Carols by Candlelight to light up Queens Gardens THIS Sunday Shepparton’s Queens Gardens will light up with tinsel, Christmas lights, carols, and cheer for Carols by Candlelight. Last year’s event was moved online, but in 2021, the beloved event returns at 6.30pm. Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor Cr Kim O’Keeffe said this year’s event promised an exciting program of performers. “For newcomers to the event, the audience will be amazed to experience this year’s carols and talented local performers, keeping everyone entertained all night,” Cr O’Keeffe said. “This is the perfect opportunity to relax with your family and friends and enjoy everything that represents Christmas and to welcome in the New Year. If you are unable to join us on the evening then don’t fear on missing out, Carols will also be available to watch online through Council’s website and social media.” Continued Page 4 CAROLS THIS SUNDAY... DRIVING ON COUNTRY ROADS Driver Fatigue
• Fatigue is one of the greatest contributors to road trauma • Modern cars with their quiet running systems, comfortable seating and long stretches of straight dual lane highways, can contribute to fatigue. • To combat fatigue, take regular breaks and stop at least every two hours • Get out of the car, stretch your legs, check out the scenery and let your eyes re-focus • Take a 15-minute power nap if you feel like yourself becoming drowsy • Don’t drive when you would normally be sleeping

Making musical memories M U SIC memor y box is a n intergenerational music playgroup program developed by musician Wendy Russell. It usually runs on a fortnightly basis, but given the limitations over the past two years, only five sessions were able to go ahead in 2021. Despite this, the last session of the year, held last week, gave attendees a chance to celebrate Christmas and feel the joy this time of year provides. Menarock Life Shepparton Aged Care lifestyle facilitator Kathy Warren, told us just how much these playgroup sessions mean to the residents. “The residents are so excited on the morning of the sessions and talk about it all afternoon once they’re over. They just love it, it’s such a beautiful opportunity for them to socialise with young children as many of them don’t really have visitors in that age group,” said Kathy. “It lightens the mood and all the
residents get involved. Wendy is wonderful at ensuring the singing and activities provide many opportunities for both the children and residents alike to be involved.” Founder Wendy is looking forward to resuming in 2022 and witnessing the immense benefits the program has for all participants. “Many of the songs are ones which the residents will remember from their own childhoods or from their days of being parents to young children. It makes the residents feel very special and at the end of each session we ask the children to go around the room shaking hands and saying goodbye to each of the residents, its really lovely.” The ability for young and old alike to come together and enjoy music in a relaxed social setting is a welcome return to normalcy and a chance for all involved to forge unforgettable bonds.

to hit Shepparton in 2021, as well as news about Boxing Day sales. This edition will be The Adviser’s last update until the first edition of 2022, out on Wednesday, January 12.
Don’t miss the Boxing Day edition in your mailbox and have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the team at The Adviser.
A recipe for disaster
Distraction, inexperience, speed and fatigue TAKE care over the holiday break, as this period is often the most dangerous time on our roads. After months of limitations on movement, many of us will be reconnecting with loved ones over Christmas and travelling distances further afield, as well as enjoying pubs, cafes, restaurants and holiday destinations. It is an exciting time, but Roadsafe Goulburn Valley would like to remind drivers to be mindful of the dangers this could pose. Plan ahead, stay alert and show patience with other road users. For older Australians or young drivers who have less experience, as well as capable drivers whose car has been sitting waiting for restrictions to ease, there will be tests on our roads this summer. Your family, your community, our emergency services and all people want you to reach your destination safely. Reaching the end of 2021, the total number of lives lost on Victorian roads is 224 people, up 10.3% from the year before. If you are driving long distances, take rest breaks and do not speed. A road crash will change your life forever. Stop the car, rest up, let your people know you’re safe and continue driving with a clear mind.

MERRY ARREST-MASS
Why does Santa wear white gloves? Because he doesn't want to be caught red handed! Lucky First Constable Bochtler and First Constable Osborne were on the job. Not even Santa could evade these two, arrested for handing out too many candy canes and causing a frenzy of sugared up children at the Shepparton Markeplace. Santa was let off without a warning.

