Major business excellence awards set to celebrate 25 years SHEPPARTON’S premier business awards, the Shepparton Chamber of Commerce and Industry White King / Pental Awards is set to return after being delayed due to COVID in 2020. The awards have seen 100s of businesses and individuals recognised over 25 years. A mid strength beer with a local connection

A pub that once had no beer now has its own label to celebrate its history By Steve Hutcheson THE Aussie Hotel on the corner of Fryer Street and Maude Street has a long history that dates back to 1895 when the streets of Shepparton were still unmade and the vehicles on the road were all being drawn by horses. Fifty years later, in 1944, Tom Phillips took ownership at a time

when beer was hard to get and when it was available, it was rationed to two bottles per man. Tom’s five boys and daughter ran the pub, serving the local farmers who had come in to sell their stock or wool clips or were down from Queensland to pick the fruit and had drifted into the pub to line up their beers before six o’clock closing. GOTAFE students sell to the public HOSPITALITY has taken a beating this past year and many in the industry across the region have lost staff as a result. In Shepparton, we have GOTAFE providing people looking for a hospitality vocation with the resources to get into the industry with qualification. A new $1.4 million paddock-to-plate café and restaurant funded by the State Government will give Shepparton students real-life training and help the region become a destination for Victorian foodies. Minister for Training and Skills, Gayle Tierney, officially opened Common Ground Café and Restaurant at GOTAFE Shepparton and met with local TAFE students to taste some of their culinary creations. “It’s exciting to see the improved hospitality facilities at GOTAFE – but more importantly how our investment in high quality and industry-based training is changing lives in Shepparton,” said Ms Tierney. This new facility includes an operational café that is open to the public and includes classrooms and multi- functional spaces that will support learning opportunities for barista, hospitality and cookery students.

Common Ground will help reinvigorate the Fryers Street campus with its must-eat menu of sustainable foods that also showcase the talents of students in other departments, including agriculture and baking. The new facility is the first stage of the $2.4 million GOTAFE upgrade and will be followed by the opening of

a $1 million commercial kitchen later this year, creating the Shepparton Commercial Kitchen and Learning Hub. It will eventually cater to 735 students annually and will ensure highly skilled graduates have a direct pathway to the workforce.

Using waste to make roads AS we consume more, we create more waste product and finding opportunities to reuse these materials becomes even more important. Greater Shepparton City Council has undertaken a trial of incorporating recycled glass and reclaimed asphalt pavement to renew part of Kialla Lakes Drive, Shepparton. The new trial method incorporated the use of recycled glass and reclaimed asphalt pavement amalgamating it into the asphalt base layer. Kialla Lakes Drive was chosen due to its condition and high traffic usage of over 7000 vehicles per day being a good test case. Greater Shepparton City Council Director

Infrastructure Phil Hoare said, “Council is excited about the new trial location for the recycled asphalt, the process is also very impressive with recycled materials being sorted, ground down and blended into the asphalt at the plant” Mr. Hoare said. “Incorporating recycled glass sand into the base layer makes sense, using a waste product, recycling it to renew a road it’s better for the environment. We are very keen to explore every option we have to increase recycling and reuse of waste products that would otherwise go to landfill it just make sense and is something we will expand,” Mr Hoare said.

Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide By Stephanie Holliday THE Federal Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel Darren Chester was in Shepparton last Tuesday as he urges the Goulburn Valley military community to ‘have your say’ on the Terms of Reference for the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide. On April 19 2021, the Prime Minister, the Hon Scott Morrison MP, announced the Government will recommend to the GovernorGeneral the establishment of a Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide. The Royal Commission is expected to examine the systemic issues and any common themes and past deaths by suicide of Australian Defence Force members and veterans and the experience of members and

veterans who may continue to be at risk of suicide. Mr Chester visited the electorate of Nicholls for two days as part of consultation with veterans, family members, service personnel and ex-service organisations. “The Member for Nicholls Damian Drum has invited me here to meet with veterans, Defence personnel and their families to discuss the Royal Commission and other significant issues,” said Mr Chester. “Damian has been active in promoting the interests of veterans and Defence personnel in his community and I look forward to listening to locals on this visit.” The Royal Commission is an opportunity to identify any weaknesses, listen to the ideas of Australians, and implement changes that can

