HOUSING CRISIS

To the Editor,

Over the last several years there have been numerous discussions and reports about land availability in Toowoomba.

Recently we saw that Toowoomba may expect more immigrants within our region.

Toowoomba has been and always will be a welcoming city for anyone that chooses to live here. The issue is capacity.

Any discussions to anyone coming to live in Toowoomba will very quickly realise the significant and disastrous situation of rentals and suitable land for housing.

To deny that Toowoomba is not in a serious predicament would be foolish at best, ignorant and misguided at worst.

There are simply no rentals left available in Toowoomba.

And the current solution of simply removing the “governmental red tape” and to blame developers for slowing the industry down is misguided and contemptuous.

Big businesses are leaving Toowoomba for better opportunities and millions if not billions will be lost in revenue to Toowoomba.

Governments (all levels) are expected to represent us - and they couldn’t mismanage this any worse if they tried.

Queensland Police Mobile Beats expand

The Queensland Government has announced that it will double the

deliver better police services to all communities.

Minister for Police, Mark Ryan and Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll have revealed that the Mobile Police Beats will be deployed across police regions from the Gold Coast to Darling Downs, to Capricornia and the Far North.

There will be 25 new solar powered Mobile Police Beats joining the Queensland Police Service (QPS) fleet by 2027, taking the QPS’ Mobile Police Beat capabilities to 50 by that year.

Mr Ryan said that more investment in Mobile Police Beats meant the QPS would be better equipped to respond to local needs now and into the future, making local police are more agile and accessible to the community.

“Mobile Police Beats are the way of the future, delivering a highly visible and highly mobile policing presence,” he said.

“We are already seeing great outcomes and great feedback from the community that have access to these resources with local police being more accessible and responsive to what the local area needs.

“This new investment will provide further resources to allow our police service to be more modern and response as the community grows.”

The rollout will see Mobile Police Beats take different shapes and sizes, ensuring the mobile police stations are best placed to respond to varied scenarios.

Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll said the new resources would allow local police to better respond to the needs of the communities they served.

“Essentially these vehicles are a police station on wheels, with the ability to service the community in the same ways from taking statements, reporting crimes and allowing the public to seek advice from local police,” Commissioner Carroll said.

“These new mobile beats will be deployed strategically across the state giving our local police more flexibility to respond to what their communities need.

“As these new assets roll out, the community should expect to see more Mobile Police Beats in their areas and I encourage them to stop by and have a chat to their local police.”

The new Mobile Police Beats in Queensland will have varying configurations.

Bunker’s Hill State School

Last Wednesday, 55 students from Bunker’s Hill State School competed in a “Team Gym” competition against three other schools in a new gymnastics pilot program.

Team Gym is a cross between gymnastics, cheer and dance; and incorporates acrobatic balances and supports.

The event this year was run by Gymnastics Queensland

with the support of the Department of Education.

Mrs Chin implemented this initiative at Bunker’s Hill State School and Drayton State School.

Bunker’s Hill State School had five teams compete and all the teams finished in the top six places.

Our team “Freaks” placed first overall, “Wake me Up” fourth and “Girls”, “Tribe” and “Loco” all tied for sixth place.

All the students involved really enjoyed the experience and opportunity that Team Gym has given them.

A huge thank you to Mrs Chin for coaching and mentoring the teams.

We are very lucky to have such an amazing gymnastics coach at Bunker’s Hill State School.

“If a snake needs to be relocated from your home, leave it to the professionals and call a snake catcher,” Dr Cowling said. The species most commonly recorded in Queensland as being the cause of most snake bite presentations to hospitals are brown, black, tiger and taipan snakes, with the majority being brown snakes.

In September, 19 people were admitted to ED with snake bites while October saw 13 people admitted .

Executive Director Rural, Dr Christopher Cowling said it was important to learn early effective first-aid if you or a family member is bitten, especially if you are bush walking in remote areas

“While snakes can be encountered at any time of the year, we know more people present to our emergency departments with snakes bites during Spring and Summer, “ Dr Cowling said.

“If you do come across a snake, don’t try to touch it, or pick it up but instead back away to a safe distance.”

