Galloping to success

Greenmount’s Clear Mountain Fairview Stud has plenty to be excited about following the success of Worthy Cause, Champion First Season Sire at the 2020-21 Thoroughbred Breeders Queensland Association (TBQA) awards. What particularly impressed the TBQA judges, who have described Worthy Cause as a “promising young sire,” is his strike rate of 71.4 per cent. Worthy Cause (right) has had five winners from seven starts for a total earning of $413,850. His top performer was Hinged with five wins and earnings of $268,350. Hinged won the 2YO QTIS Performer award with $125,700 in QTIS bonus prize money. Stud Master of Clear Mountain Fairview Bob Frappell said he was thrilled with the “precocious” Worthy Cause’s success. “It was really good. Because he was a sire no one expected it,” Mr Frappell said. “He is one of the best freshmans in Australia.” Mr Frappell said as the highest earner and win getter in Queensland, there had been “plenty of interest this year” in breeding Worthy Cause. “He’s one of the best value mares in the country,” he said. “We’re looking for as many mares as we can get to him.” Worthy Cause was destined for success as the offspring of Choisir, winner of the 2003 Ascot Golden Jubilee Stakes, 2003 VRC Lightning Stakes and 2003 King’s Stand Stakes, as well as an inductee in the Australian Racing Hall of Fame. Besides Hinged, Worthy Cause has had other successful juveniles, including Ain’t She Lovely, a winner over 1100m in Ipswich Turf Club, Follow at Ipswich Turf Club 2YO

Plate and Constant Cause and Fire King, both Queensland Thoroughbred Incentive Scheme (QTIS) winners. Mr Frappell said he has more than pleased with the investment Clear Mountain Fairview made in Worthy Cause. “He’s a lovely type of horse with a very good temperament,” Mr Frappell said. “He really is a good horse.”

Is sesame the crop of the future?

Scientists from the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) are helping to explore the possibility for sesame to be grown as an alternative crop to sorghum, soybean or mungbeans. Dr Adorada is specifically looking for diseases and pests that could attack sesame and is investigating how any diseases or pests discovered could be managed during production. “We trialled high quality white and black sesame varieties and, in some plots, we found a particular pathogen that cause a disease called as charcoal rot,” he said. “A few other fungal and bacterial diseases were also found, which while important, they were not a surprise.” Director of the Centre for Crop Health, Professor Levente Kiss, said sesame was of great interest to Australia farmers as it was a drought and heat tolerant crop. “This is research of national significance, and our involvement really speaks to the level of expertise USQ has in this sector,” he said. “With Australia relying on imports of sesame seed and sesame oil, it has the potential to be very lucrative to farmers throughout Queensland and New South Wales which makes it Keeping it Local an exciting project to be part of.” The research is led by the University of Southern FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED Queensland in collaboration with national research and JUSTIN AND GRETTA BARTON STOCKIST development corporation AgriFutures Australia, through FOR ALL YOUR BULK FUEL NEEDS CONTACT JUSTIN Savannah Ag Consulting Pty Ltd, and is supported by the 0439 972 223 Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries through the Broadacre Cropping Initiative. www.bartranzpetroleum.com.au Lot 1 New England Highway Allora

Mixed safety results for local postcodes

• SALES • SERVICE • INSTALLATION

Research from insurance company Budget Direct has shown that there is some discrepancy between the rate of property crime for local postcodes. The findings use property crime data taken from Queensland Police, accounting for only ‘Unlawful Entry’ and ‘Other Theft (excluding Unlawful Entry)’ events from 2017 to 2020. The 4358 postcode, including Cambooya, Felton and Vale View, has a crime rate of 81 per 1,000 properties, ranking 230th out of 372 Queensland suburbs. The 4359 postcode, including Greenmount and East Greenmount, has a rate of 47 ranking 136th. The 4360 postcode, which covers Nobby, has a rate of 30 ranking 84th. The postcodes covering Wyreema, Westbrook and Hodgson Vale cover large areas so the data is less informative. The Queensland state average is 130 crimes per 1,000 properties.

TRC joins Wastewater Surveillance Program

The Toowoomba Region will soon be one of the local government areas participating in the Queensland Government’s Wastewater Surveillance Program. Mayor Paul Antonio said as part of the program, Queensland Health was conducting a state-wide program of disease surveillance for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. “At this point in time there is no suggestion there are any issues within our community however, Queensland Health wants to do everything it can to find out more about this virus and we’re happy to provide assistance however possible,” Mayor Antonio said. The program is expected to run until at least 30 June 2022. The monitoring of wastewater is a vital tool for monitoring COVID-19 in communities when disease transmission is too low to be identified from clinical testing. In other states, wastewater surveillance has provided early warning of unknown cases in the community. This type of testing also assists health professionals understanding more about any new variants of the virus. To gain further knowledge, more than 50 wastewater treatment facilities in metropolitan and regional Queensland will be tested for the virus.

Wattles finish second

Despite a 26-12 loss to Warwick on the weekend, the Wattles Warriors A Grade side has finished second on the TRL ladder, booking a home final. Adding to the evening’s grim result was a concerning injury to player/coach Travis Burns. Regardless of the result, Wattles have finished the fixture season in second place on the ladder behind Minor Premiers Goondiwindi. With the scores locked at 0–0 in Sunday’s clash Burns left the field in the 20th minute with an ankle ligament injury that has him in serious doubt for this weekend’s initial semi-final round against the Valleys Roosters. Burns was disappointed with his side’s performance against Warwick, with a win vital to Wattles’ chances of securing a home semi-final at Platz Oval this Sunday. Despite the loss Wattles’ for and against record saw them finish ahead of the Roosters in the finals equation and so host a massive day of finals action in Clifton. Wattles never seemed to get into stride against the Cowboys, who have emerged victorious in three of the two sides four 2021 season encounters. At half time the two teams were shoulder to shoulder at 6-all, the Matt Grew coached Warwick outfit was the first on the scoreboard in the 27th minute through a Dylan Galloway try before Wattles’ utility forward Mitch Koina touched down five minutes later to level the ledger. The Cowboys crossed for three second half tries, Toowoomba representative Mitch Watson touching down in the opening stages of the second stanza. Player of the Match and home side half-back Mitch Wilson scored the first of a try double after 49 minutes, allowing the Cowboys to ease away to an 18-6 lead. A successful penalty goal my five-eighth Matt Marshall had Warwick ahead and well in control of the game at 20–6 in the 55th minute. The Warriors nailed their second and final four pointer through slick flanker Matt Christensen, then trailing 12-20 and the match still within reach. But star of the match Mitch Wilson closed the contest with his second try five minutes from full time. Wattles take on a resurgent Valleys Roosters in Sunday’s qualifying final at Platz Oval. Warwick 26 defeated Wattles 12 (Matt Christensen, Mitch Koina tries Matt Duggan 2 goals) Continued on page 15
