Helping keep doors open GREATER Shepparton Foundation has provided a $30,000 grant to St Paul’s African House in Shepparton to help keep the doors open of this important hub for our diverse community. St Paul’s African House provides a safe, welcoming space where people who identify with African cultures can gather to preserve, honour, celebrate and pass on their cultures through stories, music, dance, food, and fellowship. It’s also a hub that supports capacity building in migrant and refugee communities and provides opportunities for the wider Shepparton community to engage, connect and grow. Continued Page 5

Farming innovation receives funding bonus T R E E shaking machines have revolutionised the capture of fruits like olives and nuts, but the future of farming will see new robots capable of selecting and collecting soft fruits, such as the stone fruits grown in the Goulburn Valley.
Operating from McNab & Sons orchards in Ardmona, Ripe Robotics are making autonomous fruit picking using data-driven technology possible thanks to a grant worth $571,567 under the Federal Government’s ‘Accelerating Commercialisation’ program.
As well as addressing labour shortages affecting fruit growers, the powerful AI-technology will enable the robot to select fruits at their when they are at their best for picking, adding value to produce and driving value for farmers. Continued Page 3

NEWS
We won’t be invisible By Deanne Jeffers STUDENTS at Shepparton ACE Secondary College want the Greater Shepparton City Council to know that they will not be treated like they are invisible, as the campaign against proposed social housing continues. 270 cut-outs of cardboard people were decorated to represent how much of the school community stand to be impacted by the proposal to build a four-storey building around the school. “We were on holidays when the news of the social housing proposal came out. I think every person here felt shocked thinking of what this could mean for our school,” Year 12 student, Immi Langley explained. “Our privacy is being massively affected. I would feel unsafe and uncomfortable knowing strangers could see into our classrooms and into playgrounds with young students, and with people being around the school at all times.” “I love coming to school at Shepparton ACE College. We are such a tight knit group, even with new people like year seven students

who have started this week. We all work together to make this a great community.” If the proposed social housing earmarked for the Nixon and Maude Street carparks goes ahead, students want Shepparton to know their educational experience will be affected. Teacher, Frank Adams said the school has made huge progress in recently, having only moved to Maude Street last year. The art installation, ‘We are not Invisible,’ is on display in front of the college. Community consultation has been extended until February 28. Submissions can be emailed to council@shepparton. vic.gov.au, submit online at shaping. greatershepparton.com.au/ or in writing to Greater Shepparton City Council, Locked Bag 1000, Shepparton, VIC, 3632. Free parking going too soon COMPLIMENTARY parking finish at the end of February. Shepparton’s Chamber of Commerce & Industry urge Council to extend free parking bearing in mind the constant disruptions traders have faced. “Although we have enjoyed four months of this initiative at the generosity of Council, it is due to finish at a time where businesses are probably worse off now than in the previous lockdowns,” Shepparton Chamber of Commerce & Industry president, John Anderson said. M r A nderson says t he lack of government support for businesses, hospitality densities being reduced, and
staff shortages due to infectious or close contact status have negatively impacted business, while people are reluctant to be shopping in public, not wanting to become infected. Furthermore, the disruption of the mall project has come at an unfortunate time for traders in the area. Many business owners want to keep free parking. Intersport Shepparton owner, Gary (Nipper) Harvey said, “Free parking should definitely continue, at least until the Maude Street Mall works are complete. It’s a great incentive for shoppers.” Andrew Prentice, director at SPC Food Factory Sales, said he has received lots of
positive feedback about the complimentary parking. “It has made a huge difference in getting people out of Shepparton. Council should defer turning parking machines on until a long-term decision has been made regarding parking.” It is the Chamber’s opinion that an extension until a council survey can be undertaken would benefit both businesses and shoppers. “A ny thing to send a lifeline to businesses and keep jobs is wor th considering.,” Mr Anderson said.

