The CFA like many has had its share of challenges this year. Volunteers, their families and our staff have continued to provide a valuable service to our community and we are proud of this.

This is also an opportunity to remind people in our Region a couple of key messages.

Preparing your property means you minimise the chance of property damage during a fire. Ensure you have a fire plan. Ensure your barbeque is safe, check the fittings and hoses for deterioration and leaks.

It’s been a tough year for everyone with all the changes to our lives due to COVID. It has made us realise how important our family and friends and workmates are, and how much we enjoy their company.

No doubt this Christmas will be a special time to get together, so I ask that you think carefully about your behaviour towards others. Not only your family, friends, and workmates, but also to others in the community and on the roads. Please be respectful of others. Throughout the past year there have been many challenges for the Greater Shepparton community and the Goulburn Valley region.

This includes responding to multiple COVID-19 outbreaks, a third of our community in 14-day isolation and the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccination program.

Looking back, I am impressed with the response to the COVID-19 incursions in our community and the way GV Health and the community came together to support each other.

On behalf of GV Health, I want to thank everyone who helped our local contact tracing team to track the way COVID-19 was spreading in our community and for getting COVID-19 vaccinated.

As we continue to live with COVID-19 in our community, I want to encourage people to continue being COVIDSafe.

We get to enjoy the freedoms that come with a high COVID-19 vaccination rate, and over Christmas I hope you take the opportunity to catch up with family and friends who you may not have seen in some time.

At this time of year, paramedics regularly see the devastating results of road trauma. When you’re on the road, be patient, be alert and take care - especially in situations where there’s increased traffic.

The forgotten toll on our roads is those whose lives are changed forever because of serious injury.

Our paramedics are part of the community and often are called to crashes that might’ve been avoided. It’s a sad reality that in country Victoria our paramedics will sometimes come across someone they know.

Given the upcoming holiday period, the last thing we want is for you end up in the back of an ambulance.

As paramedics, the roadside is often our workplace so when you see us stopped by the side of the road, please slow to pass at 40km/hr if safe to do so.

Just like you, at the end of the day, we want to go home to our family and friends.

Finally, save Triple Zero (000) for emergencies.

Every call for assistance that isn’t an emergency puts significant strain on our crews to reach those who need us the most.

After another rollercoaster year of lockdowns and disruptions, we celebrate our amazing students who stayed the course with their studies, including those who have completed final year and now move on to graduate employment; our dedicated staff who reinvented, adapted and moved mountains to support our students to succeed; and our local organisations who made field work, placements and professional practice happen during a pandemic – again.

We also acknowledge the contribution of many La Trobe students and staff to keeping our community safe, whether that be assisting with food deliveries or leading vaccination campaigns.

What a year!

It’s hard to believe the Christmas season is already upon us and as we all start preparing for the end of the year, this is also an opportunity for reflection.

2021 was especially tough for our Shepparton community and I admire your tenacity and the way you supported each other through the tough times, well done.

I am immensely proud of what GOTAFE students and staff have achieved in 2021. As someone who believes in the transformative power of education, there is a huge amount of positive work happening at GOTAFE and I am optimistic that we will have more great news to share in 2022.

As 2021 draws close to a conclusion and we look forward to celebrating Christmas, we reflect on what a year it has been.

Our region made it through a year of repeated COVID lockdowns and at the end of the year it is pleasing to know that with the response to the call for vaccination, that once again, Shepparton has been a leader in the state for being innovative and resourceful.

Our region, and Greater Shepparton has survived once again, however with some people and businesses doing it very hard while others able to be successful in adapting and modifying how they operate to make a success of a difficult time.

I extend the best wishes of Greater Shepparton Secondary College to our staff, students and their families at Christmas.

Our school community includes many different cultures and faiths. So, however you might mark our term break, I wish our school community a safe and happy holiday.

This break provides our teachers some welldeserved time away from the classroom. For extended periods in the last two years, they’ve had to deliver lessons remotely and this has required an incredible amount of extra effort.

The last two years have also seen our four

secondary schools merge into one, requiring many of our staff and students to undergo change of campuses and familiar surroundings.

As we enter 2022, our merger is complete with the move to a brand new, single campus.

May I thank everyone for their understanding, patience and appreciation of the immense change taking place in the delivery of secondary education in Greater Shepparton. As we prepare to move into our brand new school, we are privileged to be experiencing such unprecedented investment in our young people.
