For 17 years, The Adviser, in partnership with the GMCU, has been rewarding the community for shopping locally through a special giveaway promotion, and this year the 2019 GMCU $30,000 Giveaway is set to continue its growth trend, with over 160 businesses expected to participate this year. During last year’s promotion, a record 98,545 entries were submitted at over 160 local participating businesses, with shoppers once again being given the chance to enter this year’s promotion at over 160 local businesses. Included are mainstream retailers, jewellers, cosmetics, eyewear, supermarkets, specialty stores, bedding, whitegoods, tools, food outlets, tyres, fashion, furniture, toys, shoes, phones, flooring, mowers, manchester, books, giftware, computers, automotive, hardware, camping, shooting, fishing and much more right across the Greater Shepparton. The Adviser managing director,

Geoff Adams said, “The giveaway shopping local promotion began in 2003 and since then we have seen 226 winners and almost 900,000 paid entries placed at hundreds of local businesses. “That means that together with GMCU and with help from the local community, we have helped to keep the support up for local business and continue to grow our wonderful region. “We are proud to see the GMCU throwing their support behind such an important initiative. They have always been a big advocate of the local community and have been involved in helping support many local groups, organisations, residents and the wider business community and this is just another way that they continue to do that. “While employees and owners of participating businesses are not eligible to enter themselves at their own businesses, they can enter at other businesses. So everybody has the chance to win. “We are also once again going to have the ‘employee participation category,’ where a staff member who signed a winning ticket will go in the draw for the chance to win $1,000.

But it doesn’t stop there. We also have eight consultation prize winners this year of $500 each, which is an increase by four in previous years, and we are once again offering $500 supplementary prizes to businesses with the most number of entries in their category of 1-4 employees, 5-15 employees and 16 plus employees. “Congratulations once again to last year’s major prize winner, Wendy Barton, who walked away with a $5,000 holiday voucher thanks to Lyn McNaught Travel and a $5,000 GMCU debit card… you could be our next $10,000 winner; all you have to do is shop locally at participating businesses to be in the running.” GMCU CEO, Melissa Ralph commented, “As a customer-owned financial institution GMCU is committed to providing a local banking alternative. “We are proud of the small part we play in our local region, and encourage locals to explore everything our area has to offer by shopping at the many fantastic businesses we have in Greater Shepparton.” $30,000 UP FOR GRABS… From left, GMCU staff member and 2019 GMCU $30,000 Giveaway model, Maria Varapodio, GMCU CEO Melissa Ralph, The Adviser managing director, Geoff Adams and GMCU staff member and 2019 GMCU $30,000 Giveaway model, Jisha Joy. Dominique’s story I WAS born and raised in Shepparton. At the age of 16, I started working at a well known local pharmacy and it was there I gained my passion for beauty therapy. In 1981 my mum Barbara Little brought a hairdressing salon at 6 Fryers Street and from there, Hairtrend was born. I left the pharmacy to work in the salon and after successfully completing my first waxing course in Melbourne. I became the first person in Shepparton to run their beauty room from inside a hairdressing salon. I then went on to continue courses in Melbourne on facials, skincare and nails and I was again the first person to locally introduce acrylic nails, fibreglass and later, gel nails. In 1982, I did my hairdressing apprenticeship, and in that time combined my hairdressing and beauty clients. After completion of my apprenticeship, I gave away hairdressing and decided to concentrate fully on beauty therapy. The owner of a renowned establishment in Hampton, Melbourne, asked me if I would like to learn semi-permanent makeup in 1993. Of course, I said yes and after completing my training, I became the first person in country Victoria to do semi-permanent makeup. As time went on, I completed more advanced training in Melbourne as a cosmetic technician and then in 2014, I went to Los Angeles to obtain my CPDA (Certified Professional
