New blood welcomed to steer youth activities A F T ER a recruitment drive in early December, Word and Mouth have welcomed 22 young people into the youth organisation, creating a new record for the most recruits in one year. The new recruits, who have committed to join Word and Mouth for 12 months, are from various backgrounds, ages, faiths
and schools, with the youngest being 12, the eldest being 24. The recruits will assist in putting on events and other activities in Greater Shepparton during the year. Word and Mouth Project Manager, Jim Gow said, “They’re a very diverse group from various backgrounds. It will be interesting to have new blood in the water and to have fresh
ideas floating around. We have some members from last year who have set themselves new challenges and goals so we are really hoping to see some great things in 2016. “We are also hoping to see the young people leave this year with something more that previous years, such as a first aid certificate.”

‘Be Consumed’ in the Shepparton Festival By David Lee IN true Shepparton Festival style, Mr Whippy rocked his way down Fraser Street to the grassy knoll in the Maude Street Mall, where tables and a rug were set up for a picnic and all to quirkily celebrate the launch of the 2016 Shepparton Festival guide and the festival’s 20th year. This year’s theme, Be Consumed is all about encouraging the community to get
involved in the 49 events that will run across the region over 17 days, from March 4 to 20. Festival Director, Ros Abercrombe said, “This year is an important year for us with the celebration of the festival’s 20th year. “But it’s more than just a celebration of 20 years, we are also celebrating being one of the longest running annual festivals in all of Australia, which is a great achievement. “Our creative concept this year is a trifle, which fits perfectly with our theme. A trifle is a matter of careful construction. It is a classic dish made with tradition, laden with nostalgia and is a dessert of indulgence. “A trifle has seven layers and these represent the seven layers of the festival. The jelly is the gathering of people, the cake represents the performances, the fruit is the music, the custard is the visual arts, the second layer of fruit is the film, the second layer of custard is the comedy and the cream and topping represent friends. “We encourage people to pick up the festival guide, explore the layers and ‘Be Consumed’ by artists, venues, places and experiences.” For further information on events, visit www.sheppartonfestival.org.au/ and follow ‘Shepparton Festival’ on Facebook.

Minor rise in school enrolments By David Lee GREATER Shepparton is about to see a minor rise in the number of students enrolled for the school year, with an estimated three more students hitting the school yard in government schools for the start of 2016. In the 2015 year, a total of 7,597 students started the school year, compared with 7,600 who will be starting this year. 706 preps began their first year in 2015 and

600 will put on their uniforms for the first time and say goodbye to their parents on their first day this year. 397 began their first day as a secondary school student last year, while 400 will begin year 7 this year. 358 began the 2015 year looking forward to their final year of secondary school, with the 2016 year seeing 400 students set to tackle year 12. A total of 4,609 students were enrolled
in primary school for the start of the 2015 year, but the 2016 school year is seeing 4,700 enrolled to attend primary school. 2,791 students were enrolled in secondary school at the start of 2015, with 2,700 students set to hit the school yard at secondary schools this year. The number of students attending special schools hasn’t changed much, with 198 being enrolled in 2015 and 200 enrolled for 2016.

lStudents to parade new look By David Lee ST UDEN TS at Gowrie Street Primary School will be starting the new school year with a new look, after the school announced it was set to introduce new uniforms carrying the school’s new logo. The new uniforms, which include a summer dress, winter skirt, jackets and shirts with a stylish black strip running down the left hand side, are all a part of the school’s plans to create a unique uniform for their students. The new logo, which depicts children, a tree that symbolises the school’s closeness to the river and the four ‘caring values’ of the school, was created to better reflect the
current values and where the school is today. Gowrie Street Primary School Principal, Travis Eddy said, “We had been talking about the change for a couple of years. The old logo had been around for more than 20 years and we decided it didn’t reflect our school as it is today very well, so we decided it was time for a change. “We chose the black strip on the shirts to break up the red and help our students to be better identified. “Our school community have been very supportive of the changes. It’s been a long journey and we are very proud of our results.”

