TRC assertion of enough land rejected
The pace of land sales in the Toowoomba Region is far outstripping the rate of supply and urgent Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) action is required to free up more land according to land specialist Brad Lipp. Known as “The Land Man” with Colliers Toowoomba, Mr Lipp says official land sales figures covering the years 2016 to 2021 demonstrate that land for housing is being taken up faster than it is being created. He is calling on TRC to immediately lift the release of land by increasing the Priority Infrastructure Area (P.I.A.). “Given the current abundance of infrastructure and industrial development in the Toowoomba area, much more land must be released as a matter of urgency for residential development,” Mr Lipp said. “We are already seeing supply and demand issues of land due to Council’s restrictive land allocation stance and the big losers in this situation are the hard working families who are looking to get ahead or even get a start, such as first home buyers.” Mr Lipp said the influx of owner-occupier southern state buyers will only deepen the need for more land to be made available for Australian families. Official land sales figures provided by Mr Lipp indicate that fluctuations occur as they years go by, however the number of lots sold far outstripped the new lots approved by Council. In 2016/17 TRC approved 384 new lots however 1,080 lots were sold. This disparity between land approvals and land sold ratio has skyrocketed in recent years as a result of Government First Home Owners’ Grants. An example of the demand for land is Karara Gardens Estate at Wyreema. All three stages of the project have been completed with all
Building lots on Karara Gardens at Wyreema sold quickly. 115 blocks of land sold. Mr Lipp believes an increase in the supply of land will greatly benefit Toowoomba Region families and Council alike. “Having access of affordable land has wide ranging security benefits for residents as they move through the various stages of life in the Toowoomba Region,” he said. “I would have thought this is what Council would desire in being able to nurture a bigger Toowoomba with more ratepayers. “It’s a simple fact - we need Council to free up more land in the Toowoomba Region as the current rate of supply is counterproductive to requirements.”

Nobby sports ground under review
Residents in the Nobby district are considering what the future may hold for the local recreation ground, which has fallen into disrepair during the drought years. A recent public meeting was held to discuss the future of the Recreation Ground in Nobby. The meeting, which was convened by the Nobby Cricket & Recreation Club had between 20 to 30 people in attendance. Mick Comerford, who chaired the meeting, gave an outline of the history of the ground, which was a was a multi-purpose facility with a cricket ground, tennis courts, football ground and a running track. It has been mainly used as the home ground for the Nobby Cricket team, although recent years, the team was forced to play home matches at Hodgson Vale as the Nobby ground was deemed unsafe for play. At the meeting, Mr Comerford explained to that the Nobby Cricket and Recreation Club was granted trusteeship of the ground from the State Government in 1996 when Clifton Shire Council saw no objection to the club taking control. This trusteeship enabled the Nobby Cricket and Recreation Club to apply for grants and a couple of applications were successful which enabled the building of an amenities shed The future of the Nobby Recreation Ground will depend with toilets, showers and change rooms. on the attitude of the local community. Another successful grant application enabled the installation of an underground watering system with pop-up sprinklers, A further public meeting will be held at the Nobby School however the drought intervened, and the club could never of Arts hall next Thursday, March 3, at 7pm. establish grass as access to water was never possible. Dominic Doyle, from Toowoomba Regional Council, spoke to the meeting and explained that, should the Nobby Cricket and Recreation Club hand back the grounds to the State Government, the Government would likely offer the responsibility of control to the local council. What the Toowoomba Regional Council would then do with it is uncertain. The Council works with 10 to 20 years of forward planning goals with regards to recreation areas within the Region and at this stage Nobby is not listed for any future planning initiatives. Various locals put forward ideas at the meeting, revealing a keen-ness to re-establish the tennis courts, with a couple of local tradies offering their services to assist with construction.

Feedback wanted on proposed pipeline
The Queensland Government is seeking feedback on its proposed Toowoomba to Warwick pipeline, which, if built will supply drinking water to several townships including Cambooya, Greenmount and Nobby. The proposal aims to improve Warwick’s drought resilience there are no impacts to Toowoomba’s water security. and provide water supply to our local towns while ensuring Minister for Regional Development, Manufacturing and Water Glenn Butcher said community consultation was important, in addition to technical assessments which are already underway. “I want to hear the views of the community so that, in consultation with councils, we can make the right decisions,” he said. Mr Butcher said recent rainfall should not diminish the crucial importance of this work. “It is tempting to look at current dam levels and think we don’t need to act now. “But we only need to think back to 2020 when Leslie Dam dwindled to just 4.6 per cent capacity and the projection that Warwick would run out of water by late 2020.” Mr Butcher said while the initial purpose of the pipeline proposal was to examine options to deliver drought contingency water to Warwick, the Queensland Government had listened to the calls from Toowoomba Regional Council, to include their regional communities along the pipeline route. The water proposed to be delivered through the pipeline would come from Wivenhoe Dam through Toowoomba Council’s existing water infrastructure. “The proposal has been expanded to include Cambooya, Greenmount, Nobby and Clifton; communities that we know have water security challenges as well,” he said. Although the pipeline will pass by Wyreema there is no need to connect it as Wyreema is already connected to the Toowoomba Bulk Water Supply. In late 2019, the state commenced planning for a proposed new pipeline, from Toowoomba to Warwick. In response to low supplies in dams in the Southern Downs, the Palaszczuk Government began water carting from Connolly Dam to Stanthorpe, full-time, in January 2020. Water carting was no longer needed after Storm King Dam returned to 100 per cent capacity in 2021. To learn more and to provide feedback on the project, visit beta.ee.alytics.com/t2wpipeline

Migration to Toowoomba Region booming
New data shows capital to regional migration for the Toowoomba Region has risen by 5 per cent from 2020 to 2021. The latest Regional Movers Index – a partnership between the Commonwealth Bank and the Regional Australia Institute (RAI) – analyses the quarterly and annual trends in people moving to Australia’s regions. Out of all the regional local government areas in Australia, the Toowoomba Region has the 11th highest share of migration and the fifth highest in Queensland. The Gold Coast has by far the highest share, at 11 per cent, followed by Sunshine Coast, Greater Geelong and Wollongong. Despite the 5 per cent rise overall, the 2021 December quarter was down 11 per cent compared to the 2020 December quarter. The 2021 December quarter was also down 16 per cent compared to the 2021 September quarter. In 2021, Queensland had a net migration of 20 per cent into regional areas.

$50 off power bills
There will be a $50 cut in their electricity bills, the sixth asset ownership dividend in four years in Queensland. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the latest dividend is in addition to $200 received in 2020 to help during COVID. She said the government recognised the pressure on household budgets and have responded with a sixth round of the Asset Ownership Dividend. “Queensland households will receive $50 off their power bills later this year because we own our power assets – the generators, the transmission and the distribution,” she said. “Electricity providers will automatically apply the credit, so Queenslanders don’t have to apply.”

Cambooya State School YEAR 1 STUDENTS GETTING HANDS ON The Year 1s at Cambooya State School have been enjoying being back at school with lots of hands-on activities keeping them busy and engaged. They spent last week learning about adjectives and how to use them. They created some beautiful rainbow art works and then used the knowledge of adjectives to write some beautiful descriptions of clouds and rainbows. In maths, the Year 1s have been doing lots of counting. They have been learning how to count in tens and got to use a very large collection of Matchbox cars to help them. They were able to work out how many Matchbox cars were in the collection by grouping them into tens and then counting all the tens. It sure was a big Matchbox car collection!
ABOVE & BELOW: The Year 1s learned about counting through a couple of different fun activities.
The Year 1s have been busy creating beautiful rainbows.
