Ms Stansbie spent the session with the 4 to 6 students, who had all prepared an interesting fact about themselves to share with her. FOOTY COLOURS DAY Our students dressed in their footy colours on Wednesday to support their State of Origin team. Tractor destroyed by fire at Vale View
A large four-wheel-drive tractor was destroyed by fire on a property at Vale View on Monday afternoon.
Fire crews were despatched to the scene at the corner of Luck Road and the Drayton Connection Road at around 12.20pm. Two units from the Cambooya Rural Fire Brigade and a town unit from Toowoomba arrived to find the tractor well involved with fire. A Queensland Fire and Emergency Service spokesperson
WYREEMA
said firefighters donned breathing apparatus as a precaution. The farmer spotted smoke coming from the tractor and called triple-0. Garry Greer from the Cambooya Rural Brigade said it appeared that something like a rat’s nest caught alight inside the vehicle and the flames spread quickly through hydraulic hoses. Firefighters had the blaze under control within about 30 minutes of their arrival. The John Deere tractor was totally destroyed in the incident.

Youth crime a worry for locals
The current upsurge in criminal offences being committed by younger people across the region is causing concern for local residents. The spate of car theft in particular is creating problems, not simply because of the theft itself, but because of the added threat to security of residents. In one case at Cambooya recently, young offenders entered a home and stole the keys of a vehicle along with the automatic opener for a garage door. They later returned and opened the garage door before driving off in the vehicle. One local told On Our Selection News that he felt the problem was exacerbated by the tendency for punishment being handed down to be too lenient. Queensland Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll has said that the youth crime wave is a phenomenon that is sweeping across the country. Commissioner Carroll said there is a really tough group of young people who are committing about 48 per cent of the crime. Across Queensland this involves some 400 young people who the Commissioner said have been “relentlessly offending”. Queensland Opposition Leader David Crisafulli said the youth justice system in the state must change. “Our youth justice system currently sends a message to young criminals that there are no consequences for their offending,” Mr Crisafulli said. “But there must be consequences for actions. “We must have laws in this state that are fit for purpose, we must have a Youth Justice Act that enables young offenders to turn their lives around and we must also impose sentences that protect our community.” Mr Crisafulli referred to a petition launched by Redlands Mayor Karen Williams following the ten year sentence handed down to the juvenile offender whose actions resulted in the deaths of Brisbane couple Matthew Field, Kate Leadbetter and their unborn child. Close to 50,000 people have now signed the petition calling for changes to the Youth Justice Act. However Police Minister Mark Ryan claims the system is working for the vast majority of offenders. Mr Ryan said 85 per cent of offenders never return to crime. Speaking to 7 News Queensland the Commissioner referred to the difficulties young offenders face in their own lives. “In many cases the families are disadvantaged, are dysfunctional - in many cases the parents aren’t even home, and often in jail themselves,” she said.

Winter VaxBus coming to Clifton, Toowoomba
The Winter VaxBus is delivering COVID-19 and flu vaccines across the Darling Downs and West Moreton region with visits to Clifton and Toowoomba scheduled. The bus is delivering COVID-19 Pfizer vaccines for children and adults, Novavax vaccines for adults, and Influenza vaccines for everyone aged five years or older. All vaccines are provided for free, and no bookings are required. “Offering both COVID-19 and flu vaccines is an important initiative to keep our community as healthy as possible this winter,” Darling Downs and West Moreton CEO Lucille Chalmers said. The Winter VaxBus can provide COVID-19 and flu vaccines during the same visit. “To anyone seeking their COVID-19 vaccine, booster, or flu shot — we encourage you to visit the VaxBus and get vaccinated,” Ms Chalmers said. The Winter VaxBus has 27 scheduled stops, and all vaccines will be administered by the Oceana Immunisation team. The schedule has been designed with flexibility in mind to ensure maximum coverage of the community. The VaxBus will be in Clifton next Thursday, 30 June and in Toowoomba on Tuesday, 5 July. “The Winter VaxBus helps remove transportation barriers and ensure vaccines are available to all members of our community,” Ms Chalmers said. To enquire about in-home vaccinations for vulnerable people, or to confirm the exact time and location of the bus, members of the community can call 1300 117 792. While Medicare cards are not required for vaccination, participants will require a legal form of identification which can include a drivers licence or passport. Visit ddwmphn.com.au/wintervaxbus for more information.

Emu Creek State School
REDUCING OUR WASTE Emu Creek State School P&C received an Organic Waste Smart Schools grant from the Department of Environment and Science to improve understanding of organic waste and learn how to reduce organic waste. With this grant, we were able to purchase two worm farms and three wheelie bins for recycling. We have learned about waste reduction and how to recycle both organic waste and other waste products. Our students have enjoyed using their food scraps and the worm farms to create ‘worm tea’ to fertilise our vegetable garden. Thank you to both our P&C and the Department of Environment and Science. RIGHT: The plants in the vegetable garden at Emu Creek State School now can enjoy a tasty drink of ‘worm tea.’ BELOW: The grant from the Department of Environment and Science has provided the school and its students with two worm farms, teaching them about nature and sustainability.

