COME down to the redeveloped section of Maude Street, to celebrate the refreshed streetscape and the beginning of Shepparton’s new-look mall. This Saturday, November 27 from 9am until 2pm, family-friendly activities will be available in the recently completed section of the development and through local retailers and traders in the vicinity. There will be a Ferris wheel, street performers, activities for children and live music to liven up the place and to celebrate the lengthy construction having been completed.
If you can pull the kids away from the Ferris wheel at 12pm, they will be delighted to listen to children’s author, Katrina Nannestad. Ms Nannestad has written over a dozen books, and her latest title, ‘Rabit, Soldier, Angel, Thief’ is a brilliant example of historical fiction for children that is bound to inspire. Author of adult fiction, Ilsa Evans, will be at Collins Bookstore at 1pm on Saturday. Ms Evans has 14 books published across different genres. Her recent novel, The Unusual Abduction of Avery Conifer, asks readers, ‘What would you do to protect a child?’ and
eventgoers will be enthralled listening to her recent wise and witty novel. Children’s author, Katrina Nannestad will be at Collins Bookstore at 12pm and Ilsa Evans at 1pm this Saturday. Collin’s Bookstore is located at 262 Maude Street, Shepparton. The Street Party is free to attend. Find all the action happening on Maude Street, between Vaughan and High Street. Traders in the area are open for business and for a limited time, shoppers will benefit from complimentary parking in Council-owned parking spaces.

OVARIAN cancer sadly has a low survival rate, with women in regional areas facing the added challenge of accessing timely treatment after diagnosis. The Silver Lining Ride raises awareness of, and funding for, the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF). Cyclists have embarked on a 1200km ride across Victoria to raise funds for and awareness about this most lethal gynaecological cancer. Shepparton will host

cyclists as part of on this epic 1200km journey this afternoon through to tomorrow where they will continue their ride to Bendigo and beyond. The Silver Lining Ride began in 2017 and was founded in memory of two friends lost to ovarian cancer, Mandy Herbert, and Helen Hatzis. This year’s ride will be led by Mandy’s daughter, Georgie Herbert, who co-founded it with OCRF ambassador Clint Stanaway. Clint, and fellow OCRF ambassador and former AFL player Campbell Brown, who lost his mother, Kay, to ovarian cancer in 2019, will join Georgie for part of it. “Ovarian cancer is the most lethal gynaecological cancer, yet it is critically underfunded. Unless this changes, we will continue losing mothers, wives, sisters, daughters, and friends.” “The OCRF funds research into ovarian cancer to improve lives today and save lives tomorrow,” said OCRF CEO Lucinda Nolan. As well as the Mildura to Melbourne ride, more than 100 participants are completing a ‘virtual’ ride of 1068km either outdoors or on an exercise bike throughout November. The 1068km signifies one kilometre for each woman who died from ovarian cancer in Australia last year. Ms Nolan thanked the riders and said their dedication and support was vital for the OCRF to continue funding research into ovarian cancer. “For our best shot at improving ovarian cancer survival rates, our collective

Sheed talks public health: PERFECT PENTAL pandemic management GIFT PACKS $5 - $50 From

GREAT FOR INDIVIDUAL OR CORPORATE GIFTS
STATE OF EMERGENCY... Suzanna Sheed says no to the Public Health and Wellbeing Amendment (Pandemic Management) Bill 2021. Photo: Supplied.
By Suzanna Sheed T H E P ublic Health and Wellbeing Amendment (Pandemic Management) Bill 2021 has been the subject of vigorous debate within the halls of Parliament, among legal experts, and in our community. When the bill was sprung upon the Legislative Assembly at short notice and on an urgent basis on Tuesday, October 26, 2021, I was affronted by the government’s failure to enable enough time for debate. I had no time to consider the bill or take it back to my electorate for consultation and neither did any other member of the crossbench or opposition. On this basis alone, I voted against the bill and criticised the government’s handling of the matter. The bill was then debated in the Legislative Cou ncil and the govern ment made amendments that had been negotiated by the three crossbenchers who had been included in the negotiations throughout the drafting of the bill. However, there remained much concern and criticism of the bill. It was only when the government realised it did not have the numbers to pass the bill that it adjourned the debate to undertake further consultation with members of the upper house with the aim of getting additional support for the bill. The bill provides a process for managing a pandemic instead of declaring a State of Emergency, which usually covers natural disasters like bushfires or floods. The new bill is similar to legislation in New South Wales and New Zealand in the way the Health Minister is responsible for

