Over the last twenty years when I have had the privilege of serving you as the Federal Member for Murray, I have often had to stand up, alone, to point out what has to be changed and I am proud to say there were many triumphs as well as very happy times. But like much of rural Australia, we still face enormous challenges. We have some of the highest youth unemployment anywhere, the threat to our water security remains and now some in the dairy industry are in great strife. The next member for Murray must also put the electorate first and always, even when this is a most difficult thing to do politically. This new Member for Murray must be smart, energetic, a local person, deeply committed and caring, someone with strong family values, who really wants to do this and understands exactly what it takes to move mountains. Duncan McGauchie, I believe has these qualities. I could not support him if he was merely a time server, drafted to fill a comfortable vacancy. Duncan, as a Liberal will also be inside the tent of Malcolm Turnbull’s government. That is where you need to be. Support Duncan with your vote to ensure we elect the right person to represent Murray.
For this region to prosper we need someone who understands industry and business. Someone who understands the role of transport in getting our product to market, and someone who sees the potential to make our city vibrant again. That person is Duncan McGauchie. Duncan has the commitment, energy and experience to get the job done. John Taig, Shepparton
Duncan McGauchie is a man of the land - a local from a farming family. He knows the importance of the agricultural sector and he knows that we can’t produce food without access to water. Duncan will fight to get our water back. He knows that when our farms thrive our community thrives – that’s why I’m backing Duncan. Don Oberin, Echuca
Murray must stay Liberal, and in our candidate Duncan McGauchie we have a talented young man who can continue the great work of Sharman Stone. Duncan has the background and experience to fight for our community at the highest levels. He grew up here, knows our issues and would make a fantastic representative for us in the Federal Parliament. Cheryl Hunter, Shepparton
Duncan will do whatever it takes for the best interest of the region – he is young and here for the long term. He has an amazing passion for the community and the determination to make a difference. He has experience and strengths in so many different areas, particularly in education to grow the opportunities for our children’s future. Linda Sali, Shepparton

Marked pears to become heroes Hailstorm damage no worry for local orchardists UP TO 2,000 tonnes of storm damaged pears from Plunkett’s Orchards group of orchards will make their way to supermarket shelves, as part of a Hailstorm Heroes initiative that aims to change the public’s perception on marked fruit. When two severe storms hit the region last year, a large percentage of pear crops were destroyed, but growers were able to save a
portion of crops with only superficial marks. In a bid to help hardworking growers salvage at least some return for this year’s harvest, the Australian pear industry teamed up with major Australian supermarkets to encourage Australians to show their support and purchase Continued on page 16 Hailstorm Heroes.

By Roger Key VA L E D o n M c C a f f r e y, b o r n i n Melbourne, educated in Brisbane as a veterinary surgeon, he spent 36 years of his working life in Shepparton where he endeared himself to the dairy farmers with his competence, efficiency and unfailing good humour, treating them to a new joke every visit, and caring for the smaller animals, and their owners, in his care with compassion and empathy. Outside of his busy practice, he was even busier, with a large social life of friends, actively playing football when young, then tennis, then golf, again with great friends. He found time to work on school committees, very effectively, first at Bouchier Street Primary, then full-bore into the promotion of a private school, on the founding committee and the board of what became the Goulburn Valley
Grammar School, then on the board of the school foundation, proudly seeing his children and grand children all being pupils there. He was in the small group of people who started a Prostate Care Lunch, now the Shepparton Biggest Blokes Lunch, which has raised so much money for prostate cancer research and support. With a small group of friends, for two years he spent every Wednesday travelling to the Marysville Area to rebuild fences and hopes for the people who had suffered from the devastating bushfires of 2009. But the most important part of his life has been his family, wife Jen, daughters Sarah (dec), Alexandra, and grandchildren Donald, Hugh and Elizabeth who enjoyed his love, warmth, enthusiasm and constant good humour. We will all miss him.

River precinct project progresses PLANS to develop a connected river precinct in central Shepparton have moved a step closer with design concept plans presented to a workshop of stakeholders recently. The Minister for Water, Hon. Lisa Neville committed $110,000 to complete the functional design stage of the Eastbank Lake Project, which will enhance the river precinct and provide recreational benefits for local residents. The precinct will provide a unique opportunity for Shepparton to embrace the Goulburn River and connect Shepparton through the creation of public open meeting spaces, parklands and a more welcoming and aesthetically pleasing gateway between Shepparton and Mooroopna. The working group comprises representatives from Goulburn Valley Water, Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority, Yorta Yorta Nation, Goulburn Valley Environment Group and Greater Shepparton City Council, with direction from Spiire. The project is the brainchild of businessman and former Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Geoff Dobson who has brought a working group together to tackle an aspirational project that will see environmental, social, cultural and economic gains for Greater Shepparton.

