East Greenmount rollover sends man to hospital

A 33-years-old Hodgson Vale man remains in hospital after rolling a semi-trailer on Falknau Road at East Greenmount on Thursday morning.

The man was airlifted to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane aboard an RACQ LifeFlight helicopter and was in a critical condition, with head, abdominal and leg injuries.

At approximately 7.40am, emergency services were called to East Greenmount after the semi-trailer travelling south rolled over on the sharp corner of Falknau Road near the intersection with Greenmount Eton Vale Road.

There were multiple Queensland Police, Queensland Ambulance and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) crews on the scene.

After the vehicle rolled, the man was unable to exit the cabin as his legs were trapped.

YEAR 4 CAMP WARAWEE Camp was awesome! The year 4 students went to Camp Warawee and I enjoyed lots of the activities.

The first thing that I did was archery. We had really good burgers for lunch and afternoon tea was biscuits and fruit.

The “Giant Swing” was so much fun and I regret not going all the way to the top.

It feels like you are falling for ever then you swing up really high. After a roast chicken dinner with ice-cream for dessert we had some really fun night time games.

We played the Oreo Challenge and a game called “Hunter and the Hunted”. There was a camp fire and some other games with the instructors from the camp.

After a very good breakfast, we did a “Cottage Garden” activity where we learnt about herbs and vegetables.

East Greenmount rollover

The man was trapped for around an hour.

Mark Haddow from QFES said while trapped, the man was slipping in and out of consciousness and it was difficult to operate.

“It’s not much room to play with.

“We had to move some seats and things like that but we got it done,” he said.

A local farmer loaned his ute to transport the man from the crash site to the RACQ LifeFlight helicopter in a nearby paddock.

VAD passed

New laws allowing voluntary assisted dying (VAD) in Queensland were passed by parliament with a vote of 61-30.

Member for Condamine Pat Weir voted against the bill.

In his speech to parliament, Mr Weir said 64 per cent of constituents who had contacted his office opposed the bill with 34 per cent in favour.

“Given the concerns of my community, which I also share, I cannot support the bill,” Mr Weir said.

“I am aware that some will be disappointed at my decision, which was always going to be the case whichever way I voted.

“I just ask for your understanding. I value all opinions, but this is the position that I have taken.”

Mr Weir said in addition to his office collating all constituents’ opinions from when the bill was introduced and the survey conducted, he met with welfare organisations, aged-care and palliative care providers, medical practitioners, religious groups and concerned individuals.

“The objectives of the bill raised issues ranging from inadequate safeguards to unintended consequences to religious and ethical grounds,” he said.

“I come from a family with a very strong Catholic faith, both on the Weir and the Coonan sides, and I can fully understand those concerns.”

Deputy Premier Steven Miles said the government was boosting palliative care funding by $171 million over five years, taking annual investment to $250 million.

“Good palliative care starts the day a patient is diagnosed and will increase in intensity over time and as death approaches,” Mr Miles said.

“But for the very small number of people whose suffering cannot be eased, voluntary assisted dying should be available at that person’s request.”

Health Minister Yvette D’Ath said that over the next 15 months, Queensland Health would be putting in place the complex clinical and administrative arrangements for the scheme’s implementation.

“This includes establishing the Voluntary Assisted Dying Review Board, a Statewide Care Navigator Service, Statewide Pharmacy Service, support systems for access by regional and remote communities and developing training, supporting guidelines and processes,” she said.

To be eligible for voluntary assisted dying a person must: •Have an eligible condition.

•Have decision-making capacity in relation to voluntary assisted dying.

•Be acting voluntarily and without coercion.

•Be aged at least 18 years.

•Fulfil residency requirements.

The law includes a range of safeguards, including strict criteria and a staged request and assessment process, to ensure only those eligible can access the scheme.

Queensland is he fifth Australian state to legalise VAD, leaving New South Wales and all territories.

AgriFutures has two opportunities now open for female leaders who want to create impact, innovate and make a difference to rural and regional Australia: the Rural Women’s Award and the new Rural Women’s Acceleration Grant.

The AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award has seen close to 300 women develop innovative projects that are contributing to a prosperous future for rural Australia.

Seven Australian women per annum will be granted with a learning and development bursary of $7,000 to enable them to bring their idea, cause or vision to life.

Each class had a session with the officers and was able to ask questions and listen to important protective behaviour information.
