Manufacturing in Victoria to be the engine room for our economy By Deanne Jeffers V IC TOR I A N Opposit ion L eader, Matthew Guy announced the Coalition’s $2.5B fund to boost manufacturing throughout Victoria. Under the proposed plan, $1B would be allocated to regional Victoria and companies like Med-Con in Lemnos, who Mr Guy used as an example of the need to diversify regional manufacturing. MADE IN SHEPPARTON... Pictured is an astronomy enthusiast trying out the 40” telescope built by Shepparton’s Peter Read, and homed at ASV’s Dark Sky Site, Ladys Pass, Heathcote, where members can explore deep in space without investing in expensive gear. Photo: Deanne Jeffers.
By Deanne Jeffers IT started with a book, Space: A Children’s Encyclopedia, which stirred big dreams for a Shepparton Astronomy Club in the minds of Aziz Bhatti and his children, 9-yearold son Hamza and 8-year-old daughter Taqweer. Hamza wants to create an Astronomy Club in Shepparton so kids from all backgrounds can watch the sky freely together. Mr Bhatti has spoken with the Greater Shepparton City Council, Mayor Kim O'Keeffe, and the Astronomy Society of Victoria’s (ASV) president, Chris Rudge, to form a local group. Over the weekend, the ASV held their end-of-year event, where non-members can explore the group’s Dark Sky Site. Located near Heathcote, this area is purposemade to get the best view of the night sky. Members bring their own equipment and are welcome to use facilities on-site, including the 40-inch telescope that was built by Shepparton’s Peter Read, which makes it possible to see distant galaxies. “COVID has had a significant impact on business in Greater Shepparton and it’s important with the newly introduced complimentary car parking, that people abide by the rules, particularly as the all-important Christmas trading period is underway, “Shepparton Chamber of Commerce & Industry president, John Anderson said. John added, “the complimentar y timed car parking recently implemented is a big bonus to Shepparton, however the Chamber has had feedback that some traders and employees are taking up valuable car parks designed for their customers”. The question was asked, “do we have to get to the point where people will need to be reported to Council officers to stop this
behaviour from continuing?” John said. “Car parks equate to shoppers and therefore business viability”, John said. C ou nci l lau nched compl i ment a r y on-street parking (Council owned offstreet carparks are already free) at the beginning of November and while time limits still apply and infringements will be issued for cars exceeding the time limits, this is a very positive joint initiative to encourage more shopping in the city, it’s a great outcome, but it’s not for business owners and employees to park outside their business, these spaces are for their customers. The complimentary timed parking initiative is being held over four months ending on 28th February, 2022.

For the love of laptops and learning FIVE organisations in the Goulburn Valley have banded together to provide much-needed laptops to students experiencing disadvantage. Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW), Goulburn Valley Water, Data Parts, Advance Computing and Greater Shepparton Lighthouse Project will contribute more than 100 refurbished, second-hand laptops distributed to those in need under the Laptops with Love project. GMW information technology manager Peter Holland explained that GVM and GVWater would provide laptops that would otherwise be disposed to Data Parts and Advance Computing, who will factory wipe and re-image the laptops before distributing them to the Lighthouse Project. The Lighthouse Project’s executive officer, Lisa McKenzie, said there are many disadvantaged families in our community
that need access to laptops. “We hear of families of six kids sharing one laptop and women seeking to return to study or work who cannot afford a laptop to get started.” GVWater’s managing director, Dr Steve Capewell said seeing the laptops donated back into the community was a fantastic example of the region’s willingness to support others. “We know the pandemic created a significant increased demand for access to IT equipment, so Laptops with Love provides a great opportunity to give laptops that are no longer needed a new home where they can support others to achieve their goals,” he said. Just an everyday Guy By Stephanie Holliday MATTHEW GUY, leader of the Victorian Liberal Party, paid a visit to Shepparton last week to not only announce a boost to the Victorian manufacturing sector, but also to have a chat about what’s to come for our region. Mr Guy is no stranger to the Goulburn Valley. His wife, Renae Guy, has ties to our region with her grandmother having grown up in Kyabram, where she lived well into her 90s. The contrast between city driving and lifestyle and that of inner Melbourne is not lost on Mr Guy. Having myself moved to the GV from a bordering municipality to one which Mr Guy is a member for, we both lamented over the stresses of city living juxtaposed with the serenity and calmness we are privy to here in the country. As a father of three boys, Mr Guy and his family love to spend their spare time exploring all of Victoria and visiting regional areas such as ours for short trips, embarking on hiking and biking adventures. “The boys love to chop wood, make a mess and enjoy creating fires in our fire pit. They would get out of hand if I wasn’t there to step in though,” laughs Mr Guy. “We are also regulars on the train circuit. I love a country drive but trains are an interest of
mine. Last week a conductor said “You’re back again, Mr Guy”, which took me by surprise. We must catch the train to Bendigo more often than I thought.” As someone who understands the intricacies of regional towns and living, he understands the importance of enticing professionals to our region and keeping them here through the provision of adequate housing, employment opportunities, education choices and sufficient infrastructure as key components to our continued growth. “The pandemic definitely gave people a push to sprawl out of metropolitan Melbourne and decentralise. The ability to work from home has changed how we live and many people see the many benefits regional living affords them,” said Mr Guy. “The Goulburn Valley has so much to offer and is easily accessible to and from Melbourne by car. We need to continue to invest in education and employment in regional areas, the focus can’t just be on inner city infrastructure. We want to shift our focus back to productivity and positivity for all of Victoria as a united entity.” An incredible $1B has been allocated to regional areas because we want to re-invest in