Cambooya State School ATHLETICS CARNIVAL Recently Cambooya State School held its annual school athletics carnival. As is often the case, it was the coldest day of the year so far and presented some challenging conditions for both the students and the spectators. But despite the weather, there were some fantastic results and everyone did their best and had a great day. Congratulations to our Age Champions on the day, Harley, Alyssa, Tanner, Jack, Jahrome, KT, Will, Georgia and Peyton. One New record was set on the day. Congratulations Corben on a new discus record.

Wattles three from three across all grades
Continued from page 16 A win is vital for Wattles as they sit in the top of the A Grade table huddle that also includes Gatton, Highfields and Dalby, and while it’s all become somewhat mathematical Wattles are well in contention for a crack at the mid-season silverware on July 3rd. Wattles 26 (Austin Jennings, Mitch Bourke, Jackson Green, Mitch Duff, Dale Perkins, Tyson Stevens tries; Matt Duggan goals) defeated Oakey 10. RESERVE GRADE The Warriors Reserve Graders have all but confirmed a starting position in the mid-season Presidents Cup on July 3rd after savaging the Oakey Bears yesterday 72 - 18. The Warriors ran in thirteen tries to three in their comfortable win, having led 44 – 12 at the break. Co-Captain/coach Garth Lonergan offered accolades to his players: “A good win but we definitely didn’t play our best. Our ball control was sub-standard and the score line didn’t reflect how tough Oakey’s forwards were.” Veteran three quarter Tim Hentschel posted a polished performance and claimed a hat trick and back-rower Nick Marsh impressed in the green and gold pack. Wattles 72 (Tim Hentschel 3, Tim Duggan, Jordan Henry, Jack Rubie, Tom Morris, Dale McAntee, Eli Adamson, Darby Peardon, Alex Morris, Josh Henry, Nick Morris tries; Tom Morris 10 goals) defeated Oakey 18. UNDER 19 Wattles Under 19 finished ahead of Oakey in a tough stoush 14 – 10, to claim their second winning result of the season. The Warriors held an 8 – nil lead at the half-time break after tries by Lachlan Meacle and skipper Jamie Hamilton.
Wattles Under 19 centre Gus Hutchinson grapples with the Oakey Bears defence at Stanthorpe’s Sullivan Oval. While the Bears hit back early in the new half, it was a try under the posts by giant seventeen year old debutante forward Botrus Stievn midway through the second stanza that proved the match winner. Back-rowers Jamie Hamilton, Marley Tunstead and Reuben Sullivan along with three-quarter Gus Hutchinson were among Wattles better campaigners. Wattles 14 (Lachlan Meacle, Jamie Hamilton, Botrus Stievn tries; Gus Hutchison goal) defeated Oakey 10. THIS WEEKEND Wattles head to Toowoomba this Sunday to meet the Brothers Leprechauns at Glenholme Park. Program: 11.30am - Under 19; 1pm - Reserve Grade; 2.30pm - A Grade - Glyn Rees

Wattles Warriors emerged victorious 26 to 10 against a lowly Oakey Bears side that gave it their all on Sunday at Stanthorpe’s Sullivan Oval. The Wattles entourage ventured south to Stanthorpe for the Round 10 Toowoomba Rugby League clash with the Oakey Bears after Toowoomba Regional Council ruled Platz Oval at Clifton unsuitable for play. Sunday was a day of success with Wattles finishing with a rare trifecta, also collecting the honours in Reserve Grade 72 – 18 and 14 – 10 in Under 19. While the Warriors finished with a six to two touchdown advantage in the feature match, they made hard work of the contest where the Bears pressed their claims throughout the eighty minutes. Both sides were frustrated with basic errors, and while Wattles didn’t manage to roll out their usual attacking game their defence held out against all Oakey managed to throw at them. Wattles’ goal kicking half-back Matt Duggan, who sits fifth on the TRL top point scorer tally with a total of 70 was unusually off target, with just one goal from six attempts. When flying centre Austin Jennings scored in the opening minutes it appeared the Warriors were going to dominate, but they only managed one other first stanza try through winger Mitch Bourke to struggle to an 8 – 0 lead by half time. Two four-pointers in the initial eleven minutes of the new half by full-back Jackson Green and front-row enforcer Mitch Duff seemed to indicate the Warriors were getting into their stride leading 16 – 0, but the Bears were showing they were more than capable opposition. Oakey managed to scramble onto the scoreboard through a sideline dash by winger Leevai Sutton, but Wattles hit back soon after when seasoned back-rower Dale Perkins cantered in to score. With fifteen minutes remaining Wattles held a 24 – 4 lead, but the match was anything but the dominant encounter predicted. Oakey nailed a final try later in the second half before Warriors back-rower Tyson Stevens crossed to shut the game out in favour of those in green and gold. Captain/coach Travis Burns was pleased with the win however, “it was far from one of our better performances, we just couldn’t seem to get out of second gear.” Oakey took the fight to the Warriors and showed they are a better side than their tenth slot on the premiership ladder suggests. Young winger Warren Draper debuted for Wattles showing he has the qualities required for first grade. Consistent full-back Jackson Green and front-rower Jordan Crocker were Wattles’ shining lights. Burns has his side focused on this weekend’s clash With Brothers as they continue their march towards a MadsenRasmussen Trophy birth. Continued on page 15