Chambers survey shows total support for adjusted Mall THE design of the Maude Street Mall is near complete with some elements still in the pipeline, namely the area in front of the Telecom tower off Fraser Street. The Greater Shepparton Chamber of Commerce and Industry conducted a survey among the traders in Fraser Street, Maude Street, Fryers Street and Wyndham Street and found of the businesses they surveyed, 100 percent support for the currently planned siting of the playground to be relocated into open area in front of the tower. The traders along this stretch fully concur that they need the free flow and visual access of pedestrian traffic to be joined with the main Maude Street and not separated from it with the playground. The results of the Chamber survey found that: 100 percent of respondents believe a playground in the Mall/CBD to be necessary and 99 percent consider the considered the playground should be designed to suit children up to 5 years of age. 100 percent prefer the location of the playground to be further into Fraser Street rather than the proposed location. 100 percent of respondents consider

the Maude Street Mall should be redeveloped as part of the overall CBD masterplan. 100 percent of respondents would support the Council placing a temporary hold on the building of the playground until further consideration is made with regards to the best location. In summary, the Chamber is extremely keen to see the redevelopment of the Maude Street Mall to proceed without delay however see that with good planning of future car parks at the western end of Fraser Street this would create a pedestrian friendly promenade and visual accessibility to include Wyndham Street.

Aussies avoid dealing with the last stage of life OF the 160,000 Australian deaths recorded each year, more than 60 percent (100,000) are predictable, and can therefore, be planned for. Yet concerningly, less than one in six Australians (15 percent) have care plans in place for the last stage of life, and while 70 percent of Australian’s prefer to die at home, or in a home-like setting, currently less than 14 percent are doing so. “Australians on the whole, don’t talk openly about death and dying. The topic makes people uncomfortable,” said Professor Ken Hillman of The Violet Initiative Clinical Committee. “Currently, death and dying is highly medicalised. Often,

the preferences of the person in the latter stages of life are not acknowledged. Their priorities usually include a desire for personal care, safety, assurance, company, preservation of dignity, and a peaceful, pain-free death. Instead, health professionals focus on their own priorities, which are active medical management and attempting to cure.” Social entrepreneur and Violet CEO, Ms Melissa Reader, maintains caregivers are often the key influencers and decision makers, those able to drive critical conversations, and advocate for a plan that marries their loved one’s desires, with the reality of their situation.

Page 4 – The Adviser Australia No.1:1558 Wednesday, May 5, 2021

“Often caregivers and family members of those in the last stage of life feel uncertain, unprepared,“ Ms Reader said. “A "good” last stage of life would involve many more Australians having more compassionate and dignified deaths, with their preferences aligned with their experiences. Families and their caregivers would be offered relief, feel more resilient while going through this difficult experience, and in turn, would be able to return to life and work more fully.” If you are caring for someone in the last stage of life, or wish to learn more about The Violet Initiative and its service offering, head to www.violet.org.au

Call for volunteers By Stephanie Holliday IMAGINE not having enough food to feed yourself or your family, sadly for many people in our community, this is a reality. Food insecurity and disadvantage in Greater Shepparton is higher than the state average, according to Socio-Economic Indexes for Areas (SEIFA) 5.4% of people in our region have experienced food insecurity, compared to the state measure of 4.6%. Shepparton Foodshare is the only local service that rescues and receives donations of food to redistribute to those in ‘necessitous circumstances’ in the Goulburn Valley. Last year a record 380,000 kilos of food was collected from Foodshare by emergency relief agencies, schools and churches and distributed via school breakfast programs, community meals programs, food hampers and to individuals. Shepparton Foodshare runs on volunteers, the caring and dedicated volunteer team provide around 75% of the hours

required to operate the critical local service that provides food to registered agencies for the people they support. The local service is expanding its food rescue operations, and its team of volunteers, to keep up with demand for food relief six days a week. “We are grateful for all offers of support but what really need at the moment is volunteers who can contribute on a weekly basis and those that are capable of lifting and manual handling, are confident in representing Foodshare out in the community in our food rescue van and if they are licenced to operate a forklift it would be valuable however is not essential,” Shepparton Foodshare Operations Coordinator, Grace Grieve said. If you are community minded, love making a difference and have a spare 3 to 15 hours each week to volunteer, you can make a world of difference to those in need around us, including children. Volunteers undertake various functions from providing expertise on the skills-based Board to sorting and warehousing