businesses that are already here. We want to add to those jobs and preserve existing jobs to ensure regional cities continue to grow,” he said. “It’s not just about the big organisations either. More than ever, small and medium business need certainty. These everyday businesses are the lifeblood of our state and it’s time to move forward from the last 24 months.” As a community that has been hit so hard over the last few months and managed to muster incredible resilience and unity, moving forward is precisely what we eagerly anticipate.
We look forward to being of service to you in 2022.

EACH year, Joe and Charmaine Petrosino from Eureka Villages raise funds from pool table takings to make a difference in their community. $1,025 has been donated to the GV Health Foundation. Residents at Eureka Villages decided that this year the money would be donated to help fund cancer services at GV Health. Jo e Pe t ro si no s a id , “ We wa nted to donate the money to support cancer patients and their families who struggle to afford treatment.”
Receiving the cheque at Eureka Villages last week, GV Health Foundation director, Carla Dixon said, “On behalf of the GV Health Foundation, I would like to thank everyone who has donated. This money will make a huge difference to the lives of those in need, helping them to pay bills and to look after their health.” This is the fourth year the Petrosino’s have donated their pool table takings. They look forward to being able to raise even more money in coming years.
New home for Foodshare on the cards SHEPPARTON Foodshare are still seeking a permanent home. The crucial local service that has helped the community tremendously over the past 24 months needs to find a permanent base from which they can continue operations. The Liberal Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell used the last parliamentary sitting week for 2021 to again seek a funding commitment from the Andrews Labor Government that will build a new home for Shepparton Foodshare. After last raising the issue in September, in her latest contribution Ms Lovell highlighted the significant role played by Shepparton Foodshare in co-ordinating food distribution during August’s COVID-19
outbreak in Greater Shepparton and sought a commitment from current Minister James Merlino of $950,000 for the organisation. Shepparton Foodshare are purchasing land utilising their own funds and the State Government funding will build a new fit-forpurpose facility that will allow for upscale, and expansion should the need arise in the future. “Funding for a new home for Shepparton Foodshare would be a fitting way for the Andrews Labor Government to say thank you for the organisation’s wonderful work helping thousands of Greater Shepparton families forced to home quarantine during the August COVID outbreak,” said Ms Lovell.

Multi-million-dollar glasshouse takes shape DOZENS of entry-level jobs will become available next month as progress continues to develop on the state-of-the-art glasshouse being constructed in Tatura. Building at the site on the Midland Highway got underway in July. The impact of local COVID-19 has slowed development, however, Flavorite will have a big intake of fresh staff in January 2022 to set up for planting. Traditionally, large Truss tomatoes have been planted at the existing glasshouse. Tatura Fresh merged with Flavorite earlier this year, which has equated to more jobs and allowed both companies to diversify their commodities. With new facilities and
plans to continue building on the site, we will see snacking tomatoes, cucumbers and more being grown in Tatura. Around 60 full time workers are needed for everything from crop work to harvesting, which takes place around mid-February. While the ag industry has suffered from labour shortages, Flavorite CEO, Chris Millis said this has not been such a problem in Tatura. Although relevant skills are appreciated, experience is not necessary as successful applicants will receive on-the-job training, as well as incentives such as KPI speed bonuses. Flavorite is a family-owned business that has become one of Australia’s largest

