Have a spooktacular night

After having to cancel last year due to COVID-19, Wyreema Community Hall’s Trick or Treat Halloween Event will be back scarier than ever on Saturday 30 October.

Running for many consecutive years before 2020, the Trick or Treat Halloween Event won the Community Event of the Year award at the 2020 and 2019 Cambooya Australia Day celebrations.

The day’s festivities will begin at the Wyreema Hall at 4.30pm when kids and parents can collect their maps and set off Trick or Treating.

Kids and parents should take their time on preparing costumes, as there will be prizes for the best dressed costumes for multiple age categories.

Judging of the costumes will start at 6.30pm sharp and parents can get dressed up too.

All children must be registered with the event and accompanied by an adult.

Afterwards, everyone is encouraged to go back to the hall for a disco party and sausage sizzle starting at 6pm.

There will also be burgers, icy poles, snow cones, chips and drinks available for purchase on the night.

Nobby Lutheran Church 80th anniversary

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Nobby is celebrating its 80th Anniversary this year with a special Service and luncheon at 10am on Sunday 31 October.

The church was officially opened on 1 June 1941 and it turned very wet as the day progressed, necessitating the cancellation of the afternoon service.

A brass plaque in the entrance foyer commemorates a Mr Conrad Ludolf Daniel Wittenburg, who had been a prominent businessman in Toowoomba before his departure for London where he died in 1938.

In his will, he bequeathed part of his estate to various protestant parishes on the Downs.

The condition was that the money had to be used for new buildings.

Hence the decision was made to amalgamate and construct a new church at Nobby which was more central.

A unique feature of the building is that it has been constructed to a very large extent using materials from the old Lutheran churches at Headington Hill and Mt Kent.

It is evident today in that the boards on the exterior walls change at window sill height.

The leadlight windows are an added feature along with the ornate pews and furnishings made of select grade softwood timber.

All that remains today at the well kept Headington Hill site

are the stumps from the church and the cemetery on Careys Road.

A bi-annual weekend gathering brings life and memories back to the site.

A memorial plaque has been placed there and one is also located at the Mt Kent site on Felton Road.

Westbrook Wyreema Rail Trail mostly popular

A Feasibility Study undertaken by Mike Halliburton Associates found that Wyreema and Westbrook residents are generally in favour of the proposed rail trail between their two towns.

If built, the rail trail will run from Obst Park in Wyreema along the disused rail line to Westbrook Park.

Two community consultation events, known as Open Houses, were held on 2nd March in Wyreema and Toowoomba.

Of the 27 people who attended the Wyreema Open House, three identified themselves as adjoining landholders.

The Feasibility Study said the landholders “had genuine queries about aspects of the rail trail and how it might impact on their farming operations,” but were not necessarily opposed to it.

Biosecurity Forum Six hectares an hour

Registrations are open for the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment 2021 National Biosecurity Forum being held virtually on 10 and 11 November.

Head of Biosecurity, Andrew Tongue said this year’s forum would focus on the future, including the national biosecurity strategy, shared responsibility and partnerships and preparedness.

“Our world class biosecurity system supports agricultural production, exports and economic activity along with ensuring the environmental and community amenity Australians enjoy,” Mr Tongue said.

“Biosecurity has underpinned the response to COVID-19, including prioritising the clearance of critical medical supplies and grocery items to meet the needs of Australians during the pandemic.

The annual National Biosecurity Forum brings key industry and government stakeholders together to discuss opportunities, issues and priorities for Australia’s biosecurity system.

The 2021 Australian Biosecurity Award winners will be announced as part of the forum.

The new DJI AGRAS T20 Spraying Drone purchased by Cambooya-based agricultural business Drone Commander can cover six hectares of land in one hour.

That is better than double the amount Drone Commander’s previous drones could cover.

Drone Commander principal Roger Woods said the T20 in DJI AGRAS T20 signifies that it has a capacity of 20 litres or kilograms.