Are your materials honest? THE latest installation of the Shepparton Art Museum (SAM) Drawing Wall is now in place featuring artist, Simone Slee’s series of works investigating houses in suburban landscapes. Simone Slee works across installation, photography, video and performance. Slee sees this as a form of extended sculptural practice, investigating and questioning what sculpture is and what it can be. She has exhibited throughout Australia and internationally. She is currently the head of sculpture and spatial practice, in art, at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA), University of Melbourne where she has also completed a PhD. Slee is represented by Melbourne based gallery Sarah Scout Presents. For SAM’s Drawing Wall commission, Slee has focused on local Shepparton suburban architecture. The work is a continuation of her series, ‘Houses that are happy to help with at least one of the possible problems of art, 2010 – ongoing.’ Slee has created a series of new photographs of local architectural gems to which will be added to the series. in a suburban landscape. In front of each house, she poses the question “Are Your Materials Honest?” This question alludes to the shift that occurred in the early 20th century, where modernist architects rejected decorative effect and asserted a need for rigor and pared back form. The photographs invite the viewer to consider architectural styles and forms and question whether or not the materials themselves could be more than just ornamental. Visitors are welcome to come along and enjoy the latest installation of the SAM Drawing Wall at their leisure at the Eastbank Centre, Welsford Street, Shepparton.
Shining a positive light on social values A NEW research report carried out by La Trobe’s Centre for Sport and Social Impact (CSSI) has confirmed the true positive social value of Shepparton’s Rumbalara Football Netball Club and found for every $1 invested in cash, volunteer time and other resources to run the club, it generated at least $5.45 return in social value to the community Report author, La Trobe’s Professor Russell Hoye said Rumbalara’ is the only Aboriginal run community sport club in Victoria and the findings of the report are significant. “As an independent research group we wanted to test a new method of assessment of social value of a community football club and Rumbalara’ is such a great case study because of the variety of activities and range of impacts it has on the community,” Professor Hoye said. Findings from the study showed its strong value for individuals and the greater Shepparton population through increased social connectedness, wellbeing and mental health status of members and others in the community, employment outcomes for Indigenous members, personal development and improved fitness of those involved, wellbeing and pride amongst Indigenous community associated with the club and support for the delivery of non-sport programs for Indigenous communities in the greater Shepparton region. Professor Hoye said, “This club operates with cultural authority led by Indigenous leaders from the community. Because of this, it’s able to successfully engage at-risk groups and help support their education, employment and reduce the likelihood of substance abuse and social isolation.” Rumbalara Football Netball Club president, Paul Briggs OAM said the club is much more than a sports facility. “We offer community focused activities aimed at improving the mental and physical

wellbeing of the Indigenous population. Rumbalara’ has helped reduce youth suicide rates among our community and has helped individuals with their schooling and job placements. The club is also contributing to developing a generation of Indigenous leaders. “We had a view that we were doing a really good job and working really hard, we have put our reputation on the line for this public assessment. We were very pleased with the findings as well as comments from the Aboriginal Affairs Minister that she welcomes this report to be able to take back to her cabinet colleagues.” Professor Hoye said the La Trobe study shows the Rumbalara Football Netball Club is a model of a successful program that’s clearly improving the mental health and wellbeing of Indigenous Australians. “This is because it’s driven by the Indigenous community and built on the Indigenous values of family connection and culture. This type of club is something to celebrate and emulate. We hope these findings contribute to the league looking at supporting the development of more clubs like Rumbalara,” Professor Hoye said.

The Victorian Budget 2016/2017 is providing $3.3M to kick-start initiatives under a Victorian State Disability Plan including leadership scholarships for people with a disability, support for Changing Places to ensure public toilets are accessible and an economic strategy to improve participation in the workforce. Minister for Housing, Disability and Ageing, Martin Foley recently announced community consultation on the plan is about to get under way with it due to be in place by January 1, 2017. Martin said, “Victoria has a proud history of supporting those in our community who have a disability, but we need to do better and it is a responsibility we all share as a government, as businesses, as a community and as individuals.