making public health orders. This was a change that the opposition had been calling for on the basis that orders would be made by someone directly accountable to the Parliament and the people in a way that the Chief Health Officer was not. Concerns were raised about powers of detention and rights of appeal. The part of the bill that I believe is deficient is in the scrutiny of the decision-making processes contained in the bill. They are insufficient because the Scrutiny of Acts and Regulations Committee, which would oversee these orders, is dominated and chaired by the government of the day. A disallowance can only be brought into the lower house by the government of the day and not the opposition or crossbenchers. The government is unlikely to seek a disallowance of its own orders and therefore the clause as it stands is meaningless, making this process undemocratic. For this oversight to be fair, any member of the Legislative Assembly should be able to move a motion of disallowance against an order that is a concern to the oversight committee. I h av e b e e n wo r k i n g t o m a k e improvements to the oversight provisions in this pandemic bill and am heartened that bodies such as the Law Institute of Victoria, the Centre for Public Integrity, and the Human Rights Law Centre can all see the need for such legislation but have done a great deal of work to show the government how it can be improved from a human rights perspective before it becomes law.

CHANGING CULTURE... Shepparton ACE Secondary College students from left, Jasmine, Annie, Hayley, Matilda, Scout, Paige and Immi pictured with some of the artwork posters that were made to help stop sexual harassment within the school. Photo: Kelly Lucas
Reclaiming women’s rights By Kelly Lucas THIS year a group of girls from Shepparton ACE Secondary College where all experiencing some kind of harassment within the school yard, so they decided to form a group and called it ‘reclaiming women's rights.’ What followed is truly an amazing story of girls from year seven right up to year ten sticking together, supporting each other, and standing up for what they believe in. They promoted positive relationships and young women's safety throughout the school, and it has changed the culture. “The girls did it with style and made our school a really safe place for themselves and others while raising awareness, I am really proud of them all, they showed
persistence and achieved something important,” said Shepparton ACE Secondary College principle, Bronwyn Rose. The girls have made posters which are hung all around the school but have also designed coffee mugs and wrist bands which will come out soon to raise even more awareness. The group meets every Monday afternoon for around 30 minutes. “We have all become more comfortable within ourselves and we are no longer afraid, the relationships between boys and girls have become a lot better amongst everyone at school and we have formed some amazing friendships, the best part is the harassment has stopped” said Shepparton ACE Secondary College student, Immi.
MEMBER for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell is calling for clarity around the progression of planning for Stage 2 of Goulburn Valley Health’s redevelopment. In a constituency question to the Minister for Health, Martin Foley in State Parliament recently, Ms Lovell sought an immediate update on the status of Stage 2 of the GV Health redevelopment and again called for the GV Health Masterplan to be released to the public. Ms Lovell said when Mr Foley visited GV Health in January he was spruiking the Government’s funding of $2M for planning of Stage 2 of the redevelopment, yet this funding was announced in May 2019 as part of the 2019-2020 State Budget. Two and a half years later, there is still no clarity on the progression of Stage 2 and the Minister needs to explain the status of this vital infrastructure project. Ms Lovell said, “The Andrews Labor Government has continuously treated the Goulburn Valley community with contempt by refusing to release the GV Health Masterplan or update the public on the status of Stage 2 of the hospital redevelopment. “The full redevelopment of GV Health is crucial to meet the healthcare needs of the Goulburn Valley region and I again call on the Minister to update the public on the progression of Stage 2 and finally release the Masterplan to provide certainty for the community.”