Birrell seeks Nats seat as pre-selection looms By Deanne Jeffers SAM Birrell has confirmed that he plans to enter federal politics as the Nationals candidate for Nicholls. Nationals MP Damian Drum announced recently that he will retire at the upcoming election, which is expected to be called for May 2022. Mr Birrell made public in recent weeks that he has resigned from the Committee for Greater Shepparton, where he has been chief executive for six years. He said, “I have lived in this region for most of my life, and I care about it deeply. The region has benefitted enormously from the Federal Government investments and policy initiatives that are the result of hard work and community engagement of the
outgoing member Damian Drum. My strong conviction is that to continue this positive momentum for Nicholls, we need a highly capable Nationals member in a re-elected coalition government, and I will be focussing all my abilities and energies on achieving that outcome. Despite the achievements so far, there is more work to do.” The election will be one to watch, with Drum’s retirement sparking hope that the Liberals can win back the seat for the party. School teacher and farmer from Cobram, Stephen Brooks, has announced that he will seek Liberal Party pre-selection. While Local businessman and former Deputy Mayor of Greater Shepparton, Rob Priestly, will run as an independent.

Special things happening in the Maude Street Mall SHOPPING and summer sales continue in the Maude Street Mall, Shepparton, as construction works in the area are relaxed for the summer break. Amongst the bougainvillea and dazzling Christmas displays, Shepparton’s new look mall is beginning to take shape and shops are trading as usual, with many stores offering great sales through the Christmas period. Better yet, construction has not affected parking and shoppers can still enjoy complimentary parking across the Central Business District (CBD) until February
2022. Paul Tsorbaris, owner of the Aussie Hotel said, "It's great to see people out and about again, going shopping and heading in for lunch too." The new mall design will transform the precinct even further, bringing back slow moving, one-way traffic, on-street parking, a new playground, and beautification works to enhance the look of the area, including bringing greenery into the mall. Stage 1 works should be complete in March nex t year, with the entire redevelopment comple t ion ex p e c te d

Manufacturing in Victoria to be the engine room for our economy continued from front page ACCOR DI NG to the Liberal Par t y, Med-Con received assistance from the State Government to increase face mask production in Lemnos, but once stockpiles were filled, returned to purchasing masks from cheaper foreign-owned companies. A nnouncing the billion-dollar-fund with the State Member for Murray Plains, Peter Walsh, Mr Guy said, “It’s time we could rely on our own supply chain,” and explained that COVID-19 was the wakeup call Australia needed to reinvest in manufacturing.
“Under our plan, $1 billion will be invested in regional projects to support communities across regional Victoria becoming manufacturing hubs once again.” Mr Guy also acknowledged that financial investment was not enough to revitalise manufacturing on its own. Addressing land shortages, skills, and training shortages would be crucial to improving regional economies. Working with local councils and universities, and in particular, bringing back international students, would be the first step in rewriting Victoria’s missed opportunity in manufacturing.
MANUFACTURING SOLUTIONS... Opposition Leader Matthew Guy was in MedCon’s Lemnos factory last week unveiling big plans to revolutionise Victoria’s manufacturing capabilities. Photo: Kelly Lucas.
Grassfires move so quickly, it’s impossible to outrun them. This summer, significant pasture growth in paddocks and roadsides means that fast-moving grassfires will be a serious risk across Victoria. Rural grassfires can be just as dangerous as bushfires, and can actually spread even faster, travelling at speeds of up to 25km/h. If you live close to open paddocks or grasslands, you could be at risk and need to be prepared. On high-risk Fire Danger Rated days, the safest option is to leave early.

Mr Bhatti said, “I could not believe it for the first five minutes. I’ve already decided that I would like to delegate the prize to the ASV Shepparton chapter, so that people who are interested in astronomy locally can use the equipment to capture the stars.” Earlier this year, Mr Bhatti purchased a $2,000 Dobsonian 8-inch telescope for his children. He said, “It cost a fair bit of money, but seeing our kids use it and being so excited paid off. Our kids have discussed their equipment with other kids, including their teachers, and they were all interested in learning about astronomy.” “I’ve seen the joy in a child’s eyes when they first see the sky through a telescope and see the stars and the planets up close. They will never look at the sky the same way again. We would love to have our own local club where bigger and better equipment is provided to all kids to help them inspire and to see beyond the limits!” Mr Rudge said that he was impressed that local people and st udents are interested in forming a Sheppar ton chapter, pa r ticu la rly as t he reg ion