Coonara: warming homes of the GV for over 20 years COONARA, the iconic name in wood heaters, has long been warming the homes of the Goulburn Valley, with GV Weathermaster selling and servicing the popular brands for near on 20 years. Doug and Annette Fowkes started GV Weathermaster in 1988 up the road from the business’ current location, teaming up with Shamic Sheetmetal. In the mid 1990s they secured Coonara to add to the great range of heaters manufactured by Shamic, namely Heatcharm and Arrow. Coonara has and continues to remain a solid selling product. GV Weathermaster director, Shane Sier said, “Coonara has been in the Goulburn Valley for a long time and return customers are evidence of the quality and performance of the range.” “From humble beginnings, Doug and Annette moved three times to settle at 70 Benalla Road and in conversation with them, they explain just how wonderful their landlords, namely Mr Tom and Jack Young (WH Young & Sons), were to them all those years ago, assisting them to obtain their desired location on the corner of Benalla Road and Fordyce Street, ‘the best spot in town’ according to Annette and Doug. “Today, the business has changed hands, but still offers the same

proven products and alongside the wonderful wood heater range is the gas log range. Be welcomed in the warm showroom with working models.” From 1988 GV Weathermaster has kept homes cool and warm with gas ducted, refrigerated ducted and split system air conditioning in the Goulburn Valley. Marked pears to become heroes continued from front page GOULBURN Valley pear grower and Plunkett Orchards co-owner, Andrew Plunkett said, “In a normal season, pears that do not meet our standards for sale are juiced,

which is usually about 200 tonnes of fruit. This year however, due to the storms, we had to juice more than 600 tonnes of fruit, which means this year’s crop will barely cover production and picking costs. “The Hailstorm Heroes initiative is good for getting the message across that things don’t have to look perfect in order to taste great. We’ve been conditioned to think that fruit has to look perfect in order for it to be acceptable to consume and that’s across all fruits, but it is not the case. “The pears were hit in their early stages of development, so the fruit has actually grown around the hailstone dents, which appear as small marks on the skin of the fruit. “The initiative is great to help growers find a home for marked fruit that would otherwise be sold at a cheaper price as ‘number twos’ or be juiced, which only provides orchards with about 10c per kilo. “While this year’s pears may not look like they normally do, they still taste the same and eat as well,” Mr Plunkett said. Hailstorm Heroes are now available in Woolworths (as part of ‘The Odd Bunch’ range), IGA and Aldi stores across Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland.
MARKED FRUIT IS STILL GOOD FRUIT… Plunkett Orchards co-owner, Andrew Plunkett with some of the pears that are part of the new Hailstorm Heroes initiative, which aims to change the public’s perception on marked fruit. Photo: Emma Hillier.

READY FOR CAMPING… Local resident, Steve Threlfall with his Toyota LandCruiser 100 series, which has been decked out with a brand new Evron DC4-single cab camper. Photos: Emma Hillier.
It just makes camping easy By Michael Eldred “IF you make camping easier, you’re more likely to go, and that’s exactly what this does,” said Steve Threlfall about his brand new Evron DC4-single cab camper. The camper is one of the best of its kind, housing a queen size bed, fridge, large storage area, hot water system, heater and a state-of-the-art electronics system. Solar panels are an optional extra, and Steve says that’s his next move. Though the camper has a wide range of features, it certainly doesn’t take anything away from its accessibility with a 10 to 15 minute set up time. Steve said, “The tent practically sets Page 18 – The Adviser. Australia No. 1:1307 Wednesday, June 15, 2016
itself up with the push of a button. It’s even got a remote to make life easier. “In the two weeks I’ve had it, I’ve already used it three to four times. “The actual car is a Toyota LandCruiser 100 series. All we did was cut off the back, extend the chassis by a meter and give it some new tyres. “The biggest reason I did this was so I can have all the functionality and accessibility, while still being able to tow a boat or motorbike trailer,” Steve said. “It’s just really easy. Normally when you think of going away you think it’s all too hard, but with this you just pack up and you’re away.”