Win a copy of new children’s book SHEPPARTON school teacher, Chris Grant has authored a book to help inspire kids to read. The Crazy Life of a School Kid follows Jimmy as he finds inventive, and often funny, ways to confront school bullies. The storyline is designed to show students the worthiness of reading, whilst educating them about bullying, how to stand up for themselves and how to develop stronger, kinder social skills. Mr Grant, who teaches at Berry Street School, can relate to students who feel uninterested or unsure about reading. He said, “I wasn’t interested in reading books growing up, but I learnt that there isn’t any way to get around it, so I thought I’d write a book that would help kids to want to read and to feel more confident.” “I never thought I’d be writing a book,
that’s for sure,” he laughed. Suitable for children aged eight to 16 years, The Crazy Life of a School Kid features engaging quizzes that follow each chapter and as well as a helpful glossary. “Often when kids are learning to read, they will skip over words that they don’t understand. Having a glossary means they can have a go on their own and feel proud.” The Crazy Life of a School Kid can be purchased through local bookstores or from Amazon. The Adviser has two signed copies of the book to give away. To enter the draw, simply send an envelope with your name and a contact number to The Adviser PO BOX 1664, Shepparton 3630. Forklift careers for women By Steve Hutcheson AFFIRMATIVE action is not difficult to deliver yet many businesses are still having trouble in finding a pathway to do so. Local fruit packing giant, Jeftomson Fruit Packing has recently taken positive steps to see women get ahead with its latest advertisement in a predominantly male role in their plant, driving a forklift. Currently the company has around 40 licenced forklift drivers working at the plant, three of them are women. Sally Hunter is one of those women. She has been driving a forklift for about five years of the twelve she has worked for Jeftomson Fruit Packing. “I was working on scheduling when the opportunity came up. They asked me if
I would have a go so I did and have not looked back since,” said Sally. “The benefit of getting a forklift licence is that it can take me anywhere if I choose but this is a good job.” Executive chairman of the company, Geoffrey Thompson sees opportunities for women in the community to find a place with the company driving forklifts. “There are women on farms and in other industries in the region who have the skills with machinery that we want to invest in.” “We see a lot of praise for those people who were the front-line service providers during the worst of the lockdowns but behind the scenes, there were many people like Sally who came to work each day TO make sure that produce got delivered and on
time,“ said Rob. T he t ra i n i ng to b e prov ided w i l l commence in early December to midJanuary looking to provide six months employment during the peak of the season.
For women in the community wanting a job driving a forklift they should send their resume to stomarchio@jeftomson.com as soon as possible.
Traffic changes to support GSSC opening GREATER Shepparton City Council is working to introduce changes to traffic and parking surrounding the new Greater Shepparton Secondary College (GSSC) site on Hawdon Street to cater for an increase in staff and students on the site. Council engaged One Mile Grid Pty Ltd to undertake a 'Local Area Traffic Management' study (LATM) to assess the needs of all modes of transport including pedestrians, cyclists, cars and buses within the precinct surrounding the GSSC site. The LATM report summarises existing traffic issues in the vicinity of the GSSC site, makes recommendations for mitigation of any issues identified and seeks to ensure that the local road network can cater for an increase in users accessing the site during pick-up and dropoff times. Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe said Council received a total of
53 submissions during community consultation with local residents and businesses on the Draft LATM, which occurred between September 6, 2021 and October 4, 2021. “Council has prepared a conversation report to summarise the submissions received and Council officers’ responses to the themes raised,” she said. “In response to community feedback, Council has made several changes to the LATM relating to parking restrictions and line marking around the precinct.” At the Council Meeting held on Tuesday, November 16, Council received and noted the final LATM report and the Conversation Report. Council will now implement the recommendations of the LATM ahead of the school opening in February 2022. This will include the introduction of no-stopping zones
during pick-up and drop-off times on sections of Annerley Avenue, Chertsey Road, Glenlyon Avenue, Norris Court and Thames Street. Unrestricted car parking spaces for residential parking, and pick-up and drop-off will be line marked to formalise car parking spaces and ensure access to driveways is maintained. Right-turn bans will also be introduced during pick-up and drop-off times along some side streets into Hawdon Street to assist in maintaining traffic flow. Line-marking works are expected to take place in late November, and signage and associated poles will be installed between December 2021 and January 2022. More information about these works is available on Council’s website: greatershepparton.com.au/council/ major-projects.

