Shepparton real estate market booms

ANECDOTALLY, people have heard about it, and recent statistics from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) back it up: Melburnians are leaving the city for new regional homes – including Shepparton.

According to the ABS, more people left Melbourne in the June quarter for regional centres or interstate than any other time in the last 19 years, and it’s expected the trend has continued through the September quarter. Meanwhile, real estate prices in Greater Shepparton have spiked.

It’s a trend that has been noticeable to Simonds Homes Shepparton sales consultant, Glenn Wilson.

“We’ve seen a lot of people come up because of the job opportunities, and that’s given us a real boost, but we’ve also seen a whole range of other people moving out of Melbourne,” he said.

“Previously, they’ve come up for work. Now we’re seeing people come up for lifestyle.”

Local wine industry under threat AUSTRALIA and indeed, the Goulburn Va l l e y r e g i o n , h a v e d e v e l o p e d a reputation for producing excellent wines notwithstanding some of the more recent issues facing the industry.

Leading into last season’s harvest were droughts and the risk of smoke taint from the bushfires that raged across the state.

This year, a new set of problems are facing the industry. First up, COVID-19 has brought about incidental problems more related to the international seasonal workers, skilled winemakers in particular, who work the European and North American vineyards in their season and travel to Australia in ours. Travel restrictions are likely to see a dramatic drop-off in these available skilled workers in this coming season.

On top of that, in what seems to be an ongoing political to and fro, Chinese importers are being told that as from November 6, Australian wine will not be granted customs clearance into China amid

claims of dumping and government subsidies to wine producers ahead of proposed tariff increases in China.

Bron Dunwoodie, co-owner of Wine by Sam out of Seymour, who took out Class 1 honours for a shiraz in last year’s Dookie Wine Show, had just finished putting together a seven-pallet consignment of their wines to China when the announcement was broadcast.

“The idea of dumping doesn’t really fly.

Our wine prices to China are higher than the prices we get from Europe,” said Bron.

“We are still waiting to hear if our shipment will be affected by the embargo.”

Other winemakers in the region will similarly be affected with a number heavily committed to the Chinese market that has risen over the last decade or so. China now takes more than $1.4B of Australian wine each year.

Remembrance Day – Lest We Forget

By Steve Hutcheson IT is now over 100 years since the First World War ended yet the significance of that occasion is still solemnised each year on November 11 at cenotaphs across the country in memory of the many lives lost in the cause and in the subsequent wars since.

Like many of us, both of my grandfathers

served with the Australian Infantry Forces in the Middle East as part of the ANZAC contingent. My father’s uncle died in Palestine and is buried at the military cemetery in Alexandria in Egypt.

This year, due to COVID-19, regulations permit only 10 people to gather at ceremonies such as this and so the wreath laying ceremony will be conducted by

committee members of the Shepparton RSL at the Shepparton and Mooroopna Cenotaphs at 11.00am on Wednesday, November 11.

Members of the public who would like a wreath laid are asked to have it available before 10.30am on the morning or they may do so after the ceremony has concluded.

The nation-wide celebration recognises the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of this nation.

On the front lawns of the campus, Yorta Yorta woman Aunty Merle Miller performed a Welcome to Country in traditional language before students walked through the smoke of green eucalyptus leaves.

“Welcome, friends. You walk upon the land of my people, the Yorta Yorta people, and we acknowledge as well the Bangerang peoples of this nation,” Aunty Merle said.

“Take pleasure in all our land. Respect all that you see, respect all people, but the big thing we want to get out there, is to respect each other.

“If you don’t know one another, get to know one another. Share with others out there. Non-Aboriginal people want to, mostly, understand our culture, but it’s up to us to help share it as well,” she said.

Looking for the right job in agriculture AGRICULTURE professionals are not just farmers and orchardists and nor are all of the jobs in agriculture simply picking fruit although, that too is important and needs to be done. Opportunities in this field include areas as diverse as science, engineering, finance, marketing, exporting and everything in between.

