New terminal at InterLink SQ

A new road and rail intermodal terminal costing $16.1 million will be built at InterLink SQ at Charlton.

Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development Steven Miles was in Toowoomba on Tuesday to announce the project.

Mr Miles said it is supported by the Queensland Government through $12.6 million in loan funding from the Queensland Jobs Fund that will support 36 construction jobs.

The proponent Interlink Minister Steven Miles Global Logistics Pty Ltd will contribute the remaining $3.5 million for the $16.1 million project.

“This $16.1million terminal will provide better facilities for firms to transfer freight between trucks and trains using highly efficient multi-modal connectivity,” Mr Miles said.

“The first phase of developing the terminal will lead to lower transport costs and flow-on economic benefits to the transport and logistics sectors throughout the region and beyond.

“InterlinkSQ will engage global shipping firm Seaway Intermodal to lease and operate the Terminal.”

Clifton hosting Christmas Markets Christmas Carnival on tomorrow night

On Friday 10 December from 5pm to 9pm, Pioneer Park in Clifton will be the place to be as it is hosting Clifton and District Progress Association’s Christmas Carnival.

It will be a festive filled fun night for the whole family, including live music, Christmas shopping, jumping castle, face painting, children’s activities, ham wheel, multi draw raffle, lions barbecue and children’s craft.

There will also be food trucks, serving a range of food including hot spuds, pizza, twisted potatoes, Dutch poffertjes (mini pancakes), coffee, pies, snow cones and soft serves.

As it is a family night, the event will not be licensed for alcohol.

Clifton and District Progress Association is looking for anyone who would like to help out to give an hour or two of their time on the night either setting up, packing down or helping throughout the night.

Greenmount Returned Soldiers Memorial Hall is hosting its Annual Christmas Twilight Markets tomorrow night (Friday) from 5pm to 9pm.

Wyreema Community Christmas Tree

In 2020, the Pittsworth Men’s Shed made Community Christmas Trees for Toowoomba Regional Council as an initiative for the communities in different towns to decorate and enjoy.

This year it is on again and in December there will be a tree at Obst Park, Wyreema.

Baubles can be collected at Obst Park during the Christmas event on 3 December.

Parking to change in Toowoomba CBD

At its November Ordinary Meeting, Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) approved the conversion of existing free, onstreet parking locations within Toowoomba City Centre to a mix of free and paid parking from July 2022.

Toowoomba Regional Council’s Infrastructure Committee portfolio lead Cr Melissa Taylor said free parking for the first 30 minutes would be introduced as part of the changes.

“Council is committed to proposals within the Toowoomba City Centre Car Parking Strategy,” Cr Taylor said.

“We’re no longer a small country town where you will always get a park in front of the shop you want to visit.

“We have a growing population which has experienced a number of changes over the past few years, including the redevelopment of Grand Central Shopping Centre.

“As such, we need to ensure our strategy meets the needs of our population, both today, and into the future.”

Cr Taylor said a key element in this strategy will be delivering Smart Parking technology to provide an improved experience for customers, with greater accessibility to parking.

“As a way of doing this, we initially changed to one-hour free parking in Ruthven and Margaret Streets in the CBD,” she said.

The feedback to date has been positive on how this has improved the regular turnover of parking spaces which has benefited surrounding businesses, customers and visitors.

“The next step is the conversion from free to paid parking which will enable high-demand parking locations within the City Centre to be managed more efficiently through pricing.”

Cr Taylor said further turnover of parking spaces will address concerns TRC has heard from the business community.

“It’s important we get the balance right in supporting our motorists wanting to park in the CBD and providing more opportunities for customers to frequent businesses,” she said.

“Paid parking is just one element of the strategy and complements the Carnival Lane and Kwong Sang Walk pedestrian thoroughfares which provide greater access throughout the CBD. “Over the next 1 to 2 years, Council plans to introduce contemporary car parking management practices that will greatly enhance the management of parking operations across the CBD and, in time, give customers access to smart parking tools to more conveniently locate and pay for their parking.”

