Shepparton Hotel to go By Deanne Jeffers IT has been 15 years since the fire that destroyed the Shepparton Hotel ripped through the building, leaving ruins in its place and mixed feelings about the sight and heritage status of the building. Since the electronic billboard was removed last week, additional fencing and hoardings have appeared indicating forthcoming works at the site. The council confirmed in a statement that it had issued a 90-day demolition order for the building. Continued Page 6

By Stephanie Holliday THE Tatura Water Tower Mural Project has been named as Community event of the year for Australia Day Awards 2022. The mural is a testament of the Anzac legacy, with a waterfall of remembrance poppies featuring on one side and a portrait of Sir John Monash on the other. The Tatura RSL, led by President Robin Fairchild, have been working on the project for more than seven years which successfully resulted with an unveiling in June 2021. T he projec t , a n i n it iat ive of t he Tatura RSL led by past President Robert Mathieson, involved extensive work with the owner Goulburn Valley Water (GVW) as well as the Greater Shepparton City

Council over many years. A book has been written about the project and GV Water are preparing an interpretive board and adding lighting to the tower, so it becomes a beacon at night. $45,000 for the project was raised t h roug h gover n ment g rants and community fundraising to complete the mural. FEDERAL Minister for Tourism, Trade and Investment, Dan Tehan was in Lemnos recently to hear about the Med-Con's contribution during the pandemic, as Australia’s first manufacturer of face masks. Med-Con ramped up manufacturing in 2020 to meet consumer demand for disposable face masks. Since then, competition at home and abroad has threatened Med-Con's business, causing the business to reduce the staff they employed during the boom. Dan Tehan joins the list of politicians and supporters to get behind Med-Con, as the Liberal party promises to make manufacturing great again and the engine room of our economy. Most recently, Independent Member for Shepparton District, Suzanna Sheed, praised the Federal Government’s five-year medical mask contract with the company, and called on the state government to follow suit. In August last year, Ms Sheed called on the Victorian Health Minister Martin Foley, the Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt, and every other state and territory minister, to support the local manufacturer. “When the pandemic started in early 2020, Med-Con was the only Australian medical mask manufacturer,” Ms Sheed said. “They stepped up to the demand when our community and medical staff needed supplies and when the cheaper supplies from overseas returned to our market, Med-Con was forced to reduce its output.

MANUFACTURING OPPORTUNITY... Med-Con chief executive Steve Csiszar. Photo: Kelly Lucas.

“We must remember that supporting such vital local suppliers is important to our sovereignty as a state and a nation. “Victorians need to support one another during this pandemic and into the future. “A contract for medical masks with both the Federal and State Governments would bolster Med-Con and increase job opportunities in our district.”

$130M college open for business Flags to the sky for the first semester By Deanne Jeffers “We didn’t want to let this day pass without having a small but significant flag raising ceremony.” The state-of-the-art $130M college is one of the state’s newest education facilities, boasting unrivalled amenities like the ‘Enterprise and Innovation Centre’ that will deliver specialist performing arts, technology, and science classes, as well as world-class sporting facilities. “Our double gymnasium, outdoor netball and basketball courts, full size oval and soccer facilities ensure sport is well catered for. For passive recreation and outdoor learning, our courtyard is larger than Federation Square.” said Ms O’Brien, who also thanked builders, Hansen Yuncken, for their effort on the school. “ H a n s e n Yu n c ke n h ave b e e n i n Shepparton for almost 100 years. For the

last two years they have been managing as many as 300 or more workers on site, every day, to complete this project. It’s HY’s biggest project in the region and today marks their final day officially on site. “Many of those workers have strong links to this site. Some attended Shepparton High School, some have children who are at GSSC or will attend GSSC. We know great care went into this build and we know we are about to inherit the very best in modern school design and facilities.” Best wishes to students and their family for the 2022 school year. School’s back after summer By Stephanie Holliday STUDENTS across Greater Shepparton went back to school this week, hoping for a smoother school year in 2022 than the last couple they have encountered. There were some teary-eyed parents and carers dropping off young, new preps, donning shiny new shoes and uniforms, full of excitement as they waved farewell and joined classmates for their very first day of school. New school parent, Kelly Lucas, waved her son Harly off on Monday to begin foundation at Murchison Primary School and told us of how excited both her and Harly are for the 2022 school year. “Harly starting school is an exciting chapter for our family. We are so excited

for everything he will learn, the friends he will make and we are looking forward to his learning journey,” said Kelly. Murchison Primary School principal Karen Goodwin was happy to see the familiar faces of current students and the eager faces of new students come through the school gates. “Murchison students, parents and staff are excited to be back onsite for 2022. It was smiles all round from past and new students. Foundation students were met by their Year 6 buddies with enthusiasm and quickly settled into the school yard before entering their classrooms. Everyone is looking forward to being at school and catching up with friends,” said Karen.

