More than 89,000 jabs in the region
PEOPLE IN THE GOULBURN VALLEY ARE BEING VACCINATED... More than 89,000 vaccinations have been delivered in the arms of local residents. Photo:Supplied
By Steve Hutcheson GV Health recently reached 50,000 jabs in their six vaccination sites across the region. At the same time, local doctors within the Murray Public Health Network have administered a further 39,000 jabs. This effort gives the region a good reason to feel more secure in the fight against Covid but it will only be when we get something like 80 percent of the population vaccinated that we can begin to see it fade away. The pandemic has taken hold of New South Wales in the past few weeks and since the state has been pushed into lockdown for at least for two weeks and maybe longer, the ramifications are likely to be dire for anyone
trying to do business on the other side of the border. Anyone above the age of 18 is now able to get vaccinated and if you can, you should. Like many people, I had my second shot of Astra Zeneca vaccine last week. The GV Health vaccination hub at the McIntosh Centre, Shepparton Showgrounds, Corner Thompson and High Street, remains open from 9am-4pm, Monday to Friday. The vaccination hub will extend its opening hours until 8pm every Tuesday until August 17 to enable eligible people to be vaccinated after office hours. In addition, the McIntosh Centre will open on Saturday August 21 from 9am to 4pm.

Snow bunnies on the hop WINTER lockdowns have made life bleak all around yet for the small group of students at Lemnos Primary School, it is time to make plans to hit the slopes. When the idea was first considered, principal, Kerry Miller, put it back to the children and set it as an authentic inquiry learning project about snow play, their research has enabled them to plan and coordinate a whole school field trip to the snow. The excursion first scheduled over a week ago was cancelled like many things however on Monday they
climbed aboard a bus and headed off to Mount Buffalo where for most, it was the first time they had seen real snow. “It has been exciting watching the children make the plans for the trip, everything from preparing introductory notes for hiring a bus and hiring snow clothes, to raising questions about snow, how it feels, is it cold and what sort of clothing they have to wear,” said Kerry. Reports from the snow suggests the kids all had a great day, sliding on toboggans, building snowmen and of course, having snowball fights.

By Stephanie Holliday THE Victorian Government, through a host of agencies including Regional Development Victoria, committed to making regional Victoria a great place to live, work and invest through a recent campaign. With a boost from initiatives, including the $20,000 regional first home owners grant and the $500M Regional Jobs and Infrastructure Fund, the aim was to entice metropolitan dwellers to make a tree or sea change. The premise being affordable housing, strong job prospects, access to health and education services, and the laid-back nature of a regional lifestyle are touted as the main drawcards, yet the reality locally is vastly different with the suitable housing options for young professionals, growing families and those trying to get ahead by moving out of the city in short supply. Lots of young families call Greater Shepparton home, with the proportion of couples with children almost three percent above the regional Victorian average. There are a multitude of educational options available in Greater Shepparton including GOTAFE (two campuses), University of Melbourne Rural Health Campus and Dookie Campus, La Trobe University, six secondary schools (including private schools and more on the horizon), 26 primary schools, 27 kindergartens and 15 long day care facilities and our region’s job prospects are bright. We certainly have the employment opportunities and education facilities drawcards but the lack of available rental and buying options in Greater Shepparton for families is just one indication of the promise of an easier lifestyle falling short of expectations. In order to support our growing population, the issue of suitable housing supply must be addressed.

Too lazy to do the right thing YOU will often see it around the country side and along the side of the roads, where people who have no social values dump their rubbish without any concern for anyone but themselves. In the pristine area around Arcadia Downs, some individuals have decided this is the best area for their rubbish rather than going through proper channels such as the municipal tip or scrap metal dealers. A local resident called The Adviser to say that during his walks over the last 12 months, someone or some people are
dumping all sorts of rubbish on the side of Raftery’s track which is off Raftery Road. And he said there is also rubbish being dumped at the end of River Road which is just past Arcadia Downs Drive. The rubbish consists of a car wreck, car engine, old fans, piles of roofing tiles, rolls of carpet, suit cases and all sorts of other stuff and it’s being added to. If you see or know of people dumping rubbish, report them to the police. The public space belongs to all of us, not just some useless individuals.