Tatura Museum, a hidden gem IN the main street of Tatura, right across the road from the top pub, is the Tatura Irrigation and Wartime Camps Museum. A hidden gem, the museum is full of rich history and one could spend hours in there poring over artefacts from a bygone era. ‘Camp 1’ in Tatura was the first of a number of purpose-built camps that were established throughout Australia to house prisoners of war during World War II. The internment camps continue to serve as a
powerful example of how everyday citizens can be implicated in the pursuit of robust national security during wartime. The circumstances that brought most internees to the camps were through no fault of their own, and despite experiencing hardship, they found ways to bring meaning and enjoyment to their daily lives. Internees established their own study classes and theatre groups and undertook a range of activities such as gardening, clothes making, furniture
and toy making, as well as organising a range of regular sports. Numbers of internees volunteered to work on local farms to help with the labour shortage. The museum is filled with the prisoner’s creations such as costumes, beautiful handmade clothes, sculptures, paintings, drawings, intricate hand-made toys and so much more. Also of interest is local family history, the museum is working on building up their display of local families’ memorabilia, so

please drop in or give them a call if you have anything of interest. Tatura Museum has many visitors from afar but they would love to see more people from across the Goulburn Valley pay a visit and soak in the rich history on display at the site. It is open on weekends and public holidays from 2pm - 4 pm and from Monday to Friday from 1pm - 3 pm. Please give them a call on 5824 2111 for further enquires.

Generous donation at crucial time SPREADING SOME CHEER... Soroptimist International of Shepparton Inc’s Gail Robertson, Katrina Mooney and The Orange Door hub manager, Mary D’Elia, with some of the hampers generously being donated to families in need this Christmas. Photo: Stephanie Holliday
THERE’S no denying that many families have done it tough this year. Record levels of calls for domestic violence support and a social housing crisis are just some indicators of the tough times many people in our community and beyond have faced, in particular, women and children. The Orange Door is a free service for adults, children and young people who are experiencing or have experienced family violence and families who need extra support with the care of children. Given their working closely with families in crisis, Soroptimist International of Shepparton Inc have come together with some local organisations such as SPC Factory Sales to donate a number of hampers to The Orange Door for them to hand out to those in crisis. The hampers are well-thought out and
contain toiletries, Christmas treats, toys, wrapping paper and even sticky tape. “Until you’ve lived through something like that yourself, it’s hard to comprehend that women who are escaping volatile situations often leave with absolutely nothing. It’s the little things you don’t think of like toiletries, little snacks for the kids...those are the things that make a world of difference to these families,” said Soroptimists' Katrina Mooney. The hampers really will make a world of difference to the recipients with hub manager at The Orange Door, Mary D'Elia, expressing her gratitude for the donation. “The Soroptimists have been so generous, and we appreciate this lovely initiative. This is incredibly valuable for those in need at this time of year and will definitely help those who need it most.”
RTMS DEPRESSION TREATMENT… Dr Vijay Raj and Healthy Mind Solutions Team are bringing new mental health treatment options to regional Victoria. Photo: Supplied
Northern Victoria now has access to innovative new treatment for depression ONE in five Australians is affected by a mental illness or disorder, including depression. Whilst a range of treatment options is available, including medication and psychotherapy, for some people these are not appropriate, or are insufficient on their own. Newly opened in Shepparton, multidisciplinar y mental healthcare practice Healthy Mind Solutions (HMS), is working to make sure that people in Northern Victoria have access to a full range of treatment options. One of these is the technologically advanced repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS). rTMS is a non-invasive and painless treatment, involving electromagnetic pulses that stimulate the nerve cells in the brain, in
20-30 minute walk-in-walk-out treatments. It’s particularly effective for patients experiencing depression that don’t respond to typical treatment methods, with studies showing that patients are experiencing a much higher quality of life, and lower use of antidepressant medication. In November 2021, the government made Medicare funding available for rTMS, significantly increasing accessibility and making it a viable option for depression sufferers. Until now it’s only been available to people living in metro areas, but with the advent of Healthy Mind Solutions, regional Victorians now also have access to this innovative treatment. For more information, call 5897 7500. The practice is located at 207 High St, Shepparton.
Don’t travel to high risk areas on Extreme Fire Danger Rating days. If you plan to travel through Victoria, during fire season, it’s important to check the Fire Danger Rating every day. If the rating is Extreme or above, avoid travelling to high risk areas, including to cities and towns.

