A grand day out
The Bush Chooks & Roosters Community Cook Up event at Bracknell Lodge on Saturday August 28 promises to be day filled with fun, between markets, live music and plenty of food, all to raise funds for a good cause. Funds raised from the event will go to Tony’s Community Kitchen, a charity based in Toowoomba that provides meals, a shower and laundry facilities year-round for the homeless. Mrs Rebecca Knudsen, owner of Bracknell Lodge, said she was inspired to run the event after seeing and hearing about the ongoing serious housing shortage. “I wanted to help get families off the street,” Mrs Knudsen said. “I thought we could get some funds together to purchase caravans, putting people out of cars and parks. Mrs Knudsen said as a parent, children living in parks was especially horrifying for her. Helping out Tony’s Community Kitchen is important to Mrs Knudsen as it is a charity she has supported for many years, by providing them with meals and personal care items. Westbrook the place to plant
As part of National Tree Day activities, Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) is inviting residents to help plant trees at Westbrook Park, Centenary Park and Mount Peel Bushland Park on Saturday, September 4th. TRC Parks and Recreation Services portfolio leader Cr Tim McMahon (pictured) said council would plant more than 2500 native trees, shrubs and grasses at the three venues. “The species that will be planted are predominantly endemic to the areas that have been chosen. These include eucalypts, grevilleas, melaleucas, acacias, plus other native shrubs and grasses,” Cr McMahon said. “National Tree Day is part of an initiative to increase our region’s urban forest population. “Our Region is well known as home to Australia’s Garden City of Toowoomba and planting an additional 2000 trees will enhance our established reputation.” Cr McMahon said it will be an open event for everyone in the community in which to participate and enjoy. “While we would love to see a huge turnout, local tree enthusiasts keen to participate in the day’s activities are urged to make a booking.” Participants will need to bring their own gloves, trowels and drinking water with them on the day. Enclosed shoes, a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, a broadbrimmed hat and sunscreen are also highly recommended. To register your interest, please call TRC on 131 872 or email info@tr.qld.gov.au While National Tree Day is marked officially on August 1st, TRC organises a date in early September to coincide with spring and this year’s extended Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers program, which runs for all of September. Planet Ark’s National Tree Day, which is sponsored by Toyota, is held annually to inspire communities to plant trees and protect nature.

Knowledge improving on ‘flash droughts’

The public submission period for the review of the Dairy Industry Code has been extended until 29th August. Minister for Agriculture and Northern Australia David Littleproud said the two-week extension would allow more input from dairy farmers, processors, and industry groups. “Extending the submission period will allow greater opportunity for everyone to have their say despite impacts of COVID shutdowns,” he said. Darling Downs Health is warning people to be cautious after ten human cases of Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis Virus (LCMV), a disease transmitted by mice, have been reported. LCMV can cause severe headaches and in some cases meningitis, which is an inflammation in the brain and spinal cord caused by a virus or bacteria. Viral meningitis may cause headaches, fever, stiff neck, nausea and vomiting, decreased appetite, and lethargy. Pregnant women are particularly at risk with evidence showing that the virus can affect unborn babies and may cause miscarriage. To avoid LCMV, practice good hygiene, hand washing, and cleaning. LCMV is not transmitted person to person. Previously, LCMV was not known to be a problem in Australia. A case was identified in New South Wales in March this year. Public Health Unit Senior Medical Officer Dr Liam Flynn said the recent LCMV cases coincided with an increase in rodent activity in the local area. “We have seen an increase in rodents, particularly mice, in our rural areas,” Dr Flynn said. “Human infections are usually caused by exposure to an infected animal through the unintentional ingestion or inhalation of its urine or excrement. “This includes nesting materials, urine, droppings, and saliva.” Dr Flynn said the best way to avoid getting LCMV is frequent hand washing, particularly before eating, and thorough cleaning of the areas where rodents have been. LCMV is a virus and usually improves on its own, but it is still important to see a doctor or call 13 HEALTH (13 452 584) if you are feeling unwell.