THE citizens of Tatura are the proud owners of a portable steam engine that previously stood in Apex Park, somewhere near the current Skatepark. The steam engine is a Clayton & Shuttleworth made in England in 1899. It was used for powering farm activities such as chaff cutting and water pumping. It was purchased by the late Mr Tom Flanagan for the town of Tatura in 1968 from Moyhu in North East, Victoria. Tatura residents Tom Flanagan, Harold Wilson and the Tatura Rotary Club arranged its transport, and it was placed in
Apex Park. It remained there until 2002, when for a variety of reasons, it was removed. A local steam buff kindly offered it a home where it has been ever since. A group of 12 interested citizens met recently and are actively seeking local knowledge for suggestions where the steam engine could now be proudly displayed and preserved for perpetuity. Please contact Peter LeSueur on 0412 402313 or Judy Forster 0408 241863, or email peter.le.sueur@bigpond.com with any suggestions, ideas or encouragement.

MEET branch manager Jenni and the GMCU Benalla-Strathbogie team. “We’re proud to bring expert knowledge, personal service and accessibility to our members. It’s important to us that we can provide this and create strong connections within our communities, while building relationships with members who don’t need to leave town to find professional assistance,” said Jenni. Jenni believes that local knowledge is important, and the Benalla-Strathbogie team is committed to understanding the needs of members, in line with GMCU’s purpose of unleashing what’s possible in our local communities. “Supporting local businesses, clubs, sporting teams and the arts is good for everyone, and we believe it goes a long way in making our region a great place to live,” she said. “When a local needs help with their banking, or if they’re looking to buy or build their dream home, to purchase an investment property or a new car, they shouldn’t need to sacrifice personal local service to do so,” Jenni says that’s what her team can offer. “Our doors are open in Benalla, Euroa & Violet Town and we’re only a phone call away, that’s what we’re here for.”
Pizza Hut site open for suggestions

MOST people who travel along Melbourne Rd near SAM would undoubtedly have seen the recent departure of the Pizza Hut building by demolishers. So, what is to happen on the site? That is what the owners are searching for. They are open to suggestions but being in such an ideal location, near SAM for starters, near to Victoria Lake and soon to be, traffic lights at the entry. What do you think might be a good use of the site? We have opened a post on our Facebook page looking for suggestions. We will print the best ideas in the paper next week. For anyone interested in doing something there, they can contact Glenn Young at Youngs and Co Real Estate in Wyndham Street Shepparton.

THE management at SPC have responded to comments made by the ACTU and the A M W U regarding their position on vaccinations for employees who work there. "We are very disappointed by the AMWU’s statement regarding our decision. We find several sections of their statement: • M i s l e a d i n g a n d l a c k i n g i n a n understanding of the union’s role versus business owners and directors • Designed to create fear and confusion among our employees and the broader community - the people they purport to represent • Aim to maintain the union’s relevancy rather than servicing its members • Ignore the advice from the World Health Organisation and other leading health organisations regarding the threat the Delta’s strain poses due to its transmissibility We firmly reject the AMWU’s assertion that they were not properly consulted in our vaccine mandate. This mandate is a business decision to ensure the safety of our staff as well as the broader community. It is the
responsibility of the directors of the business (who are also liable) to provide a safe working environment, not the union. We have consulted, and will always consult, with our local union officials in line with our Enterprise Agreement regarding the best way to implement our decision, not in the formation of our business’s decision. We will continue to take all necessary steps to ensure the safety of our people as we have throughout the pandemic. The assertion made by Australian Council of Trade Unions secretary Sally McManus that vaccinations are a “slippery slope” to businesses mandating medical procedures is unfounded. A number of Australian businesses have required their employees to be vaccinated, for example, the flu shot, and to provide evidence of such as a condition of their employment. This is nothing new and must be viewed in the context of the Delta strain of COVID-19 which poses a new and unique threat to the safety of our staff. Staff members who have genuine medical grounds that preclude them from being vaccinated against COVID-19 will be treated
with the utmost compassion. It is in fact for this small number of individuals that it is so critical that the rest of the workforce be vaccinated. Will the union guarantee our staff’s safety if an unvaccinated staff member, contractor or visitor infects our SPC family? Throughout the pandemic, we have prioritised the safety and wellbeing of our staff and Safety First remains one of our company’s primary values. SPC has met and continues to meet its obligations under the Work Health and Safety Act, and we will continue to align our practices with the Human Rights Act and Federal and State Discrimination Laws. The reception from the vast majority of our staff has been positive and we remain committed to working with both the union and our staff throughout this process. We are regularly speaking with our staff, offering them assistance as required and encouraging them to discuss their individual circumstances with their GP when making a decision regarding which vaccine is right for them. "

