More success for Crump siblings

Cambooya para athletes Kyrna and Tomas Crump have come home from the Queensland school athletics championships in Brisbane with bags full of medals.

Kyrna had a clean-sweep of the events in which she competed, winning five golds across the 400m, 800m, 1500m, long jump and javelin events.

Tomas secured four golds in the 400m, 800m, 1500m, long jump events and a bronze in the 200m.

Their success follows a trip to South Australia for the national championships, where they both won medals and

competed in individual and team events.

Their trip to South Australia was supported by donations from the community through a raffle hosted at the Cambooya Post Office.

Without putting too much pressure on the pair, the next Paralympics, in Paris, are less than two years away.

Let’s see how far their talent and hard work can take them.

Lucrative grant to strengthen ties between Korea and local region

Toowoomba and Surat Basin Enterprise (TSBE) has secured a grant from the Australia-Korea Foundation which will allow local ag-tech and agrifood businesses to build and strengthen trade and commerce relationships with South Korea.

Korea for 15 local businesses.

“TSBE works with regional small/medium enterprises to access international opportunities through exporting,” TSBE’s General Manager – Food Leaders Australia, Justin Heaven said.

“As part of this, we have identified huge market potential in South Korea. With lucrative prospects for food and agriculture, this grant will allow us to take a delegation of 15 businesses to Korea, for an exclusive business opportunity.”

The trade mission will take place over three stages.

The first stage will focus on a market insights and trade readiness session offered by in-market specialists, aimed at providing participants with insights on consumer trends, the business landscape, requirements for export and post COVID-19 market update.

This will be followed by a virtual “meet the buyer” session prior to the trade mission, where participants will be matched to interested Korean stakeholders. TSBE will engage with government stakeholders such as TIQ and Austrade to facilitate this session.

The actual trade mission – planned tentatively at this stage for May next year and lasting around seven days – is the final stage of the process.

“This mission will enable regional Queensland exporters to utilise their established business network in commercialising their trade and commerce relationship with interested Korean

buyers,” Mr Heaven said.

“An allocation of the grant funding would be portioned towards assisting with sample freight for applicable businesses.”

The Australia-Korea Foundation is the government’s key public diplomacy program for strengthening the relationship and understanding between the two countries and their people.

The focus of the program is on cross-cultural collaborations, trade and commerce relationships, technological, scientific and education innovation, and strategic international relations.

Hodgson Vale Market

Markets to be held at the Hodgsonvale Community Sports Club this weekend are the brainchild of a local who had first thought of holding a garage sale.

Jo Sandy decided to expand on the idea and attract some stallholders to create a market to draw attention to the facilities of the Sports Club.

So this Saturday, the market will be held on the top car park at the Club from 10am to 3pm

Profits from some of the stalls will be used to support the community.

For example, money from Jo Sandy’s second hand and sweets stall will be used to buy Christmas presents for children who are in the Toowoomba Hospital over the festive season, while a stall mounted by Richo’s Gym will contribute its profits to help local boxers get to New Zealand for a Showcase event.

Jo has been able to attract ten stallholders at this stage but there is still room for any latecomers.

To book a spot, call her on 0488 290 024.

If this Saturday’s event goes well, it’s hoped to continue markets at Hodgson Vale on a regular basis.

THE OCTOBER VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH IS Tony Fenner

Nobby’s Tony Fenner has spent decades volunteering for important life-saving organisations in the local community. He has volunteered in the Nobby Rural Fire Brigade and Clifton SES Group.

He joined the SES in 1987 since then his dedicated service has seen him awarded 30 Year Meritorious Clasp and Emergency Services Medal as well as train many cadets groups.

Tony also keeps locals entertained weekly with his humorous signs along the main street in Nobby. If you’re not familiar with them, have a look out next you’re driving past.

For

Australia’s

Once again, economic conservatives find themselves standing alone against the tide of Labor’s tax and spend agenda. The Treasurer showed his true intent by trying to back out of the legislated Stage 3 tax cuts but was scared off by the strong public response. It’s only a matter of time before Labor try again to raise your taxes.

This extra money in your pocket is going to be needed. As Deputy Chair of the House Economics Committee, I was able to reveal that the average household energy bill has risen by $300 since April. This is despite Labor’s promise to lower your energy bill by $275.

