Wyreema medical centre in the works Residents of Wyreema may no longer have to travel out of town to visit a doctor or dentist.

A development application has been submitted to Toowoomba Regional Council to construct a dental and medical practice on the corner of Newman Road and Balfour Street (Toowoomba Karara Road).

Dr Jaideep Singh has applied for a Material Change of Use on the 820m2 site at 1 Newman Road, Wyreema, with the proposed development covering 250.6m2.

The planning report, prepared by Creative Planning Pty Ltd, states that between the dental and medical surgeries there

will be six full time equivalent employees and the proposed days and hours of operation are Monday to Friday 7am to 6pm.

There is an estimation that there will be 300 visitors per month, although it is noted that it is too soon to give specifics.

The planning report made an argument as to why the medical facility would benefit the community.

“There is no central business district in Wyreema and no dentists or doctors’ surgeries,” the report said.

Draft plans show the medical practice having three consultation rooms and a treatment room and the dental surgery having four surgery rooms.

The car park has eleven spots for cars, including one disabled, and two for motorbikes.

Entry and exit to the car park for the facility will be via LTD.Balfour Street.

Revitalising Preston’s Gorman’s Gap Track

A team of local volunteers has banded together to restore an historic site that has been overrun by weeds.

President Barbara Lindbergs said Friends of Gormans Gap (FOGG) Inc. was formed to bring together like-minded community members of Gormans Gap and surrounds.

“FOGG members were concerned about the degradation and weed infestation of the historic Gorman’s Gap Track and formed a working party to address the issue,” she said.

She said she was “very much” surprised to see Roy win.

“It took two stewards to convince him he had won,” Ms Barsby said.

“You just have to be so determined to do it.

“It proves you can do anything.”

Still young at 37 years of age, Ms Barsby said she will probably compete again in the Tom Quilty when it is in Queensland in a few years’ time.

It was a special moment for Jo to be able participate in the competition alongside her father, a feat she thinks was probably unmatched this year.

Like Roy, she has been an endurance rider since childhood, beginning in the sport at age 10 and competing in her first Tom Quilty at age 15.

Father and daughter pair Roy and Jo Barsby with the Tom Quilty Gold Cup. Mr Barsby said he could not have done it without the valiant performance of Dumaresq Suleiman, who was destined to have his head chopped off when he bought was as a colt.

Since then he has sired a few horses and has proved to be more than capable at endurance riding as a gelding.

Mrs Barsby owns a few horses on his property on Rosenberger Road where he has lived for two years.

He previously had lived in Warwick for some years and in Dubbo.

Roy was not the only Barsby competing, with his daughter Jo also in the saddle, finishing 14th in the middleweight division with a time of 12 hours and 51 minutes.

Roy was proud that Jo rode Dumaresq Vaquero, a horse Roy had bred himself.

“To be able to do it with horses he bred is quite special,” Jo Barsby said.

Ms Barsby said the experience, her third Tom Quilty, was very tough, yet amazing.

“It was some of the coldest temperatures I’ve experienced,” she said.

Roy and Jo, accompanied by Roy’s other daughter and her husband, would wake up to everything being covered in ice.

NAIDOC WEEK Buddy from Winangali Infusion brought his team to our school and ran an exciting day (pictured right).

Students participated in a smoking ceremony, learned traditional dances, songs, created art with ochre and traditional First Nations symbols and learned names of animals and plants in Gamilaraay language.

All of the students thoroughly enjoyed these activities and it was a wonderful way for our school to celebrate NAIDOC Week and First Nations culture.

Wyreema Hall trivia

The Wyreema Community Hall held its second annual Trivia Night last Friday.

The night was highly successful, with tables sold out as over 16 teams and 150 people took part, raising close to $2500 that will go towards the hall’s upkeep.

It was not just trivia! There were six rounds of questions but multiple other interactive games in between as bonus rounds to win points.

For example, ‘minute to win it’ games like the fastest person to wrap up their partner in a toilet paper roll or having a tissue box tied to their bum full of ping pong balls and the first to empty it without touching it.

Wyreema Hall Secretary Sara-Jane Howell said the Hall would like to thank Anthony Kings for being the MC for the night and the Wyreema community for their fantastic support.

“Everyone enjoyed a fun filled night full of laughter and entertainment,” Mrs Howell said.

“We had a tie finish between 2 teams - The Magic 8 Team and The Golden Girls with the Golden Girls coming out on top having to assemble a kids toy blindfolded while their team mates screamed their helpful instructions.”

Toowoomba still busiest LifeFlight base

Toowoomba has retained its title as the busiest RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter base, according to financial year figures.

The Toowoomba RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter came to the aid of 656 people in the past twelve months and spent 854 hours in the air, bringing emergency care to the most remote corners of the region.

The missions are valued at approximately $16.4 million, which comes at no cost to the patients.

Throughout the financial year, crews saw an increase in callouts for motor vehicle incidents, with ten more crash patients airlifted than during the previous financial year.

The choppers were tasked on 68 missions relating to people injured in motor vehicle incidents, including road crashes, motorbike incidents, quad bike accidents and other off-road crashes - positioning these as the second most common mission type.

Plans to build church at Top Camp

A development application has been submitted to Toowoomba Regional Council on behalf of West Toowoomba Gospel Trust to build a church at 3 Schmidt Court, Top Camp.

The 5,298m2 site, zoned rural residential, borders the New England Highway directly north of Beauly Drive.

The planning report, compiled by Precinct Urban Planning, says the proposal seeks a Development Permit for Material Change of Use. “The site previously included a residence and outbuildings that have recently been removed,” the report says.

“The proposed worship facility will be located at the northern end of the site and will address Schmidt Court.”

Westbrook Wheels’ Show ‘n’ Shine

Hundreds of people saw more than 140 cars on display at Centenary Park in Westbrook last Saturday for the annual Westbrook Wheels’ Show ‘n’ Shine, with funds raised going to Bunker’s Hill State School.

Although there are no more new Holdens, the classics such as this Torana (above) and Commodore (below) will stick around thanks to the passion of their owners.

HARD WORK PAYS OFF Greenmount wrapped up Term Three’s amazing term of learning with a Positive Behaviour Learning Rewards Day. All students had demonstrated excellent work towards their learning and behaviour goals throughout the term.

We were so proud of all of our students and had 100 per cent attendance for the day demonstrating the Strong, Safe and Successful efforts of all of our students.

CLUSTER BAND Some of our instrumental musicians have been travelling to Back Plains State School on Tuesday afternoons this year to work with the cluster band and play together under the guidance of Mr Slone.

Brookie, Sam and Riley then preformed their much loved ‘Battle of the Primes’ along with other numbers with the Clifton Cluster at the Winter Concert.

Their performance was a real hit!

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL We all enjoyed our Small Schools Athletic Carnival hosted

by Emu Creek.

We loved watching all of our students participate and cheer on their school mates, demonstrating school spirit and pride.

Their smiles said it all.

READY FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR We have all hit the ground running for term 4, and the keenness of our students has been fabulous to see.

Our instrumental students have been busy practicing their pieces for the upcoming Toowoomba Eisteddfod and our athletes have been busy honing their skills for what is traditionally an action-packed term.

We can’t wait to see what they all will achieve this term!
