Talking straight DALE Wright has a saying, “If you don’t have a best mate in your life, one’s soul and spirit diminishes. A best mate is one who knows us,but loves us anyway.” Dale heads a Men’s Health Group initiative called ‘Talking Straight.’ The friendships and trust he has forged with the men he has encountered, while running the support group, has resulted in him having the keys to mates’ homes. Together they enjoy the occasional Canadian Club can and great chats. If they are not home, he leaves the used, empty cans at their front door as his calling card to let them know he stopped by. There are also the regular texts, phone calls from the men or a drop in at his photography studio. “That’s how it works, trust, integrity and living your values,” said Dale. Dale, along with friend Kevin Sidebottom, have been running these groups for the past 23 years and over 200 men aged over

17, from all walks of life, have participated in the thirteen-week ‘Warrior Training Programme’. “We all have a story to tell, and it’s these situations that have impacted on their living. Sidie and I work through a process that seems to make a huge difference in these men’s lives,” said Dale. “If this stops one man from suicide, it’s worth it. It’s sad to know where suicide is concerned, maybe it could’ve been prevented if honest communication with other men was forthcoming.” Dale and Sidie are in the process of inviting those of all ages to attend a confidential interview to hear how the group works and assess your needs for the next group starting in 2022. Some of the men have been referred to by doctors or best mates who have done a group and through word and mouth when they see friends’ lives’ changed because of the groups. “I was walking alone and angry as I lost my three-year-old

Overcoming global challenges: SPC strengthens local output By Robert Giles LEADING one of Australia’s most iconic brands over the past two years, I recognise the challenges our country has overcome. Through supply disruptions, international worker shortages and increasing local demand, food manufacturers have been under substantial pressure to sustain production. Despite the challenges, SPC has preserved the constant supply of high-quality foods, drinks, and other products to Australian consumers. We have also been able to protect jobs across the region while the Goulburn Valley has been recognised as an area of immense opportunity

to drive economic growth as part of Australia’s manufacturing renaissance. The team at SPC continues to demonstrate resilience despite the recent Shepparton COVID-19 outbreak where 60 percent of staff quarantined at one stage. The factory still didn’t miss a customer order and we are immensely grateful to the remaining staff who kept the factory running. Leading our plans for global expansion includes diversifying our portfolio, from healthcare to hand cream, and producing better products for the future. We will be listening to our consumers and

Australian’s needs for better, ensuring that high-quality food and drink is nutritious, delicious but also versatile; while respecting that convenience and accessibility are key to modern day Australians, who are juggling jobs, families, friends, and passions. Australians are calling out for better from local food and drink manufacturers and we need to deliver. At SPC, we believe it is time for better and that is why we will continue to innovate and put consumer preferences at the heart of everything we do.

Maxine Vaccine hits the road today A SECOND bus has been added to GV Health and Dyson Group’s fleet of COVID-19 vaccination buses. ‘Maxine Vaccine’ joins Jabba the Bus in providing vaccinations to eligible populations as close to home as possible. The unveiling comes as Jabba reached the milestone for 1,500 people jabbed onboard since being launched in September. While being virtually identical to Jabba the Bus, including disability-friendly access and three spacious pods for administrating vaccines, Maxine will only accept walk-ins. Following a schedule available online, Maxine Vaccine will travel through local government areas to make access to vaccines as easy as riding a bus.

Dyson Group's Greg Fitzsimmons said that now the 95 percent vaccination rate has been achieved, the next goal was to reach communities proving more difficult to reach. Dr Helen Robert, who has been a medical lead for vaccinations at GV Health, said that working adults, and in particular males are less likely to be vaccinated. “We’d like male populations to come and visit Maxine,” she said, promoting availability as the key selling point at the heart of this incentive. All people aged 12 years and over are eligible for COVID-19 vaccination. If you have not been vaccinated yet, look out for Maxine Vaccine coming to a town near you.

COVID-19 update

ACCORDING to the Department of Health, Shepparton region has more than 95 percent of the eligible population with one dose and 80.4 percent with two doses compared to the rest of Victoria with 91 percent with one dose and 75 percent with two doses. Walk in appointments are available at the McIntosh Centre for Moderna and Astra Zeneca vaccines. GV Health’s Vaccine Hub is located in the McIntosh Centre at Shepparton Showgrounds

There are appointments available at the McIntosh Centre, including for Moderna, and online bookings can be made for all state vaccination centres at https://portal.cvms.vic. gov.au/ or by calling 1800 675 398. RESCHEDULED FOR 2022... The Shepparton High School reunion has been postponed until next year. THE Shepparton High School reunion has been cancelled for this coming November 7 due to the uncertainty of COVID. In past years, this event has been very enjoyable and well attended for over 70 years and the committee are disappointed that they had to make the decision to not hold the function next month. Many former students from the 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s travel to catch up with friends from long ago, not only from within Victoria but also from interstate. “With border closures, lockdowns and

so many restrictions at the moment, we all need to look forward to the re-scheduling of this re-union on Sunday November 6th, in 2022,” said co-organiser Millicent McNeill. “ We t h a n k e v e r y o n e f o r t h e i r understanding and hope the event in 2022 will be thoroughly enjoyable and an even better celebration than ever.” For further information, please contact Joy Phyllis (Smith) on 5825 1840 or Millicent McNeill (Stewart) on 0409 438 299.