The great Aussie bake off begins Who makes the nation’s best pie and sausage roll?
THE GREAT Aussie Pie & Sausage Roll Competition begins in Sydney today. Three bakeries are representing the Goulburn Valley in the competition this year: Tatura Hot Bread, Tatura Bakery & Lunches, and North End Bakehouse in Shepparton. The 32nd annual competition brings together bakers from around the nation to compete for the honour of making the best pies and sausage rolls in the country, and it is exactly the type of event we need this year. Since its inception more than three decades ago, the competition has brought the baking industry closer and has seen winners experience unprecedented demands, while bringing tourists to regional areas to get a slice of the country life, and a slice of exceptional country baking. It is safe to say that this is a competition of excitement and prestige for anyone who is interested in pies and sausage rolls. Olivia Wells is bringing her special Mexican pie to Sydney on behalf of Tatura Hot Bread, and she is a fan favourite after taking home second prize in Sydney in 2020 and
the title of Victoria’s top gourmet pie at competitions in Shepparton this year. Tatura Hot Bread is competing in the red meat pie and plain sausage roll categories; Tatura Bakery & Lunches are competing in the plain mince, plain chunky red meat, poultry, vegetarian pie and plain sausage and gourmet sausage roll categories; and North End Bakehouse are competing in the plain mince, red meat and vegetarian pie and plain sausage roll categories. The event will be livestreamed via The Official Great Aussie Pie Competition’s Facebook page, so you can support our local contenders from the comfort of your home. Winners will be announced on Friday, November 26. Best of luck to all local competitors this year. Building for the better: regional builders donate big LOCAL builders, Hansen Yuncken have donated $10,000 to Shepparton Foodshare. Hansen Yuncken, who are building the new Greater Shepparton Secondary College (GSSC) campus, reached out to Shepparton Foodshare with funds following the local COVID-19 crisis. Jeremy Rensford, chair of Shepparton Foodshare thanked Hansen Yuncken, “Your support came at a time when our community was in crisis due to the recent coronavirus outbreak here in Shepparton. This outbreak saw around one third of our town in quarantine, many unable to work, to obtain food and cut off from their family, friends and support networks. “Your donation had a direct impact on these people enabling us to purchase and pack necessary food staples for them, and it will continue to assist by keeping our food distribution operations going while our community recovers and adapts to life as we know it now.” Shepparton Foodshare receives no regular financial support and relies on its own fundraising efforts and generous financial donations, such as Hansen Yuncken’s, to keep their critical operations going. Hansen Yuncken has maintained a local office in Shepparton for over 96 years, and has been building in regional Victoria since 1925. With such a long-standing connection to the regional centre of Shepparton, Hansen Yuncken’s senior project manager, Tom Cumming, said:
November Council Meeting Wrap BUILDING THE FUTURE... Tom Cumming, senior project manager for Hansen Yuncken with Foodshare’s operations coordinator, Grace Grieve.
“We recognise the hardship many families have experienced through the recent lockdowns across Shepparton. To bond everyone together during this difficult time and help families bring food to their tables, we have made a $10,000 donation to Shepparton Foodshare. As a family business, with many of our longstanding staff from the Shepparton region, naturally we care and support other families in need.” When the money was presented to Foodshare on Monday, November 22, 11 trees from Billabong Nursery were planted in the school’s central courtyard by Hansen Yuncken, making a huge day of progress for the new school and for the community who benefits from these services.