GEOFFREY THOMPSON HOLDINGS REVAMP UNDERWAY... Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Victoria Danielle Green toured the Geoffrey Thompson Holdings fruit packing and selling warehouse on Monday and touted the benefits of in investing in regional manufacturing powerhouses such as Geoffrey Thompson. Farming innovation receives funding bonus “We’re aiming to increase the quality of fruit pears because unlike a fruit picker, the machine can tell this information exactly – how ripe the fruit needs to be, how large it needs to be, what colours are there,” said Ripe Robotics co-founder and CEO Hunter Jay. “And doing that sort of thing might slow down the speed that it picks up, which would increase the cost, but the value add from that can be fairly significant, because you're not wasting food, and you can also sort the fruit as it comes off the tree, rather than storing it for a year and paying that big expense.” Mr Jay believes this technology will entirely change how we think about agriculture, while boosting Australia’s international exports and commercial viability. “Do we want to run it the same way we’re running human fruit pickers and pick as fast as we can or do we want to go for quality determined by the season, how much fruit is still to be picked, and what the needs of the farmer are.” Co-founder Leopold Lucas describes the funding as a “game changer.” He said, “Field robotics will unlock many other opportunities for other applications that make better use of data to improve the way we grow and harvest fruit.”

“The farm of the future will be very different from the farms we know today.”
MOOROOPNA’S Geoffrey Thompson Holdings, one of Australia’s largest apple and pear growers, will be revamped thanks to a government grant. The site will be repurposed and refit to build a state-of-the-art fruit packing and grading factory, which includes installing new sor t i ng , g rad i ng a nd pack i ng equipment. Fruit grown in the Goulburn Valley and processed at the factory will be sold locally and used for purees and juices. Stock will also be exported to international markets. Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Victoria Danielle Green tou red the G eof f rey T hompson Hold i ngs f r u it packing and selling warehouse on Monday and touted the benefits of in investing in regional manufacturing powerhouses such as Geoffrey Thompson Holdings.
“Investing in regional cities is a crucial step in Victoria’s growth path. As more people start to realise the immense benefits of living in regional areas, the creation of new jobs to support the growing population is vital,” said Ms Green. “We are committed to investing in the future of our agricultural sector to boost both our own local food supply and to continue to export our world-class produce to the rest of the world.” The project will create up to 44 new full-time jobs and lead to $46M worth of new Victorian fruit exports by its fifth year of operation. This redevelopment is expected to halve post-harvest costs for fresh and processed fruit in Australia and will directly benefit more than 50 growers in the Goulburn Valley region.

Local cancer services closing the care gap Early detection drastically lifts health outcomes By Deanne Jeffers WOR LD Cancer Day on February 4 encourages people to unite and fight to prevent millions of deaths each year by improving awareness and education about the disease. The 2022 campaign, ‘Closing the Cancer Care Gap,’ asks for greater equity in healthcare. Medical oncologist, Dr Javier Torres, reports an increase in common cancers, like colon and prostate cancer, with the disease being picked up in later stages indicating that many are missing early detection. “Covid has made the gap even wider. People are not presenting to clinics for symptoms like lumps, losing weight, blood in the stool, or other signs that are worrying them.” “It is important too for individuals who feel healthy to be screened for by having a PET screening, mammogram, and the
routine bowel screening supplied by the government. Early detection means a higher chance of cure, opposed to living with treatment and the disease.” said Dr Torres. Reduced access to healthcare and cancer screening, anxiety about catching Covid or being diagnosed with a serious disease may prolong individuals from seeking answers. In the past, bad news meant patients would need to travel to receive care. “ We have g reat con nec t ions w it h metropolitan hospitals in Shepparton. The same services are delivered here, and they are delivered better because you’re not a number in a big centre, you get that country service and you don’t have to leave the area,” explained Dr Torres. GenesisCare radiation therapist Oscar Riches says travelling for treatment is an added burden for patients and their families. Working with local agencies and tapping

into the larger GenesisCare network has enabled them to continue offering rapid access to personalised treatment. Improving care opportunities locally is one way the care gap is being addressed.
Work still needs to be done but on a personal level, scheduling a health check-up for a better understanding of our bodies is one thing we can do right now to improve our chance of living a long, healthy life.

