Westbrook has its say
With the Federal Election on the horizon, Westbrook was the battleground last Thursday night as arguably the four strongest candidates for the Division of Groom met with locals to discuss important issues.
Sitting member Garth Hamilton from the Liberal National Party, Labor’s Gen Allpass and independents Suzie Holt and Kirstie Smolenski attended the Meet the Candidates event. Despite the miserable weather, quite a few locals ventured to Westbrook Hall to hear what the candidates had to say and have their questions answered. The event was organsied by Westbrook local Matt Norton, who said it was important to have the candidates come out to a place like Westbrook, that is so often forgotten. Mr Norton was involved with the Westbrook Focus Group before it folded and belongs to Westbrook Lions Club and moderates the ‘Westbrook Locals’ Facebook group. Letters To the Editor THE GREAT WET To the Editor, Time hence, what the Darling Downs is going through in May 2022, might be known as ‘The Great Wet’. If the current rain event, that started in the first week of this month and then persisted for weeks, had occurred during drought-times we’d all be ecstatic – “...oh what a joy to have steady soaking rain after so long with so little”. But on this occasion the ‘steady soaking rain’ is causing more flooding accompanied by wrecked roads, massive soil erosion and crop losses, not to mention the risks to life and limb. This year’s run of flood events started back in November 2021. Since then local creeks have flooded following relatively small falls – due of course to the fact that the soil profile is saturated and surface storages are already full. From childhood we were taught “...never complain about the rain”. But clearly it is possible to have too much of a good thing. All we can do is fall back on the positives: the full profile of soil moisture is doing wonders for all the trees, the grass and the wildlife and hopefully for the crops yet to be planted. Trading as DJL Building Group Darling Downs Health believes the best way to avoid getting sick is to talk to your GP about receiving a flu vaccination. For the year to date, 1 January to 8 May 2022, there have been 39 laboratory confirmed cases of influenza in the Darling Downs Health region. Director of Public Health and Community Medicine at Darling Downs Health Dr Liam Flynn said this is slightly increased in comparison to previous years, which is why it is important to get the flu vaccine. “Now is a great time to protect yourself and your loved ones, so you’re immunised before the flu season arrives,” Dr Flynn said. “Flu season in Queensland typically peaks in August, so I’d encourage all members of our community to visit their GP or pharmacist and get the influenza jab soon. “The flu hasn’t gone away, and we still face the possibility of a serious flu season this year.” Influenza is a very contagious, viral infection that can affect the upper airways and lungs. In addition to receiving the vaccination, there are also some simple steps that can be taken to help fight the flu. These include washing your hands, covering your coughs and sneezes, and staying home if you’re sick. Some members of the community are more at risk from influenza and its complications, therefore are eligible to receive

The Bull Ride scheduled for Friday 20th May at the Allora Showgrounds has been cancelled. BUDDY BUNCH Emu Creek has welcomed the addition of a Buddy Bench in the playground. A Buddy Bench is a welcoming space to help foster friendships in the playground area. It is a great initiative for students who are feeling shy, lonely or unsure of how to ask others to play. Any student who feels alone or in need of a friend can sit on the bench, and other students will meet them and invite them to play. This helps all of our students feel welcomed and included every day. Our Buddy Bench has been donated by Drayton Medical Centre which has also supported other schools in the region including Drayton State School and Clontarf Academy at Harristown High. On behalf of the students at Emu Creek, thank you Drayton Medical Centre for making Emu Creek a great place to grow.