If we teach our kids to read, we are teaching them how to learn and to explore their interests. Parents can do so much to facilitate their children’s passions,” Mr Bhatti said. ND QUEENSLA FRUIT FLY Y COMMUNIT UPDATE
Fruit Fly in December Queensland fruit fly (Qfly) numbers will soar in December if action isn’t taken to reduce the impact of fruit fly in home gardens. Home gardeners should be on the lookout for evidence of fruit fly activity and should: • Set up fruit fly traps and monitor them regularly (every week at least) for the presence and buildup of Qfly. Fruit fly survival and spread can be controlled by a few simple actions such as: • Remove your unwanted fruit trees at no cost, simply fill out an application form at your local council customer service desk. • Use tree, branch or fruit netting products to keep Qfly away from your fruit as it ripens. • Pick up or harvest and cook or destroy unwanted and un-harvested fruit.
Advice for home gardeners Qfly numbers are high, now, in urban areas. Traps should be out, and netting should be purchased or repaired from last season for use just before fruit starts to ripen. An alternative to netting is for local groups of home gardeners to apply fruit fly baits to their yards every two to three weeks and stagger the date of baiting so that there are weekly baiting events across these groups. Any crop that is ripening or ripe now is a Qfly target within most urban and built-up township areas of the Goulburn Murray Valley.
Hot spot areas Even though no areas have reached significant Qfly numbers – to the extent that they are in outbreak proportions – the following areas have registered concerning trap capture rates. • Euroa • Mooroopna • Shepparton It is recommended home gardeners and property owners who live near these towns have fruit fly traps out and have a fall-back position if captured numbers in traps increase (e.g. baiting, netting or tree removal).

Weather outlooks Weather outlooks are reporting that eastern and south-eastern Australia are entering a La Nina event – as we had in mid-2019 to early 2020. This generally means more rain, cooler maximum temperatures and warmer minimum temperatures. This also means more damaged fruit, bacteria, fungi and yeasts which leads to more Qfly. For more information on QFF control, collect an information pack from your Council’s Customer Service Centre. Funded by the Victorian Government’s Managing Fruit Fly Regional Grants Program

$10,655 cap no longer applies
THOUSANDS of Australian families will have greater access to more affordable childcare. From Friday, December 10, the $10,655 cap no longer applies, making it easier for parents from more than 18,000 families to return to work or to pick up more hours. This change will particularly support women, who represent the majority of primary carers, by reducing childcare costs and providing parents with more flexibility if they choose to return to work or want to work more hours. As well as removing the cap, around 250,000 families with two or more children will also benefit from an increased Child Care Subsidy from March 7, 2022. Currently, families with multiple children in childcare can be financially worse off despite working additional days or hours. The Federal Government’s additional investment in the Child Care Subsidy will help remove disincentives to work. These combined policy changes mean that a family earning $110,000 a year with two kids in care, four days a week, will be better off by around $100 each week. Minister for Women’s E conomic Security Jane Hume said women’s workforce participation is a social and economic priority and critical to Australia’s economic recovery, which is why the Government is prioritising investment in childcare.

Murchison-Violet Town Road opens ahead of schedule BACK TO NORMAL... Pictured from left, Railway Hotel Murchison directors Paul, Mitch and Emilia Golding, near the new widening of the level crossing which cut off traffic to their venue for just over a week. Photo: Kelly Lucas
DRIVERS will be glad to know that the Murchison-Violet Town Road has been reopened, after being closed at the level crossing in Murchison East to progress construction of the crossing loop. Crews worked around the clock to complete these works, allowing the road to reopen more than two days ahead of schedule. The road was reopened on Wednesday December 8, after being scheduled for Saturday December 11. The closure enabled the new track to be constructed over the road and widening of the level crossing to cater for the additional line. Upgrades to level crossings will
ensure they are compatible with the new VLocity trains, while boosting safety for all passengers and road users. Once rail works are completed, trains will be able to travel up to 130km/h, while enabling nine return services to and from Melbourne every weekday. While closed, new boom gates were installed, the turning lane was widened and the road has been rebuilt. Significant works occurred to reduce impacts to the grain industry during the closure. To stay in the loop with rail upgrades this summer, go to www.facebook.com/ RRRShepparton
Bin collection days will remain as normal over the Christmas and New Year period.
Please note, Shepparton, Ardmona and Murchison Resource Recovery Centres will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Waterway update A large heronry has developed at Barmah National Park following excellent flooding conditions of the wetlands. Approximately 1600 nests of Rufous Night-heron, 70 nests of Intermediate Egret and 30 nests of Eastern Great Egret were found by GBCMA wetland staff undertaking field assessments last week. This is a significant and very exciting finding as Barmah is understood to now represent the last known nesting location for the white egret species in Victoria. The CFA like many has had its share of challenges this year. Volunteers, their families and our staff have continued to provide a valuable service to our community and we are proud of this. This is also an opportunity to remind people in our Region a couple of key messages. Preparing your property means you minimise the chance of property damage during a fire. Ensure you have a fire plan. Ensure your barbeque is safe, check the fittings and hoses for deterioration and leaks. Visit cfa.vic.gov.au for more information All the best for 2021 and beyond from CFA District 22.