Labor just can’t handle money.

With interest rates rising, petrol prices nearing record highs, and energy bills increasing, Australia is already paying more under Labor. I will continue to hold the government to account in Canberra.

Plans in place for Westbrook Halloween

Kennard Street and Maculan Crescent in the north-west of Westbrook will be closed next Monday night, 31 October to facilitate a special Halloween event.

The Westbrook Lions Club has sponsored the road one-off closures.

Organiser Matt Norton said the roads will be closed to provide additional safety to trick or treaters and build community spirit.

“This part of Westbrook is really popular with trick or treaters,” Mr Norton said.

“Lions will be giving away some food until we run out but other than that it will be Halloween as normal.”

The road will be closed from 5pm to 8pm, unless the event finishes earlier.

There is no cost and no need to RSVP or to book tickets.

Wyreema Community Hall is also hosting a Halloween event this Saturday, 31 October.

Crash at Top Camp

Tow trucks were required after a two-vehicle collision on the New England Highway at Top Camp last Thursday.

Emergency services were called to the scene at the junction of the New England Highway and Preston Boundary Road at 4.50pm.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) spokesperson said one QFES crew attended the scene and found no one entrapped in vehicles.

A spokesperson for Queensland Ambulance Service said following the incident, paramedics transported one patient to Toowoomba Hospital in a stable condition.

A second patient declined assessment.

The QFES crew made the scene safe for ten minutes while waiting for tow trucks to arrive.

Rural Aid assisting farmers reeling from floods

It seems nowhere has been safe this year when it comes to flooding, with charity Rural Aid rolling up its sleeves once again to help affected farmers in Victoria, New South Wales, and Tasmania.

Farmers in the Darling Downs have had to contend with four floods in six months from November 2021 to May 2022 while elsewhere in Queensland and northern New South Wales the damage has been widespread and devastating.

Following flooding down south in recent weeks, Rural Aid’s team of counsellors are conducting welfare checks on Rural Aid’s registered farmers.

Rural Aid CEO John Warlters said the floods were hitting particularly hard in Victoria’s north, while in NSW and Queensland, farmers with crops nearing harvest were increasingly anxious as flood water and continuing rain caused costly downgrading.

“It’s upsetting to hear stories of flooded homes, dead livestock, and flattened crops,”Mr Warlters said.

“Winter crops are approaching harvest, so to see them downgraded or destroyed so close to the finish line is a devastating blow.

“Losing livestock is truly heartbreaking for our farmers, who work so hard to keep their animals alive and healthy.

“Months of hard work and investment has now been written off, alongside people’s homes, fences, sheds and machinery.”

Rural Aid has been on the front foot responding rapidly to the unfolding situation – sharing its dedicated counselling phone line with the thousands of farmers in impacted regions and, where safe to do so, mobilising its counsellors to offer one-on-one emotional support to producers on-farm.

Rural Aid delivered hay to flood affected farmers at Buckendoon, near Lismore, last month.

Rural Aid has counsellors on the ground in Forbes, New South Wales and in northern Victoria.

The entire counselling team has been phoning farmers across the flood-impacted regions.

Registered primary producers are also being offered financial assistance as they deal with the devastating effects of the flood.

More than 70 local government areas (LGAs) across the three states are directly affected, impacting thousands of families.

The wellbeing team is the largest team within Rural Aid, reflecting the priority the charity places on addressing the mental health challenge confronting rural Australia.

Rural Aid counsellors are expecting an increase in calls to its new, dedicated 1300 175 594 counselling line, as the extent of the current flooding situation becomes more apparent.

Farmers registered with Rural Aid can access counselling support and request financial assistance and fodder for livestock.

Producers who aren’t registered are encouraged to do so immediately via ruralaid.org.au or by calling 1300 327 624.

Applications open for youth grants

Applications are open but closing soon, in fact this Monday, 31 October, for Toowoomba Regional Council’s (TRC) next round of Youth grants, with up to $2,500 available.

TRC Environment and Community Services Committee chair Cr James O’Shea said the youth grant program aims to increase young people’s engagement with their communities, targeting those in the 12 to 25 age bracket.

“Council recognises the importance of supporting our youth, which is why we’ve introduced these funds,” Cr O’Shea said.