$8M winter works package $8M of maintenance and capital works set to enhance the capacity of the region’s irrigation network will begin in midMay with the Goulburn-Murray Water’s (GMW) annual winter works program commencing. The program takes place each year during the irrigation shutdown period from 15 May to 14 August, with crucial maintenance works ensuring the network will continue to provide a reliable water supply during the irrigation season. Works this year will include the maintenance and desilting of channels at about 50 sites and weed spraying at about 24 sites to improve channel capacity; other maintenance works at about 20 sites, and construction at about 41 sites. The weed spraying portion of the works will include submerged aquatic weed control, spraying drains, and access and visibility spraying along channel banks and infrastructure, including pump stations, communication towers, outlets and regulators. GMW General Manager Infrastructure Delivery Services Warren Jose said the winter works program will be complete by early August to allow channels to be recharged and ready for the start of the 2021/22 irrigation season on 15 August.

“Works will vary from site to site and can include channel bank and gate repairs, bridge works, desilting and weed control works,” Mr Jose said. “As always, the safety of our staff, customers and the local community is the priority, and with a large winter works program scheduled for this year, safety will continue to be at the forefront of everything we do. “We ask the public to take care around any changes to traffic and road conditions near our work sites during this period.” In order to undertake the winter works program, GMW will drain sections of the channel network. This means some customers will not have access to water from the channel network and will need to make alternative arrangements for water supply during the non- irrigation period. Domestic and stock customers should fill their dam ahead of the end of the irrigation season to ensure they have water supply through winter. A map of channels that will be dewatered works being undertaken can be found at gmwater.com.au/winterworks or phone the GMW Customer Experience Team on 1800 013 357 for further information.

By Steve Hutcheson LAST week, the Federal Government Joint Standing Committee on Migration held a public hearing in Shepparton to investigate the challenges facing businesses and organisations that need to find and hire skilled migrants to fill job vacancies. While the report is some time into the future, there is a pressing need to look at what happens now with those migrants we have already in the country. Engineers Australia, the peak body for engineering put out a submission to the committee claiming, unless Australia’s skilled migration program is overhauled, and more support provided to migrants and employers, our nation’s engineering capability is at risk. “Certain visa classes require the holder to remain in a regional location for two to four years, yet most engineering roles are situated in metropolitan areas. With fewer suitable roles available, migrants can find themselves forced to take on employment out of their engineering occupation and may be lost to the profession forever,” said Engineers Australia CEO, Dr Bronwyn Evans. In a report from the committee for Economic Development of Australia looking at the contribution of permanent skilled migrants highlights the unrealised potential in newcomer communities and the need to provide income support and access to family tax benefits earlier

in the settlement journey, according to Australia’s largest refugee and migration resettlement support provider, Settlement Services International (SSI). Nearly a quarter of permanent skilled migrants in Australia are working in a job beneath their skill level, the Committee found in the report, which made a series of recommendations to improve outcomes for migrants and the economy. While there is a pressing need for semi-skilled migrant workers to pick fruit, there is a larger issue concerning professional skilled workers needed in areas such as health care and engineering.

A mid Major business excellence strength beer awards set to celebrate 25 years with a local connection continued from front page

continued from front page THE façade of the Hotel was grand, even in those days when heritage buildings abounded but behind the façade was perhaps less grand. A couple of bars run by the boys and an area out the back with a sand base fondly designated the beer garden where women could wait in the heat or the cold and drink a shandy. The bars in those days were men only affairs and the wives would send their kids in to get their dads while the barman gave the kids raspberry and crisps to delay them. The Phillips family ran the pub for 35 years, eventually selling it in 1979. It was due to this connection with the hotel that Paul Tsorbaris, the current owner, had the idea to have his own beer on tap that he named Phillips Lager. A mid strength beer that is full flavoured. Paul Phillips, the grandson of Tom maintains his connection with the industry running his own vintner business, Phillips Cellars, in Corio St. Over the years Paul Tsorbaris has taken the pub to a new level of excellence, undertaken major renovations of the building as any of his regular patrons would know since it is now one of the towns predominant meeting places.