After a snake bite or a suspected snake bite people should •Check airway, breathing and circulation. If the patient has collapsed commence CPR immediately.

•Call 000 for an ambulance to the Emergency Department of the nearest hospital. Treat any snake bite as an emergency regardless of whether you think the snake was venomous or not.

•Don’t attempt to drive yourself to hospital or walk. Sit down and stay as still as possible.

•Apply a pressure immobilisation bandage as soon as possible. Apply a firm bandage over the bite site then cover the entire limb.

•Immobilise the limb using a splint. Any rigid object may be used as a splint eg. spade, piece of wood or tree branch or rolled up newspapers.

•Keep still and try to remain calm.

You should not wash venom off the skin, cut the bitten area, suck the venom out, or use a tourniquet.

University to research sustainability and profitability of hemp cropping in Australia

It has the potential to be one of the most sustainable and profitable cropping solutions in Australia and now the University of Southern Queensland is spearheading an innovative research bid to explore the immense production possibilities of hemp.

UniSQ is collaborating with research and industry partners nationally and internationally to investigate how hemp could be the basis for a profitable, sustainable national industry that is globally competitive into the future.

Executive Director of the University’s Institute for Life Sciences and the Environment, Professor Gavin Ash is leading the bid to form a Cooperative Research Centre for hemp - the Hemp CRC.

“Our bid is for a decade of funding which could result in the biggest single investment in hemp in the southern hemisphere,” Professor Ash said.

“It’s an incredibly bold vision that the research and industry consortium have for this CRC, but it’s one that’s worth very deep consideration and could offer a vast array of benefits to the growth of a number of core industry sectors in Australia and as a result boost our national economy.

“There’s been a long held view around hemp in our society and it’s time to advance how the industry is understood and take advantage of what it has to offer.”

Professor Kerryn Phelps AM has been announced as the

Chair Elect for the Hemp CRC bid.

Prof. Phelps has a background as a politician, medical practitioner, author and journalist.

“I am incredibly excited by the potential of this emerging industry and the active collaboration of our industry partners in the bid development,” she said.

Prof. Ashe said hemp was an attractive crop option for Australian farmers as it grows fast, is drought- tolerant, and sequesters carbon.

“It’s a high value crop that allows farmers to diversify their farming systems and also build soil health through crop rotation,” he said.

“This focus is about building an industry that has a sustainable supply chain and sustainable outcomes from supporting the industrial uses hemp lends itself to, through it’s known health benefits.

“Ultimately, hemp is a crop of tomorrow and here in Australia we have the land, resources, supportive legislation and expertise that all combine to offer our country a sustainable, profitable and globally competitive industry that is data driven and based in good science.”

INTERESTING CLAIMS

1. Hemp can be used in medicine, food, construction materials and clothing.

2. Hemp is the ultimate crop where the whole plant can be used - from seed to flower to leaf and stem.

3. Hemp has the potential to be one of the top ten crops in Australia.

4. Hemp is an alternative crop to forestry as a means of carbon sequestration - it will tie up as much carbon as a ten years old pine forest but in only 120 days.

Hemp can be grown in traditional rotations with other crops everywhere from Tasmania to the Northern Territory and across from Queensland to Western Australia.

Aviation Safety seminar

Flying safely in and around non-controlled aerodromes is the focus of a pilot safety seminar by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) in Toowoomba next week.

Most Australian aerodromes are in non-controlled airspace and Australian Transport Safety Bureau statistics show there have been more than 60 incidents, including mid-air and ground collisions, in or around non-controlled aerodromes in recent years.

CASA’s aviation safety advisors host free seminars for pilots at locations around Australia year-round to encourage pilots of all experience levels to refresh their knowledge and improve their safety.

Next week’s seminar in Toowoomba will give pilots practical tips about flying efficiently and safely at noncontrolled aerodromes and discovering the CASA resources available to support them.

Police seek local help

Police are seeking public assistance from people south of Toowoomba in relation to a serious single vehicle traffic crash in Toowoomba on Friday afternoon (November 11).

