Greenmount ANZAC Day commemoration
ANZAC Day ceremonies at Greenmount never fail to impress and 2022 was no exception. The service attracted one of the best ever attendances with strong support from across the district stretching from Cambooya through to Nobby and east to the Great Divide. A highlight of this year’s commemoration was the guest speaker, Captain Candice Priebbenow, who is a native of the district, having been born in Toowoomba, living at Greenmount, attending Emu Creek State School as a primary student and Clifton State High for her secondary education. In addition to delivering a thought-provoking address, Capt. Priebbenow participated in the traditional Passing of the Torch to the next generation. Of the Gallipoli landing by the original Anzacs, she said, “Their contact that day has made them immortal.”

Toowoomba training for atrisk youth marks 12 months
A skills and training program for young offenders and atrisk youths has marked its first year in Toowoomba. Minister for Youth Justice Leanne Linard said the Transition to Success (T2S) program in Toowoomba was one of twenty sites across Queensland providing alternative education and vocational training to prepare young offenders and at-risk teens for work. “Toowoomba’s T2S program kicked off in May last year with a program to develop employability skills for at-risk youths,” she said. “They’re now delivering their second T2S program with a range of partners including Toowoomba PCYC, local Indigenous artists, Queensland Fire Emergency Services and Carbal Medical Services. “I thank the many hard-working staff who have supported young people these past twelve months while they found a new direction. “And I extend a warm congratulations to the young people who are participating in this year’s program.”

Letters To the Editor RESIDENTIAL LAND To the Editor, Well there goes another lost subdivision. That makes 3000 lots undeveloped in the Region. I see in today’s (22nd April) The Chronicle that the developer has pulled out of Griffith Street subdivision. That was potentially 1000 lots. I didn’t think the land supply issue could get any worse... but now it has. With this one now stalled or cancelled - that’s 1000 lots... add in the Drayton Connection Road subdivision that was scheduled for 500 lots, and the Fernleigh Estate that was 1500 lots ... that’s 3000 potential lots not made available for our region. Given the extreme pressure of land supply that’s about six years worth of land development missing out of our region. I’d say TRC may as well remove Griffith Street and Drayton Wellcamp Road from any future planning schemes as it will never be developed now... no one will touch them. I sincerely hope things get better - TRC has the complete and autonomous power to make changes. no one else. Clayton Rogers, Westbrook

Council sticking out its chest
Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) is patting itself on the back after one of its schemes to benefit local business came up trumps. A benchmarking exercise has shown Council’s continued effort to assist local business through its 14-day payment strategy is best-in-class. Council introduced a range of measures to assist local business at the height of the Covid pandemic and one such measure was to reduce its payment terms to local suppliers from 30 days end of month to 14 days date of invoice. TRC Finance and Business Strategy Committee Portfolio Leader Cr Kerry Shine said the measure had assisted local businesses involved in supplying goods and services to Council. “During the Covid pandemic, Council introduced a range of measures to assist our local businesses and suppliers and this change to our payment terms is one we’ve made permanent because we know it works,” Cr Shine said. “Council has undertaken some benchmarking on payment terms implemented by other Council areas throughout Queensland and we’ve found we are best-in-class when it comes to paying our businesses within 14 days from date of invoice. “Getting paid earlier is such an important part of running a business, we know cash flow is so important to allow
businesses to do what they do and Council is walking the walk in making payments faster for services rendered and supplies delivered. “Council has spent around $142 million this financial year already with local Toowoomba region businesses which represents almost 65 per cent of all Council spend. “Making sure these businesses are paid faster is a critical part of council’s strategy to support them, it allows these businesses to keep people employed, pay their bills and operate efficiently,” Cr Shine said. Other recent changes to Council’s Procurement Policy to support local business even further have included: • Seeking quotes from only local suppliers for procurement under $200,000 (where possible) • Giving local suppliers an additional 10% price variance for purchases up to $50,000 • Giving local suppliers an additional 5% price variance for purchases greater than $50,000 but less than $200,000 • Continuing to follow the public tender or contractual arrangement exceptions contained within Local Government Regulation 2012 (Regulation) s223 to s235 for procurement with an expected value greater than $200,000.