NEWS / OPINION
Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor, We wou ld ju st l i ke to voic e ou r disappointment with the local Council and neighbouring business in relation to scaffolding being erected in front of our advertising sign at Tools Down Coffee Hub. We are a locally owned and operated business trying to support the locals and we feel that our business has been impacted because of what seems to be 'strategically
placed' scaffolding and signage. As a business, we have gone through the correct processes required to open this coffee shop in May this year, including get ting the Council permits for the container and all advertising signs and shade structures, etc, and our original opening date went from December 2020 to March 2021, then to May 2021 due to having to follow these procedures.
We welcome Letters to the Editor but they are not guaranteed to be included and may be edited for reasons of style or content. Letters will not be eligible for consideration if they contain defamatory material, or information of a personal nature which is not in the public domain. We are aware that the Council have issued the neighbouring business with a non-compliance fine, but it seems that being a national company, this hasn't been enough to force them to remove the scaffolding, which continues, we feel, to jeoprodise potential sales for our business. We have been dealing with the local Council on this matter since September and are quite disappointed that the scaffolding
still remains in its current position after almost three months. Disgruntled and Disappointed Locals. TOOLS DOWN COFFEE HUB Benalla Road, Shepparton. Want to have your say? Email your letters to the editor to editorial@sheppartonadviser.com.au Please keep letters to under 200 words.
Christmas comes early for the Haven continued from front page THE freezer is up and running in the Lighthouse Project’s Haven, with food ready to go home with some of the kids for Christmas. Through this facility, youths that face food insecurity have access to nutritious meals and a safe place to relax. Executive officer for the Lighthouse Project, Lisa McKenzie said, “The purpose of the Haven is to keep kids safe, keep kids engaged, keep kids connected and to help them get the support they need.” Hansen Yuncken project manager Jason Williamson said they recognised the work the Lighthouse Project was delivering in the
Shepparton community and wanted to help in this small way. “We’ve been lucky to tour The Haven in Shepparton previously and we wanted to show our support for this facility,” Mr Williamson said. “We hoped this donation would help Lighthouse and our region’s young people to continue delivering this important program.” Established in 2016, The Haven is based at 92 Wyndham St Shepparton (next door to the RSL) and is open Monday to Thursday from 4pm to 8pm for young people aged 12-24 years and Friday from 4pm - 7pm for young people 8 - 12 years old.

Residents asked to obey fire danger period FIRE Danger Period is now in force across Greater Shepparton, Moira and Strathbogie districts. During this period fires cannot be lit in the open air without a written permit. CFA will issue permits in certain situations during the Fire Danger Period, mostly for critical industry, agriculture, and other essential purposes. The decision whether to grant a permit is based on local conditions and considers fuel moisture, fuel loads, grassland curing, weather, and rainfall. Taking into account the current conditions in the district, CFA are still considering the issuing of permits at this stage up to December 13. If you are issued a permit there are strict conditions attached, and liability sits with the permit holder to ensure they always act safely. In particular, CFA want permit holders to take care in windy conditions. “Please read the conditions of your permit carefully and note any stipulations in relation to wind. You should never burn off when winds are high or high winds are forecast –
not only on the day of your burn but for the days afterwards,” acting assistant chief fire officer (AACFO) Rohan Taylor said. “We would also like to remind people that materials from burn offs may smoulder for weeks after the initial burn.” CFA asks people to revisit sites previous burn-offs and that they dig to investigate smouldering activity. Only materials that are ‘cool to touch’ are ‘safe to leave’. Large logs and stumps should not be lit until restrictions are lifted in autumn. Above average rainfall has caused significant grass growth, increasing the risk of fast-moving grassfires. Residents are encouraged to remove grass and leaf litter around homes and sheds, and to store wood and other combustibles away from buildings. Visit www.cfa.vic.gov.au /warningsrestrictions or call VicEmergency Hotline on 1800 226 226 for more info. To learn more or to apply for a permit go to www. firepermits.vic.gov.au
Wishing you a happy and safe holiday season.