The Goulburn Valley is blessed with a dynamic agricultural industry and as it grows, it opens numerous new jobs and occupations that offer choices for almost everyone.

One of the problems of the past is that kids on farms have tended to migrate to the cities to find employment while overlooking some of the more interesting jobs available in the country.

W h i le m a ny jobs requ i re ter t ia r y qualifications there are a whole range of careers working on a farm that can be achieved through gaining experience,

sometimes from the bottom up.

Wineries are a good place to start. Wineries need skilled winemakers and viticulturalists to produce some of Australia’s excellent wines but they also need skilled workers to carry out mechanical harvesting or pruning.

Sheep farming has needs for shearers a nd wool classers but it a lso needs livestock managers, veterinarians, livestock nutritionists, farm consultants, working dog trainers, livestock agents and wool brokers to work with farmers.

Cattle and dairy farming have a similar list of occupations ranging from dairy hand through to milk processing, food hygiene, irrigation, and animal husbandry.

Opportunities in agriculture for young school leavers are boundless if they are looking for a career that is not confined to being indoors all day long but not necessarily being tied to one farm. More often than not, it just takes a little looking about at what is on offer.

Former Mayor, Kim O’Keeffe, was re-elected with resounding support, capturing nearly 20 percent of first preference votes. Most-recent serving Mayor, Seema Abdullah was also re-elected, along with Fern Summer.

Rob Priestly, Shane Sali, Gregory James, Anthony Brophy, and Sam Spinks will commence their first stint in public office.

Mrs O’Keeffe said she was overwhelmed by the support she received through the vote.

“I feel very humbled by that, it certainly makes me even more determined to do more and do as much as I can for the community. It’s very, very touching to be so supported,” she said.

“I’m really excited to be re-elected for a second term.

Plastic waste: A giant problem

Victoria moves on container deposit scheme COM MU N I T Y consultation on a future Victorian container deposit scheme (CDS) has begun with an expected implementation in 2023.

A container deposit scheme allows people who return cans, small bottles and cartons to receive a cash refund. When you buy a drink in a can, bottle or carton, you pay a small charge to cover recycling costs. Once you’ve finished the drink, return the empty container to a collection point and get your recycling refund. The drink container is then recycled and made into something new.

Drink containers make up almost half of Victoria’s litter, so it’s expected a CDS will cut litter, reduce waste going to landfill, and increase recycling. It is one of the first pieces of environmental legislation to focus on the ‘polluter pays’ principle, where beverage suppliers are responsible for funding a refund for returned drink containers.

If someone discards an empty container, they forfeit the right to the refund and someone else would benefit by picking it up and collecting that refund.

Victoria and Tasmania are the only two jurisdictions in Australia which don’t yet have a CDS. Tasmania is expected to introduce one in 2022.

The move has been welcomed by the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV), the peak body for local government in Victoria.

MAV chief executive officer, Kerry Thompson, said councils have long advocated for a CDS and are now keen to ensure the scheme’s design maximises recovery of containers.

“We know there is strong community support for a scheme in Victoria, with recent polling by Infrastructure Victoria finding 92 per cent of respondents in favour of a CDS,” she said.

“One of the top priorities now should be to ensure that the design of the scheme provides for a network of accessible and convenient collection points right across the state.”

Ms Thompson warned that a scheme which is both coordinated and controlled by the beverage industry would be

conflicted, with the incentive to reduce costs by minimising the number of containers recovered too great.

The proposed CDS will include cans, small bottles, and cartons, on the basis that they’re the sort of drinks you buy when you’re away from home and are also the most commonly littered.

Not all drink containers are included. For example, plain milk containers, wine bottles, and spirit bottles won’t receive a refund.

That’s because they’re normally drunk at home, and less likely to become litter and can be placed into household recycling bins instead.