Region is now drought-free The Toowoomba Region is among local government areas in Queensland to be declared free of drought.
Significant rainfall since October 2021 means 11 South East Queensland areas are no longer in drought, with the state’s drought declared area dropping from 64.7 to 61.1per cent. Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries and Minister for Rural Communities Mark Furner said Local Drought Committees (LDCs) had assessed the response to the rain and flooding events and noted a big improvement in conditions across the state’s south east. “While we acknowledge that some producers have suffered significant damage from the severe rain and flood events, the positive is that natural water courses and stock and irrigation water storages have been replenished, along with excellent pasture growth that will see us through to the next wet season,” Mr Furner said. The drought status of these LGAs is also being revoked: Bundaberg Regional Council Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council Fraser Coast Regional Council Gympie Regional Council Ipswich City Council Lockyer Valley Regional Council Scenic Rim Regional Council Somerset Regional Council South Burnett Regional Council Southern Downs Regional Council.
The Minister said individual properties could still be considered for drought assistance. “If a producer is experiencing difficult conditions in an area that is not drought declared, then they could apply for an Individually Droughted Property (IDP) declaration,” he said. “This gives them the same access to our drought assistance as an area declaration.” The Minister said LDCs used a range of information and technologies when reviewing drought conditions. “This includes the Australian Combined Drought Indicator (CDI), which was developed by the Northern Australia Climate Program with funding from University of Southern Queensland, the Queensland Government’s Drought and Climate Adaptation Program and Meat and Livestock Australia,” he said. “Primary producers in the drought-revoked areas can now access freight subsidies for restocking and returning from agistment under the old Drought Relief Assistance Scheme (DRAS). “Other Queensland’s LDCs will meet towards the end of this month to assess seasonal conditions in other drought declared parts of the state. “Droughts and floods are part of our climate cycle and now is the time to start preparing for future droughts.” New drought assistance programs include: • Co-funding training with the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund to help producers prepare Farm Business Management Plans. • Drought Preparedness Grants and loans of up to $250,000 available through the Queensland Rural and Industry Development Authority (QRIDA). • Drought Ready and Recovery Finance loans of up to $250,000 which can be used for drought recovery activities such as restocking and replanting Mr Furner said Drought Relief Assistance Scheme is being phased out (DRAS), as producers access the new programs. The drought declaration map can be viewed at longpaddock. qld.gov.au and the prototype drought monitor can be viewed at nacp.org.au/drought_monitor

Plans for next step to Ambulance ramping keep Nobby Rec Reserve a problem at Toowoomba Hospital
The State Opposition says new figures have revealed that Queensland has the worst rates of ambulance ramping in Australia, and the Darling Downs region is suffering as a result. New data obtained by the LNP Opposition shows that more than one in four patients in the Darling Downs are being left on stretchers, corridors and hallways at the Toowoomba Hospital for longer than thirty minutes. The 27 per cent figure is an increase of 4 per cent from November 2021. Leader of the Opposition David Crisafulli said the State Government urgently needed to find a plan to fix Queensland’s hospitals. “These new figures are deeply concerning,” Mr Crisafulli said. “Queenslanders have seen the images of ambos and police queued up at hospitals and heard the stories from patients being forced to wait hours for care. “Now we know the problem isn’t getting better and the State Government has no coherent plan to fix it. “We’ve repeatedly put our solutions on the table, including real-time data monitoring, better resources for triaging, more beds and more funding on the front line. “Lives are on the line here. “The State Government must start listening to Queenslanders and take some real action.” Shadow Minister for Health Ros Bates said Queensland’s hard working health staff need more support. “As a registered nurse and former hospital administrator, I know how stressful it can be for our front line staff,” Ms Bates said. “These dedicated Queenslanders are doing all they can to hold together a system in crisis. “Not only does the Palaszczuk Labor Government have no coherent plan to fix ambulance ramping, these new numbers show the problem is growing. “The Health Minister must start taking real action now. “The Palaszczuk Labor Government must start listening or more Queenslanders are going to die waiting for an ambulance. “That is the sad reality they are ignoring.” The figures obtained by the LNP Opposition came to light after the Shadow Minister for Health asked the Minister, Yvette D’Ath, a Question on Notice.

