Home town hero for ANZAC Day
Most ANZAC Days the Greenmount commemoration is very capably addressed by an officer from either of the Australian Defence Force establishments close to home - Oakey of Cabarlah, - but this year, the guest speaker will be someone who couldn’t be closer to her original home. The main speaker for the upcoming ANZAC service at Greenmount will be Captain Candice Priebbenow, a born and raised Greenmount local who is returning for the day to join in honouring those previously and currently serving our great country. Candice started her schooling at Emu Creek State School from Pre-school to Year 3 and then transferred to Greenmount State School for the remainder of her primary years. She moved on to Clifton State High School to complete her schooling years. In 2011 Candice was successful in joining the Australian Army and started her aviation career by first completing a degree with the Australian Defence Force Academy. She commissioned to the rank of Lieutenant after graduating from the Royal Military College Duntroon, at the end of 2013. Her flight training started in Tamworth flying the CT4 in 2014. Next was Oakey where she achieved her helicopter wings in 2015, with all the local family present for this great day. While awaiting Chinook training, she completed AS350 Squirrel training with the Navy. Finally in 2016, she was off to Fort Rucker in Alabama in the United States to undergo CH47F Chinook training. While based at Townsville Candice was promoted to the rank of Captain, and with her training she has been able to not only support defence training and operations but has also assisted the community during Cyclone Debbie, the North Queensland floods, the bushfires in Victoria and New South Wales in 2019-20 and while in Papua New Guinea she was among those who airlifted supplies and staff to vaccinate for Polio in the outer regions.
Captain Candice Priebbenow is dwarfed by one of the Chinook helicopters she flies. She has thoroughly enjoyed her work in serving the nation. In 2021 Candice deployed as the Australian contribution to the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation as a military observer in Lebanon for eight months. She now is based in Canberra working in the Defence Flight Safety Bureau. It will be wonderful to hear from Candice when she addresses the ANZAC service at the Greenmount Memorial Park, which starts at 9.45am on Monday next, 25th April.

Emu Creek State School
Last term, Emu Creek students had the opportunity to learn about people with disabilities and young carers in our school and community. Our students had a mini-experience of what life with a physical impairment, visual impairment or as a young carer could be like. Many people within our community have disabilities and we used this day to raise awareness of, and educate our students on disability and inclusivity. Did you know, some disabilities are easily seen whilst other disabilities are not so easily noticed. We also learned that people with disabilities can be really good at some things, like artists who can draw portraits with their feet because they have no arms. People with a disability can even be one of the smartest people in the world, like Dr Stephen Hawking. Some people with disabilities need special equipment or carers who can support them to do every day tasks. Emu Creek State School partnered with Young Carer Support Workers from Wellways Carer Gateway in South West Queensland to provide this unique experience. Tammy Conway and Dylan Haaijer from Wellways Carer Gateway spoke to our students about the important role of carers, especially young carers who support elderly family members or family members with disability. Wellways also generously sponsored a Subway Meal Deal for all staff and students to celebrate people with disabilities and the young carers in our community. On behalf of Emu Creek State School, again we thank Wellways for their generosity and support of our Disability Awareness and Young Carer’s Day.

The 43rd Gatton Heavy Horse Field Day will be held at the Gatton Showgrounds on the weekend of April 30th and May 1st this year. The Gatton Heavy Horse Field Day has attracted nominations from 120 horses this year which will compete across a wide range of events including ridden classes, classes in the plough ring, events which will see the heavy horses teamed with magnificently restored horse drawn vehicles and obstacle course events which showcase the strength and agility of the heavy horses. Entries have been received from some of Australia’s most highly regarded owners and breeders of heavy horses who will travel to Gatton from the Mid Coast area of New South Wales, the Scenic Rim area, the New South Wales New England region, the Fraser Coast area and from across the Darling Downs. Whilst the Field Days are mainly dedicated to the working of heavy horses, this in turn makes for the perfect show and spectacle for the general public to attend and to watch the skill of the heavy horses which played such an instrumental role in the making of Australia’s history. The classes in the main ring will be complimented across the two days with an extensive programme of classes and demonstrations outside the main ring including farrier competitions. This old age traditional skill is always of interest to many. Entertainment across the weekend will be provided by local Lockyer Valley performer Boyd Ridley who has garnered a following of fans with his easy listening performance style. Food and coffee will be available on the grounds from a number of food vans and a large number of stalls will be on site also to browse. The Gatton Heavy Horse Field Day is the longest running heavy horse event in Australia having begun in 1978 on a property in Coolana, before moving to Marburg and then to Gatton in 1992 to its current home at the Showgrounds. The event is solidly supported by the local community and as a result of sponsorship, hard working volunteers and a progressive committee the Gatton Field Days definitely look set to be an important feature on the heavy horse calendar for many years to come. Further information is available on the event’s Facebook page and website where tickets can also be purchased prior to the event. The price of tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for pensioners, seniors and students under 16, children under 5 are free and family tickets are available for $40.