Tony Fenner’s Dillybag Gunyah

Nestled in the township of Nobby on Sister Kenny Street, Tony Fenner has built a multi-purpose venue that is steeped in local history thanks to him using recycled and salvaged materials.

Seventeen years ago, Mr Fenner started working on the off from there. section of land which he described as an overgrown desolate As a venue, Dillybag Gunyah offers ‘Hatches, matches paddock, and is now Dillybag Gunyah. and dispatches’ or in other words, baptisms, marriages and Mr Fenner slowly worked on improving the block and in funerals.

2007 or so, some people came to him wanting to have some Over the years, Mr Fenner has added bits and pieces of local wedding photos taken at his property and the venture took history, saving some historical artefacts that otherwise may have been lost forever.

The buildings include St Johns Lutheran Church, formerly in Clifton, which was moved to Dillybag Gunyah in around 2007 by Mr Fenner.

Around the same, a carriage house from a property on the Clifton to Allora back road and an old creamery from the Wisseman property at Headington Hill were moved.

More recently, 10x2 hardwood planks from the cattle yard at Clifton Showgrounds have been used to build a shed and the old carpet playing surface from the Clifton Tennis Club have been made into a bowling green.

It is a sometimes daunting experience to speak in public and we celebrate the efforts of the students who represented our school with pride and enthusiasm.

LOCAL AREA HISTORY TREK Wednesday 3rd November - our Year 3 students participated in a Local Area History Trek where we visited Steele Rudd’s Hut and the Clifton Museum.

We are very appreciative of the museum staff as we were provided access to all areas and had a staff member for each group of three students where we could find out all sorts of amazing things about life in our area in the past.

The collection and their presentation was a source of wonder and great discussion.

AMAROO ENVIRONMENTAL CENTRE Thursday 4th November - our whole school ventured off to Amaroo Environmental Centre to further our work on sustainability and indigenous education.

Pillar box crashes expose electrical hazards

An increase in motorists crashing into green electrical pillar boxes found in Queensland’s underground power housing estates has sparked a warning from Ergon Energy.

A new road and rail intermodal terminal costing $16.1 million will be built at InterLink SQ in Charlton.

Continued from page 1 Mr Miles said the scope of works to be undertaken includes new rail infrastructure, 1.7ha of hardstand for loading and unloading operations and container storage, entrance roads connecting to council’s road network, earthworks, electrical infrastructure, and office blocks.

“Continued development of the 63-hectare terminal over the next 15 years will provide space for cold storage, warehousing, food and manufacturing facilities, container hardstand areas, including development of 39 hectares for multi-purpose industrial use.

“When the project is completed, it is expected to support the development of a further 400 hectares of industrial zoned land beyond the InterlinkSQ development.

“This land is strategically and conveniently located between the InterLinkSQ Intermodal Terminal Project site and the Warrego Highway/Toowoomba Second Range Crossing and will become a key distribution hub,” he said.

Interlink Global Logistics Pty Ltd Chairman John Dornbusch said the loan co-investment of the State Government ensures that the strategically located InterLinkSQ intermodal terminal at Charlton will be constructed to benefit producers and logistics operators and create jobs.

“The terminal will provide seamless connectivity to the Port of Brisbane via the existing Queensland Rail owned West Moreton Rail Line and will have in excess of three kilometres of frontage to the proposed Inland Rail alignment,” he said.

The proponent expects to commence construction as early as the first quarter of 2022 with construction completion in the last quarter of 2022.

Australia’s native wildlife under attack

Australia is in the grip of an unprecedented alien attack on its native wildlife and environment, with experts warning more of our unique flora and fauna is in danger of disappearing by 2050 unless urgent action is taken.

A new report, Fighting plagues and predators Australia’s path to a pest and weed-free future, highlights a looming wave of new extinctions and outlines two futures for Australia, one based on an unsustainable ‘business as usual’ approach and the other based on implementing targeted actions that will help save our unique biodiversity.