RACE DAY

To the Editor I would like to bring to your attention the closure of the GVGS school campus for last week and how it is affecting the Year 12 cohort and their final day of school. In a community news post, the 'school leadership team' elected to close the campus for all year levels effective Monday 18th, October. The closure is a response to a handful of students on the Tongala bus being forced into isolation as tier one exposures. The student body, and in particular the year 12 cohort, who were due to celebrate their final day of school on Wednesday, last week, are experiencing immense disappointment and anger. The cohort accepts that there are members of our community who are vulnerable, and need protection from the spread of COVID, however we do not accept the school's decision to flagrantly ignore Government direction to provide onsite learning for year 12 students. The school itself has not been identified as an exposure site, and the decision to deny the year 12 cohort a chance to celebrate the end of their schooling with a traditional muck up day is both excessive and cruel, especially given the volume of events already cancelled due to COVID this year, and last year. The cohort is particularly aggrieved at the school's lack of transparency. The Tongala bus was identified as a tier one site last Friday; however, no explanation was given

until late Saturday night. The students were not personally emailed and have received no apology from the school. Perhaps the most puzzling part of the closure is the fact that its chief goal – to limit student exposure to COVID – is entirely moot. Under current guidelines, there is no lockdown in Shepparton, and a student could just as easily catch the virus from a family member, or if they choose to go shopping etc. Moreover, the issue of being exposed to the virus does not result in an inability to sit VCE exams. If a student does not test positive for COVID, they need only isolate for 7 days (if fully vaccinated, as is the vast majority of the year level) and are able to sit their exams (albeit in a safe manner). My chief aim in sending you this is to ensure the school is held to account in the public domain for their decision. Too often the school attempts to hide away from media exposure that paints it in a poor light. I would like the school leadership to accept the impact of their decision, and to be scrutinised by the Shepparton community. Whether the people find them to be acting in an inappropriate way or not, this school must explain itself to the devastated year 12 cohort, as well as their families. They should not be allowed to hide behind a news post, they should be forced to be accountable for this choice, to prompt the school to address this issue more openly with its students. Yours sincerely, Name withheld by request

A THIRD of all working Australians continue to risk poverty due to pandemic according to recent feedback. New Good Shepherd research, commissioned for Anti-Poverty Week 2021, has revealed that more than a third of all working Australians continued to be negatively financially impacted in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Research covering April 2020 to June 2021 shows 2021 figures with only a marginal drop (34 percent) from 2020 (41 percent), showing that the pandemic has now had a continued impact putting Australians at risk of poverty. More than half of those 4.7M Australians whose employment was negatively impacted were already on low incomes. This group includes an over representation of recently arrived people, women, young people, unskilled or semi-skilled workers, and sole traders/small business owners.

Of these newly vulnerable households, around 66 percent had been affected by a reduction in working hours, almost 50 percent had seen a business slow or stop completely, and 40 percent had been stood down from work for a period. Nearly 60 percent of this newly vulnerable group who had lost their job were still without employment. Staying safe in the sun MORE shade in school playgrounds and outdoor areas is on its way to protect more students across Northern Victoria from the sun’s damaging rays. Congupna Primary School will receive $22,255 towards the replacement of existing permanent shade sails between the junior classrooms, over the sandpit, over the picnic tables, above the oval drinker and alongside the main administration building. Toolamba Primary School is to receive $8,181 for the replacement of existing permanent shade sails – which was damaged by embers after the school was destroyed by fire in 2010. The funds come from a share of over $1.3M from the latest round of the School Shade Grants program and have been announced by Member for Northern Victoria, Jaclyn Symes MP. Through this initiative, the Victorian Government is helping children to be sun smart and prevent skin cancer, while still embracing the outdoors and keeping fit, active and healthy. The program provides grants to build new shade structures, repair existing structures, or create natural shade by planting trees. Funding is also provided to purchase sun protective items including hats and sunscreen. "Congupna P.S is very excited to receive this fantastic Shade Sail grant

which will provide multiple benefits to our school. It will allow us to replace our aging shade sails and will give the school a wonderful visual full of colour," said Congupna Primary School's Wendy Sidebottom. "It will provide the necessary shade for our students during outdoor times and it will allow our grades to be able to utilise these areas as outdoor learning spaces. The grant money has enabled us to provide a wonderful resource to our students and our school."

Shepparton woman wins vaccine cash prize continued from front page FORINA was one of the first to roll up her sleeve when Pfizer became available for her age group, and she never expected a cash incentive for having done so. She said, “Winning this money felt like a bonus for doing the right thing and for protecting my community from the spread of coronavirus.” The campaign has been made possible by a group of philanthropists and corporations who have formed the Million Dollar Vax Alliance, launching the hard-to-resist campaign in order to drive vaccination rates above 80 percent as quickly as possible. Member of the Alliance, Craig Winkler, commented, “We hope the campaign continues to encourage those who have made the decision to be vaccinated to do so now, rather than delaying and missing out on the chance to win a daily prize and the ultimate prize of $1M” Gift cards can be tailored to suit your spending needs and they come just in time for Christmas. Forina looks forward to treating herself to a new cordless vacuum and buying presents for friends and family. All Australians aged 18 and over who have at least one COVID-19 vaccination by October 31 are eligible to enter. Entries can be made at www.milliondollarvax.com.

