SHEPPARTON Art Museum’s (SAM) local exhibition featuring the practice of local Photographer, Serana Hunt, Dookie Behind Doors, officially opened last week, alongside the Friends of SAM exhibit, Best of Friends. It was the love of her home town in Dookie and her curiosity that lead Serana to knock on every door in the township, in a bid to capture the compelling series of incidental portraits conveying the everyday lives and idiosyncrasies of the 286 residents at home and work. Dookie Behind Doors was produced as part of the Regional Arts Victoria’s Small Town
Transformations event Dookie Earthed, held in October last year. Serana said, “I love Dookie and really felt the need to take a photo of everyone in the town. “I took 170 photos in total, and it was nice to have been able to open up what is in the town of Dookie. “It was a process of discovering; like a treasure hunt and I found a gem behind every door. “It was really a nice way to bring the town together.” The annual Friend of SAM Inc. exhibition,
Best of Friends, is also on display and offers a range of works from across a range of mediums. Friends of SAM President, Ann Fagan said, “We have more than 50 works on display. This exhibit is important for the friends group. It is seen as an opportunity for local artists to exhibit in an art museum, which doesn’t come up very often for community artists.” Entry to SAM is free and is open 7 days from 10am to 4pm (public holidays 1pm to 4pm). SAM is open during the Holiday Season excluding, Christmas and New Year’s Day.

How much are you really spending on printing? MANY businesses spend up to three percent of their revenue just using the office printer. On top of that, PricewaterhouseCoopers research shows the average employee makes 10,000 copies or prints each year, spends up to $1,200 in printing annually, but wastes 17 percent of all printed documents. Once they delve into it, most business owners are quite shocked at the actual amount employees clock up in printing each year, while the employees themselves rarely know the true cost of what they print and copy. Contributing to the high hidden costs, there is usually no-one monitoring or controlling what’s printed. Using a Managed Print Service is a simple solution. This can help your business achieve immediate savings, which really add up in the long-term. And here’s another way Viatek will help you with savings at this time of year. Simply buy or rent a Fuji Xerox Multi Function Device or NEC or Shoretel Phone System between now

The A Day On The Green concert series is well underway for the summer season, with the first stop after Christmas being at Mitchelton Wines, Nagambie. After a hugely successful first event last year, the popular winery concert takes place on Saturday, January 23 with another lineup of classic Australian artists: ICEHOUSE led by charismatic front man Iva Davies, the Baby Animals, Diesel, Models and Deborah Conway. Organisers say the crowd will enjoy a great day of their favourite Aussie songs with ICEHOUSE playing all their hits, including ‘Great Southern Land’, ‘Electric Blue’, ‘Hey Little Girl’ and ‘Crazy’. The secret to A Day On The Green’s
15-year success is the combination of great music with a group of friends sharing good food and wine in a beautiful location. Promoter Michael Newton said, “It was terrific to see how warmly the first A Day On The Green at Mitchelton Wines was embraced, not only in Nagambie but by the whole region. Everyone had such a great day. We’re looking forward to doing it all again in January.” Many of the artists will be meeting fans at the popular merchandise stand signings, while DJ Grand Master Baitz will again be spinning the discs between the sets. Merry Christmas 2015 Season’s Greetings
HOW quickly Christmas has come along again this year. My year has been filled once again with working to provide solid and fruitful outcomes for the people of Murray. Water has been our hardest fight so far, trying to get a new and fairer way forward for our struggling farmers and their families. In Murray, we are on the cusp of many great things, with new Free Trade Agreements providing new sources of business for our strong agricultural community. We need to ensure that the appropriate processes are in place so we can capitalise on these new opportunities. Murray does agriculture exceptionally well and I have made it my mission to try and provide the most equitable and vibrant future possible for our resilient community. We are blessed to live in a unique and diverse region that has the potential to grow and expand, and to comfortably raise our families here. I urge everyone to embrace the Christmas season by having a chat to their neighbours and extended families, enjoy some of the many wonderful community events on offer and provide a helping hand to those in need. My very best wishes.
Best wishes, Hon Dr Sharman Stone Federal Member for Murray

Merry Christmas 2015 Season’s Greetings
CHRISTMAS is a special time of the year – a time when we gather with family and friends to give thanks, enjoy each other’s company, and celebrate the beginning of a new year. It is a time to reflect on the milestones and achievements of the past 12 months and to look forward to the coming year. This year on Christmas Day my family and I will gather at home for our usual noisy celebration, where we exchange gifts and laughter, and enjoy just being together as a family. I hope you can celebrate this Christmas in a way that means the most to you, and that you enjoy the season of good will and happiness in the precious company of your family and friends. I hope 2016 brings all Victorians good health, prosperity and happiness. Season’s Greetings.