“We already have a community grant program, but this one is specifically designed to support youth-led and youthdriven projects, whether they be in the arts, culture, sports or opportunities to be active citizens.

“By opening this program we’re hoping to be empower the young people of our Region.

“This program will provide funding and/or in-kind assistance to support youth/community organisations in their efforts to provide services, activities and events that are of benefit to the young people of our Region.”

Projects funded under the Youth grants program should demonstrate how they have involved young people at every stage of the project, from issues identification to design, delivery and review.

Organisations or groups applying for funding must have spoken with young people and involved them in the conceptual design of the project before submitting an application.

Youth Grants will not fund things such as projects already started or completed, recurrent administration and running costs, projects already funded by other TRC grant programs, prize money, trophies, raffle prizes or fundraising.

With Council’s move to SmartyGrants, the entire application process will occur online within one platform.

Anyone interested in applying is encouraged to contact Council as officers can give advice and assistance in the grant application process.

BreastScreen Toowoomba celebrates 30 years

The thirty year anniversary of the BreastScreen Toowoomba

importance of regular breast checks.

“Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer for Australian women,” Medical Director of BreastScreen Toowoomba Dr Heather Jeffrey said.

“Sadly, one in seven women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their life.”

Since opening its doors in 1992 the Toowoomba BreastScreen clinic has screened over 444,000 women.

As well as a permanent clinic, the service has a state of the art mobile breast screening van that provides services to women in remote and rural areas.

“Last year we screened nearly 15,000 women through our Toowoomba clinic located at 661 Ruthven Street and our mobile vans,” Dr Jeffrey said.

“Everyone of those breast screens is so important to ensure the best health outcomes for our local women.”

Women aged from 40 years and over are entitled to a free breast screen through the service, as this is the best way to detect breast cancer early, well before you or your doctor can see or feel any changes.

Additionally, the BreastScreen Queensland Toowoomba

service will host a special event for local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women on 1st and 2nd of November.

The two day event is aimed at creating a welcoming space to encourage more First Nations women to be breast aware.

For more information about BreastScreen Toowoomba service or to make an appointment visit breastscreen.qld.gov.au or phone 13 20 50.

A doctor’s referral is not required for this service.

TADOMS Oakey Expo postponed

The Toowoomba and District Old Machinery Society (TADOMS) 2022 Old Machinery Expo, which had been scheduled to be held at the Oakey Showgrounds this weekend, 28th and 29th October, has been postponed.

The postponement has been caused by the extended period of wet weather which has saturated the Oakey showgrounds and interrupted the time table for setting up the exhibits.

The Expo, based on the theme “Life of the Bush Contractor”, has been planned to trace the story of early pioneering machinery advancement and living conditions during the forty years from the 1920s to the 1950s.

A new date has yet to be fixed.

Hodgsonvale Community Sports Club

Our Friday night function went well with a good crowd attending and Kev and Deb’s Beef rissoles, sausages, potato bake and light salad worked a treat. The members’ draw saw number 8 come out belonging to John Mills who was there so picked up $90. So, back to $20 this week. The meal on Friday night will be Colin and Heather’s German style sausage for our Octoberfest night for $10 adults and $5 for children under 12. There will be a couple of German beers to try and perhaps a wine from that region. Our normal bar is available. There is a good variety of Crows Nest soft drinks. Also in stock is Corona Mexican beer. The tennis courts are free to use on Friday nights.

The grounds are still very wet at the moment with more rain around so please be careful when using or walking near the oval etc.

Market Day is this Saturday, 29th October at the Sports Club grounds from 10am to 3pm. There will be various stalls and a barbecue so come along and check out what is available. The markets will be in the top car park above the Sports Club. There will be no parking around the Club itself. Access will restricted to stallholders and any emergency vehicles. Please park at Lions Park or surrounding nearby streets and walk. If you want a stall, please contact Jodie on 0488 290 024.

Our Community Christmas function will be held on Friday the 25th of November this year commencing at 5.30pm.

The Sports Club is open for private functions so contact Mark our booking officer. The mobile contact is 0431 014 618 for further details, inspections and future bookings. Check out our website or send an email to hcsc8315@gmail.com Discounts apply for financial members who hire the facility.