THE Hunter Boyle Children’s Swim Program has been announced as the official charity partner for the 2021 Campbell’s Shepparton Running Festival, which is scheduled to take place on August 21 and 22, 2021. The festival has something for all ages and abilities, with categories including a marathon, team marathon, half marathon, 10km run/walk, 7km trail run and 2km Kids Dash. Families and the youngest members of the community are encouraged to dress up as their favourite superhero and participate in this year’s RiverConnect 2km Kids Dash, which is dedicated to Hunter. On August 12, 2020, Ash Napolitano and Matt Boyle lost their beautiful 2-yearold boy, Hunter. Tragically, he drowned in a Grahamvale dam while visiting his grandfather’s farm. He was feeding the horses, when in an instant he went missing and was found unresponsive in the water a short time later. Hunter was rushed to Goulburn Valley
Health in Shepparton where doctors, nurses and members of The Royal Children's Hospital Piper Unit spent close to seven hours fighting to save his life. Devastatingly, Hunter couldn’t be saved. Ash and Matt have partnered with Kidsafe Victoria to help ensure that children in the Shepparton region who would not ordinarily have the means to access swimming lessons, are provided with the opportunity to learn these lifelong skills. The Program provides children with free swimming lessons for 12 months, water safety education and swimming accessories for them and their parents. It is supported by a number of local community organisations including the Greater Shepparton City Council, Aquamoves and The Bridge Youth Service. All festival participants are encouraged to donate, and funds raised from the festival will support the Hunter Boyle Children’s Swim Program to continue to provide free lifesaving swimming lessons and water safety education to children and families in need.

Seen any Brolgas on your farm? The GBCMA wants to know With only 250 Brolgas in northern Victoria and southern NSW, it’s always a thrill to see the magnificent birds in nature. These Brolgas were snapped at Moodie Swamp late last month. The photographer watched as the birds put on an impressive courtship display, which involved plenty of singing and dancing. Moodie Swamp is a favoured nesting site for Brolgas due to the abundance of Southern Canegrass in the swamp. As the Brolga is classified a vulnerable species, The Goulburn Broken CMA is

The GBCMA’s Jo Geddes said it was important to get a deeper understanding of the Brolgas’ movements and preferred sites. “A fuller understanding of their requirements helps us manage our environmental water sites to better suit their needs. “So, if you see a Brolga on you farm dam or anywhere on your property, please contact the Goulburn Broken CMA.” Jo Geddes 03 5822 7700