However, according to Ms Thompson, the scheme should also include wine and spirit bottles, and material collected must go back into beverage packaging to achieve a true circular economy.

“Victoria has a great opportunity to learn from the experience of other states and territories and build a CDS that is the envy of the nation,” she said.

AUSTRALIA generated 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste in 2018-19, however only nine percent was sent for recycling, while 84 percent was sent to landfill, according to data released by the ABS last week. The nation’s households were the largest contributor, supplying 47 percent of all plastic waste.

There’s no doubt the responsible production, distribution and recovery of recyclable plastic has become a flashpoint in people’s consciousness.

According to Ross Musolino, convenor of Transition Towns Tatura, an organisation concerned with improving the resilience of our community in the face of climate change and peak oil, he is very supportive of a Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) for Victoria.

“With the known benefit of reducing litter and thus diminishing threats to the environment, recycling beverage containers can only be a win-win for our communities,” he said.

Over its seven-year history, Transition Towns Tatura has participated in an ‘Adopt-a-Road’ scheme run by Vicroads, collecting rubbish over two stretches of roads entering Tatura twice a year (a distance of around 4.5km) and has picked-up an estimated 7,000 bottles and cans in that time.

“Offering people ten cents a bottle will reduce littering as it has in many other parts of the world,” Mr Musolino said.

“A CDS also allows recovery of a vast number of resources and can lead to a circular economy.

“Hopefully, this will then have a positive influence on other forms of recycling as people start to think a little more about things.”

Call for Sports Hall of Fame nominations SHEPPARTON has a proud sporting DNA with several home-grown athletes going on to represent in the nation and the state in a range of sports.

To recognise this, the Greater Shepparton City Council is seeking nominations for the Greater Shepparton Sports Hall of Fame.

The aim of the Hall of Fame is to preserve, celebrate and showcase the history and heritage of sports excellence and achievement of Greater Shepparton residents.

There are three categories of the Greater Shepparton Sports Hall of Fame: • Sports Hall of Fame • Sports Hall of Fame – Honour Role • Sports Hall of Fame – Junior Honour Role To be eligible for nomination and induction into the Greater Shepparton Sports Hall of Fame, the nominee must have made a

significant contribution to their sport at the Australian representative level. Previous inductees include 1950s boxer Max Carlos, cyclist Brett Lancaster OAM, and Olympic gold medallist hockey player, Louis Dobson OAM. To be eligible for the Honour Roll, the nominee must have made a contribution to their sport at the National or State representative level, and to be eligible for nomination onto the Junior Honour Roll, the nominee must have competed in junior competition at an Australian representative level.

Nominees and their nominators selected for induction by Council will be formally invited to the Greater Shepparton Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony to recognise and celebrate their achievements.

THE new Shepparton Art Museum is more than just taking shape – it’s nearing completion.

In the latest update from Greater Shepparton City Council’s manager – projects, Craig Exton, he described the last month of work as a hive of activity.

“Landscaping is one of the real key features people would have noticed driving around. Turf will be laid on the Orchard Hill on the north side soon,” he said.

“The plastering is basically done, painting is done, and the galleries are sealed off and ready to go.”

The front revolving glass door has been installed and the timber finishing on the main staircase has been put in place.

Racking in storage area is installed and office spaces are nearing completion.

The feature glass on the east and western side of the building has been installed. The glass, from China, was delayed due to the

Coronavirus pandemic but has since been fitted.

“It’s looking like a finished product on the outside,” Mr Exton said.

Break time never tasted so good AN iconic Shepparton pub has survived s om e of t h e d a rke s t d ay s of t h e Coronavirus lockdown thanks to a food van set up to feed hungry construction workers at the new Greater Shepparton Secondary College site on Hawdon Street.

When the Peppermill Inn bid for the business opportunity in mid-winter, acting venue manager Todd Van Kerkhof was hopeful it would help keep business ticking over while the south Shepparton pub had to shut up shop.

