During the current COVID pandemic, the difficulties of organising what are normally public celebrations have been highlighted across the Toowoomba Region as planning for Australia Day proceeds.

Generally, local organising committees have put plans in place but, as we put On Our Selection News to bed for this week, most of those committees were awaiting a decision by the Regional Council as to how public - if at all - the celebrations should be.

Discussions our journalists have had with members of several local Australia Day committees have revealed a frustration over the fact that Toowoomba Regional Council was not prepared to leave the decisions to be made at a local level.

By the time you read this, the Council will have come up with some decision, but, as we have to submit our pages to the printers, we are unable to give readers any idea of what may be happening locally.

Options which are being considered by the committees range from a cancellation of a local event, through to a possible “invitation only” function attended only by award winners and their immediate families, or a full-on public outdoors event.

We suggest those who want to be involved keep an eye on the TRC website or log on to our facebook page or the Our-News website, where we will endeavour to publish what is happening as soon as we know.

In Stage 1 of the development at Cambooya everything was approved by the TRC before a meeting was held.

No thought was given to the bigger blocks that were characteristic of Cambooya.

The developer had to reduce the size twice until they were city size blocks.

The Council only wanted the money.

They didn’t care how it looked.

Kind regards, Lyndell and John Cuff, Top Camp AUSTRALIAN REPUBLIC To the Editor, In 1998 I was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention held in Canberra to discuss an Australian republic, elected on the ticket of the former Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Clem Jones, who advocated for an Australian head of state directly elected by voters in a national ballot.

After the 10-day Convention – which spent little time considering a model for a republic and too much time on futile monarchy-versus-republic debates – a model sponsored by the Australian Republic Movement (ARM) emerged that proposed our head of state be chosen by a two-thirds vote of federal parliament.

It failed to secure majority support even among Convention delegates with 73 voting in favour of it, 57 voting against, and 22 abstaining. It was soon labelled “the politician’s republic” and predictably defeated at the 1999 referendum.

After two decades the ARM has released its “new” model which unfortunately echoes the rejected “politicians’ republic” by offering voters only a pool of candidates chosen for them by federal and state parliaments.

Once again it has already been dismissed in predictable attacks by constitutional monarchists with one reported as saying the ARM model gives Australians “no choice” over their head of state “as only politicians will decide on the candidates”.

The Real Republic Australia, which Clem Jones initiated and which since his 2007 death continues campaigning for a genuine directly elected head of state, wants to see as little involvement as possible by politicians in choosing our head of state.

The ARM is entitled to put forward its model, but they do not have a monopoly on ideas. In coming months the Real Republic Australia will release a discussion paper seeking feedback on our model.

In the end, no pro-republic group should expect to mandate the model put to a referendum.

That’s why we want the next federal government to hold a national plebiscite asking Australians if they want a republic and also asking them to choose from a shortlist of models.

Whatever model is chosen in that plebiscite should be the one that goes forward at a future referendum to formally change our Constitution so that we become a republic.

In that way the final model we vote on will not belong to the ARM or the Real Republic Australia, it will be the Australian people’s model.

ACCC investigating RAT cost

The rising and often exorbitant costs that some businesses are charging for increasingly rare Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) are being investigated by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) following numerous complaints.

The ACCC has written to suppliers and retailers about their

costs and retail sales prices and is considering the responses

received so far.

suppliers report wholesale prices of between $3.95 and $11.45

per test, depending on the type of test and volumes purchased.

The ACCC is now averaging close to 150 reports a day from

consumers about rising RAT prices.

The ACCC’s initial analysis shows increasing sales by

service stations and convenience stores.

These channels have now become a common source of the

pricing issues consumers have reported to the ACCC.

Two new railmotors for DownsSteam

DownsSteam Tourist Railway and Museum based at Drayton has added to its fleet by purchasing the Commissioner for Railways and CEO’s private railmotors.

DownsSteam said these historically significant railmotors were previously overhauled to be the last dedicated network Inspection Railmotors for the Commissioner for Railways, the Queensland Rail CEO and other senior managers.

After 22 years operating in this role with both QR and then Aurizon, RM2032 and RM2004 have retired from commercial service and have been purchased to join DownSteam’s fleet of heritage rollingstock.

A special steam-up was held last Saturday, giving people the first chance to see the additions.

An indigenous inmate from the Westbrook Correctional Centre volunteered to paint one of the carriages as part of his prison rehabilitation program.

Inmate “Domi” commenced painting the carriage in 2012, taking 19 weeks to complete his unique Indigenous Art Gallery on wheels.

DownsSteam has erected a large shadecloth over the carriage and installed two air conditioning units to preserve the integrity of the artwork against humidity and temperature changes.

There is also Toowoomba’s very own built and restored steam locomotive, C16 No. 106, the “Pride of Toowoomba.”

It was built at the Toowoomba Foundry - Southern Cross Works in 1914. In its service with Queensland Rail, it has steamed over 1.3 million miles all around Queensland.