It’s been a tough year for everyone with all the changes to our lives due to COVID. It has made us realise how important our family and friends and workmates are, and how much we enjoy their company. No doubt this Christmas will be a special time to get together, so I ask that you think carefully about your behaviour towards others. Not only your family, friends, and workmates, but also to others in the community and on the roads. Please be respectful of others. We don’t want this Christmas to be marred by family violence or road trauma. Please plan ahead for a safe and enjoyable Christmas.
Best wishes, Bruce Simpson, Inspector Greater Shepparton Police Service Area , Eastern Region, Division 3 Victoria Police
Throughout the past year there have been many challenges for the Greater Shepparton community and the Goulburn Valley region. This includes responding to multiple COVID-19 outbreaks, a third of our community in 14-day isolation and the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccination program. Looking back, I am impressed with the response to the COVID-19 incursions in our community and the way GV Health and the community came together to support each other.
On behalf of GV Health, I want to thank everyone who helped our local contact tracing team to track the way COVID-19 was spreading in our community and for getting COVID-19 vaccinated. As we continue to live with COVID-19 in our community, I want to encourage people to continue being COVIDSafe. We get to enjoy the freedoms that come with a high COVID-19 vaccination rate, and over Christmas I hope you take the opportunity to catch up with family and friends who you may not have seen in some time.
Best wishes, Matt Sharp, Chief Executive, GV Health

F R O M Y O U R L O C A L D I G N I TA R I E S Ambulance Victoria wishes everyone a Merry Christmas for 2021 and a happy start to 2022. Enjoy the festivities, but please remember to stay safe and look after each other. At this time of year, paramedics regularly see the devastating results of road trauma. When you’re on the road, be patient, be alert and take care - especially in situations where there’s increased traffic. The forgotten toll on our roads is those whose lives are changed forever because of serious injury. Our paramedics are part of the community and often are called to crashes that might’ve been avoided. It’s a sad reality that in country Victoria our paramedics will sometimes come across someone they know. Given the upcoming holiday period, the last thing we want is for you end up in the back of an ambulance. As paramedics, the roadside is often our workplace so when you see us stopped by the side of the road, please slow to pass at 40km/hr if safe to do so. Just like you, at the end of the day, we want to go home to our family and friends. Finally, save Triple Zero (000) for emergencies. Every call for assistance that isn’t an emergency puts significant strain on our crews to reach those who need us the most.

I know many people have suffered this year. At the same time it has been heartening to see the way our community has responded to the challenges faced. When COVID isolation triggered food shortages in many households, organisations, community leaders, volunteers and government all worked together to help ensure families did not go hungry and felt cared for. The experience showed the true spirit of our community, and the many acts of generosity demonstrated the kindness that prevails with people
willing to give time, skills and resources to care for people from all backgrounds. This Christmas be kind to yourself and others. Your time and attention and positive experiences are reassuring and more precious to children than loads of stuff. COVID has highlighted the value of simple pleasures - cooking and sharing a meal, conversation, music, hobbies and laughs. More than ever children need to feel loved and connected and supported. Take care of yourself and those around you. XO

After another rollercoaster year of lockdowns and disruptions, we celebrate our amazing students who stayed the course with their studies, including those who have completed final year and now move on to graduate employment; our dedicated staff who reinvented, adapted and moved mountains to support our students to succeed; and our local organisations who made field work, placements and professional practice happen during a pandemic – again. We also acknowledge the contribution of many La Trobe students and staff to keeping our community safe, whether that be assisting with food deliveries or leading vaccination campaigns. Best wishes from everyone at La Trobe Shepparton for Christmas and the New Year. We hope your celebrations are happy and safe, whatever form they take, and look forward to welcoming you back to campus in 2022.