The Adler is nothing new SHOOTING CONTROVERSY… Trelly’s Fishing and Hunting World Pro Staff, Nick Hillman with an Adler A110 20 inch model shotgun, which has been the topic of controversy due to misinformation being expressed about its technology being new. Photo: Emma Hillier.
By David Lee FIREARMS have long been in the spotlight and the topic of controversy, and the Adler lever action shotgun is no different. Recently, the Adler was wrongly perceived as a rapid-fire shotgun made from new technology according to Trelly’s Fishing and Hunting World Proprietor, Steve Threlfall. Steve said, “There is a perception that it is a new firearm that can fire rapidly and that it should be a controlled firearm, however this is just not the case. “In actual fact, the technology behind this firearm is over 100 years old and this type of shotgun has been in the country for as long as firearms have been sold in Australia. “It has been manufactured by a number of different firearm manufacturers including Winchester, in a number of different calibres from 12 gauge to .410. “It fits in with the criteria of Australian
laws to be sold to the public. “The anti-firearm lobbyists have brought out this misconceived idea as an effort to discredit or restrict genuine shooters the access to firearms like this. “At the end of the day the anti-firearm lobbyists don’t want guns in the community at all, and this is just another attempt at removing them. “Firearms are used as everyday tools for farmers, in sporting events, for the control of vermin and hunting and so restricting access to firearms from those who need them such as the farmers could potential be hazardous to the environment. “Firearms aid the control of vermin who are responsible for the killing of our native animals and florae and are used to ensure the survival of venerable and endangered native birds and wildlife.”

WE NEED A STRONG AND VIBRANT CBD Dear Editor, I read with interest Jenny Houlihan’s comments in regard to the re-opening of the mall to one way traffic. I note that she has totally disregarded the comments of business owners in the mall and also their evidence gathered over many years, that the mall as it stands is well and truly passed its use by date. I was also very interested to read that she noted that many had been in business for decades and if they weren’t able to make a living they would be out of there. I wish to point out that over the years there has been many businesses who have closed up shop as the foot traffic wasn’t there. Shops where these businesses were are still vacant – I suggest Jenny should walk through the mall and check on the empty shops – a mass exodus has happened and maybe there are more that are thinking of going. I also agree with Shepparton Chamber of Commerce and Industry President, Leanne Hulm that the mall has had a long history of debate with regard to the merits of opening or not. The council is of the opinion that it isn’t broken so we won’t fix it. The Commercial Activity Centres Strategy report after much consultation, has suggested that the mall needs fixing and some ways to go about this. We need a strong and vibrant CBD if we are to have a strong and vibrant city and as the mall is integral to this we need to fix it before it is too late. Yours sincerely, Shelley Sutton Shepparton
MALL PROCRASTINATION Dear Editor, How people forget. Some two decades or more ago when the Maude Street Mall was built it had problems from the word go. The first complaints were the concrete was causing such a glare in Summer - further work was required. It used to have water features near Identity (shop) and the cinema for people to throw cigarette buts in or urinate in after midnight on a Friday or Saturday. A children’s playground with (shock proof) tiles that had to be replaced which were expensive. The elderly felt access, regarding having to walk too far, and the list of waste and complaints over the decades have multiplied like bacteria. It’s a white elephant. We have seen various upgrades (renovations) plus CCTV which all come at cost to the ratepayer ie. middle class income earners. International research shows (two) decades ago that malls are a haven for loitering, anti-social behaviour and crime. Yet Greater Shepparton City Council went ahead. They were even touted a failure in Queensland prior to it being built. $4M to open the mall up vs $42M for SAM. It shows the council remain out of touch with the community. The demographics of people in Shepparton having trouble with employment, early teen pregnancy, living below the poverty line, limited access to education and a gambit of health problems won’t be able to afford tickets for Caravaggio’s artworks for touring regional Victoria. Champagne ideology with bad results. Yours sincerely, Tyler Tricarico Shepparton
Facebook Feedback
IN last week’s edition of The Adviser we ran a story on the Maude Street Mall and when posting the story to our Facebook page we asked you what you thought should be done with Shepparton’s Maude Street Mall. Here are your responses. “It should be reopened to traffic and allow parking, the heart of the CBD is dead and needs to be opened up and repaired. Tired of old councillors debating this for so long. I don’t agree with Cr Houlihan that the $4 Million will be a waste of money when Council wants to spend $14 Million ($10 Mill Loan +$4 Mill Interest) on the new SAM and another $5 million on relocating the Bus Terminus (Total $19 Million) I lived in Penrith NSW which also had a Mall and the CBD died, so they made the right decision to reopen it to traffic and since then it’s doing great.” Steve Templeman “Council should buy back OUR multi deck car park and give the shoppers 3 or 4 hours free parking.” - Mervyn Jack “l really don’t see anything wrong with the mall it is a beautiful area lots of effort has been put into social events for the mall but we just need our shop keeper to work a little harder and work with local events in our area we have thousands of tourist that have come to our city to shop while husbands and children are at sporting facilities caught up with Rotary weekend events etc at showgrounds and at civic centre these people come into our mall looking for shopping and food. l for one are so embarrassed to say there is none opened sat or Sunday god forbid or after 5.30 on Friday night now before you all
jump up and down and say no body is about that’s because you are all to lazy to organise yourselves and let the public now that you want to tap into weekend trade they have all gone or don’t come anymore. lf you go into town on a Sunday morning or sat arvo there is always people coming into town and are so, so disappointed there is nothing open hence they go to Vaughan street or Benalla Rd. Thanks to those who are but with some real thought sharing Shepparton could come alive work longer hours at weekends when your customers work all week and come to town from an hours drive away to arrive at 5pm to be turned away and told by an owner of the shoe shop he is closing at 5.30 he missed out on $800 sale between ourselves and the other couple with 3 teenage sons all to be fitted out with shoes and was rudely not served finished clearing up to shut up shop. Or waiting for 6mths for the rest of a set of coffee cups to come in after being told so many stories as to why they hadn’t arrived you are dealing with online get your act together and open weekends try having a weekday off instead don’t just blame the council you need to change too. Our multi deck car park is cheaper to park in than the street shaded great for your car to come into town for the day.” - Raelene Hayward “Only one way open it up to traffic, past use by date?” - Des Oneill “Outdoor food court...more selection of food. Buskers, festivals, music.” - Emma Hollows Boyden