Emma shoots for Olympics By David Lee LOCAL shotgun shooter, Emma Cox is shooting for the next Olympic Games, after taking away a gold medal at the International Shooting Sport Federation Shotgun World Cup in San Marino and beating the sport’s current world record holder, Corey Cogdell earlier this month. The 23-year old shooter, ranked 53rd in the world, scored 73 targets during the qualifications, and then cleared the semi-final with 12 hits out of 15 targets. To advance to the gold medal match, she made it through a three-way shootoff together with USA’s, Corey Cogdell, leaving China’s, Zhu Jingly in the bronze match with France’s Carole Comelier. Duelling for gold, Cox shot 13 targets out of 15, leaving the 2008 Olympic bronze medallist, Corey Cogdell in second place two clays behind her, with 11 hits. While she didn’t qualify for the Rio Olympic Games, Emma hopes that her efforts over the coming years will give her enough experience to be selected for the 2020 games. Emma said, “My day was pretty cool. I had no expectations. I just went and tried to shoot at my
best. “When I was shooting the final, I felt a little bit nervous to begin with, but I took it as it came. I tried to relax. “This is my first world cup gold. It’s great. “Scoring 73 was not only a personal best for me, but it is equal to the international and Australian record. Only one other girl has equalled that score. “If we had of been going by scores, I would have been going to Rio for the Olympic Games, but they picked on experience so unfortunately I missed out this time.” RETURNING WITH GOLD… Local resident, Emma Cox has just returned from the ISSF Shotgun World Cup in San Marino with a gold medal and aims to make it to the next Olympic Games. Hundreds converge on region for fifth sled dog classic HUNDREDS of people, and around 500 dogs, from across Australia converged on the Moira Park Scout Camp at the weekend, to take part in the fifth Northern Victorian Sled Dog Club (NVSDC) Classic. The ‘classic’ as it is better known, had previously run for 21 years as the Undera Sled Dog Dash, but was reborn and revitalised as the Northern Victorian Sled Dog Classic in 2012. The event is the largest dry land sled dog race in Australasia, attracting entries from Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, Canberra, Victoria and Tasmania. NVSDC president, Evette Levett said, “It’s the best year we’ve had in years for dogs. “This year saw the relatively new classes
for the ‘classic’ Bikejoring and Canicross prove popular. “Bikejoring is the sport where the musher rides behind a dog or team of dogs that are attached to the bike by a tow line. Canicross is the sport of running cross country while attached to a dog. Canicross, in particular, provides the opportunity for dogs not normally seen in the sledding scene to participate, such as entries this year, which included a West Highland White Terrier and a Jack Russell Terrier.” TAILS WAG FOR CLASSIC… Hundreds of competitors, their dogs and spectators converged on Kialla last week, to take part in the fifth annual Northern Victorian Sled Dog Club Classic. I N partnership with A FL Goulburn Murray, Valley Sport, Greater Shepparton City Council and Strathbogie Shire, local football netball clubs are taking up the opportunity to be part of the innovative Outside t he L ocker Room (OT L R) mentoring program. The program was hugely successful last season with a Bendigo Health partnership facilitating the program in all Goulburn Murray clubs in the Shire of Campaspe and a couple of pilot programs in Greater Shepparton City Council. In all, 2,297 participants attended the 56 sessions involving 16 football netball clubs in 2015. OTLR is a series of workshops and interactions focused on com munit y responsibility, responsible decision making and personal branding, with former AFL players, Glenn Manton and Jake Edwards. The program seeks to equip adolescent boys and girls and young adults, along with their parents, families and communities with the information and resources to better enable them to tackle the increasing number of social and mental health issues in a productive and non-destructive way. AFL Goulburn Murray Region general manager, Martin Gleeson is excited at bringing the program back to the region.
“We have been working with the OTLR team for over 12 months now and we were really impressed with the response from participants and clubs last year. “The feedback from footballers and netballers involved last year was extremely positive and we are also aware of a number of youth involved in the program who have gone on to receive support and assistance. “The program was able to create, not only an educational environment, but also one that made it comfortable for people to share their stories and to seek help if needed. “A key strategic priority of the AFL Goulburn Murray Commission’s Strategic Plan is community and through this priority a Health Services Strategy was released at the end of 2014. “This strategy focuses on the provision of services and initiatives recognising the integral place that football netball clubs hold in the community. “With Jake Edwards confirmed as the mentor for each club and the support of other ex-AFL players, behavioural experts and mental health experts each participant in the program will have a great opportunity to better understand themselves and make appropriate life decisions.”

I believe in the future of Murray This is why my wife and I have come home to raise our children with our family and friends. And this is why I am standing up to fight for this community in Parliament. After generations of hard work and investment, Murray now has access to export markets that will drive an economic boom for this region and benefit all of us. To unleash this potential we need to shape the national debate on water, agriculture and trade. And with growth we can improve our healthcare, our education and our communities.
This is the work I have done over my career in law and order, education, infrastructure and regional development. I know how governments and businesses make decisions and I have the experience to shape them. Murray has a great history of hard work and success. But we can have an even brighter future if we can work together to capture the opportunities available to us. This election is an opportunity to invest in the future of Murray.
I can get it done, I just need your vote.