Helping keep doors open “It’s really important to keep African House open. It provides a place where our cultures and community can come together,” said, South Sudanese community member, Rebecca Awan. Despite having recently received a ‘highly commended for the ‘Community Innovation Award’ from the Victorian Multicultural Commission, St Paul’s African House is facing closure. “Like many other small not for profit organisations, the last two years of the COVID pandemic have decimated our income due to a loss in annual revenues from venue hire. Revenues in 2020 and 2021 have been reduced by 70 percent compared to 2019, severely impacting our ability to deliver the programs, connection, and care to our communities,”
impress your said African House partnerships and programs manager, Kate Radevski. “While our grant of $30,000 will help keep the doors open, they do require additional funding and support until their income sources can return. Greater Shepparton Foundation supports local-led expertise
that strengthens our local community, and African House is a wonderful example of what community can do for community. I urge other businesses and individuals to do the same so that this service is not lost,” said Greater Shepparton Foundation CEO, Cheryl Hammer.

Feedback sought on Greater Shepparton Secondary College FOLLOWING recent changes to traffic and parking arrangements surrounding the new Greater Shepparton Secondary College and Council are seeking feedback from residents, students and parents. In late 2021, Council prepared a Local Area Traffic Management Plan (LATM) for the GSSC and implemented its recommendations before the opening of the GSSC. The LATM made a series of recommendations to ensure that the local road network could cater for an increase in staff and students accessing the site during pick-up and drop-off times, while safely catering for pedestrian, cycling and vehicle movements around the precinct. The implementation of the LATM resulted in traffic management and parking changes around the school site, including the
introduction of line marking, changes to parking, and prohibiting certain right-hand turn movements on to and off Hawdon Street during pick-up and drop-off times. Council is keen to hear feedback specifically on traffic management, parking restrictions during pick-up and drop-off times, all-day parking occupancy, pedestrian and cycling routes, and any safety concerns that these groups have. Students, parents and residents are encouraged to leave their feedback on Council’s Shaping Greater Shepp site, which is open now until March 18 2022 via shaping.greatershepparton.com.au/ hawdon-street-upgrade. Feedback received will be used to inform any further changes required to traffic management and the parking regime.

Local farmers join the rat race
By Deanne Jeffers MORE than 56,000 Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) have been distributed to Victorian farmers, as part of a joint initiative to reduce disruptions to essential food supply chains. “These tests are important for getting workers back onto the farms and access to RATs is vital for keeping essential services, like agriculture, in operation. It has been difficult for farmers to stockpile RATs and this partnership between Fruit Growers Victoria, Victoria Farmers Federation, and Food and Fibre Gippsland could not have come at a better time,” said Fruit Growers Victoria’s growers service manager, Michael Crisera. VFF president, Emma Germano said the overwhelming response from people received within 48 hours, highlights the critical need and demand for RATs in the

community and the Victorian Government’s response has been an afterthought. “Our industry, as well as many others have been crying out for RATs for months. We decided to get on the front foot and secure a supply of tests ourselves.” “Farmers and industry have been telling the Government that without access to RATs, the new isolation directives intended to ease the pressure on our supply chains, won’t work.” “The response has been enormous. We’ve had over 56,000 orders within two days from literally every corner of Victoria. Our ability to get it done, despite a number of
frustrating delays goes towards ensuring our industry continues to operate.” Ms Germano said the effort to secure and quickly distribute the orders demonstrated the willingness to work together. “In two weeks, the tests have landed in Sydney, been driven down to Victoria and distributed out to 24 towns across the state. We’ve dubbed it the ‘rat race’.” The VFF, Food and Fibre Gippsland and Fruit Growers Victoria collaborated to secure the supply of RATs from HiCraft Safet y. Orders have been offered to purchasers at a fair price, with a small fee added to cover distribution costs.