Merry Christmas 2015 Season’s Greetings
AS we look forward to Christmas and the New Year and a welcome holiday for many, I am most concerned that we take care on our roads. While I hesitate to raise this issue in a Christmas greeting I must point out that 10 people this year have died as a result of motor vehicle accidents in the Shepparton local government area, compared with two at the same time last year. I urge you all to ensure that your cars are safe and that you do not take any of the risks we are all so well aware of now. Let’s be mindful of one another in the weeks ahead so that we can happily enjoy the company of family and friends during the forthcoming holiday break. Peter and I both wish you a happy Christmas and New Year.

Merry Christmas 2015 Season’s Greetings
CHRISTMAS is a precious time to celebrate with family and friends while the New Year is a period for reflection and thoughts on the year ahead. While 2015 has seen its challenges, especially with recent climatic events for our food producers, whether it be an overall dry Spring or hail damage to our fruit growers. Equally though our region is well poised to take up some great opportunities. The SheppARTon Festival continues to evolve and was recognised recently at the Tourism Victoria awards, while we continue to see major investment in food assets such as Gerry Harvey’s $80M investment into dairy farming, NZ firm Seeka’s $25M strategic acquisition of horticultural assets in Bunbartha, Fonterra’s $120M commitment to a cheese plant at Stanhope, and the ongoing transformation of the SPC business and re-fit of the Shepparton plant. More realistic value for the Australian dollar provides ongoing optimism for export markets, particularly with the recent free trade agreements with China and Japan. At the same time, exciting initiatives such as the new Shepparton Art Museum will add to the liveability and positive image of our city. It’s a great time to be in Shepparton, and the Goulburn Valley! I would like to wish you a very safe Merry Christmas and 2016 and please be safe in your travels.

AT Rumbalara Aboriginal Co-operative, we try to keep a world perspective, we look beyond Shepparton, ourselves and our own situation. There’s a lot happening nationally and internationally. Internationally, we’re seeing the rise of fundamentalism and people willing to sacrifice humanity for ideology. Nationally, we’re seeing the approaches that are taken towards border protection and what is actually happening with the rights of and attitudes towards Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Looking even more locally, we are experiencing a rise in racism and the scourge of domestic violence. We need to get back together, so that children can play with children and so that the elderly and women are safe. This Christmas, we want everyone to celebrate the innocence of children, the optimism of youth and the wisdom of elders irrespective of culture, colour or creed. On behalf of Rumbalara Aboriginal Co-operative, we would like to wish the community a happy and safe Christmas and a positive and prosperous new year.

Responsible pet ownership Important points to remember about pets over Christmas By Farrier and Veterinarian, Dr Judith Mulholland BSc BVMS PEOPLE often mistakenly give the pet that they wish they were going to receive, as a gift. The animal they are about to give has a lifespan of 10 to 15 years. Never give a pet to anyone if you have not asked them. Research the breed for their lifestyle and situation. If you are going on holiday, please ensure that someone will be checking on your pets
each day - food, lots of clean, cool water in the shade, a shelter etc. Dogs on chains are at high risk of heat stress or becoming caught up. Make sure your pets are microchipped and the details are all up to date with the registry. Avoid travelling with your pets in hot weather. Plan your holiday with your pets in mind. Vaccination with C5 or F5 is required two weeks before you place your dog or cat in kennels.