GETTING AMONG THE WEEDS... President, John Anderson, and CBD committee person, Wendy Crow donned work gear and armed with brooms and brushes cleaned a property in the Maude Street Mall. Photos: Steve Hutcheson and Deanne Jeffers
Setting an example for others to follow AS we transition back into a more normal existence, it is time to put on a new face to get our economy restarted and back to where it was. As we do around the home and in business, investment property owners are reminded that putting up a clean presentation gives prospective tenants a

better idea on what they might do with the location. Taking action, Shepparton Chamber of Commerce and Industry members took to task a property in the Maude Street mall that might serve to show other landlords what a tidy up can achieve.

CHANGE OF PREFERENCE 2021
Celebrating GV young achievers GIRL BOSSES... GV Grammar School’s Sarah Roberts, Notre Dame’s Abby Smyth and GSSC’s Amie Forster have achieved some of the highest VCE results in the region. Photo: Kelly Lucas.
Looking for your dream course but have some questions?
ATAR scores released this week GV Grammar’s Sarah Roberts earned a 99.8 ATAR and would like to study Biomedicine at Melbourne University. She said, “My path might change after high school, but I’ve always known that I wanted to go into health.” The Benalla local was amongst the high achievers who spoke about how tough the school year has been jumping in and out of remote learning. Greater Shepparton Secondary College’s Amie Forster was one of the school’s strongest contenders for dux, missing out on the title by only .5 points to GSSC’s Halil IsGuder. At school, biology and Italian language were some of her favourite units and she will continue these interests when she resumes studying Biomedicine at Monash University. Expressing gratitude to her school community, Amie said, “In year 12 the relationship you have with friends and your teachers is so different. Your teachers become like your friends and they’re hugely supportive of us all.” Securing the title of Notre Dame’s highest VCE achiever ever, Abby Smyth earned a 99.5 ATAR. Her favourite classes have been outdoor education and environmental science, which she will continue at Monash under a ‘Global Challenges’ degree. New sports club inaugurated A MU LT ICU LT U R AL community in Shepparton has formed a sports club to encourage Shepparton’s multicultural residents to develop physical and mental wellbeing, as well as their sporting skills. Last weekend, Greater Shepparton Mayor Cr Kim O’Keeffe inaugurated the Shepp Feathers Badminton Club at the Sports Stadium with around 125 attendees. point of continuing to support the program through their virtual event. It’s people like this that make The Hunter Boyle Swim Program not only successful, but accessible to children. We are so appreciative of not only the huge donation raised, but the ongoing support from the Shepparton Runners Club.” Kidsafe Vic CEO, Melanie Courtney said, "Kidsafe Vic are so incredibly proud to be working on this program with Ash and Matt and ensuring the Hunter Boyle Children's Swim Program becomes a reality. The support of the Shepparton Running Festival means more children will receive potentially life saving swim lessons. For that, we couldn't be more thankful. With a huge spike in children losing their lives in drowning incidents over the last 12 months, all donations allow us to continue this program and save future lives."

DESPITE the 2021 Campbells Shepparton Running Festival (SRF) not going ahead in 2021, there was still a positive that came from the event in the form of a donation to Ash and Matt Boyle from The Hunter Boyle Children’s Swim Program. The SR F managed to raise $1,606 through donations from the event, as well as giving participants the option to donate during their virtual event and the option to donate their entry all together. Mathieu Ryan from the Runners Club said, “It was great to see the support not only from our local runners who donated, but also those from metro and regional Victoria”. Ash and Matt Boyle went on to say, “We would like to thank the Shepparton Ru n ners Club a nd a l l pa r t icipa nt s involved, even though the physical event couldn’t go ahead, the club made a huge