Dear Editor Firstly, congratulations to Southern Riverina Irrigators and their chairman Chris Brooks for the way they are prepared to fight for our region’s future. It must be a lonely battle, because they don’t get much support from those who should be doing the fighting. What sought of help have they had from our Federal Member for Farrer Sussan Ley? In a nutshell, none. She has been our local member throughout the Murray-Darling Basin Plan disaster and has been totally ineffective in representing our interests.

Ou r new S enator Per i n Davey understands the issues being faced, but her leader Michael McCormack and fellow parliamentarian Keith Pitt (the present Water Minister), are hardly jumping out of their skins to support her or our region. As for the farming representative bodies, National Irrigators Council and NSW Irrigators Council, the less said the better. They seem more concerned with their political mates than our future. As a result, SRI has to ask landholders to dip into their pockets, yet again, just so it is able to fight the politicians and every other self-interested individual and organisation,

And for as long as we’re prepared to give the government a safe seat of Farrer, nothing will change. Perhaps that needs to be hammered home to those who keep voting for the same and watching as we get delivered the same, year after year. In the meantime, until we get a marginal seat or a local member and farming bodies who will genuinely fight for us, we have to do the fighting ourselves. So I would encourage everyone to make their contribution to SRI, as requested, so they can continue their good work.

I know it’s wrong that we should have to pay when others should be doing a lot of the heavy lifting for us. But that’s the reality we’re facing, so we just have to suck it up until our futures are secured. Yours faithfully, Laurie Beer Mayrung, NSW Want to have your say? Australians call to fund quality dementia care By Stephanie Holliday PROMINENT Australians including Prof Graeme Samuel AC, Ita Buttrose AC OBE, Denis Walter, The Veronicas and Abbie Chatfield have banded together with more than 200 Dementia Advocates to write to the Prime Minister ahead of next month’s Federal Budget. The letter calls on the Government to fund the ‘Roadmap for Quality Dementia Care’ developed by Dementia Australia with partners Dementia Training Australia and Dementia Support Australia. Professor Graeme Samuel AC, Chair of

Dementia Australia said that after twenty years of reviews and reports, now is the time for the Government to fund quality dementia care. The letter is written on behalf of the half a million Australians living with dementia and the 1.6 million people involved in their care. It describes the Government’s response to the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety’s final recommendations as a “once in a generation opportunity to commit to the funding and policy settings we need to deliver quality dementia care” and “an opportunity we cannot afford to miss”.

“We have written to the Prime Minster as a matter of urgency to ensure this once in a generation opportunity to transform dementia care and the aged care system overall is seized by the Government,” Prof Samuel said. “We expect a significant investment and transformation in the May budget that will make a profound difference to the experience of people affected by dementia – now and for generations to come. These reforms are well overdue.” The group calls for the urgent commitment to and implementation of Dementia Australia’s Roadmap for Quality Dementia Care which

has been presented to the Federal Government as a solution to the comprehensive reforms recommended by the Royal Commission. The Roadmap highlights the three key areas of transformation that, if adopted, will make a substantial difference to the delivery of quality dementia care for people impacted by dementia and ensure quality dementia care for all people living with dementia, their families and carers. These areas are: 1. Improving dementia support pathways 2. Building workforce capacity 3. Dementia-friendly design

A TOURER THAT DRAWS ATTENTION... Mark Gerbing from Rushworth with his 1929 Ford Model A Tourer. Photos: Steve Hutcheson