By David Lee THE numbers of seats to be filled by councillors on Greater Shepparton City Council will rise from seven to nine from October next year, following the acceptance of the Victorian Electoral Commission’s (V EC) recommendation for the increase. The changes will be in place following the October general council elections next year, with Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Dinny Adem saying while council’s recommendation was not to change the current seven councillor system, there are positives. “We are not really disappointed in the fact that it is changing.
“The introduction of nine councillors will provide more opportunity for different sections of our community to be represented, whether it be geographical or culturally based.” Minister for Local Government, Natalie Hutchins said, “I have accepted the Victorian Electoral Commission’s independent advice to change the current number of councillors for Greater Shepparton City Council. This is about ensuring equitable and fair representation to local voters. “The review process is important in ensuring that our councils can continue to effectively and fairly represent their communities.”

Kevin Hicks’ Clearing Sale Coordinator, Chelsea McKay said, “We are always very excited to see the total when it comes in and to know that it is going toward such an important community service makes it just that much better.” GV Vintage Tractor and Farm Machinery Club Inc. Your Summer
lawn care advice
HELP YOUR LAWN BEAT THE HEAT… With the warmer weather now upon us, it is important to take care of your lawn. Photo: Supplied.
AS experts warn of harsh El Nino weather conditions this Summer, Australian turf growers are urging Australians to take some simple lawn care steps to help beat the heat.
Watering
• Water in the early evening so the water doesn’t evaporate too quickly. However, on extremely hot days, water as your lawn needs it. • A deep water a few times a week is better than a light watering more often. • Use a wetting agent if your lawn struggles to retain water. These are available from your local turf supplier.
Mowing
• Lawns grow more rapidly during Summer, so mowing more often is essential. • When mowing, be sure to match the height of your lawn to its usage – if your lawn is used heavily, keep it a little longer. • Keeping your lawn longer can also help it to better cope with the warmer weather; taller grass is more drought tolerant, grows deeper roots and helps shade the ground to prevent weed seeds from germinating. • Servicing your mower and keeping the blades sharp is an important step for lawn care; sharp blades create a cleaner cut and help prevent lawn disease.
Fertilising
• Resist the urge to fertilise during Summer – applying fertiliser in the heat of Summer can burn your lawn and can also create a flush of tender growth that will struggle in hot Summer weather.

A sailing holiday
Main: SCENIC LUXURY TRAVEL… The Scenic Sapphire Rivership is the luxury way to tour the waterways of Europe. Top to bottom: BEST WAY TO GET FROM A TO B… The Arc de Triomphe, one of the many landmarks of Paris, was easy for Marie and Coral to find with the hop-on-hop off bus. A MOVING EXPERIENCE… TThe Somme Battlefields was a very moving experience for Marie and Coral, 150,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers lost their lives. ULTRA FAST… Marie and Coral took the ultra fast TGV train travelling at 300 kilometres an hour to get to Dijon.
SAILING holidays have become the ‘in thing,’ whether it’s on the high seas or cruising along a river, you only have to unpack once and everything including all meals are supplied. So for Marie Burley of Kialla and travel companion, Coral Williams of Euroa it was off to Paris from where they would sail the Seine and the South of France. On arrival they had one night in Paris. They arrived too early to book into their hotel so they decided to walk the city as far as the Champs Elysees, with its many shops, cafés and patisseries with freshly baked delights. Then back to their hotel to get some rest. The next day they were up early and decided to take the hop on hop off bus tour of Paris. It was great with English commentary on the sights they would see. The first stop was the Eiffel Tower and they took time to explore the area. Marie says there were police and armed army soldiers everywhere; yes Paris was on alert in September well before the recent massacre. Their next stop was Notre Dame. The line to get in was huge but it moved quite quickly and they were soon on the tour. Reboarding their bus they continued to see the other major sights of Paris. Time was getting on as they had to be back at their hotel at 2:30pm for the transfer to their ship. They arrived at 2:45pm but all was ok and soon they were relaxing on their Scenic river cruise ship, the Gem. The first part of the tour would be for 10 days and then a change of ship and a total of 23 days cruising. Marie says you have a choice of various activities. While ashore, a trip to the palace of Versailles and tour of The Louvre and a local village were all good and made the visit very interesting. They now sailed to Rouen. They took a walking tour to see the site where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake. The memorial is still there, as is the massive cathedral. Then onto Lyon. They visited a cider factory. The cider was sweet just the way they liked it. Now a full day excursion to the Somme battlefields. It was very moving. Marie was not aware how big the battle had been, claiming over 150,000 lives of soldiers from Page 38 – The Adviser. Australia No. 1:1281 Wednesday, December 16, 2015
Britain and the commonwealth. They also saw the Australian National War Memorial at Villiers-Bretonneux. The Australian soldiers are held in high esteem by the French, as they fought to reclaim villages and save lives. A local school was destroyed in the war only to be rebuilt many years later by donations from Australian school children from Victoria. On the roof of the school are the words Never Forget Australia. 1,200 Aussie soldiers fought and gave their lives to save the town. Some more luxury time river cruising and then they arrived at the port for another full day excursion exploring the D-Day landing beaches of Normandy. The site is scattered with old bomb shelters and many museums stand as memorials to the landing. There are displays of landing vehicles, gun turrets and fortifications all commemorating D-Day, June 6, 1944. Now for a change of pace and a visit to Giverny and Monet’s house and famous garden. The great artist had drawn much insight from the gardens and as his sight faded so did the crispness of his paintings, which gave them a special glow. They now changed ships to the Scenic Sapphire, but first they boarded the ultra-fast TGV train for a whirlwind 300 kilometres an hour ride to Dijon, where they boarded their ship. They would now sail onto Burgundy and visit the Chateau de Cormatin, with its beautiful gardens and water features. You have to use a drawbridge to gain access to the chateau and its beautiful rooms. They now sailed onto Tournon and Viviers, Avignon visiting wonder ful valleys and national parks along the way. After 23 days of luxury travel, great food and so many exciting things to see for Marie and Coral their dream holiday was drawing to a close. They now transferred to Nice for one night to explore before boarding their flight back home. Both Marie and Coral would like to thank Rebecca Smith at Helloworld Shepparton for arranging everything.
Until next time, Safe Travel’n, Geoff Vallance