Short term pain for long term gain THE Maude Street Mall redevelopment works are progressing along with the installation of the stage 2 hoarding in the northern end of the mall. Stage 2 construction works are due to be completed in late July 2022. Once works are complete the hoarding will be removed, however the roadway will remain closed to traffic until the entire project is finalised. Construction works on Stage 1 of the project, near Fraser Street, continue with the installation of the new playground expected in March. Owner of Intersport Shepparton, Gary ‘Nipper’ Harvey is viewing the works in a positive light, acknowledging that while it may
temporarily disrupt foot traffic, there is still access to his storefront and that of other nearby stores. “Thankfully, the walkway is quite wide so people can walk through with ease and it is really well lit. Admittedly, it was a little disheartening that it first went up in September last year, when our Christmas trade begins, but we got through it and we’re really looking forward to seeing the works complete,” said Gary. The project contractor has already completed a significant amount of demolition in the area to make way for the northern section of the new road surface which will be open to one-way low

speed traffic when the project is complete. Shoppers will notice lighting, shade structures, street furniture, tree cells, new concrete and paving installed in the coming months.
Greater Shepparton City Council would like to thank retailers and traders for their patience while we complete this project and encourage the community to continue to visit their favourite stores in the area during the works.

THE second annual Eden Farm Sunflower Festival was a huge success, with close to 1,000 attendees coming from as far as Melbourne to snap a photo in the golden sunflower fields in Numurkah. Following the festival, held the last weekend of January, the weather took a turn for the worse and a potential tornado approached the farm. Co-owner Gary Baker said the storm became intense around 5pm, hours after visitors had gone home, and the surge of weather lasted around 15 minutes. “I’ve never seen anything like this out here before,” he said. “It wasn’t much at first. I heard thunder and went outside to pack things out of the rain. When the wind picked up, it was total white out and you couldn’t see outside at all.” Co-owner Katherina Baker says the aftermath looks like a giant has ripped trees from the ground, snapped and then thrown them across the property. While no people were hurt, a two-year-old cow was killed by a falling tree and the damage to the property is a job for another day. “We are so blessed that no one got hurt. If the tornado had gone through only two hours earlier, anything could have happened. It was spectacular,” she said. Eden Farm is a working farm with a big impact, offering engagement opportunities and events to support marginalised groups.

Empowering local communities IF the challenges of the last couple of years have taught us anything, it’s about the resilience of our communities, and how important it is to support our towns and local businesses. This is evident in our own region, according to long-time Mooroopna resident and gmcu branch supervisor, Sharna. “The Mooroopna community are very loyal to the town”, she says. “I’ve lived in Mooroopna for 21 years and been with gmcu for 11 of those. Over this time, I’ve formed amazing relationships within the community, and learned a lot about the needs of local people.” A s t he tow n h a s develop e d a nd businesses have come and gone, Sharna is proud to have played a part in empowering the local community with her role at gmcu. “It’s not just the traditional banking needs of our members, it’s the extra assistance and personal service that enhances the overall experience,” she said. Sharna believes that being able to offer banking services locally can help the town thrive, as people don’t need to take their business elsewhere to meet their everyday needs. “Having a presence
in town, and being able to provide that face-to-face service is something that is really important to us, and the long-lasting relationships we’ve been able to build with our members is a major part of that." gmcu offers a wide range of products and expert personal service to help you with all your banking needs. Speak to your local gmcu team today to find out how they can help you.

