A GENEROUS DONATION TO SUPPORT THE NEEDY... Standing in front of the Foodshare van, CEO of greater Shepparton Foundation, Cheryl Hammer, philanthropist and local businessman, Peter Copulos, and Shepparton Foodshare coordinator, Grace Grieve. Photo: Steve Hutcheson

IT is depressing to hear so many people in the region are dependent upon assistance in putting food on the table yet, the pandemic has brought us to this point. Foodshare, serves up the equivalent of thousands of meals each week and has an increasing need for support. This week, the organisation has received $50,000 in donations, half of that, $25,000 from Peter and Stephen Copulos with $20,000 also provided by the Fairley Foundation and another $5,000 as an anonymous donation. Peter Copulos and his family have been strong philanthropists to many causes in the region and this week is no different. “We have been supporting local charities for the last forty years and it gives me great pleasure to be able to donate to Foodshare to support our community in time of need,” said

Peter. Peter has lived in Shepparton since 1948 when his family came to do farming, eventually moving into property development in Shepparton and across Australia. Cheryl Hammer, CEO at the Greater Shepparton Foundation said, “These ph i la nt h ropists approached Greater Shepparton Foundation (GSF) about giving to the community during the recent COVID crisis and we were able to identify the work Shepparton Foodshare is doing and nominated them to be the beneficiary of the funds.” Notwithstanding these very generous donations, Foodshare is always looking for support and can be reached at 0432 517 329 or by email info@sheppartonfoodshare.org.au

Door-to-door solar sales now banned THE Victorian Government has banned door-to-door sales across all Solar Victoria programs in a bid to crackdown on dodgy sales tactics. The ban came into force last week and will not affect consumer access to solar systems. Solar Victoria engaged with peak bodies and retailers on a prohibition with industry strongly supporting the ban and given almost four-months' notice before it officially commenced. The Government is encouraging all Victorians to stay informed about their consumer rights and to report dodgy behaviour or safety concerns. Only accredited, approved retailers and products can be used in any installation,

installers must undertake mandatory training and an independent inspector needs to sign off on system safety. Victoria is setting nation-leading standards to protect consumers who purchase a solar system, having mandated the Clean Energy Council’s Approved Solar Retailer code of conduct alongside an audit program, taskforces and compliance and enforcement partnerships with key regulators including Consumer Affairs Victoria. Questionable sales behaviour can be reported to Consumer Affairs Victoria at consumer.vic.gov.au/contact-us and scamwatch.gov.au which is run by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

"People are reporting the burden of home-schooling, on-going pressu res of working from home, communication breakdowns and the immense financial pressures that are associated with the pandemic," said Angela Harbinson, CEO and co-founder of The Separation Guide. Australia as the clever country By Steve Hutcheson AUSTRALIA has the opportunity to be well positioned for its priority industries to become globally competitive exporters by leveraging the innovation assets that the technology industry has to offer. Through almost 80 detailed recommendations in its latest white paper, the Australian Information Industry Association is urging the Federal Government to accelerate the digitisation of Australian industry or run the real risk of going from producers to consumers in some of our key industry sectors. Failing to do so will also result in Australia not meeting The Prime Minister’s 2030 targets to become a leading digital economy. Political leaders are looking at ways to improve our

manufacturing capabilities and less dependence on imports but as we move forward, society is going to become increasingly dependent on the development of new technology. We don’t know what we don’t know at this point in time. Agriculture Technology for instance is set to become Australia’s next $100B industry by 2030, yet only low-level investment in this area is reflected in the 2021- 2022 Federal Budget and is almost completely missing from the Agriculture Strategy 2030. Australia must invest in its core and strategic industries to remain competitive. As we look at the advance in the use of solar power, Australia was once an early technical leader in this field yet the lack of government support at that stage saw the technology move offshore and we now import almost all components required for it.

Recognising that digitising the economy is critical to our national success there are steps the Government needs to take now to ensure we remain a producer and not simply a consumer.