What a year! It’s hard to believe the Christmas season is already upon us and as we all start preparing for the end of the year, this is also an opportunity for reflection. 2021 was especially tough for our Shepparton community and I admire your tenacity and the way you supported each other through the tough times, well done. I am immensely proud of what GOTAFE students and staff have achieved in 2021. As someone who believes in the transformative power of education, there is a huge amount of positive work happening at GOTAFE and I am optimistic that we will have more great news to share in 2022. To our students, staff and their families, I want to especially thank you all for being so adaptive during a difficult year. Your resilience is truly inspirational, and we look forward to expanding on the strengths gained in 2021 and continuing to deliver quality education next year and beyond. I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Have a great and well-deserved break, stay safe this festive season and enjoy time spent with your loved ones. We look forward to welcoming our new and returning students to our campuses in 2022.

F R O M Y O U R L O C A L D I G N I TA R I E S Can you believe it’s nearly Christmas already? Undoubtedly, you’re more organised with your present buying than I am. After an exceptionally difficult two years, marked most notably by intermittent COVID-19 lockdowns and state border closures, I hope you and your loved ones enjoy a relaxing Christmas holiday period. Whether it be attending a religious ceremony, having a prawn cocktail and champagne on Christmas morning, enthusiastically trying to win a bon bon battle, or enjoying Christmas carols, take a moment to stop and appreciate the small things that in past times we probably took for granted. I am confident the worst is well and truly behind us, and we can again return to the things we love most, whether that be visiting friends and family, travelling, playing sport, going to a concert, eating out or watching a movie. Please, wherever possible shop local and support the businesses that support us. As we prepare to enter 2022, keep up to date on funding opportunities, plus a range of other information about the Nicholls electorate, by following me on social media: simply search for Damian Drum MP on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Christmas is a special time of the year – a time when we gather with family and friends to give thanks and enjoy each other’s company. This year especially, we will truly cherish being with our loved ones, after enduring lockdowns, curfews and border closures that have kept us apart for so long. Following the enormous challenges faced by us all over the last two years, the magic of the festive season will fill us with great joy and happiness as we once again share this time with our family and friends. I hope you can celebrate this Christmas in a way that means the most to you, and that you enjoy the season of goodwill and happiness in the company of your loved ones. Together with my staff Jason, Ashe and Tamara I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a safe, happy and prosperous 2022.

and a happy New Year take this extra special opportunity to sincerely thank their valued clients for their patronage throughout 2021.
F R O M Y O U R L O C A L D I G N I TA R I E S During what has been a challenging two years, I am proud of how our community has worked together to support one another, especially during our tough lockdown in August and September. Once again, we showed our community spirit by delivering food and other essential supplies to people in home isolation. We banded together and made sure our affected community members had what they needed. As we approach the holiday season, let’s continue that generous community spirit and check in on those who may feel lonely, depressed, or anxious, after what has been an unprecedented time in our lives. We don’t want anyone to feel alone this Christmas, so reach out to neighbours, friends, and community members who may need to see a friendly face. I hope you take this break to spend time with family and friends and celebrate the resilience you have all shown throughout the year. To everyone across the Shepparton District, I wish you and your family a safe and Happy Christmas and New Year.

Best wishes,
family and friends like never before. Our Greater Shepparton Community will take in their stride the COVID requirements to stay safe whilst enjoying ourselves. Infrastructure in the region continues to boom which translates to jobs and with the openings of MOVE and SAM Shepparton has much to offer both locals and visitors. We need to consider the fact that businesses have done it hard, and it is a good plan to buy local, support locally owned businesses and in doing so, protect the jobs of our friends and relations. Above all, I hope that as we enter this festive time, that all our citizens experience the love and support that being a part of a connected family and community can provide. A very Merry and Safe Christmas, New Year and a safe and successful 2022.