STOP TICKET SCAMS... Riverlinks box office team leader Wendy Platt. Photo: Kelly Lucas.
R I V ER LI N KS would like to remind the community to purchase their tickets through authorised channels to avoid any complications. Unfortunately, if you present a scalped ticket to any venue, including Riverlinks, this is a breach of terms and conditions and may lead to the ticket holder being denied entry to the event. If the show is cancelled, the ticket holder will not get a refund. Riverlinks venues manager Ken Cameron said members of the public should only purchase tickets from the authorised ticket seller, which in the case of Riverlinks shows is usually Riverlinks itself. “At Riverlinks we love bringing people together for fun memorable experiences, so it’s important that you’re getting what
you’ve paid for when it comes to your tickets and having a memorable experience for all the right reasons,” Mr Cameron said. “It’s upsetting to see customers getting scammed through resale ticket markets. High profile shows tend to be the ones that are targeted the most by ticket scalpers and our team tries to help patrons where we can in those situations. We urge everyone planning on attending a Riverlinks Venue show to book through Riverlinks either via our website or through our Box Office direct.” The Riverlinks Box Office is open Monday to Friday, 10am to 4.30pm for in-person bookings, 10am to 5pm for phone bookings on 03 5832 9511 and online at all times.

THREAT TO CHILD SAFETY REQUIREMENTS To whom it may concern, As Shepparton ACE Secondary Colleges child safety officer, I am respectfully writing to raise concerns regarding meeting the Child Safety responsibilities of the school to maintain a safe environment for 100 children. Meeting the Child Safety requirements is a matter of legal and professional concern to be met for school registration. The school will take any legal action possible and deemed necessary (as it has done so in the past) to protect its students, families, staff and the school’s Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA) registration. Shepparton ACE Secondary College takes seriously our commitment to providing a safe space for children to learn and grow and for its staff and families, a safe space which this site currently provides. It is astounding that there was not any initial due diligence approach made to the school before the proposal for the development was put forward. Open communication would have made known early on very real child safety issues including VRQA school registration requirements. Just some of the risks that we would be required to manage with any large development overhanging a school would be: 1. Increased traffic flow and loss of a safe pick up and drop off space (which was a requirement of school registration) 2. Residents or visitors unwantedly approaching children 3. The possible filming of children, staff and families from windows or balconies 4. It is a legal requirement that there is no smoking within 4 meters of any pedestrian access point to the school As a Victorian State Government and Federally funded school, Shepparton ACE Secondary College has the responsibility to maintain Child Safety standards and to inform the VRQA, Independent Schools Victoria (ISV), the relevant minister/s and department head/s to the very real risks that would occur to staff and children if any development (low– high density housing) as proposed goes ahead. Regards Joel Hoffman Senior Social Worker Child Safety Officer Shepparton ACE Secondary College
LIVING WITH COVID: OUR KIDS NEED TO START, AND STAY AT SCHOOL Since the return of school students across Victoria, the relief that students, parents and teachers feel at being able to return to ‘normal’ school cannot be underestimated. I became a teacher because I wanted to make a difference in the lives of young people, teaching students work and life skills, and pathways to their dreams.
The resilience shown by students, teachers and parents throughout this COVID-19 pandemic has been truly uplifting. However, there is a dark side to school system responses to COVID-19, which has not yet been given sufficient attention. As a Cobram year level leader for Years 9 and 10 it deeply concerns me that any state government would consider inflicting further damage to student’s mental wellbeing and education with more home schooling. I have been on the other end of phone calls to crying students when I asked “How are you going?” Home schooling is not just a slight inconvenience. Tragically, there have been student suicides. The state government response to isolated rural and regional students has lacked compassion and “online learning” is never a substitute for face-to-face education and seeing friends. The time for students being held back from face to face learning must now be over. For good. No political leader should be able to so casually require students, in the most formative years of their lives – to stay at home for “just another few weeks”. Instead students (and teachers) should be fully vaccinated, wear masks and practice social distancing - until such time as those restrictions too are no longer required. Have good air flow in classrooms and conduct outdoor classes when possible. It’s not that hard. Staying at home deprives our young people of friendships, playing in a team and peer leadership, rites of passage that can never be recaptured. Steve Brooks is the Liberal candidate for Nicholls.
A WACKY PROPOSAL Dear Editor, The site chosen for a social housing construction on Edward street Car Park, should have been the last possible site thought of. Every aspect of this idea is wrong. Adjoining residential and business areas, lack of green space for families, building on a site that is L shaped and including public parking in the design. It all adds up to absolute lunacy in design and function. Many more appropriate sites are available in and around Shepparton. Small amounts of these units scattered around seem to work but this proposal has 30 units. This big number will only bring about the problems faced in large commission areas around town. Ordinarily a wacky proposal like this would not have been taken seriously, but the last few years have seen massive amounts spent by Governments in this area, such as SAM, GV Health, CFA station, Railway Upgrades, GSSC and even the building of ACE college (that they now want to build this high rise next to). This has put enormous pressure on Council to toe the line with the State Government. Let’s hope common sense prevails. Roger Perry Shepparton Want to have your say? Aquathlon a great success THE Shepparton Tri Club hosted the Victorian Aquathlon Championships, presented by Cavalier Homes, at the Victoria Lake on January 3. The event saw a number of local and visiting athletes compete in numerous race events throughout the morning and is sanctioned by Triathlon Victoria, with the Sprint Distance race selected for championship points. T he course enabled athletes to swim in the picturesque Victoria Lake amongst the backdrop of Aquamoves and the new SA M , w it h t he u n ique oppor t u nit y of a ru n through the scenic bushland whilst remaining on a sealed path. For the first time, there was a multi- class Shepparton Triathlon Club, president, Liam Moller category for athletes on the autism spectrum. The day was a great success, with Shepparton Triathlon Club president, Liam Moller, telling us how the day went. “We have been humbled by the number of positive responses from participants, supporters and Triathlon Victoria. This reflects the incredible effort of our committee, race organisers and volunteers who contributed towards making this event successful,” said Mr Moller. “Our volunteers created a special race day environment which has many local and visiting athletes already committing to the event next year!”
We have been humbled by the number of positive responses from participants, supporters and Triathlon Victoria.