SAVE OUR SCHOOL 27 January 2022 The Adviser To the Editor,

Consequently, we have become extremely concerned that the CEO and the Planning Department have not been forthcoming with the highly relevant information that their four storey building project adjoins a school, information that all councillors had a right to, prior to their initial vote in December.

Once again Council’s proposed four storey development in the carpark on the corner of Maude and Nixon Street has been publicly discussed without mentioning Shepparton ACE Secondary College. (Terry Court and John Pettigrew, The Adviser, 26th January)

As a result of this shambles, another grave concern for the residents of Greater Shepparton has reared its head – councillors may not be fully informed by council staff before they vote on issues which concern our whole community.

Once again, the writers have deliberately missed the point. While doing so further revealed to the community we are not being listened to.

It seems to us, from following her time in council, that the Mayor, Councillor Kim O’ Keefe is a thoughtful and caring person. It also seems to us that if what she and other councillors relied on to make this and other crucial decisions was accurate and timely information from council staff then they have been deliberately ill-informed.

No one is disputing the need for social housing so your arguments in this debate are void. However, our school and hundreds of members of the community are strongly disputing the location that wraps around a Year 7 – 12 secondary school as being totally inappropriate and one which places Child Safe standards at risk. Shepparton City Council, Wintringham, Beyond Housing and their supporters have yet to prosecute a single argument as to why a four storey development that wraps around, overshadows and overlooks a children’s playground and outdoor classroom is in any way a positive benefit to children’s safety and educational experiences. City of Greater Shepparton CEO and Planning Department know there is a school right next door; after all they facilitated our move to that site to enable them to demolish the buildings and redevelop the site we previously leased. Unfortunately, it seems highly likely that some councillors did not know. That much is gleaned from the consultant’s report which did not even acknowledge a school existed let alone adjoined the planned four storey development. The report was complete with concept plans, as further evidence, with balconies overlooking the children’s playground, an outdoor classroom and a third floor ‘green’ area that opens on to the school rooftop, of all things.

We are hearing comments from people across the community that the four storey development is a done deal. It is certainly a deal done in secrecy. To date Council has refused to release a comprehensive list of relevant documents to the Residents for a Greater Shepparton, including all their correspondence with Wintringham and Beyond Housing. In the interests of transparency, we publicly request that these documents be released to the Residents for a Greater Shepparton, to the councillors themselves and to our school council. Until that occurs, our concern that contracts for the construction of the four storey development may have already been signed behind closed doors remains a valid one.

Yours sincerely, Bronwyn Rose Principal

Nathalia local up close and personal with Nadal By Deanne Jeffers TENNIS Hot Shots player Layla Hawks from Nathalia was selected as an ANZ Coin Crew member for the pre-match coin toss during the 2022 Australian Open. Layla, aged five, was selected to flip the ANZ Commemorative Coin to start the Round 2 match between Rafael Nadal and Yannick Hanfmann. She said she was so excited and that she had been practicing her coin toss before coming on court at Rod Laver Arena. Layla’s two older siblings also tossed the coin for Ash Barty and Paula Badosa’s day three matches. They are among 150 lucky ANZ Hot Shot players who were given the opportunity to flip the coin at the grand slam. According to her mum, Gemma, Layla stayed up as late as she could to watch Nadal win the men’s singles tournament

against Daniil Medvedev, claiming his 21st Grand Slam title. Commenting on the initiative, ANZ m a n a g i n g d i r e c tor r e t a i l b a n k i n g Katherine Bray said, “We are so proud to support the dreams of young tennis players and provide them with a once in a lifetime opportunity to flip the ANZ Commemorative Coin on the iconic Australian Open courts. Meeting some of the best tennis players in the world is such a memorable experience for the children and ANZ is honoured to play a part in making it happen for them.” The 2022 Commemorative Coin features tennis legend Margaret Molesworth (1894-1985), who won the inaugural women’s singles title at the Australasian Championships 100 years ago. She is recognised as one of the top ten players in the world at that time.