How to build an outdoor deck Tools • • • • • • • •

Materials • • • • • • • •
String Concrete forms Composite decking Spray paint Wooden stakes Concrete Pressure-treated lumber Redwood pieces
Before you begin
Always check with local authorities/ council about permits and regulations and be sure to wear protective eyewear when working with power tools.
The dimensions
After measuring the dimensions of the yard, centre the placement of the deck using strings tied to wooden stakes. Continually measure and adjust the stakes until the strings form a square and level representation of the deck dimensions.
Mark your project
Next, using bright spray paint and little orange flags, mark the ground to represent the deck’s four corners and midpoints. These markings indicate the placement of the deck’s eight concrete support posts, called caissons.
Breaking ground
Temporarily remove the stakes and string and then use a power auger to quickly bore 15 inch holes at the marked locations. Remove any remaining dirt using a posthole digger.
Form the concrete
If the yard slopes slightly away from the house, the lower holes need extra height to reach the level string. To remedy this,
cut a cardboard caisson tube to length and rest the segments on the lower holes. These now serve as concrete forms.
Pour concrete
After mixing a batch of concrete, shovel it into the holes and lop off the excess using a spare wood stake. Before allowing the concrete to cure for 48 hours, insert a J-bolt into each caisson. Eventually, this will help tie down the deck.
Begin your deck frame
Start by forming the perimeter and a centre beam. After cutting several boards to length, screw treated lumber and redwood together to form double thickness perimeter boards. Because the centre beam remains hidden, only use pressure-treated lumber. Nail on steel bracket ties to give lateral support and make both boards flush using an electric planer.
Place your main boards
Keeping the more attractive redwood side out, fit the four perimeter boards onto anchor plates set on the caissons. Later, these anchors help permanently tie the
deck down. With the main boards in place, secure them together by nailing on corner brackets.
Finish the frame
With the perimeter complete, finish out the frame by installing treated joists. After installing steel joist hangers at 16-inch intervals, set in the joists and nail them in.
Install decking material
Having attached all the joists, finish up the deck by installing the decking material. To begin installation, start by squaring up the first piece of composite to the deck and attaching it to the underlying joists with composite decking screws. Continue screwing down the decking making sure to allow for a 1/4-inch gap between each plank. Attach several rows and stagger the cut seams for structural and aesthetic value.
Complete the deck
To complete the deck, permanently fasten the wood portions to the caissons by bolting down the anchor brackets and driving in nails through the perimeter.

STATE-OF-THE-ART CENTRE… An artist impression of the new $1.4M Katandra West Community Centre, which construction works began on last week. Photo: Supplied.
continued from front page THE new building was made possible through the State Government’s Regional Development Victoria fund contributing $500,000, Greater Shepparton City Council contributing $750,000 and Katandra West Community Facilities Committee of Management fundraising $150,000 towards the project. The centre will include a community meeting room, commercial kitchen, bar, function room, umpire change rooms, female change rooms and toilets and will bring a number of benefits to residents and user groups including Katandra Kats Football and Netball Club, local cricket
and tennis clubs, the Country Women’s Association, the CFA, Girl Guides and Katandra West Primary School. Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Dinny Adem said, “Council has been working with the local Katandra West community to ensure this project gets off the ground. “This is great news for the community who have been working really hard to ensure this new centre would proceed. The new centre will be a great facility to host functions for 250 people seated and more standing. They will be able to host a number of functions including community meetings, weddings, parties and conferences to name a few,” Cr Adem said.