The tennis courts are for hire. The keys are available at the Hodgson Vale shop. High chance of wet summer

All signs are indicating the region is set for a very wet summer and it is never too

With forecasts for another wet season approaching, Toowoomba Region Mayor Paul Antonio is encouraging residents and landowners to ‘Get Ready’ for any potential natural disasters.

“With above average rainfall predicted for the coming months, we’re urging residents and landowners to get themselves and their properties prepared early this year,” Mayor Antonio said.

“Our dams are already near capacity and with ground saturation levels so high throughout the Region, the risk is much greater this year.

“As flooding is a real risk again this summer, ensuring you have what you need on hand such as sandbags and supplies are essential, especially in case of flooding causing isolation of towns and/or if you have been previously impacted.

“It’s important to understand your unique risks based on where you’re located, develop an emergency plan for both yourself and your animals and to pack an emergency kit that can last you for at least three days.”

Mayor Antonio calls on residents to:

•Check and clean their roof, gutters and downpipes.

•Identify loose objects in their yard, such as outdoor furniture and toys that will have to be put away or secured if a storm approaches.

•Pack an emergency kit to set aside that includes torches, spare batteries, an emergency radio, canned food, UHT milk and bottled water.

Flooding events have had a significant impact on the Region, with Council completing emergency road works at more than 7,600 locations since November 2021.

TRC Infrastructure Committee Chair Cr Carol Taylor said Council continued to prioritise its Flood Recovery efforts, with a road recovery works program from the February and May 2022 event alone expected to be well over $100 million.

“It’s great to have the support of our community in understanding the scale of damage over the entire Council area,” Cr Taylor said.

“It’s been a massive task following multiple events for our dedicated teams to complete the works they have to date. They still have a lot more to do, especially if our roads are again impacted by more rain, or our teams are required to divert their attention away from permanent reconstruction back to emergency repairs due a new flooding event.

“Please remember, if it’s flooded – forget it.”

Hike to Heal promoting mental health wellbeing

The group behind the annual scavenger hunt at Mount Peel, Hike to Heal Australia, recently joined with other services at the Toowoomba State High Mental Health and Wellbeing Expo, part of Queensland Mental Health Awareness Week.

Participating organisations hosted activities that provided a focal point for awareness, education, and understanding of mental health and wellbeing, and helped foster community connection and inclusion.

Caryn Powell and Katrina Flint, from the Hike to Heal team, conducted a mini–Scavenger Hunt with some clues a little trickier than others.

Caryn said the students, when discussing their ways to deal with stress, rarely associated it with the benefit of fresh air, sunshine, enjoying nature and exercise.

“However, they did say talking to friends, reading a book, playing games on their phone or listening to music helped,” Ms Powell said.

Many of the students who had not been to Mount Peel Nature Reserve, were unaware of its location and were surprised there were not only hiking trails but also bike and horse tracks - a possible new destination for an outdoor outing for them and their families.

The Hike to Heal Scavenger Hike Positivity Pebbles (pebbles with wonderful messages, quotes and beautiful artwork scrawled across them) and Affirmation Cards were popular amongst students and a lovely way to brighten up their day and highlight the importance of talking about

mental health.

The aim of these tokens is to hopefully start to shed the stigma associated with mental health and provide students with a springboard for open conversation and connection.

The distribution of the Toowoomba Regional Council’s Support Finder Card will ensure students are able to connect with appropriate local support services.

The Hike to Heal Scavenger Hike is on again during the last week in February between Saturday 18th – Sunday 26th, 2023.

Schoolchildren learning about ag

This week AgForce conducted a free education event at Downlands College in Toowoomba.

Run by AgForce’s School to Industry Partnership Program, to teach students where our food and fibre comes from, the importance agriculture plays in our everyday lives and the diverse career opportunities available.

The event takes the learning out of the classroom and promotes all sectors of agriculture, including beef, sheep, grains, production horticulture, poultry and dairy.

AgForce General President Georgie Somerset said showcasing farming to children was incredibly important.

“Whether students are studying agriculture or not, it is vital that young people gain exposure to important messages about food production,” she said.

High school students are given the chance to discover the diversity of careers in modern agriculture, covering food and fibre, geography, society, environment and science.