At around 2.15pm a white 2007 Toyota Hiace van with Queensland registration 916DG5 was travelling north on Ruthven Street in Kearneys Spring when it left the roadway and struck a tree.

Police believe prior to the crash the Toyota was south of Toowoomba and had been travelling north via Ruthven Street.

The Toyota has roof racks with solar panels on top, a silver nudge bar on the front and the rear window has been fitted with a white covering.

The driver, a 34-years-old Holland Park woman sustained minor injuries and was transported to Toowoomba Hospital.

The sole passenger of the vehicle, a 64-years-old Nimbin man sustained serious injuries and was also transported to the Toowoomba Hospital for treatment.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has dash cam or CCTV footage which may assist police, including the vehicle’s movements in the time leading up to the crash (especially between 1.30pm and 2.15pm) is asked to contact police.

Anyone with information should contact Policelink at www. police.qld.gov.au/reporting or call 131 444.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.

Olive McMahon’s philanthropy helps rural Queenslanders survive cancer

After receiving her breast cancer diagnosis in 1969, Olive McMahon was faced with the harsh reality of what it is like to have cancer and growing up in rural Queensland allowed her to reflect on the difficulties faced by cancer patients living in those communities.

It was this diagnosis that led Olive to become a volunteer with Cancer Council Queensland, where she used her experience of overcoming breast cancer to help others going through a similar journey.

Olive’s nephew, Gary Donaldson reflects on his aunt’s passion: “It was as though a fire was ignited within her.”

“She was so determined to give back to Cancer Council Queensland that she volunteered for many years in her later adult life.”

Olive’s generosity did not end there.

In preparing her will, Olive entrusted over $1 million from her estate to Cancer Council Queensland as an acknowledgement and thank you for the role the organisation and staff had made in improving her lived cancer experience.

Olive’s family used her bequest to establish Olive McMahon Lodge, an accommodation facility in Toowoomba for cancer patients from rural Queensland.

“The concept of helping rural families impacted by cancer really resonated with my family and we knew this is what Olive would have wanted,” Mr Donaldson said.

“Between its opening in 2011 and 2021, the Olive McMahon Lodge has supported 3,400 patients with more than 25,000 nights of accommodation at no cost,” Cancer Council Queensland Support Manager, Alyce Morris said.

Olive and her family have made a lasting contribution to the Toowoomba community and south west Queenslanders living with cancer.

State School Greenmount Greenmount

STRADBROKE ISLAND ADVENTURE

What an amazing time we had on Straddie Camp 2022.

From the get go we knew we were all in for a camp to remember.

We all had a turn at ‘driving’ the barge from the Captain’s chair and letting Minjerribah know we were on our way via the ships horn.

Our experiences were wide and varied – from a cultural and museum tour to sand boarding and kayaking.

We were privileged to see so much of the beautiful wildlife from koalas to curlews.

Amity saw us checking out the profitable fishing and at Point Lookout we were all in awe of the wonders of Australian beaches, native flora and all of the wild of the oceans.

Dolphins, sharks, turtles and squid all took turns waving a fin to the Greenmount crew.

We all loved the boogie boarding and felt a real sense of achievement after our hike to Brown Lake.

We were resilient, strong and proud Greenmount-ers.

We took opportunities to work in teams, to learn from each other and to value each other for our own individuality.

It was fabulous to hear from so many of the locals and tourists that we have a school of well-mannered and wellbehaved children (something we are very proud of).

Cambooya State School

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

Remembrance Day 2022 was commemorated at Cambooya State School with a variety of activities.

Some of these included, Year 6 students selling a variety of items for the RSL, students making poppies and hanging them in their classrooms and around the school, along with many other tasks and fun projects.

On Friday we had a short parade prior to the one

Taking our 3 to 6 class meant we saw so many of our students across the years take on leadership opportunities and support each other.

We loved watching them be proud of each other in their successes and in turn support each other when things were challenging.

Special mention to Mr Barnes for driving and for hanging out with us for the week and to our hard working and dedicated P&C who contributed almost 50 per cent of the cost to ensure our week was an amazing experience.

We can’t wait to do it all again!