Sport precinct works continue M AJOR irrigation works are currently being completed at the Community Football Complex and works have begun on the netball courts as part of the development of the Greater Shepparton Regional Sports Precinct. The irrigation works are due to be completed in early January with the overall Community Football Complex due to be finished by February 2016. Also planned for completion in February, the $1.39M netball court redevelopment work includes 10 new netball courts, with lighting to provide Netball Victoria standard netball courts for participants. Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Dinny Adem said, “The new synthetic hockey field has received a National Accreditation

The surface has been independently tested for quality assurance, has demonstrated best practice and will increase worldwide promotion for games which is great news for the Hockey Association. “T he overa l l Sheppa r ton Reg ion a l Sports Precinct is a $19M redevelopment; this investment will establish it as a nationally significant sporting complex. The redevelopment will enhance our ability to secure and retain new major sporting events and large tournaments. “The 65ha site is centrally located with facilities currently accommodating different sporting codes and recreational activities.”

League wraps up a successful year THE Shepparton District Junior Football League (SDJFL) has highlighted a successful year during their AGM recently, which also saw Mooroopna’s, Mick Betson elected unopposed as the 2016 executive. Mick Betson will replace John Byrnes, who has stepped down after 10 years as a key contributor in many areas. Jason Ritchie and Peter Trevaskis were also elected to the expanded executive, as the first step in the implementation of the primary school review recommendations. The AGM also saw Chris Thomas set to return as league president with Andrew Sneyd as his deputy. All of the 16 review recommendations were endorsed by all clubs with four significant changes to be put into place for the 2016 season including a revamped governance structure that will provide for two places for the junior division at the table of the SDJFL executive. The Primary School Competition will be rebadged as ‘junior division’ and U10 and U12
age groups will replace the current divisional structure, and the U14 and U16 competition will be called the youth division. The primary schools in Shepparton will be consolidated into ‘clusters’ to enable children to participate in an age appropriate way and to consolidate volunteer workloads, with the set up of each cluster to be supported by a mentor who will guide schools through the process and the AFL Junior Match Policy guidelines will be adopted with a couple of local modifications. Two long serving club and league volunteers were also recognised at the meeting. Andrew Sneyd and Michael Betson have both been members of the SDJFL for more than seven years as club delegates, with Andrew joining the league executive in 2011. Both were presented with Recognition of Service Awards at the meeting. For the first time in its history, the league also announced that each club would receive a dividend, which will be credited to their account for 2016.