“I didn’t see myself as vulnerable” By Kelly Lucas FIT, forty-three and father to four, Grant Hicks is still battling the after effects of contracting Covid-19 at the end of August this year. Grant Hicks and his wife Nat are active community members who participate in several local groups including the Shepparton Running Club and it’s pretty safe to say, that both are fit and healthy people. Nat had been fully vaccinated and over a span of five weeks in quarantine with their kids also testing positive to Covid-19, she did not contract the virus at all. T hei r ch ild ren showed just m i nor s y mp tom s l i ke a g e n e r a l c old but unfortunately for Grant, things took a turn for the worse and he ended up in hospital twice. The first time it was with a heart
rate over one hundred beats per minute, irregular heart pulses, headaches, shaking and a burning chest. The second time was when things got scary for Grant and his family when he was rushed by ambulance to GV Heath with fluid on his lungs which had turned into pneumonia, that is where he remained for the following four days until released. “I always intended to get vaccinated, but I didn’t see myself as a vulnerable person, so I put it back to allow others in need to go first,” said Grant Hicks. Grant, who is now fully vaccinated and on the road to recovery which has been somewhat of a challenge, mentioned how amazing the support was while they fought the unknown. “T he communit y, our friends, family and my wonderful wife Nat

gave me hope, strength and kept my mind positive, I am pleased to be back at work, back running and back into routine, just not as far or as fast at the moment but I'm confident I'll get back there,” said Grant Hicks.
Physiotherapy on Grant’s lungs was needed to get him back on track, but he still suffers from chest tightness to this day. “If you're in a position where nothing is stopping you from being vaccinated then just go and get it done,” said Grant.
Igniting a love of literature YO U N G V i c t o r i a n s i n G r e a t e r Sheppar ton are among more than 71,000 youths who explored exciting new worlds and built their literacy skills this year as part of a Reading Challenge. Kids aged from pre-school to Year 10 collectively made their way through more than 2.8M books between March and September for the Challenge, which this year celebrated the theme ‘Open Up a New World’. The annual challenge encourages enthusiastic readers across households, early childhood centres and schools to read a set number of books, including picture books, short stories, poems or non-fiction books, and record their efforts online.
The challenge sets kids a goal of 40 books for children below school age with their parents or carers, 30 books for Prep to Year 2 students with or without assistance, and 15 books for students in Years 3 to 10. Of this year’s 71,342 participants, 8,315 readers were below school age, encouraging a love of books and stories in children from a young age. More than 12,000 books were listed on the Reading Challenge booklist for each age group to choose from, with titles curated by an expert panel including teachers and librarians. Greater Shepparton City Council will receive $12,351 so they can purchase materials to support the 2022 Challenge.

A season for hope
By Jeremy Rensford, chair of the Shepparton Ministers’ Association Thank God for Christmas! With the year we’ve all had, I say this figuratively AND literally. What a difficult year it’s been for all, and as I delve into the real Christmas story again this year, I see the main characters in the historical account of Jesus’s birth in the struggle. And the resounding prevailing message is the greatest victory of all comes, even in the struggle, and especially in the struggle. I find Jesus’s birth, and the impact it not only had on those immediately involved, but also on billions since, so inspiring and life changing when it seems all hope is gone. I’d like to introduce to you some people involved in His birth that you or a friend may relate to: · Mary – Jesus’s mum: pregnant unmarried teenager, vulnerable, poor, judged by society, fearful of losing her fiancé – where would her help come from? · Shepherds – the working class of society, nobodies, just minding their own business out in the paddocks day and night. They were considered outcasts by the powers that be at the time. · Anna – a senior citizen 84 years of age, her husband died after only seven years of
marriage, and a widow ever since. A life of sad circumstances, a life alone, her life never got up and running like it was supposed to, and she looks back and suddenly she’s in here 80’s. It’s never easy being old, and not all the younger ones get this. Each of these people needed a turnaround, they needed hope, they needed a saviour. And this saviour comes in the most unlikely form of the birth of a child named Jesus. Jesus’s birth (the Christmas story) brought a reversal to each of these people, from the struggle and vulnerabilities, to prevailing life change and hope. Mary was an extraordinary woman that brought this Jesus up in a great family, and was cared for by her son. When he was on the cross he insisted his friend John take over the duties of looking after his widowed mother. She was known to be “highly favoured” by God and “blessed by God above all other women” – a remarkable turnaround. For the shepherds they had “VIP tickets” to the greatest show on earth – the birth of Jesus. They run, with God’s invitation to the place he was born (animals quarters) , they may have been nobodies, but to God, they were somebodies. And not only this, but Jesus eventually metaphorically joins them in their occupation too – He is famously known as
“the Good Shepherd” but his flock are not sheep, they are people just like you and me. And Anna, a very devout woman, is rewarded for hanging in there and having faith. She gets to meet the messiah Jesus only in his second week of life, in the temple where she had served faithfully for decades. She finishes well, being the early mouthpiece of the story of Jesus, she is one of the first two people that was able to tell about him, and that he was specially sent by God, to many, many people. A most unlikely news source! She died happy. Brian Bell said “So we have Royalty (Jesus) clothed in rags; Majesty emerging in the midst of the mundane; Eternity stepping into time; And the most prominent event of all human history being noticed by no one but…a handful of outcasts.” If you are downtrodden, different, poor, marginalised, forgotten, judged and oppressed, these stories can become your story this Christmas. The local churches of Greater Shepparton welcome our community to join us in celebrating Christmas and we’d love to see you at a Christmas service this year, please feel free to pay us a visit. MERRY CHRISTMAS AND GOD BLESS, Jeremy Rensford.

