Saved by JobKeeper A REPORT by the Commonwealth Treasury has confirmed that the JobKeeper program successfully safeguarded the Australian economy during the “biggest economic shock since the Great Depression.” Fou r m i l l ion Aust ra l ia ns a nd 1M businesses were assisted through JobKeeper p ay m e nt s , w h i c h we r e t a r g e t e d to assist businesses strongly affected by the pandemic, businesses at substantial risk of

shedding employees, sectors hit by public health restrictions, small businesses, and not-for-profits. Ninety-nine percent of entities receiving JobKeeper had an annual turnover of less than $50M or were not-for-profit organisations, and 99 percent of businesses who experienced a significant 30-50 percent decline in turnover were small businesses, with an average of four supported employees.

NATIONAL Water Week makes a splash across Australia from now until Sunday. Goulburn Valley Water has teamed up with the Department of Environment Land Water and Planning and water organisations from around the state to provide exciting online educational experiences for this year’s National Water Week. ‘Explore your Backyard’ is an online learning festival celebrating and nurturing our connection to Country and water during National Water Week. Goulburn Valley Water Managing Director Steve Capewell said the festival will focus on water efficiency and exploring nature in the local area – whether it be a local waterway, vegie patch or a balcony garden. “The activities and events have been designed to suit a range of ages, interests, topics and learning goals and can be accessed from home or classrooms,” Dr Capewell said. “We hope participants have a bit of fun, learn something new and enjoy exploring their backyard.” The event will be launched by Costa the Garden Gnome, with an exclusive Facebook Live chat at 4pm on Sunday 17 October. It will then continue through to 24 October. The festival will also feature live webinars, on-demand workshops, tours, videos, and resources, all designed to get everyone outside and using water efficiently. Treasury said, “A central consideration in designing the macroeconomic support

package was ensuring the overall level of fiscal support was sufficient to provide a credible offset to the economic shock being experienced.” The report on the first six months of JobKeeper demonstrates that the program did what it was intended to do, keeping employers and employees connected, saving hundreds-of-thousands of jobs and supporting Australia’s world-leading economy to get back to business. Our nation stands in silent reflection for one minute each year to commemorate and honour those Australians who have died or suffered in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. The Department of Veterans’ Affairs has prepared a Remembrance Day educational resources pack or ‘digital kitbag’ to highlight the importance of honouring Australia’s veterans and servicemen and women. Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel Andrew Gee said the Remembrance Day pack includes a range of commemorative and educational resources about Australia’s military history. “ T h e Au s t r a l i a n G ove r n m e nt i s committed to recognising the men and women who have served and sacrificed for our nation. It is crucial to foster this tradition of recognition in order to teach our children the importance of Remembrance Day and honouring the service and sacrifice of all our veterans in a respectful and dignified manner,” Minister Gee said. Roll over warning getting serious ROLL BARS have been made mandatory on all new and imported second-hand quad bikes being sold, in a bid to ensure greater rider safety on all-terrain vehicles (ATVs). As of September, there have been six quad bike fatalities in Australia during 2021. From October 11, it became illegal to sell a new or used quad bike without fitting a rollover protection device to reduce life threatening injuries. ATVs will also require warning stickers informing the degree of slope at which they overturn. There are, however, no laws mandating that quad bikes already in the garage or the paddock must have roll bars fitted. This is a big win for safety advocates, but a blow for dealers who face big fines for not complying with regulations. Many of which

have argued that the new laws will not resolve safety issues since old equipment will continue to be used on farms, and reckless rider behaviour is largely to blame for the prevalence of ATV accidents. Victorian Farmers Federation president, Emma Germano said quad bike rollovers were a leading cause of trauma and death on Victorian farms. "Since 2011 sadly 150 people have died from quad bike accidents nationally, 23 of those were children," she said. 2020 had the highest annual death toll, with 24 fatalities due to quad bike accidents. The biggest cause of death was crushing and asphyxiation when a quad bike rolled on top of someone. Most quad bikes weigh up to 350 kilograms.

Fruit fly activity A peak in the number of Queensland fruit fly (Qfly) trapped and recorded in August and September reflects the number of flies that successfully survived winter by sheltering in warm refuges. Now active, these flies are ready to mate and start laying eggs into fruit. Ripe or ripening fruit is at risk of being infested and extra care should be taken to monitor and inspect fruit growing in home gardens. Spring infestations will be the first 2021/22 generation of Qfly to attack urban and rural fruiting plants in December through to the middle of May.