Jumping over barriers A MESSAGE from Jeremy Rensford, chair, Shepparton Ministers’ Association. WHAT brilliant viewing did the recent Olympic coverage make! As a long time basketball player and fan, I was pumped to see the Aussie men finally win a medal, and then straight after this see Nicola McDermott jump as high as any Boomer in winning the silver in the women’s high jump. Interestingly, she was very quick to thank Jesus and mention some very powerful memories from her difficult teenage years - “I was always an outcast and I got welcomed into a faith community that loved me”, “I thought of myself as a misfit” and “I remember encountering God’s love and it changed me.” It’s sad to see the unnecessary and unfair reaction from a minority to her online. In a time that should be reserved for Australians rejoicing, keyboard warriors have turned on her as a result of open proclamation of faith: “What the hell has faith got to do with sport?” and “An atheist won gold, why didn’t Jesus give you gold? and “Don’t share
your beliefs”. Despite the bad taste of these (there were many more; by the way what happened to the tolerance that we value as a society), they provoke some great questions: - Is faith in Jesus just so we can have everything go our way, kind of like a Santa Claus in the sky that grants our every wish? - Where is God when life is tough? - Do we need to keep our beliefs silent? What I’ve come to know of this God they question is that He welcomes questioning (is not insecure), He is there for those that are going through the worst of human experiences (Nicola’s personal experience epitomises this), God doesn’t guarantee a life without problems, but rather that He will be with us in and through the problems and that Christians beliefs should not be banned from public. As this column shows, Christian beliefs are worthy of discussion, debate and consideration in the public arena – a very practical faith as Nicola so fluently showed this week! As I observed a young lady at

peace with herself (finally) and at peace with God, despite her being an athletic superstar her story is totally relatable to the common person, a person that struggled with who they were until they came to personally know their creator. Maybe her story could become yours! May you jump over the barriers in front of you too in these most difficult of times.

HAVE you got a couple of old, unused mobile phones laying around? Recycling those mobile phones will help save the endangered Regent Honeyeater thanks to a special partnership with Landcare Australia and MobileMuster, Funds will be directed to a project restoring habitat for the critically endangered Regent Honeyeater in North Central Victoria. One of Australia’s rarest honeyeaters, they are a unique songbird on the verge of extinction with an estimated population of 800-2000. All brands of mobile phones, plus their batteries, chargers and accessories, are accepted and will be recycled safely and sustainably. MobileMuster provides a free mobile phone recycling program across
Australia, with thousands of drop-off locations or a post back option for easy recycling from home, especially during lockdown (satchels available online or from Australia Post and JB Hi-Fi). “The partnership with Landcare provides a perfect opportunity to declutter your home, while doubling the environmental benefits. Not only will you be supporting Landcare’s work saving the Regent Honeyeater but you’ll also help the planet by recovering and reusing valuable resources from your old mobiles and accessories,” head of MobileMuster Spyro Kalos said. The recent Tokyo Olympics highlighted how the materials in your old phone can be recovered and used again, with silver and gold from electronic waste being recycled to create the Olympic medals.

Harmony Village Shepparton offers quality independent living, residential and respite care in a peaceful setting, close to the heart of the town.
Description After visiting Harmony Village I discovered that it was once a privately owned facility functioning independently until Doutta Galla acquired the facility in 1997. DGAS continued to use its previous logo (pictured below) as future plans are in place to re-brand Harmony to follow the Doutta Galla brand in a more consistent nature. With these plans in place I took the liberty to keep the original Harmony flower leaving an appreciation of its origin, yet adding to the new look and feel of the rest of the DGAS facility Identities.