Unique and special gifts AFTER a very hard year, a special and carefully selected gift is just the right thing to cheer up your nearest and dearest. HEADING on a trip these holidays with your caravan? Here is a caravan safety checklist will help ensure you have a safe and happy holiday. Even if you r c a r av a n is reg u l a r ly maintained, you should always do an extra maintenance check prior to and during a trip. Your car, in addition to your caravan, should also be well maintained and checked over. Keep an eye on the oil, water, brakes, rear-view mirrors and battery. If in doubt, have it looked over by a professional mechanic. If you have a portable heater in your caravan, make sure you’re careful about where you place it – keep it away from furniture and all gas, electrical or water fittings. Tyres are of absolute importance when towing a caravan. See the manufacturer’s handbook for the recommended towing tyre pressure, and check their condition regularly. Disconnect all gas, electrical and water connections in your caravan while traveling. It’s a legal requirement to fit a smoke alarm
to caravans
and fire extinguisher in your caravan. Test it regularly to make sure you and your family are kept safe. When traveling, always listen to local radio stations so you’re aware of any fires or other emergencies nearby or on your intended route. When you’re based at a caravan park, make sure you familiarise yourself with their emergency procedures too. Keep all items in the caravan secure while driving. Close the fridge door, ensure all cupboards, windows and doors are well sealed and closed, and the awning is packed away and locked in. If you’re not 100 percent confident in your towing ability, have some caravan towing lessons. When driving, pull over at a safe point if there are cars wanting to get past. If you wish to overtake someone, wait for an overtaking lane rather than crossing to the lane of potential oncoming traffic. Leave plenty of room between you and the vehicle in front to allow extra braking distance. Safety should always be your first priority, so make sure you follow the guidelines in this article.

missing over the last 18 months, like dining out, going to nightclubs and events, visiting the cinema, tourism venues and casinos once again. Density caps for hospitality and retail venues have also been scrapped, which means large crowds for major events happening over the summer. There are also no limits on the number of people who can gather in your home or in public places, meaning that you can celebrate Christmas with as many of your loved ones as you can fit around the table. Under the new statewide settings, masks are required indoors only in limited settings, including retail, health care, aged care, justice facilities, primary schools, public transport or when travelling in a taxi. If you are unable to social distance or if you have any cold symptoms, please be sensible and wear a mask. These new freedoms are great news for business owners in Greater Shepparton who have pivoted for months in order to keep doors open for the much-anticipated Christmas period.