“It is double the capacity of our other drones,” Mr Woods said.

“It has very high levels of technology.

“We can cover a much larger area in much shorter time.”

Mr Woods said Drone Commander has been given permission to use the new drone by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).

“They came and tested us on our farm at Cambooya.

“CASA granted us approval to use the DJI AGRAS T20 commercially,” he said.

Groom independent candidate forum

The non-partisan group Voices of Groom is holding a forum tonight to endorse an independent candidate for the next Federal election.

The forum, commencing at 7.30pm at Toowoomba Sports Club, will provide the opportunity for independent candidates to present their credentials to the group and seek endorsement.

Voices of Groom Chair Meredith King said the forum was aimed at uncovering an independent candidate who would truly represent the people of Groom.

“We will ask all of the potential independent candidates who’d like to present at the forum to answer five predetermined questions that we will give them beforehand, and they will have ten minutes to present their answers,” Miss King said.

“The questions have been developed from our guiding principles, the research we have been doing, and the background of the collaborative, community focus of Voices of Groom,” she said.

“Once these independent candidates have presented, Voices members will vote on which candidate they think will best represent the electorate of Groom, and we will endorse that person.”

Miss King said that any potential endorsement will not be financial.

“Our members are free to go across to the endorsed candidate’s campaign team to provide volunteer assistance but Voices of Groom will not provide any funds or access to our website,” she said.

Although all are welcome to attend, only members of Voices of Groom who were on the group’s mailing list by September 27 this year will be eligible to vote.

Assistance sought

Police are seeking assistance to find five people who were involved in criminal activity at a farm between Wyreema and Athol last week.

At approximately 4.30pm last Friday three males and two females arrived at a residence on WyreemaAthol Road where they asked for water before decamping in an easterly direction through the farm.

Located nearby was an abandoned vehicle that was stolen earlier that day from Harristown.

Hodgsonvale Community Sports Club

The Friday night function went off well with a good crowd attending and Joyclyn’s special recipe lasagna and salad went off a treat.

This week will be a German theme in line with Oktoberfest.

There will be Wust and Rosella jam for nibbles and some Bratwurst sausages and sauerkraut as part of the main meal.

There will be apple strudel and ice cream available for dessert and German beer will be available. There is a prize for the best dressed German theme male and female. The main meal will be $10, dessert will be $5, children under 12 eat for half price.

The tennis courts will be open and free to use as always.

The members’ draw this week, worth $70, was drawn by number 6 belonging to Wendy Groves who was not there so it jackpots to $90 next week.

We are still looking for someone or two persons to possibly share the role of booking officer. If you’d like to be part of the community and do a rewarding job, this could be your chance.

The weather is just right for playing tennis so if you can get a group together come along and enjoy the facilities. Members are charged $4 an hour and for non-members it is $8 an hour.

There is an extra $2 an hour charge for lights if they are used.

Deb Wilson has stepped down from the social tennis coordinator’s role for Wednesday nights. We would like to start up social tennis on Wednesday nights again so if you can spare a couple of hours on a Wednesday night each week or perhaps share with another person that would be great. This is a chance to be part of the social fabric of the Hodgson Vale area and get some fun exercise with others in the community.

BIKE SAFETY WEEK The year 4/5 and Year 4 classes participated in bike safety week.

The two-day workshop was a delightful experience for all students.

On Day One, the students learned about the important equipment and safety gear a bicycle needs in order to be road worthy.

They chanted a song about the road rules for bicycles including; “obey all signs and signals, keep left, no doubling and wear a helmet’.

This was to help them remember the rules for their test the following day.

The students spent the day practising cycling around Groom Park and adhering to the necessary road signs and signals.

Day Two required them to complete two exams.

There was a theory exam to test their understanding of bicycle equipment and road signals and a practical exam to see their newfound learning in action.

All students came away with a valuable wealth of road safety knowledge and a big smiling face.