Harmony Village Shepparton offers quality independent living, residential and respite care in a peaceful setting, close to the heart of the town.

Description After visiting Harmony Village I discovered that it was once a privately owned facility functioning independently until Doutta Galla acquired the facility in 1997. DGAS continued to use its previous logo (pictured below) as future plans are in place to re-brand Harmony to follow the Doutta Galla brand in a more consistent nature. With these plans in place I took the liberty to keep the original Harmony flower leaving an appreciation of its origin, yet adding to the new look and feel of the rest of the DGAS facility Identities.

COMMUNITY Buying a home easier with new fund CONNECT LOCAL property buyers will be one step closer to purchasing their own home, thanks to the Victorian Homebuyer Fund (VHF). Announced last week, the $500M VHF is expected to support more than 3000 Victorians to become homeowners. The VHF shared equity arrangement reduces the amount of money eligible participants need to enter the property market and relieves Victorian homebuyers from the extra financial burden of Lenders’ Mortgage Insurance.

It’s more beneficial for regional buyers than for city buyers, as prices in regional areas are more reasonable and affordable Rocky Gagliardi, principal of Gagliardi Scott Real Estate.

It is an expansion of the successful $50M HomesVic Shared Equity Initiative, a pilot program that supported more than 335 households to buy their first home, including four in the Greater Shepparton region. Eligibility criteria under the VHF will be broader than the HomesVic pilot, making shared equity accessible to more Victorians. Under the new scheme, they no longer need to be first home buyers, can buy in a

"It gives those buyers who haven’t got parents who have the ability to assist an equal playing field, with probably more clout with the major lenders.” The V HF is available to Australian citizens or permanent residents over the age of 18 years, who currently don’t have an interest in a property and who meet the

Tenth birthday fun AFTER many events sadly faced cancellations this year, it’s time to get back into the swing of things and head out for a day of fun. OUTintheOPEN Festival 2021 will run from October 28 through November 7, and whether you join in online or in person, you can celebrate no matter where you are. Join superstar drag co-hosts Frock Hudson and Pattie Choux as they bring local music, fun and frivolity to your screens while showcasing 10 years of OUTintheOPEN’s fondest memories ‘live’ online. Numerous events fill the festival calendar this year, starting off with a bang at GOTAFE with the ‘Think About It? Did it!,’ where you will view portraits and read anecdotes of regional LGBTIQA+ elders experiences, as we celebrate and commemorate their joys and sorrows, acknowledging the 40-year anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality. If you’ve been looking forward to catching up over good

coffee and delicious breakfast, the ‘BIG Milestone Café & Bistro Brunch’ will be offering two sessions on Sunday October 31, and the ‘BIG Lemon Tree Brunch’ on Sunday November 7 offers the same. There is also the evening meal session, ‘Winner, Winner, Schnitz for Dinner’ on Wednesday November 3. There will be so many other activities online and around town, so everyone can join in. “Many of our 30+ festival events have been re-imagined ‘online’ which means no masks, stay in your pjs, sip a glass of wine or 2, and attend from your couch (or backyard picnic blanket!) From trivia nights to queer nature connections, family friendly rainbow story time sessions to business networking, there’s something for everyone,” said festival co-convenor, Damien Stevens-Todd. Worker bees with a purpose FEELINGS of isolation, depression and hopelessness have surged during the pandemic. Bumble Bee’s Marketplace, located in picturesque Nagambie, is a small business making a big impact. “A lot of people have said that you can feel something when you come in here. We just try to provide a respectful vibe and a compassionate space for people who need it,” said managing director, Jackie Butterworth. In addition to a huge selection of competitively priced fresh local produce, flowers, groceries, and more, Jackie with the help of Jan Morris, director of Morris

Outside, found in the Marketplace, have created a space for locals to have a cuppa and a chat, after they noticed an alarming increase in customers seeming depressed or suicidal. “COVID has sent most people in a spin. People are vulnerable; At least eight people have shared to me that they were planning to end their life. I don't mind giving them my time to see them feel better when they’re leaving,” said Jan. “It’s quite tragic to see people hurting and hearing they want to end their life. We just try to lighten them up as best we can.” M a ny who have received suppor t have become a part of the fabric that fills

the Marketplace, bringing in meals they’ve made, contributing produce, crafts projects or anything else, knowing there are friends in the community who care. Bumble Bee’s Marketplace has become a hive of love and positivity. Showing compassion and respect goes a long way, particularly when mental health services are at a critical point and more people than ever are looking for assistance. We’re fortunate to find this compassion in our own backyard. Visit Bumble Bee’s Marketplace at 298 High Street, Nagambie or contact Jackie on 0490 093 625 to learn more.