GET OUT AND ENJOY A MEAL...GV Hotel is one of the many great pubs and clubs in our region where you can enjoy a lovely meal and great beverages. Photo: Stephanie Holliday
The gems of the countryside
EVERY country pub has a story to tell. These historic mainstays were probably one of the first buildings to be constructed in a new town, and they are still key landmarks. The casual dining scene in pubs and clubs of the region is fantastic, and there has never been a better time to plan a day out around a visit to a country pub. The meals are big on value, and the building can be magnificent.
It’s been a tough 24 months for hospitality operators across Victoria, and local pubs and clubs need your support. There are now no density caps for sit-down meals, so gather a big group together to make it all the more enjoyable. So book a lunch or dinner, hit the road and make a day of it. Cheers!

Craft beer VS mainstream brands: what sets them apart?
MAINSTREAM beers can be found around the world, in most pubs and clubs that sell alcohol. Craft beers are a little different but they have grown in popularity in Australia, and there are lots of Aussie made craft beers to enjoy. Drinking homegrown craft beer is the best way to support the local industry and keep profits in the country. The main difference between craft and mainstream brands are the natural ingredients, without additives or preservatives. To keep costs down, mass produced beers are pasteurized and use preservatives and inferior ingredients. Rather than use traditional hops, many popular beers now use rice or corn to cut costs. Craft beer is
made with hand selected ingredients and is only produced in smaller batches by master brewers who genuinely love beer. Mass produced beers are typically pale, watery yellow and the head of the beer disappears not long after being poured into a glass. The appearance and taste sets craft beer apart. Craft beers can come in a variety of colours and flavours depending on the ingredients selected. Because craft beer is produced locally and in small batches, you can travel to a local brewery and meet the very people that crafted your favourite beer. Whether you’re buying craft from the pub or the bottle shop, or dining in a brewery, there is something totally unique about craft beer.
CHANGING BEER CULTURE... Brewed locally using quality ingredients, craft beer is becoming more and more popular as customers seek a healthier alternative to mainstream beer brands. Photo: Supplied.
What your favourite pub meal says about you Chicken Parmigiana Most likely an introvert, you also aren’t very partial to change. A creature of comfort, you like to feel comfortable and are reliable, loyal and dependable...much like a chicken parmigiana. Burger You get the best of everything with a burger. A juicy meat patty, salad, bread and all with a side of chips! Burgers aren’t the most elegant thing to eat, so chances are you are confident, have a big mouth and are maybe a touch indecisive, hence selecting something that is a combination of other meals. Steak This can go a few ways. Perhaps you are a health-conscious gym goer, trying to enjoy
eating out while staying lean, and opt to pair a salad with your steak. Or maybe you naturally have a great body (and everybody is a great body!) and are free to enjoy delicious chips. If you choose vegetables, there’s a high chance you’re not much fun at parties. We haven’t even gotten into how you like your steak so, rare you may be a vampire or so well done you could kick it around the footy field, that’s another kettle of fish. With so many options, it’s safe to say you could fall under a multitude of personality types. Fish and chips Also, a favourite off the children’s menu, maybe selecting this option indicates you are a little immature. That’s fine though, because we can also bet you’re funny, silly and love tomato sauce.

By Steve Hutchenson IF your home is like most, this time of year is crazy. There seems to be a never-ending list of things to do, places to be and people to see. To top it off, it always seems to be the time for unexpected visitors and last-minute entertaining. Your house probably always has the ‘lived in look’. Despite this, here are a few handy hints for preparing it for the festive season that may help to stay organised. If you are expecting visitors over the holidays, or just want to sort out the house ready for Christmas, then try these tips: DECLUTTER I am a huge fan of decluttering, so is the boss. She thinks there is something about getting rid of a heap of stuff that clears your head and gives you a fresh start. Before the onslaught of gifts from Christmas enter the house, take some time to clear out anything that you no longer need. My mot to when I did my 30-Day
Decluttering Challenge was: Do you need it, do you love it and do you use it? If it didn’t pass those tests, then out it went. Be ruthless. Don’t keep things ‘just in case’.
STOCK THE FREEZER Last minute entertaining is always going to be part of the festive season. Make your life easier by stocking up the freezer with a few baked goods (I’ve always got banana bread on hand), and a few BBQ-friendly meats. Bread also freezes well so throw some rolls in for any last-minute guests. 3. GIVE THE GARDEN A ONCE OVER With summer taking hold, our garden was starting to look a bit neglected. Everything needed a good water and there were plenty of weeds that were getting out of control. Get the kids involved by having them water plants, pull weeds, collect leaves, rake and sweep. If they are older you could let them loose with the lawnmower!