A solution to illegal waste problems

A helping hand is on the way to the tune of $500,000 to assist primary producers and landholders with the cost of removing and safely disposing of hazardous waste.

The grant is part of the Keeping Queensland Clean: Illegal Dumping Grant Program.

Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon said for primary producers, cleaning up illegally dumped waste on their land is costly and draws funds and resources away from their work and other vital activities.

“We’re stepping in to help land managers cover the expense so they can get back to their important work.

“This grant program is geared towards land managers such as primary producers, natural resource management groups, nature refuge holders and special wildlife reserve managers,” Ms Scanlon said.

Grants open for Active Kids grants manufacturers

Small and medium food and beverage manufacturers in the Toowoomba Region can now apply for a grant of up to $25,000 each to save money on energy bills, improve energy efficiency and adopt new energy technologies.

The Australian Sports Foundation (ASF) has announced the latest round of the Active Kids Grants program, giving community sporting clubs the opportunity to apply for vital funding for junior members aged under 20.

The Active Kids Grants have been established with the aim of providing every child with the active childhood they deserve, by supplying them with the equipment and uniforms they need to participate in sporting activities.

Open until 5pm this coming Monday 24 January 2022, grant values are up to $10,000 and will be made to fund projects specifically targeting those under 20-years-old.

Under the latest $19.9 million round of the Energy Efficient Communities (EEC) program, the grants can be used to replace existing equipment with more energyefficient models, carry out energy audits, or improve energy monitoring and management.

“Lowering business energy emissions is an essential component of securing Australia’s carbon-neutral future,” Mr Hamilton said.

Be cautious before donating for Queensland flood victims

Australia’s charity regulator is urging people to be cautious disastrous floods in south-east Queensland.

Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commissioner Dr Gary Johns recommended donors check the ACNC Charity Register to verify that organisations claiming to support flood victims are real charities.

“Our hearts go out to everyone in south-east Queensland, many of whom have been devastated by the floods around Bundaberg, Gympie and the surrounding region,” Dr Johns said.

“We see images on the news of people who have lost everything and we want to help.

“Unfortunately, we know scammers will often try to take advantage of our goodwill and generosity following a natural disaster.

“So, it is important to quickly check the Charity Register to make sure you are giving money to a legitimate charity, rather than someone pretending to be one.

“The Register will show you information including that a charity is officially registered, the kind of work it does, where it operates, its ABN and a link to check if donations are tax deductible.

“That means you can be confident that your donation is going to a really deserving organisation doing great work.

Dr Johns said cash donations are often of most value to charities, rather than material goods, as it allows them to provide the particular type of assistance most needed.

He said many may also need extra volunteers at this time, as the pandemic is creating extra pressure on volunteer resources.

Isla topped the chart for the first time for girls.

“For my family, the death ripped a hole through the fabric of our lives and left us devastated with feelings of loss, sadness, and loneliness,” Nicholas’ mother, Linda Barton said.

“These emotions were magnified by the feelings of guilt, shame, anger, and the effects of stigma and trauma.

“From the ashes of our grief, with the support of friends and community members, we launched the Hike to Heal Scavenger Hike in conjunction with the now disbanded Westbrook Focus Group in February 2021. “ The event was a huge success gaining support from Toowoomba Regional Council, many local small businesses and the community as a whole and was able to raise significant funds to support Lifeline Darling Downs Counselling Services and allow our local community to open up and talk about suicide prevention.

The Scavenger Hike takes a walk in the park to the next level - it is a fun, interactive, family friendly event in which registered participants are provided with a list of Scavenger Clues and challenges which they have a week to finds and complete.

There are opportunities to enjoy nature and share your creative pictures and scavenger finds with the Hike to Heal community.

Hikers will be creating a lasting impact for mental health and well-being in the community as they support the remarkable work of the events charity partner, Lifeline Darling Downs.

Residents across the region are urged to rustle up a team or participate as an individual and make it an unforgettable day out.

Not a bad view at all atop Mount Peel

For those who have never undertaken the trek, a walk up the southern summit of Mount Peel provides a magnificent view of Westbrook from above, especially at sunset.

From the same summit, looking east you can see Drayton and further into Toowoomba and looking south there is farmland heading towards Wyreema.

Mount Peel also has had a northern summit that provides spectacular views, although it would be a bit of a challenge to tackle both summits in one trip.

The fairly steep gravel track means ascending the summit is not for everyone.

A pleasant bush stroll is still possible through the rest of the bushland.

Batters dominate first week of 2022 cricket MILLMERRAN vs. PITTSWORTH The first game of 2022 saw the struggling Pittsworth team travel to Millmerran to play the undefeated Millmerran squad, who were sent-in to bat by the visitors.

Millmerran’s opening duo of Daniel (118) and Ayden (29) Betts have batted well in the 2021/22 season, and started well on Sunday, building a steady partnership of 99 together before losing a wicket in the 17th over.