FROM MASS PRODUCTION TO CUSTOM BUILT By Steve Hutcheson ALMOST 100 years ago, the Ford Motor Company at its Dearborn, Michigan factory added to its mass production facility to make the Model A series of vehicles. A-Models were Ford’s second major success following the T-Model that had been in production for 18 years. The A-Model was in production from 1927 to 1932 where 4.8 million vehicles were produced to be superseded by the Model B. Originally built with a four-cylinder engine and a conventional unsynchronized three-speed manual sliding-gear with a single speed reverse gear. It is from this stable that lucky Rushworth resident, Mark Gerbing’s 1929 Ford Tourer originated and on its path towards being reincarnated at some later stage into the hot-rod it presently is. Long, a favourite of hot-rodders, the A-model adapted to engine and drive train transplants as well as customisation of the body to suit extra wide wheels. Marks acquired his Ford convertible around six months ago. It has a 382 Ford Windsor V8 motor developing over 200hp (149kW at 4,400 rpm) , automatic transmission with a popular nine-inch rear end. It was built by John Della and his wife from Lilydale. Page 20 – The Adviser Australia No.1:1558 Wednesday, May 5, 2021

MAKE MUM’S DAY… JB Jewellers business owners, Bozena and Jacek are happy to help you find the perfect gift for mum this Mother’s Day. Photo: Katelyn Morse

MOTHERS hold their children’s hands for a short while, but their hearts forever as the saying goes. A mother’s love is an incomparable type of love and finding the ability to express to our own mother’s and mother figures the gratitude we have for their sacrifice, guidance and compassion can be difficult. There are many ways we can try and demonstrate our appreciation on Mothers Day but a token they can keep for a lifetime, such as a beautiful piece of jewellery, is something they’ll cherish forever. For something unique and extra special,

Shepparton’s JB Jewellers offer their engraving services in addition to their wide range of jewellery, watches and giftware. The ability to transpose a photograph onto a pendant makes for an exquisite piece which can be passed down through generations. Master jewellers Bozena and Jacek, proprietors of JB Jewellers, offer a full range of services, being traditional jewellers, goldsmiths, engravers, valuers and gemmologists with a wealth of knowledge and experience available to their clients. Located at 265 Maude Street, they can be contacted on 5831 1611.

There is nothing that beats your loving hugs, Or emergency kiss surgery when I get scrapes and bumps. You are the best and mean the world to me, And I love how you just let me be me. It's funny when you laugh if I close my eyes and hide, But seeing your smile again when you find me warms me inside. I might say nan nan a lot but there is nobody I love more, And there is one big thing that I know for sure, You are a mum like no other.

Having not lost a home and away fixture since the end of 2015, the reigning premier has already lost twice in season 2021. Last weekend, the Bombers were taken down by one of the surprise packets of 2021. And, today they host the Saints. They know they can’t afford to give Kyabram a six-goal start like they did to Euroa. If they do that, then they will struggle. Tip: Kyabram

ROUND 7 SELECTIONS

ROCHESTER V MOOROOPNA This promises to be a really good game between two teams that want to figure in September. I believe the foundations for last weekend were set the week before against Echuca. On the other hand, the Cats are starting to really understand the game plan of new coach John Lamont. For mine, the team that can play

SHEPPARTON V SEYMOUR Seymour will be looking to make it 5-0 today when they travel to the home of where the grand final will be played. It will be a good opportunity for some the Lions to get familiar with the “D” where they hope to be playing in September. Tip: Seymour

EUROA V SWANS Euroa will be out to consolidate its place in the top six when its host the Shepparton Swans. The Magpies have only had the one slip-up this season – a narrow loss to Seymour. Tip: Euroa

This is a game between two evenly matched teams I believe. I have seen the Demons twice this season – both against quality opposition and the most noticeable Achilles heel appears to be the lack of key target in the forward line. Tip: United

four consistent quarters will win this game. Tip: Rochester

ROUND 7 SELECTIONS

Echuca look to be building nicely towards an assault on this year’s premiership. Many pundits had the Eagles finishing down the bottom this season. I believe the Eagles can push the Murray Bombers, but in the end the home team will get the points. Tip: Echuca

Netball Tips R6 EUROA V SWANS Both of these teams will be looking to bounce back and return to the winners’ circle after defeats in round five. The Swans were gallant before going down to the Cats while the Magpies suffered what some are saying was an upset at the hands of Benalla. I think the Magpies may have their work cut out. Tip: Swans

If they can again fire on the court today despite the best efforts , then the Demons should run away with a comfortable win. Tip: United

ROCHESTER V MOOROOPNA

Echuca had its bubble burst last weekend when beaten by the undefeated Shepparton United. Tip: Echuca