Keeping the family happy, pets healthy and home Christmassy:
guide to pet-friendly holiday décor SHEPPARTON THE CAT THAT STOLE CHRISTMAS... Don’t let grinchy pets tear down your decorations. Keep your pets and decorations safe this year by trying alternative methods to deter pets from ornaments. Photo: Supplied.
CHRISTMAS would not be the same without our pets, those lovable furry creatures that make up our family, but it is less desirable when Tom tears down the Christmas tree or Baxter gets into Christmas lunch, or worse, Christmas drinks... Here are some tips for keeping your tree up, pets out of trouble and everyone happy while your home is decorated. Traditional festive plants, like mistletoe or poinsettias, can be harmful to animals. Alternatively, choose non-toxic native plants, like bottlebrushes to dress up your home. Fir tree oil is another plant product to be wary of if you have pets. Make sure they cannot drink your tree’s water, or you may be going to the vet on Christmas eve. Gift wrapping, cellophane, Santa pillows and hats should not be part of your pet’s diet – even if it is the silly season. Establishing a pet fence around your tree could keep pets
from harm's way or better yet, find alternative ways to wrap without using paper. Tea towels or secondhand scarves make a fantastic and fresh alternative to paper. Pet repellent spray should discourage animals from getting too comfortable with the tree, presents or decorations. Follow product descriptions and spritz where needed. Trimming branches from the bottom of the tree could discourage cats and dogs from pawing low hanging ornaments or branches. Keep breakables, favourite ornaments, and of course foods and alcohol away from pets. If you cannot keep pets, particularly curious cats from climbing your tree, try a different approach. Cats do not like aluminum foil or citrus fruits, so try wrapping your tree’s base with foil or hiding orange or lemon slices amongst tree branches. Best of luck!

Paddle down to Victoria Lake New paddleboarding activity SURFING is intimidating, wakeboarding is challenging, and windsurfing can take a lot of practice before you are able to stay upright but stand up paddleboarding (SUP) is surprisingly easy, even for beginners. Paddleboards can now be hired for use on Victoria Lake. SUP has continued to grow in popularity around the world. Enjoy testing and working on your balance in a safe, calm environment as you explore Shepparton’s iconic lake. Bring bathers, a towel, drink bottle, hand sanitizer and face mask, and your own flotation device if you would prefer to your booking. Experience is not necessary, just the ability to swim confidently and the desire to have a good time. Each session runs for 45 minutes and costs $20 per person. There are up to 15 paddleboards available at any time, meaning this is an excellent group activity. Please arrive 10 minutes before your session to get the most out of your time on the lake. SUP hire is located at the northern end of the lake, near Aquamoves on Tom Collins Drive, Shepparton. Each booking includes a paddle board, leg rope, paddle and a life jacket. For g roup, school or corporate bookings please contact Council’s Healthy Communities Team on 5832 9432 or email healthycommunities@ shepparton.vic.gov.au

continued from front page GROWING the tree was half of the work, and Hassam's gardening and grafting is mostly a project of passion. Securing the world record title has been another fete altogether. Guinness World Records originally said that the 10 different fruits Hassam had grown did not count as different species. “They told me my application was rejected, because they needed five different species, not varieties,” indicating his record attempt was a tie with the record set by Chilean Luis H. Carrasco. A further review found that two of Carrasco’s fruits – peaches and nectarines – can only be counted as a single species and making Hassam the world record holder. “I felt so happy and so excited when I found out I’d won the record title. Excited because I’d won but mostly excited because of how much more I could do for my community now,” Hassam said. He told Guinness that his tree provides a message of "peaceful coexistence", where the colours, shapes, and different leaves and fruits on the branches symbolise diversity in society, and how we live together with respect and acceptance.