Trapping data taken over a number of years has identified, it is very likely that urban fruit fly spread from built up urban areas, through peri-urban locations and into rural commercial orchards. Since GV Health launched ‘Get the Jab Done’ last week to vaccinate the 5,000 eligible people who had not received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccination, 2,482 people have had their first dose. WILDLIFE biologists have taken to the skies to try to understand and record game duck populations in Victoria. This is the second aerial duck survey, conducted by the Game Management Authority (GMA), used to monitor the abundance of game duck populations on waterbodies across the state. Satellite imaging is used to determine how much water is in the landscape, which will inform an estimate of the total abundance of each game duck species. GMA chief executive officer, Graeme Ford said this is the largest and most comprehensive survey of game ducks undertaken in Victoria. “The aerial survey was conducted for the first time in 2020, as part of a pilot to test the monitoring program design and evaluate its effectiveness to count duck numbers on

Victorian waterbodies,” Mr Ford said. “An evaluation of the first survey has since found that the methodology for conducting the surveys was robust, and that the data collected is viable.” “In addition to the 2020 monitoring programme, which surveyed wetlands, sewerage ponds and farm dams, we will now also be surveying irrigation channels, creeks and rivers.” “Results from this research give us a better understanding of game duck populations and will be used in the future to help inform adaptive harvest management to set sustainable duck season arrangements.” The 2021 survey is subject to weather conditions and other delays, but is set to take place from Monday, October 18 to Monday, November 15, 2021.

Maude Street Mall works begin Low speed one-way traffic will return on Maude Street, from Fryers Street to High Street, with parallel parking spaces along both sides of the roadway. A new playground will be installed along with new street furniture and low garden beds to improve the streetscape and amenities for residents and visitors. The playground will be one of the first activities which could be ready by Christmas this year. The full redevelopment is scheduled for completion by late 2022. with 24 fatalities due to quad bike accidents. The biggest cause of death was crushing and asphyxiation when a quad bike rolled on top of someone. Most quad bikes weigh up to 350 kilograms.

Urgent vaccine mandate clarification sought THERE are calls for the Victorian Government to urgently clarify the confusion around unfair dismissal, privacy rights and employer and employee obligations ahead of the varying looming mandatory vaccine deadlines. Leading agriculture advocacy groups including the Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF), AUSVEG VIC, Fruit Growers Victoria, Food & Fibre Gippsland, GrainGrowers, Citrus Australia and Melons Australia are pushing for answer. Whilst recent briefings between industry representatives and Agriculture Victoria have been constructive, there remains crucial missing information on the vaccine mandate.

VFF President Emma Germano said the VFF is clear on its support of measures to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our community, however an alarming sense of confusion within the agriculture industry ahead of the mandatory vaccine deadline is creating huge angst in the community. “Industry representatives from across Victorian agriculture are calling for clarity, and we need it now. We’re only days away from the vaccine mandate coming into force and many of our basic questions seem to have been placed in the too hard basket,” said Ms Germano. “The Victorian Government must publicly release further information and they need to do it immediately. We are also

SEVERAL years ago, a group of local t ranspor t identities includ ing Lloyd Mawson, John Taig, Ken Keating, Sam Sali and Gerard Michel met with the intention of building a ‘Shepparton Transport Museum’. This group worked to set the foundations for what we have today. And that is MOVE or the Museum of Vehicle Evolution. Our current Board shares with those original identities the idea of creating a world class attraction that not only showcases transport and its history and characters but gives visitors to the region another reason to come and stay. MOVE has enjoyed financial support

from both the State and Federal Governments, but without the generous and positive support from the Greater Shepparton Council our State and Federal funding would have been much more difficult to secure. Apart from the work of the original identities it has been Jim Andreadis as the driving force behind MOVE. MOVE would have not been created to the standard that it has without the generosity of the Andreadis Family and the boundless energy of Jim. So what is MOVE? Well it is not about rust y and dust y never- changing old exhibits. It’s a celebration of equipment that moves and the people and families that have

helped this fantastic region build to what it is today. We will be constantly changing our displays and including interactive information kiosks to add to the experience. But MOVE isn’t just about cars and trucks. We have the Furphy Museum which tells the story of this local and nationally iconic family. The Loel Thomson clothing collection displaying over 10,000 items of clothing, fashions and accessories dating back to the First Fleet. MOVE is a not-for-profit charitable enterprise, and we could not have achieved what we have without the generosity of our board members past and present, our staff, volunteers and sponsors.