RV rollover at Eton Vale
Traffic was disrupted for more than two hours on Saturday after a “gooseneck”recreational vehicle rolled on the New England Highway. The incident occurred south of the highway junction with the Cambooya Connection Road and Ramsay Road at Eton Vale. Emergency services were called to the crash scene shortly after 1pm. It appears the driver of the vehicle lost control and skidded onto the side of the highway, where the unit rolled into the table drain. The rear section of the recreational vehicle was demolished as a result of the rollover. Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics treated two occupants of the prime mover at the scene, but they did not require hospitalisation. A heavy towing unit had to be brought in to remove the prime mover and the base of the recreational vehicle from the site.

Building mouse and insect pressure highlights importance of hygiene
As seeding preparations build during this busy time of year, growers are encouraged to prioritise hygiene around seed grain and storage infrastructure. GRDC grain storage extension specialist Ben White cleaner to minimise the potential for damage that could be recommends cleaning up any spills or tailings from the seed caused by mice and insects. “Grain spills around sheds and silos at this time of year can supply a feed source for vermin and insect pests, so promptly cleaning up silo and auger hoppers, seed cleaning tailings and any grain spills eliminates a potential food source,” Mr White said. Some growers in New South Wales with significant mouse numbers last year suffered damage to stored seed. Collateral damage included mice-chewed electrical wiring on machinery, which in turn impacted preparation for seeding programs. Growers with temporary storage including grain storage bags and sheds should also be monitoring these with increasing vigilance. Mr White said that four months is typically the safe storage time limit for grain stored in bags, with longer storage periods increasing pressure from pests. Mice and birds are attracted to spilt grain. Foxes then chase the mice, leaving holes in bags where water can penetrate and damage grain. “Cleaning up, baiting, and fencing have proven to reduce problems for many growers,” Mr White said. “Prioritising out-turn of grain in short-term storage options will minimise the potential for damage to the stored grain,” he said Mr White encouraged growers to do a pre-seeding check We have WeedMaster DST available of seed and stored grain in silos, sheds and bags, looking for insect and vermin outbreaks. Lions down to Wattles in mid week clash
It was all one-way traffic at Drayton’s sports hub, the Jack Martin Memorial Centre on Wednesday evening of last week with the Wattles Warriors rolling over the Newtown Lions to the tune of 72 to 4. The match was a replay after the lighting failed the previous Saturday night just prior to the top-grade game getting underway. Wattles’ flying centre Austin Jennings underlined his recent Toowoomba Clydesdales training squad selection, crossing for six of the thirteen touchdowns the Warriors ran in against their luckless opponents. Jennings’ blistering pace had yielded five tries in a game earlier in his career, and now the 22-year-old has taken his touchdown tally to another level. Wattles raced to a 34-nil advantage by the 25 minute mark before leading 52-nil at half time. Newtown rallied a little second stanza composure to cause some minor disruption to the Warriors onslaught, and with ten minutes remaining on the ground clock trailed 60-4, having claimed a single try by hooker Jacob Lingwoodock. While his line-up was anything but tested, Warriors’ captain-coach Travis Burns was happy with the one-sided result, while feeling for the Lions who appear to have a long season ahead. Wattles second recently announced Toowoomba Clydesdale train on squad front-rower Jordan Crocker was in superb form in a very dominant team performance, centre Nick Van Der Poel and back-rower Les Hartvigsen also shining under the Jack Martin Centre lights that managed to stay illuminated for the eighty minutes. Burns filled the number 6 jersey for just 25 minutes before shunting young Under 19 star Matt Wilson into the pivot role. The coach was particularly impressed with how the youngster handled the responsibility, deservedly rewarded with a four-pointer.