As 2021 draws close to a conclusion and we look forward to celebrating Christmas, we reflect on what a year it has been. Our region made it through a year of repeated COVID lockdowns and at the end of the year it is pleasing to know that with the response to the call for vaccination, that once again, Shepparton has been a leader in the state for being innovative and resourceful. Our region, and Greater Shepparton has survived once again, however with some people and businesses doing it very hard while others able to be successful in adapting and modifying how they operate to make a success of a difficult time. Health-wise, we have as a community done extremely well. We have observed the lockdowns, we have maintained the requirements of social distancing and mask wearing with good humour, and now we are ready to celebrate Christmas with

It has been true a reminder of the amazing community spirit we have here in Greater Shepparton. The holiday season shows us all the importance of what we hold dearest, our family and friends. Now is the time to come together with loved ones, celebrate the achievements of the year and welcome a fresh start in 2022. Take care and stay safe over the Christmas and New Year period. Thank you
I extend the best wishes of Greater Shepparton Secondary College to our staff, students and their families at Christmas. Our school community includes many different cultures and faiths. So, however you might mark our term break, I wish our school community a safe and happy holiday. This break provides our teachers some welldeserved time away from the classroom. For extended periods in the last two years, they’ve had to deliver lessons remotely and this has required an incredible amount of extra effort. The last two years have also seen our four
secondary schools merge into one, requiring many of our staff and students to undergo change of campuses and familiar surroundings. As we enter 2022, our merger is complete with the move to a brand new, single campus. May I thank everyone for their understanding, patience and appreciation of the immense change taking place in the delivery of secondary education in Greater Shepparton. As we prepare to move into our brand new school, we are privileged to be experiencing such unprecedented investment in our young people. Happy Christmas to all.
to our many wonderful mentors, volunteers and supporters. We wish you and the families we support a Merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year. (03) 5831 2390

SUPPORT LOCAL... The GV Produce Box is a COVID recovery initiative to assist our regional producers and businesses, founded by Karli Sutherland and Liz Connick (pictured). Photo: Kelly Lucas
New and improved bus service for 2022 Students across Shepparton will benefit from a streamlined school bus network from the first day of Term 1 next year. When the new Greater Shepparton Secondary College (GSSC) opens at the start of 2022, the temporary school bus services implemented earlier this year to transport students to different campuses during the construction of GSSC, will be converted into permanent routes and redirected to GSSC.
Consisting of 26 routes, the new network will make services more efficient, and will maintain existing connections to primary schools and other non-government schools across Shepparton. A brand-new bus interchange with 13 bus bays will be built on Hawdon Street to service GSSC. GSSC students will continue to receive free bus travel in 2022 as they transition to their new worldclass secondary college.

World-class produce, from our own backyard By Stephanie Holliday THE Goulburn Valley is renowned for being ‘Australia’s Food Bowl,’ and that’s not all we have to offer in the way of standout produce. From award winning baked goods through to fabulous wines, the Greater Shepparton region and our close neighbours make for a foodie's paradise. The GV Produce Box started as a COVID recovery initiative in 2020 to assist our regional producers and businesses. When you purchase a GV Produce Box, you are supporting for the many regional producers and tourism businesses who have been hit hard over the past 24 months. Founded by Karli Sutherland and Liz Connick, the boxes are back in 2021 after they were a resounding success in 2020.

The boxes make for wonderful Christmas gifts, or thank you gifts, and they include pre-packaged, premium products grown and produced here in the Goulburn Valley. Many of the producers and businesses who make these items have suffered immeasurable business downturn and the sale of these boxes goes towards supporting them while also highlighting the world-class products they grow or manufacture right here in our own backyard. Last week, a group of superstar volunteers gathered at Phillips Cellars Shepparton where proprietor, Paul Phillips, kindly donated space for the boxes to be packaged up. END OF YEAR CELEBRATIONS...Matilda Pyle, Busy Bees at Shepparton student, enjoyed some festive songs as the centre farewelled 2021 at their Christmas party last week. Photo: Supplied
WET weather didn’t stop Shepparton’s party spirit last week with Busy Bees in Shepparton (Formerly Nido Early School) enjoying an end of year party extravaganza at their centre. Originally slated to take place at Kidstown, wet weather was not going to rain the kindergarten parade and the celebrations were moved to the spacious interior of the St Georges Road premisses. Each room put on a dance concert performance to Christmas tunes and
families tucked into a delicious BBQ dinner. Children enjoyed having their faces painted, receiving glitter tattoos and eating refreshing snow cones before a surprise visit from the big man in red who handed out candy canes to all the attendees. Busy Bees at Shepparton farewelled their 2021 cohort of kindergarten children who will embark on their primary school journey next year and lots of fun was had by all!