Temporary Migration report tabled in the Senate

By Steve Hutcheson LOOKING ahead at a need to solve the labour issues for the coming picking season, the Federal Government, Senate Select Committee on Temporary Migration has tabled a report to parliament making 40 recommendations for reform aimed at protecting vulnerable temporary visa holders. The National Party has recently proposed an amendment to the current Visa requirements for temporary workers. The committee received 131 submissions from individuals and organisations in reaching its conclusions. The recommendations included: • Significantly increasing the resources provided to the Department of Home Affairs to improve visa application assessment times

• The abolition of the 88-day farm work requirement of the Working Holiday Maker program • Increasing Australia's quarantine capacity for the inclusion of seasonal workers • Improving the flexibility of the Seasonal Worker Programme to allow greater engagement of people from the Pacific region and Timor-Leste in agriculture specific work • Banning employers who exploit workers from employing temporary visa holders • Significantly increasing the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold to restore fairness to Australia's skilled shortage by protecting local workers • Providing protections to those temporary visa workers who report exploitation

• Establishing a small-claims tribunal to resolve wage theft disputes • Holding franchisors financially responsible for the underpayment of employees by franchisees A copy of the report and more details about the inquiry are available on the committee's website. In delivering the report to the Senate, Senator Raf Ciccone said, "We've heard of farmers struggling to access the labour they need to meet their demands in harvest periods and of their frustration in navigating visa programmes and the bureaucracy surrounding Australia's various labour schemes. "In these submissions we heard stories from those with all manner of life experiences—but there is one story that runs true through almost

every one of them and that is the story of a broken system that is failing to deliver for those that need it to. "Mr President, over the course of the past two years we've heard of temporary visa worker exploitation, wage theft, physical abuse and sexual harassment. "We've heard of visa assessment times stretching into not just the months, but the years. Of a systemic lack of communication from the Department of Home Affairs with visa applicants. "Temporary migration has a role to play in areas where we cannot skill up enough Australians quickly to meet demand. That is why we need to reset our migration program to meet the unprecedented economic challenges we are currently facing."

Firewood collection season now open Illegal firewood collection has negative impacts on forest health, wildlife habitat and the sustainability of firewood resources that local communities rely on. THE Spring Firewood collection season has opened as of last week and will run until Tuesday November 30. Under the current restrictions, if firewood is essential for home heating or cooking, people can travel to the closest designated firewood collection area as long as physical distancing requirements are followed. “It’s important that people only collect firewood from designated collection areas in State forests or parks where collection is allowed and stay within collection limits,” Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) deputy chief fire officer, Aaron Kennedy said. “You may collect up to two cubic metres of firewood per person per day, and up to 16 cubic metres per household per year. This prevents households stockpiling large volumes of firewood and denying others a supply. “Firewood collection from roadsides is

New generations Qfly mate at sunset as long as temperatures at dusk are above about 16˚C. Sunset temperatures have been high enough in the areas of Shepparton and Tatura in August for mating to occur. Extra precautions are recommended for these areas.

Trapping information and activity The Goulburn Murray Valley fruit fly trapping grid is used to identify likely spring hot spots, where and when Qfly management activities can be implemented and how effective management programs are performing. Past activity is an important trigger for increased monitoring and control. Data from the regional fruit fly trapping grid has been examined to identify areas where fruit fly activity was located in recent years. The following areas recorded fruit fly activity in August and September in recent years through the regional trapping grid and require extra vigilance: • E u r oa • Katamatite • Kyabram • Merrig um • Mooroopna • N u m u r k ah • Shepparton • Tatura • Strathmerton • Tong ala • Yarrawong a

Fruit fly numbers are expected to increase in September as adult flies that survived winter become active as the weather warms up. Fruit that is ripening or ripe nearby may become infested with the new season’s fruit fly generation, so it’s important to pick up or harvest and destroy all unwanted fruit at this time of year. Queensland fruit fly (Qfly) will start to increase in numbers and are expected to be trapped earlier in urban locations than peri-urban and rural areas. It is recommended urban householders clean up unwanted fruit, monitor for Qfly presence and, if needed, carry out fruit fly control practices. It is suggested all home gardeners growing fruit and vegetables start building a supply of traps, nets and pesticides approved for home garden use and begin fruit fly management programs such as:

Sheed’s homecoming for domestic tourists While my office was able to help some residents with exceptional cases to return, we have many more who left to travel in their caravans when they were entitled to and now find themselves locked out of their own state. Suzanna Sheed MP LOCALS who were enjoying freedom and travelling interstate months and weeks ago have since found themselves stranded with no safe pathway home. Independent Member for Shepparton District, Suzanna Sheed, is petitioning the State Government to make safe passage possible for Victorians locked out due to COVID-19 restrictions. “While my office was able to help some residents with exceptional cases to return, we have many more who left to travel in their caravans when they were entitled to and now find themselves locked out of their own state. “Many of these travellers are over the age of 60, were first in line to receive their

Ms Sheed said that increasing the timeframe of travel exemptions to 36 hours to permit solo or senior travellers to get home would be the safest and most effective way for residents to return.

I’m walking on sunshine By Stephanie Holliday SHEPPARTON and surrounding towns had a bout of beautiful weather last week, with plenty of sunshine and warmer temperatures. Despite still being in lockdown, last Wednesday there were locals lapping up the rays around Victoria Park Lake during their permitted exercise time. Noah Joksimovic celebrated his second birthday and enjoyed a ride around the lake with brother Lucas Joksimovic and dad Petar Joksimovic.

“This weather is wonderful. It’s a great opportunity for kids to get some sunshine and fresh air. We are hopeful that restrictions on playgrounds lift soon, but in the meantime this is a nice alternative,” said Petar. “Noah also celebrated his first birthday in lockdown but we are making his day as special as possible given the circumstances.” The Adviser wishes Noah and the many other children who have celebrated during lockdowns very happy birthdays.

They’re not cherry blossoms SPRING is here and around the Goulburn Valley trees are in full bloom. There is a particular tree however that looks lovely but emits a pungent odour in spring. Often mistaken for cherry blossoms, which smell pleasant, the tree in question is the Pyrus Calleryana, or the Callery pear. The main street of Tatura is lined with them. In summer, the shining leaves are a lush dark green and very smooth, in autumn the leaves turn shades of yellow, orange, red and bronze and in spring they are flourished with white flowers. The scent they produce in spring attracts flies to spread their pollen and ward off pollen-stealing insects. These scents are known as ‘volatile amines’, which means they're molecularly similar to ammonia. In the case of the Callery pear, what you're smelling is trimethylamine and dimethylamine, which smell similar to ammonia.

CALLERY PEAR TREES... They may look pretty but they don’t smell the best. Photo: Stephanie Holliday

Rare as hen’s teeth. This commercial premises consists of three adjoining shops centrally located in the sought after High Street Echuca precinct opposite the Port of Echuca. The three shops are currently tenanted and the freehold is an excellent investment opportunity for the buyer. The property has a very wide frontage and the freehold has a long standing reputation in the market. In summary this is an opportunity which will surely not be repeated for a long period.

The species of tree is native to China and Vietnam and they were commonly planted in new developments in Australia during the 1950s and 1960s due to being remarkably resistant to disease, inexpensive, their appearance and how quickly they grow. In other countries such as the USA, they are considered an invasive species. Thankfully the scent doesn’t take too long to dissipate as quite soon the blooms will be replaced with the bright green leaves of summer.