Rochester will go into this game full of confidence after a strong win over Tatura last weekend. It was the Tigers second win of the season, but today’s challenge will test them. They were challenge by the Swans and fought on in the last quarter to gain the upper hand and the four points. Tip: Mooroopna

UNITED V TATURA

SHEPPARTON V SEYMOUR

ECHUCA V MANSFIELD

United is flying and is yet to be defeated this campaign.

of the round between the reigning premier and a 2019 finalist. Both have three wins each and the Lions, although not the same team as the one that took all before them in 2019, will be a tough nut to crack, especially when they are at the top of their game. Tip: Seymour

KYABRAM V BENALLA In the remaining game, Benalla has a chance to back-up last weekend’s fantastic win with another victory when it hosts the winless Kyabram. The Saints were brilliant across the four quarters and stunned the Magpies. It is a win that can help build confidence and belief. Tip: Benall

This promises to be the match

Old cars gather for weekend of fun THE GV Hospice Rallye has once more taken shape on a beautiful weekend in the countryside. 47 vehicles ranging from the very old and very slow to the very new and very fast were registered to start carrying 127 people. The route was over 600km and took a couple of days along

with a number of refreshment stops on the way. The early part of the drive was flat Goulburn Valley country side and progressed into more scenic and hilly regions as it circled around Kyneton and onto Hepburn Springs for an overnight stop. A stop at Flowerdale Estate on the return trip saw the awarding of perpetual trophy to Murray and Jenny Yuille for

clean sheeting their rallye card along with a fund-raising raffle sponsored by the Prentice family, Tom Garrett and Central Tyres Service. Overall, the rallye produced $49,570 to be contributed to the GV Hospice.

Grants available for women in sport research

By Stephanie Holliday A NEW grant is helping researchers at universities across Victoria understand and ultimately break down the barriers facing women and girls in sport and active recreation. Minister for Community Sport, Ros Spence, today announced applications for this year’s round of the Change Our Game 2020-21 Research Grants Program are now open. “It’s important we build Victoria’s research capacity

around women and girls in sport and active recreation, to create better outcomes for everyone,” Ros Spence said. “We’re working with the smartest minds to find new and innovative ways to embed gender equality in sport, on and off the field.” Research grants of up to $25,000 per project are available to Victorian-based universities and universities may submit multiple applications for different projects. The program supports Victorian researchers to investigate, identify solutions, and play a leading role shaping and supporting inclusive sporting communities.

In 2020, Victoria University received a Change Our Game Research Grant to support a project which highlighted the importance of uniforms in making girls feel comfortable and more likely to participate in sport. The findings of this research have provided the sport and recreation sector with valuable insights into adolescent girls’ views on current sport uniform offerings and what types of uniform options they would prefer. Zero tolerance to swearing on the football field

IN an effort to stop on-field abuse, the GVA has taken a zero-tolerance approach to swearing. During the opening two rounds of football there have been 4 reports made for using or behaving in an abusive or obscene language on the field. Some either swear a lot or are slow learners. Goulburn Valley Football Umpires president, Andrew Moore, said, “These types of reports and actions are completely unacceptable on and off the football field and need to be stamped out. If these actions

continue, the already scarce umpiring numbers will continue to drop off.” Three of these reports have since been heard by tribunal, where players have believed to have been swearing, but not at the umpires, and the tribunal have supported their versions of events. As from now, GVFUA Umpires will be instructed to take a zero-tolerance approach towards swearing on the football field. For players who do, they face a free kick against them and a 50m penalty. There will be no warnings for these

errors of players and umpires will continue to make reports and use red and yellow cards where applicable to make sure the behaviour stops. Regional director of umpiring, Sam Wood, said “This move is one that will hopefully remove the grey area based around swearing and abuse and lead to a football environment that both umpires and players can enjoy.” This new zero tolerance approach will be implemented in every league from senior football down to Under 14’s. Senior players

need to realise the significance of their actions. The people who may witness these actions, for example junior kids, take these actions back to their junior competitions. They may feel justified in doing it because the senior players do it in their matches and it is deemed okay. It is not okay to be swearing at players or umpires on the field and this is a factor of the game that needs to change.
