson said most crops planted in the eastern Darling Downs in December 2021 and January 2022 have had an infestation. Drone Commander, based at Cambooya, has been using drones to combat FAW with good success. Drone Commander principal, Roger Woods said Fall armyworm had been appearing in local crops since early last year and farmers from here to the Sunshine Coast have been requesting his help to eliminate the pest from their crops. Mr Woods said he has been using fermented bacteria, which is very high tech, and a beneficial virus which especially attacks FAW. “It’s a precision strike. Very effective,” Mr Woods said. “The real benefit is it’s treating the pest in all of its life cycle stages in one application.”

Clean Up Australia Day tackling mask litter

This year’s Clean Up Australia Day (Sunday 6 March) has launched a nationwide ‘Citizen Science project’ to measure the extent of Australia’s face mask litter. In 2020, more than three billion single-use masks were thrown out across the globe every day, contributing to a significant portion of pandemic-related litter entering the environment. However, locally, the extent of this problem remains unclear. That’s why on Clean Up Australia Day volunteers will unmask the impact of this problem by tallying the number of face masks collected and removed from the environment. Pip Kiernan, Chair of Clean Up Australia, said there is no doubt the amount of plastic waste has been surging because of the pandemic. However, at present there is no data to confirm the number of face masks in our environment. “We can’t cover up the problem – now is the time to act. Our environmental issues have not gone away because of COVID, rather, they have escalated because of the mountain of rubbish we’ve created,” Ms Kiernan said. All registered volunteers for Clean Up Australia Day can join the Citizen Science project. Registration means participants are covered by Clean Up Australia’s public liability insurance and all community and school groups receive free gloves and bags (businesses are asked to pay a small fee to cover costs). Australians can register now at cleanup.org.au to be involved on Sunday 6 March. Participants will be provided with online access to record the number of masks they collect on a national database. WESTBROOK PARK CLEAN UP Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots Australia Queensland team has organised a clean-up at Westbrook Park (on Progress Avenue) for Clean Up Australia Day, Sunday March 6. It will be on from 8am to 10am. Bring your own hat, sunscreen, water bottle, gloves and snack. Limited gloves may be provided. For more information, text 0425 309 358.

John’s a man on a mission

Wyreeema resident John Andrew has been a supporter of the Australian Red Cross Blood Service for as long as he can remember, and at 92 years of age, he’s still waving the flag on behalf of the organisation. Mr Andrew was a constant visitor to what used to be known as the “blood bank” when he was younger. Since he became too old to give blood he has not lost his enthusiasm for the work of the Red Cross Blood Service. He bought his current car in 2014 and soon had it covered in messages urging people to become reguklar blood donors. Slogans such as “Girls, Marry a Blood Donor. He is here for Life” and “Men. Donate blood and outlive your wife” have attracted attention as he drives John Andrew’s car carries a clear message for girls who want a partner for life. around the Wyreema and Cambooya districts. To give blood, you need to be aged between 18 and 70 years Mr Andrew’s biggest concern is the fact that men are very and weigh more than 50 kilograms. hesitant when it comes to giving blood. You also need to be healthy and not suffering from a cold, He said more women give blood than do men and he would flu, any symptoms of Covid, or any other illness at the time of like to see that change. making your donation.

Equestrian centre opens in Hodgson Vale

ABOVE: Big machinery was needed to haul into place these huge logs, which needed to be tied down and bolted into place to meet regulations. BELOW: Another type of jump which has been installed on the course. The bolts can be seen at the front.

Not a bad place to have a drink. Continued from page 1 Local kids were brought in over the school holidays to help with painting. Although the property has gone a long way since the beginning of the work, there are plans for a second stage of it to be built down the track. Mrs Williams said that once the centre has been up and running for a while, she hopes to use the revenue that has come in to extend the course from its current length of 1900m to 2600m. There are about 25 acres left to be cleared which will be used to extend the course. Apart from the equestrian facility itself, the building which formerly housed RM’s Polo Bar & Bistro will be up and running as a bar with food, with the area just outside the back door providing a great view of the course. Nearer to Hodgson Vale Road, there is also a large area set aside for horses and camping.

There are plenty of events scheduled already, with the first, a clinic, being held this weekend (February 19/20). On the weekend of 12/13 March, there will be show jumping and dressage on the Saturday and express eventing on the Sunday. There are also plans to hold a Masters event in September. Mrs Williams said RM’s Equestrian Centre is open to people at all levels and there has already been interest shown by everyone from kids to mothers who used to ride but have not been on the saddle for 20 years. She said they are also looking for volunteers to become involved and help out by sitting on jumps or helping to set up. For more information, email rmequestriancentre@ gmail.com

WYREEMA STATE SCHOOL

The Preps have had a wonderful first week at school and they are all settling into our school routines and expectations. This week we have read stories and discussed their favourite character. We have introduced the letters s, a, t and the sound that these letters make.

Thursday, February 17, 2022

We have been counting to and from 10 and working on our number formation. We have started learning about living things and what they need to survive. We have also discussed the members of our families. It has been wonderful to see the Preps beginning to form friendships with their peers.