The report pegs the conservative cost of damage caused by invasive species in Australia – predominantly weeds, feral cats, rabbits and fire ants – at $390 billion over the past six decades and around $25 billion each year and growing.

Over eight in ten nationally-listed threatened species are endangered by invasive species.

More than 70 per cent of Australia’s native animals are found nowhere else on earth, so a loss to Australia is a loss to the world. Invasive species also undermine agriculture leading to increased food and fibre prices.

Launched by Australia’s national science agency CSIRO and Centre for Invasive Species Solutions (CISS), the report highlights the need for emerging biosecurity technologies to be fast tracked and for the urgent development of new techniques to prevent, eradicate and control invasive pests.

Report co-author, CSIRO scientist Dr Andy Sheppard said while many Australians were aware of the havoc caused by the recent mouse plagues in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria, they had no idea of the magnitude of the invasive species issue for Australia.

“Urgent, decisive, coordinated action is crucial to stopping the spread of invasive species and to protect our extraordinary, irreplaceable native animals and plants, and Australia has a great track record in this space,” Dr Sheppard said.

“It is the only way to stop the spread of invasive species, protect native plants and animals and preserve many of our favourite Australian outdoor pastimes.”

The single biggest vertebrate menace to native species is European rabbits, which infest two-thirds of Australia, followed by feral cats, pigs, foxes and cane toads and the report recommends Australia increase its focus on breakthrough solutions to major ferals – rodents, feral cats and pigs – within the next 30 years.

The Friday night function went off well again with a very good crowd in attendance.

This week the Christmas function will commence at 5.30pm.

Santa will be there at 6.30pm to give out presents and lollies to the children under 12 so parents/carers make sure you are good and remember to supply Santa with a present.

A bar will be operating and soft drinks etc. for the Under 18s. There will be a Profiterols and Ice cream Van operating and a face painter and balloon twister will be on hand for the kids from 5:30pm to 7.30pm.

A multi-draw raffle will be operating and any donated prizes would be appreciated. There will also be a $100.00 note raffle board.

There will be a get together today, Thursday the 25th of November at 5.30pm in the Sports Club to set up and get ready for the upcoming Christmas function so if you are able to help out please come along, any help would be appreciated.

We are still looking for someone or perhaps two persons to possibly share the role of booking officer.

Darling Downs jobseekers receive training boost

The Queensland Government is providing funding for more than 730 disadvantaged Darling Downs jobseekers into work with $70.1 million in funding for its flagship employment and training program.

Minister for Training and Skills Development Di Farmer said since 2015, more than 40,300 Queenslanders have secured a job as a direct result of Skilling Queenslanders for Work.

“We are now permanently funding Skilling Queenslanders for Work with a commitment of $320 million over four years.”

Ms Farmer said this round will see 23 community organisations across the Darling Downs share in $3.25 million of funding to train local jobseekers in everything from logistics to construction.

“We know 73 per cent of participants find work or take on further training around 12 months after exiting a Skilling Queenslanders for Work project, so this is a program that works,” the Minister said.

“In Oakey, 15 places will be available in The Busy Group’s Certificate I in Construction course, while the Pharmacy Guild of Australia will ensure Toowoomba’s COVID frontline

remains strong with a ‘Fundamentals of Community Pharmacy’ program.”

Ms Farmer said the successful organisations displayed a demonstrated commitment to supporting people in their communities to find secure work.

“The funded organisations have tailored their projects to connect local jobseekers with the employers and industries that are looking for more workers in their area,” Ms Farmer said.

“Many also support Queenslanders that face unique challenges when applying for work, including young or mature-age jobseekers, people from different cultural backgrounds or whose first language isn’t English, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, among others.

“Each project offers a range of support to prepare Queenslanders for finding a job, with assistance covering the job application process, general life skills and industry specific training up to a certificate III level available.”