“It’s done so much more than that,” Todd said. “We did 10 kilos of coffee last week alone – the workers there really like their morning coffee with an egg and bacon roll.”

Todd said even with the Peppermill returning to capacity, its Hawdon Street food van will remain an important part of

the business through to the completion of the college in late 2021.

“We’re offering an alternative to a packed lunch, with freshly cooked food and a menu we change to match demand,” Todd said.

The kitchen is fired up from 6am and caters to the 100 or so workers on site, with those numbers to rise in pace with construction.

“When we were shut down it became a really good, positive project for us as a business,” Todd said.

“It kept the staff and management working and talking together as we sourced the van, fit it out and had our staff inducted to work on a construction site.

“It will be hard to leave when the school is all done!”

WDEA Works welcomes new chair

NOT-for-profit organisation WDEA Works, which offers disability employment services, jobactive programmes, training, and NDIS programs, has elected a new chairperson.

Dennis Barnett will head the organisation after the Committee of Management appointed him to the position at WDEA Works’ 31st AGM late last month.

Mr Barnett, who served the committee for three years as a member and treasurer, is deeply involved in his local Bendigo community, where he volunteers for the CFA, judges the Bendigo Business Excellence Awards, and runs free soccer clinics for disability service providers.

Councils and our personal data AS we round the corner on acquiring a new cohort of city councillors across the region, a new report put out by the Independent Broad-based Anti-Corruption Commission (IBAC) analyses the risks associated with the unauthorised access and disclosure of information held by local government.

IBAC deputy commissioner, David Wolf, when speaking at the Local Government Freedom of Information Forum, said, “Victoria’s councils need to manage a wide range of official, sensitive and confidential information, including personal and business details of ratepayers, planning, development and other business information to fulfil their functions.”

Mr Wolf warns misuse of personal information held by local government can amount to corrupt conduct. The IBAC report advises what local councils can do to address these risks.

“Given the recent council elections, the findings of this report present a timely

opportunity for all councils to build their corruption resistance, including for newly elected councillors, by strengthening their systems, processes and controls,” Mr Wolf said.

Councils can better prevent and detect misuse of information by adopting the Victorian Protective Data Security Framework for improving information security, increasing information security training, conducting comprehensive audit programs to identify and deter misuse, improving procurement processes, and raising employee and community awareness of risks and the importance of reporting incidents when they occur.

“While there are shared corruption risks across both parts of local government, local government employees and elected councillors, the corruption risks and drivers for each of these groups differ and need to be considered separately by councils,” said Mr Wolf.

TEA is the second-most consumed drink in the world, after water.

While here in Australia we’re pretty obsessed with coffee thanks to the tides of European migration and well, coffee, much of the rest of the world is awash in tea.

In many cultures tea still plays an integral part of the national identity. Think Japanese tea ceremonies and the Chinese medicinal use of tea. In Kazakhstan there is a saying that ‘the body of a Kazakh is 80 percent tea’.

Our tea culture came on the back of this country’s British influence. Still today, the UK consumes the third most tea per capita in the world, (behind Ireland and Turkey).

In Taiwan in the early 1980s, bubble tea was invented - a cold drink with chewy tapioca balls (‘pearls’) or a wide range of other toppings. Bubble teas can be made with or without milk and with a choice of black, green, or oolong tea, and come in many flavors.

There are two competing stories for the origin of bubble tea, but one includes a Taiwanese tea maker who began serving

Chinese tea cold after he saw coffee was served cold in Japan while on a visit there. The new style of serving tea propelled his business, and multiple chains were established.

The drink became popular in most parts of East and Southeast Asia during the 1990s and in Malaysia today there are more than 50 different brands selling bubble tea.

Consequently, bubble tea has become sy nony mous w ith Taiwan and is an important symbol of Taiwanese identity both domestically and internationally.

Here in Australia, bubble tea has grown in popularity over recent years. Any observer in Melbourne would notice the proliferation and popularity of bubble tea outlets.