COMMUNITY MINDED… Finny’s Retail Assistants, Danielle Anderson, Rhiannon Blick and Kerrie Lavis with Floor Manager, Shirley Blick. Photo: Emma Hillier.
FINNY’S is a local store, operating in its 27th year, run by family and by staff members who are regarded as family. “It’s very important to us to employ local staff,” Finny’s Floor Manager, Shirley Blick said. Finny’s is also very community minded, having supported many local charities, fundraising events and sporting clubs over the years. “We really care about the community as a whole, but can only continue our support if we have the mutual support of our loyal customers,” Shirley said.
Finny’s is currently running a massive stock clearance on quality manchester, until Saturday, March 5, 2016. “We need the space for exciting, new ranges, so we are clearing stock out at crazy, low prices. These prices are lower than we can remember for years.” “We want to keep our major sales something that people look forward to, but most of these lines have limited quantities. So people will need to get in quick.” Rush in now to grab a bargain at Finny’s, 136-138 High Street or phone 5831 2592.

By David Lee IT’S a fascination with military vehicles that lead local resident, Sol Sutherland to not let the chance pass by to own a 1950s Mach I Daimler Ferret 15 years ago. The open top command liaison vehicle carries two people, weighs four and a half tonnes, can travel about 95km/h running on a 100 horse power Rolls Royce engine, has the ability for machine gun mounting on top, has built-in smoke launchers and is protected by a shell of thick, ballistic steel. Sol, who runs the Dookie Emporium, said,

“I’m pretty nuts on military history and how their vehicles helped to shape the world. “It was one of the first military vehicles we got, but since then the collection has grown to include half a dozen more including Land Rovers. “The Mach I was the most highly produced. T here were 50,0 0 0 bu ilt worldwide. The Australian army had 300 of them during the Vietnam War, but they were never used. “These vehicles are actually still used today in some countries.”

TWO inspiring local mums are in training to take on Australia’s biggest charity run, where they will tackle seven marathons in seven states over seven days, in a bid to raise funds and awareness for Bravehearts to protect Aussie kids. The duo will join ‘children’s champions’ from across Australia to attempt 42km marathons in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Hobart, Canberra, Kingscliff from June 27 to July 3, with the event culminating at Australia’s largest marathon on the Gold Coast alongside more than 25,000 competitors. Narelle said, “I was searching for something we could do in 2016 and when I came across the Bravehearts 777, I expected Kathy to tell me I was crazy, but we were drawn to both the event and the cause and
we committed to it.” Kathy said it wasn’t just the challenge of running seven marathons in one week that appealed to them. “To run for a charity like Bravehearts adds depth to motivate and inspire us. “My boys are now 21 and 18 and every child should have the right to grow up feeling loved and protected.” Under their aptly named team, ‘Imagine, Believe, Achieve,’ the pair will raise $20,000 for Bravehearts. By David Lee CRICKET Australia has shown multicoloured support for Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation, holding a special Zaidee’s round of cricket recently and using bats with Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation grip. Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation CEO, Allan Turner said, “The last three years we have had Zaidees rainbow cricket groups and over the last four years have been the official charity members for Australian Cricket Association (ACA). “With that we get the support of the ACA cricket players, both men and women. “This kind of support helps to get the conversation happening around the importance of organ and tissue donation. Having the level of support we have from the most elite sporting athletes when representing Australia is a great message for us as a foundation. “Some players have kept the grip on their bats and we should see some players using the grip in the finals as well.”

TATURA Football Netball Club (TFNC) Senior Coach, Jamason Daniels last week announced he would be stepping down from his role and taking up a position offered by the Gold Coast Suns AFL team. Jamason advised the T F NC that during time recently spent with the Suns’ as part of his ongoing commitment to his T F NC coaching career, he was offered the opportunity to take on a development coaching role with them and to also captain the team’s ‘reserves,’ which competes in the North East Australian Football League. With Jamason’s departure the TFNC has announced two-time premiership player, Linc Wellington will take up the position of playing coach of the senior team for 2016. Jamason said the agonising decision to leave the TFNC was extremely difficult, not least of all because he considers the club part of his family. “My passion remains as strong as ever for the TFNC. The club has built a fantastic base for a successful 2016, which will follow well into the future.”