Kicking goals in 2022 By Deanne Jeffers 2020 was supposed to be a year of celebrations – 100 years since Ardmona Football Club was formed. 102 years on, signs of the ground’s age are apparent, but the club’s fighting spirit continues to press on. As old as the club itself, the goal posts at Ardomona Recreation Reserve began being removed last Thursday to make room for secondhand posts provided by Intrack Systems Australia. The refurbished goal posts have been funded by club secretary, Justin Arrowsmith. Justin said, “It has been a long time coming and these posts are what Ardmona Football and Netball Club needs since the original posts are very old and are not the standard posts used in the league, the posts were more suited to kid's levels, not seniors.” “The club asked the AFL Goulburn-Murray League to replace the old posts, but nothing was being done. So, I took things into my own hands. Now we are aiming to have new lights, a new electronic scoreboard, and new clubrooms to replace the current facilities that are ageing

and in disrepair.” Greater Shepparton City Council mow the oval free of charge, as well as maintaining several clubs’ grounds. Upkeeping the area continues to be expensive and labour extensive for volunteer-run clubs. Ardmona FNC must hire the neighbouring community complex to host home games, and lighting is expensive, as several lights are coin operated and faulty, and the remaining lights billed to the club. “A $2 coin provides around 7-9 minutes of light, equivalent to $16 every night we train. It cost us a fortune,”

said Ardmona FNC life committee member, general maintenance and bar man, Les Wilson. Ardmona Football Club resumed training on Friday and the team look forward to the new goal posts ahead of the 2022 Kyabram District League footy season, and the start of a new chapter for the Ardmona Cats. Keeping regional doctors at home By Deanne Jeffers THE first class to undertake the entire Doctor of Medicine (Rural Pathway) in a rural setting started at the University of Melbourne’s Shepparton Campus on Monday, January 31. The degree is offered as part of a collaboration between the University of Melbourne and La Trobe University to provide regional students an end-to-end rural medical pathway and retain the graduates in regional areas. Previously, students completed their first year of study in Melbourne. The students are required to work for at least three years in a recognised rural area within 18 years of graduating. They have all lived for at least five years consecutively or 10 years cumulatively in a rural location. Head of the Department of Rural Health at the University of Melbourne, Professor Julian Wright, said he is keen to see the career impact the course will have on the new students. “This is a really important initiative that will benefit both the students and the rural communities they will one day practice in. I’m looking forward to watching these students develop into terrific medical practitioners,” Professor Wright said. He says the rural training will help address Victoria’s dire shortage of doctors in regional areas. “At the moment, we don’t have near enough medical graduates opting to start their careers outside of Melbourne. We hope this course will improve medical services and long-term health outcomes for people living in regional, rural, and remote communities,” Professor Wright said. For Isabelle Trevaskis and Grabriella Hill, who both studied Biomedical Science (medical) at La Trobe’s Bendigo campus, the opportunity to stay local and train in medicine was a no brainer.

“Having that support base from home gives you confidence that I wouldn’t have had in Melbourne. I didn’t want to move to Melbourne personally, so it’s been great to have the opportunity to stay local and be with country people that I get along with, to make new friends and new connections, while holding onto old friends from high school and everything else still around,” said Isabelle Of the 30 students, 13 have completed a Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Medical) degree at La Trobe’s Bendigo or Albury/Wodonga campuses and 17 have completed an undergraduate degree at another university.

By Kelly Lucas THE Goulburn River has some incredible fishing locations around our region, and it is a great spot to relax with a rod and the family. This school holidays there have been many people spotted out and about on our beautiful banks, catching lots and lots of Murray Cod. “I have been fishing almost every afternoon in Murchison this school holidays and I have definitely found my own little spot. I'm totally hooked on river fishing, its relaxing and the serenity is just so peaceful, the best part though is the number of Cod I have reeled in with the biggest about 55cm’s,” said fifteen-year-old Jesse Carmody. If you are heading out to do some fishing in our waters make sure if you are over the age of eighteen you have a recreational fishing license. They can be obtained for a three day to a three-year period from https://vfa.vic.gov.au/recreational-fishing / fishing-licence