for his team to re-discover the form that had them sitting on top of the ladder until their loss to Mansfield on July 31. Tip: Seymour.
MOOROOPNA V KYABRAM This is easily the match of the round. Mooroopna has been outstanding through this lockdown period. They haven’t lost a game since the end of June. This will be one of their biggest tests against the league powerhouse of the last five seasons. If they can get the job done, it will take them a step closer to finals, with a game to come against ladder leader Echuca. The Cats won’t fear if they go behind early as they have shown in at least three or four games this year that they are capable of finishing strongly. The key is to not fall too far behind because if they do there will be no miracle comebacks today. Tip: Kyabram.
TATURA V ECHUCA Echuca has been my tip all long in 2021. And, now they sit in the box seat to claim the minor premiership with two games to go, including one at Tatura Park. The Bulldogs will be desperate to finish the season off strongly. The Green Machine, like all clubs have been impacted by the Melbourne lockdown, but will now be further impacted by the NSW shutdown. Unfortunately, some of there players won’t be available due to residing in NSW. So, the Green Machine will look to its juniors and reserves to fill the void. Tip: Echuca.
netball Tips Benalla will be looking to keep its flickering finals aspirations alive when it travels to Shepparton to take top of the table United. The Saints, minus a couple of key players due to the lockdown, missed an opportunity to leapfrog Tatura into the top six last weekend. I think they will prove far too strong for the visiting Saints, therefore ending their slim finals aspirations for 2021. Tip: United.
BRADLEY CAMPBELL 193B Corio St, Shepparton
Euroa will be looking to continue its charge up the ladder when it plays host to Shepparton. Coach Scott Rowan would be extremely proud of the troops last weekend. It was always going to be a danger game and they overcame the challenge of the Eagles. If they can continue that form, I think they can get the win and retain a top two spot on the ladder heading into the final round. Tip: Euroa.

What a game this promises to be! A win for the Tigers and they qualify for the finals. While a defeat and they drop out of the top six if results don’t fall in their favour. Mansfield was unable to go with Euroa last weekend in a game where both were missing several of their best 21. Tip: Rochester.

ROUND 22 SELECTIONS
Benalla knows every game is a mini final in its quest to climb into the top six. The Saints made a strong statement with their win last weekend and actually sat in the top six at 4.30pm, but they were pushed out half-an-hour later by a late goal that allowed Mooroopna to climb into sixth spot. Tip: Benalla.

Football Tips
SEYMOUR V SWANS This should be a fantastic game of netball and one that will tell us a lot about what these two teams will be capable of during the finals. If Seymour can get some early momentum and apply some scoreboard pressure, they can avoid a second straight defeat while the Swans will be looking to bounce out of the blocks after a lacklustre first half last weekend. Tip: Seymour.
EUROA V SHEPPARTON The stakes are high for both Euroa and Shepparton. For the winner, it remains alive in the race to play finals while for the loser it will be curtains. Euroa produced an inspiring performance to get over the line last week against the Eagles thanks to the efforts of Bec Bath while Eliza Hoare and Zara Hinss stood up in the centre and goals!
If they can repeat those efforts then the Pies just may be able to dare to dream. Tip: Shepparton.
ROCHESTER V MANSFIELD Rochester will be looking to finish off its 2021 campaign with a win before it signs off. It came very close last weekend when it pushed the finals bound Shepparton Swans all the way. The Eagles was competitive in pushing a depleted Euroa all the way last weekend only to go down by three goals. Tip: Rochester.
TATURA V ECHUCA Tatura is clinging onto sixth place as we head in to the second last round of the home and away competition. It currently is a game clear of Euroa and six points clear of Benalla and Shepparton after its important win over the Saints last weekend. Tip: Echuca.
MOOROOPNA V KYABRAM Mooroopna is tuning up for the finals and this will be another opportunity for them against Kyabram. Tip: Mooroopna.

Heading into a centenary year with 1000 members NEXT April, the Shepparton Golf Club will celebrate its centenary and preparations are underway to make it a spectacular season for golfers in Shepparton. The club has also recently surpassed 1,000 members which according to Russ Powell the general manager at the club, has taken hard work for 100 years to get there. The club started in 1922 a few years after the Great War ended and the township of Shepparton was no more than a several hundred people with many returning soldiers taking up soldier settlements being offered by the government. Over time, the club has continually improved and is now in the top 100 clubs in Australia according to Golf Digest. Amongst the players is up and coming pro golfer, 25 year old Kyle Michel, while the current club champion is 15 year old, Bailey Goodall. The club has a long history as it played a role in the development of Shepparton and the centenary will bring a lot of that to the fore as the year unfolds.