By Judie Gade THE Murray Region Men’s State Fours began round 1 at Numurkah Golf and Bowls Club, on Sunday February 6. The youngest team, Cobram’s ‘Tiger Cubs’, included first season player 10 year-old Luke Dunn as lead, with second Braidon Johnson, age 22, third Andrew Giblin, age 28 and skip Dane Gade, age 28. Cobram played with resilience against the more experienced Numurkah Golf side, featuring Murray bowls legend and past Australian representative Geoff Sutcliffe. Cobram trailed 6-16, before fighting back to draw 18-18 and forcing a tie break. Gade’s last draw shot was out by a skinny 1mm, allowing Numurkah Golf to win 19-18 against the youthful Cobram side.

PRES ENTED
Badminton bestowed THE original design of Greater Shepparton Secondary College had a bustling sports precinct in mind, but not for Shepparton’s badminton players. One of the first letters Tjitte (TJ) Weistra received when he was appointed general manager of Badminton Victoria in 2020, was from the Shepparton Badminton A sso ciat ion. T he orga n isat ion was disappointed that the sport had not been considered when planning the school’s sporting amenities. Mr Weistra said he found this unusual. He said, “Australia has a strong reputation of offering many types of sports in school and Shepparton has a long history in badminton, with several large, long running clubs and passionate players in the area.” On Friday, M r Weistra and Nick
Pettitt from Badminton Victoria brought 16,000kg of equipment – including nets, poles, kits including new racquets and shuttlecocks – to the college. The donated equipment has been repainted and sewn to look new again thanks to Badminton Victoria’s club president, over six months in lockdown. Shepparton Badminton Association, the school council and the students are estatic with the donation, which will ensure that the 140 junior players locally can play badminton at the college. “Badminton is a social sport. It’s no contact, low impact, and most teams are mixed and very social. Without the facilities in local schools, we couldn’t attract young people to the game,” said Ad r ia n Su m ner of t he Sheppa r ton Badminton Association.