Small business software boost SMALL businesses in Victoria will be given the chance to improve their online presence and improve digital skills, with the ‘Small Business Digital Adaptation Program’ reopening for applications. The program provides $1,200 rebates so small businesses can access a range of digital business tools to make improvements to things like websites, online marketing tools, cash flow services, jobs and project management and stocktake systems. To support Victorian businesses during the

current lockdown and beyond, the program has been extended. As part of the program, software providers will give businesses access to product-specific support and training during the trial period. Once the trial period has finished, businesses can then use one or more of the digital products listed as part of the program and apply for a rebate of up to $1,200, while continuing to receive product support and advice. Software applications offered by Mr

Yum, Square, Shopify, MYOB, XERO and Squarespace are some of the resources on offer as part of the program. Businesses will also be able to participate in free digital workshops offered through Small Business Victoria. The first round of the program was launched in November 2020 and more than 8,000 successful applications were received. Applications for the second round of the Small Business Digital Adaptation Program will close on 5 December 2021. For more information, visit business.vic.gov.au.

Giving kinder the tick THE Labor Government is making it easier for parents and carers to find quality kindergarten programs through the 'Kinder Tick' initiative. The new initiative, being rolled out across Victoria, makes it easier for families to identify approved and funded kindergarten programs to help ensure their children are attending the best program available. Signage will be placed on services that deliver

kindergarten programs, whether that’s in a long daycare setting or a standalone kinder. Only services that are led by a qualified teacher, provide a play-based learning program and are funded by the Victorian Government will be eligible to use the kinder tick. Research shows that having qualified teachers and educators plan, deliver and evaluate play-based kindergarten programs leads to better outcomes for children.

This will mean families can be assured that if they see the 'Kinder Tick' branding, it means that facility is endorsed by the Victorian Government as a good quality service. Long day care centres make up more than a third of services already delivering universal funded Three-Year-Old Kindergarten and together with standalone kinders are an important part of the early learning sector.

Exciting new changes for 2022 We will also make an exciting announcement on some changes to the competition in season 2022 Mark Lambourn SHEPPARTON Toyota District Junior Football League has officially cancelled the remainder of a season for the second year in succession but is already looking to some exciting new changes in 2022. The board decided they could no longer entertain salvaging the season due to prolonged restrictions and risk to players, parents, coaches, and volunteers.

STDJFL president Mark Lambourn said the board had made the decision to announce minor premiers across the Keating Transport Under 16 and Youth Girls competitions as well as the Brokerhouse Under 14 competitions. Shepparton United JFC (Youth Girls), Moama JFC (Under 16s) and Shepparton Swans JFC (Under 14s) were all on top of their respective competition tables. These teams, along with a host of award recipients, will be recognised for their achievements in a special Acknowledgement Night, to be held online on Wednesday, September 22. The Acknowledgement Night will be a virtual meeting, not just thanking the clubs

themselves but individual award category leaders, sponsors, and volunteers. “It’s been another stop-start year and we can only congratulate everyone involved for staying the course and their hard work and commitment to junior football,’’ Mr Lambourn said. “ We w i l l a l so m a ke a n exc it i ng announcement on some changes to the

competition in season 2022 which keeps us looking forward. One thing that the interruptions have caused us to do, as a board is to look at the bigger picture of our sport and along with our values and strategic plan, to decide what’s going to be best long term. “We are still finalising some of these plans and hopefully be able to make some big announcements in mid-September,’’ he added.

A CLASSIC IN ITS DAY... Named the Buick Century for its ability to cruise at 100 mph. Photos: Steve Hutcheson

Cruisin’on a ton THE first Buick Century debuted in 1936 as a shorter and lighter model featuring the same engine as the bigger Roadmaster and Limited series giving it more performance and the 1955 model was known by many as the 'hot rod' Buick. The Series 60 Century model had the same wheelbase and

body as the lower-priced Special series, but with added trim, amenities and the higher horsepower Roadmaster engine signified by a fourth ‘port hole’. The model's name came about with Buick's first 1936 Century model, named for its ability to cruise at 100 mph, (161 km/hr)

A favourite cops and robbers TV show of the 1950s, Highway Patrol, starring Broderick Crawford, also immortalised the Buick Century. Crawford often drove the Buick Century 'Black and Whites' in the show. The Buick Century will be on display at MOVE when it opens.