CHEVROLET buses and light trucks were built in 1931 by General Motors UK for the British market before launching the Bedford range. Bedfords date back to Vauxhall Ironworks, a company based at Vauxhall, London in 1857 by Scottish engineer Alexander Wilson. In 1905, Vauxhall moved to Luton, Bedfordshire and was later bought by American giant, General Motors, in 1925. The original Bedford OB was built in 1939 and remained in production for only two months, creating only 73 OBs, before production was turned over to the war effort. During the war, Bedford built truck, 3,398 OWBs and 5,640 Churchill tanks. The Bedford OWB was a wartime austerity version of the Bedford OB combined with
bodies that were even more austere. Post war production restarted in 1945. Bedford built 12,693 post war OBs in the UK. Unlike Australia, where Bedford OBs were popular for private city bus routes, UK production catered for regional commuter and charter operators. A lt houg h G enera l Motors - Holden Australia sold complete Bedford OBs as forward control (flat front) buses from 1947, other Australian bus body builders, such as Syd Wood and Grice, initially built bodies on Bedford OB chassis using a conventional layout. T he 1946 B edford OB with Grice b o dy, now at MOV E (Mu s eu m of Vehicle Evolution), originally operated in Toowoomba, QLD until the mid-1970s.
It was subsequently acquired by John Masterson, bus enthusiast and owner of Bellarine Bus Lines, who completed a remarkable restoration. T his B edford OB is powered by a Bedford 214ci, 6-cylinder, petrol engine with a 4-speed constant mesh transmission. Bedford’s OB designation signifies ‘O’ as the model series and ‘B’ for bus. To learn more about the 1946 Bedford DB and more vehicles, visit the new MOVE located at 7723 Goulburn Valley Highway, Kialla. If yo u , o r a n yo n e yo u k n o w, i s passionate about their car, truck, bus, motorbike, bic ycle, or wheelbar row (basically anything with wheels), please get in contact with The Adviser at editor@ sheppartonadviser.com.au. Records continue to fall at the Shepp aths track ATHLETES on the track at the Shepparton Athletics Club keep on breaking club records week after week. Danny Williams has been a member of Shepparton Athletics Club for a month and the 14-year-old has broken both the club’s U16 Male 300m and 1,500m records. Dan ny has always loved r u n n i ng, but COV I D -19 disrupted competitive opportunities. Like many of us, watching the 2021 Olympics in Japan kept Danny feeling inspired. He said, “Watching the athletes on TV it looks easy but then you realise how fast they’re running and how many hours of training you need to put in to reach that level.” Previously a member of the Shepparton Runners Club, Danny says that he feels most inspired by the number of impressive marathon runners in the district, more so than athletes on TV. When the 2032 Olympics come to Brisbane, Australia in 10 years, Danny will be 24 and he hopes to be amongst the names representing the country, as well as Shepparton in athletics. His mother, Helen Williams said,
“It’s great that there’s an athletics club in Shepparton, it’s about half an hour’ drive from where we live but being able to train with a coach, train with other athletes and train on a proper running track gives Danny so much. We’re very lucky.” I n 2022 Dan ny looks for ward to ex p er ienc i ng i nter st ate at h le t ic s opportunities. He also aims to shave more time off his records. The Shepparton Athletics Club meet Friday evenings at 5.30pm at the Shepparton Sporting Precinct located at 120 Numurkah
Road, Shepparton for self-warm up. First event at 6.20pm. Oscar Piastri takes home Formula 2 world title AUSTRALIAN motorsport masetro Oscar Piastri has become Australia’s newe st world cha mpion a f ter winning the Formula 2 world title in Abu Dhabi. The young gun, who has strong family ties to Shepparton, placed 10th for the sprint and needed to place fifth or higher in order to claim the title. Piastri started the race strongly and climbed to sixth position by the end of the first lap. With only four laps left, he challenged his teammate, Robert Schwartzman and nailed an impressive pass that earned the Aussie third place. I nd ia n raci ng d r iver, Jeha n Daruvala won the race but Piastri has commanded the season in F2 so strongly that he had locked in the title with two races left. Piastri’s F2 win is the 20-yearold's t h i rd consecutive ju n ior category title. In 2020, Piastri was t he F3 cha mpion a nd i n 2019, Formula Renault Eurocup champion. Last month, he was announced as the 2022 reserve driver for Alpine F1, finishing a year on a high point and racing to even greater opportunities.