Shepparton is no exception. Bubble Cuppa, at 257 Maude Street (opposite the CFA) has an inexhaustible range of flavoured bubble tea and has become a local favourite, particularly when the weather warms up.

Bubble Cuppa opened in Shepparton in November last year, and to celebrate their first birthday, they are doing a buy-one, get-onefree deal every Wednesday this month.

THE Dookie Wine Show, a celebration of wineries of the region, may look a little different this year without the traditional dinner taking place. However, entries are still open and encouraged.

Established with the aim of promoting local wines, the annual wine exhibition is held in conjunction with the Dookie A&P Society, Phillips Cellars and Regional Wine Centre, the Shepparton Adviser, the Greater Shepparton City Council, Goulburn River

Valley Tourism and is delivered by GOTAFE hospitality and events students.

Now in its 17th year, the Dookie Wine Show is open to wineries across Northern Victoria, with entries soon closing on November 18 with judging taking place on Saturday, November 21.

It’s why physiotherapist Daniel Jones set about designing orthotic thongs, ones that adequately catered for a younger demographic who care about their health and fitness.

“Despite my best attempts to advise my patients to wear more supportive footwear, this would almost always be ignored, as let’s face it, thongs are a way of life in the Australian summer!” Daniel said.

The result is Archies Thongs - thongs

(made in Echuca) which are now the choice of many of Australia’s elite athletes and now available at many of Australia’s leading health practices and athletic shoe stores.

“I attempted to eliminate many of the other design flaws of ‘regular thongs’ such as them often having a loose strap, having no heel elevation and having straps that are made from hard plastic which commonly causes irritation and often breaks at the toe pole,” he said.

Riders on the storm BEGINNING the adventure journey from Shepparton has an advantage, we are almost upon some of the most scenic riding country Australia has to offer and within half an hour can see riders heading along country dirt roads.

Shepparton Motor Cycle Club Inc, has since it was formed back in 1968, had as its major function, arranged rides that take in some of the regions and indeed the country’s most interesting scenery.

A ride might take a three week trip up through the centre of Australia to the Gulf country and Cairns in north Queensland

Just this month they have taken a one day, 450km circuitous ride through Violet Town into the Strathbogies, to Merton with a lunch at Yark and then home, 300km of that being on dirt roads with the bitumen just being the connections.

President of the club, Gary Ford, has been with the club since it first formed in 1968 when the touring was primarily done on the back of a Honda 90, posties bike.

The club is looking for more riders to join with them on a one-day, 400km ride to take place on November 22. With COVID-19 in mind, the club is asking for expressions

of interest from riders looking to take the run so they can make forward bookings for lunch at some remote watering hole.

They are also planning another ride up to Deniliquin on November 29, where they plan on visiting a private motor museum during the day.

The club also has its own speedway track at Undera and with their own bike, will be getting riders a chance to test themselves around the circuit.

Victoria on track to eliminate cervical cancer by 2030 A NEW report by the Cancer Council Victoria suggests Victoria is on track to become the first jurisdiction in the world to eliminate cervical cancer.

Cervical cancer is largely preventable through HPV vaccination and cervical screening, yet sadly 218 Victorian women were diagnosed with the disease last year.

Screening program manager at Cancer Council Victoria, Kate Broun, said the data indicates that the renewed National Cervical Screening Program, which commenced in December 2017, is working.

“We’re reaping the rewards of having a National HPV Vaccination Program.

The report shows a significant decline in pre-cancer and invasive cervical cancer in young women, indicating the effectiveness of HPV vaccination,” said Ms Broun.

However, Ms Broun said that while Victoria is making excellent progress towards the target of eliminating the disease by 2030, a global goal set by the World Health Organisation, we need to increase uptake of cancer screening and HPV vaccination to reach this goal.