Wattles centre Austin Jennings turned in an impressive performance against the Newtown Lions, running in six tries in the match at the Jack Martin Memorial Centre. Wattles’ half-back Matt Duggan played the initial forty minutes, before handing over to his classy nephew Kai Williamson-Duggan who claimed a brace of tries. A highlight of the game was the near 100 metre dash by ruthless front-rower Michael Pearson, dreadlocks trailing in the breeze, only to be halted with the try line beckoning. Wattles were certainly a class above their opponents, with coach Burns of the opinion his side was too fast all over the paddock. Wattles 72 (Austin Jennings 6, Kai Williamson-Duggan 2, Nick Van Der Poel, Mitchell Duff, Matthew Wilson, Aaron Hooper, Jackson Green tries; Matt Duggan 8, Aaron Hooper, Michael Pearson goals) defeated Newtown 4 (Jacob Lingwoodock try). After enjoying the Easter break, Wattles teams regrouped for Platz Oval training on Tuesday to begin preparation for the Warwick Cowboys clash this Sunday, 24th April, in an ANZAC commemoration program. Austin Jennings and Jordan Crocker are members of the Toowoomba Clydesdales train-on squad currently in training, with the final 19 man squad to contest the QRL Central Division 47th Battalion Carnival in Gladstone in May to be finalised on Tuesday, April 26th. - Glyn Rees

New Domestic Violence office
Minister for Police and Corrective Services and Minister for Fire and Emergency Services, Mark Ryan, joined Assistant Commissioner Mike Condon in Toowoomba last week to officially open a new facility for the specialist unit that handles domestic and family violence. The new premises for the Queensland Police Service (QPS) Darling Downs Domestic, Family Violence and Vulnerable Persons Unit (DFV&VPU) arose through a collaboration with Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES), who own the space. The premises includes office space, meeting rooms, meal and bathroom facilities, and amenities for disabled access. Assistant Commissioner Mike Condon said the new premises enabled the unit to provide a more focused approach to a critical aspect of policing.

A bit of different rugby league news, and Wattles Warriors have taken on a new venture to enhance camaraderie while recovering past history, experiences, characters and memories with the formation of the Wattles Warriors Old Boys and Supporters Club (WWOBSC) back in December. Similar groups are thriving across the nation’s rugby league community, supporting clubs and reconnecting their many volunteers. A resulting Facebook page has linked up well over 400 former Wattles players, volunteers and supporters, with many more to come, all keen to get together at regular intervals and relive the club’s colourful past. While the opportunity is there for anyone, male, female, junior or senior player/volunteer with a current or former connection with Wattles, the former combined AlloraClifton club, or separately Allora and Clifton rugby league involvement to join the Facebook page, those not connected with social media need only contact the Wattles Club, or the WWOBSC President Jason Fogarty on 0417 649 119, Secretary Glyn Rees on 0400 811 093 or email Treasurer Mrs Ronnie Adamson at radamson3@bigpond.com for membership details. A membership package has recently been released and promoted at a more than reasonable $150 per person per annum fee that includes a polo shirt, cap, stubbie holder, Wattles match and event entry and numerous other attractive membership benefits. Funds raised from membership and Old Boys and Supporters Club events are channelled to support the Wattles Rugby League Club. The WWOBSC has recently taken on the role of the weekly Friday night raffles at Allora Railway Hotel. The raffles are a long-established tradition, in their present form since August 1998, providing essential support for the Wattles Rugby League Club over those years. Old Boys or Supporters keen to help out with the raffles should contact Glyn Rees on 0400 811 093. - Glyn Rees