After managing to attract a good turnout for a working bee held at the Nobby Recreation and Cricket Grounds a few weeks earlier, interested members of the Nobby community met to start planning the way ahead. The meeting decided to start with another gathering in June in order to elect a committee to steer the project. The meeting will be held on Sunday June 19 and will be followed by a family fun day. It will be a casual affair with people bringing along their activity equipment such as bats and balls, along with chairs to make themselves comfortable. Those attending last week’s meeting agreed that the support for the working bee by members of the community as well as those who donated equipment and the food had been most appreciated. That event was also appreciated by the local kids, who had a great time spreading their wings on the recreation grounds. At the meeting last week, people had different wants from the space, walking, running, making and flying kites, walking dogs, market space, festival or event space, tennis courts, seating for a quiet moments, kicking the a ball around but mostly a space for families to be together playing cricket or footy. It’s hoped the next meeting will be well supported.

Greenmount State School
GREENMOUNT REMEMBERS Its not every day your school and its ANZAC Day service is blessed with a helicopter fly and loop over from its very dearest 102 years old war veteran and friend of the school, but amazingly Mr Joffre Bell managed it all for Greenmount State School on Friday 22nd April. Waving excitedly and very tearily from the ground were students, staff, parents and friends. It was a once in a lifetime surprise and something we will all never forget. We could see Mr Bell clearly as the pilot tilted the chopper so we could all exchange waves before they headed off on their way to TSS (The Southport School). Joffre has been a very special part of our service and the learning opportunities afterwards and we will be forever grateful for his service, sacrifice and time spent with us. Our school was privileged to also pay tribute to Mr Les Wilson, another endeared member of our ANZAC community who we sadly lost late last year. It was lovely that Mrs Ferguson represented their family in attendance with us and allowed our students to share stories with her.

100 per cent clearance at auction sale
In a rare occurrence, there was a total clearance of lots on offer at an auction held on a rural property at Nobby on Saturday. The auction was held on Lyster and Sue Rickert’s property, “Belmont”, which is at 365 Rickert Road at Nobby. There was a total of more than 400 lots offered to buyers and the whole offering was cleared. A spokesperson for the selling agents, Webster Cavanagh, said there were 180 registered bidders at the sale. There was also a good crowd in attendance to watch the proceedings. According to regular auction-goers, the prices paid were good, which would no doubt ensure that Lister and Sue Rickert were happy people at the end of the day. The sale of Belmont brings about the end of an era in the Nobby district, the property having been in the hands of the Rickert family for many years.
The auction sale produced a good result for vendors Sue and Lyster Rickert.

Cambooya State School
Cambooya State School ANZAC Day was commemorated on the 22nd of April this year at the Cambooya Memorial Park in Eton Street. ANZAC Day is the day we remember all those who have served and died in wars, conflicts and, peacekeeping operations. During the week leading up to our ANZAC service, students learnt about the story behind ANZAC Day and the construction of wreaths to be laid at the memorial during the service. The service was held at 9.30 with students, parents, staff, returned service members, members of the Clifton RSL and members of the community attending. Mr Burgess from the Clifton RSL was the special guest speaker. He reminded all those present of the importance of continuing to celebrate ANZAC Day and explained that ANZAC is not a place or person but a concept to acknowledge the sacrifice of our service people. Representatives of the RSL laid wreaths along with the our school leaders, classes and members of the community. Throughout the day our students also spent time with returned serviceman, Mr Jason Hurst who spoke with our students on his experiences while in the Australian Army. Well done to everyone who planned, prepared and participated in the school ANZAC Day service for 2022.

Wattles beat Cowboys in local derby
A massive crowd filled Platz Oval last Sunday to see the Wattles Warriors first graders overwhelm arch rivals the Warwick Cowboys 30 to 22 and gusty weather conditions.