“Currently only 53 percent of eligible Victorians are taking part in cervical screening, and 80.9 percent of Victorian

girls are fully vaccinated against HPV. Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander women and women from some culturally diverse backgrounds have higher rates of pre-cancer and invasive cervical cancer.

35,924 Victorians were diagnosed with cancer and 11,329 died from cancer this year. This equates to 98 new diagnoses every day, or one diagnosis every 15 minutes, and 31 deaths every day.

The five most common cancers in Victoria are prostate, breast, bowel, lung, and melanoma, collectively accounting for 57 percent of all new cancers and 46 percent of all cancer deaths.

“There are many patients who are

seeking a female health professional for all sorts of reasons, whether they feel more comfortable discussing their issue with a woman, or for their at times, different bedside manner, or the time and care they take with patients.

“Most importantly, they provide inspiration and encouragement for many rural kids who get to see, first hand, women with successful careers, who are leaders and respected members of their communities, and who provide mentorship for many young people, particularly those aspiring to a medical career.”

COVID-19 and the pandemic of denial

Thunderstorm asthma WITH pollen levels forecast to peak over these next few weeks, people are being urged to make sure they’re aware of the symptoms of asthma and know when to call for help.

Th un d e rsto rm a sth m a se a so n officially runs from October to the end of December, but the peak risk occurs around the middle of November. The Bureau of Meteorology says pollen will be high early this week and thunderstorms are forecast during the week.

Asthma, seasonal hay fever and COVID -19 have some symptoms in common. Symptoms of hay fever include a runny or itchy nose, sneezing, and itchy, watery eyes while asthma s ym pto m s i n cl u d i n g wh e ezi n g , breathlessness, a tight chest and persistent cough. COVID symptoms also include a runny nose, tight chest and cough.

If you suffer from seasonal hay fever, you are at increased risk of asthma developing during a thunderstorm

asthma event, so speak to your GP or pharmacist about treatment and whether you need to have an asthma preventer.

If possible, go inside your house or car and close your doors and windows.

If you have an air conditioner, switch it on to recirculate the air.

Don’t hesitate to call Triple Zero (000) if you or someone near you is experiencing symptoms such as obvious difficulty breathing, coughing or wheezing, unable to speak a full sentence in one breath or reliever medication isn’t lasting as long as usual.

Thunderstorm asthma occurs when whole pollen grains are swept up into the clouds as a storm matures.

Moisture in the clouds breaks the pollen into smaller particles which are then blown to ground level where they can be breathed deeply into the lungs.

This makes it difficult to breathe and can result in the sudden onset of severe asthma symptoms such as wheezing, chest tightness and coughing.

EVEN as we gradually move out of the restrictions that have been i m p o s e d i n d e a li n g with th e Coronavirus, many people deny the need for the measures taken.

Catastrophe provokes varied re sp o n se s , p a r ticula rly if th e catastrophe is truly unexpected, like the arrival of interstellar aliens on the front yard lawn.

One of the more common re s p o n s e s to d i s a s te r i s th e psychological defence of denial, the problem doesn’t exist. COVID19 demonstrates that denial is more than protean, for some, it can provide pleasant and profitable experiences.

A popular variant of this is seen in young people who say, “I’ve got nothing to worry about, because COVI D -1 9 is just ba d for old people.”

Denial of disaster is normal.

When you’ve lost your job and livelihood, can’t pay the rent, and fear entering a grocery store might kill you, lots of folks just want the whole thing to go away.

Sorry, it’s not going away.

Yet the denials of the reality of COVID-19 have proven remarkable, cre atin g it s own p ro p ag a n d a industry.

This is all new. People know we’re guinea pigs. Things have to open up. But how do you do it? What trade offs are worth it?

We do want to know the results however, how many cases and deaths will ‘normal’ haircutting cause? What are the risks of flying in a plane?

Without coordinated testing, isolation, tracing and tracking, you won’t know the answers. Unless, perhaps, it ’s too late to stop a raging epidemic.
