The subdivision’s proximity to open land, the racecourse and the importance of water to the town, proved to be a unique inspiration for the name of our estate – Silkwater Plains.

A message from Independent candidate for Nicholls By Rob Priestly I'M running as an independent candidate for Nicholls this election because I want a better government, and a better deal for our region. Growing up on a dairy farm near Shepparton, and now running a commercial laundry business that employs over 300 people, has given me the experience I need to represent our region. We can have a strong and influential voice if we shake up the Liberal/National parties' grip on this electorate. Our loyalty for being a safe seat has not been rewarded, and we are taken for granted. I'm hearing a lot about poor water policy, and the crisis for our region in accessing GPs, mental health services and quality aged care.
I WANT A BETTER GOVERNMENT... Pictured, Nicholls independent candidate, Rob Priestly. Photo: supplied
LOCAL produce growers have been called upon by the Liberal candidate for Nicholls, Steve Brooks, to speak up on the Department of Agriculture’s risk assessment which gave a tentative green light to the importation of fresh apples from a new origin. “Local growers have told me they are deeply concerned since they became aware of the Federal Department of Agriculture’s draft risk assessment”, Mr Brooks said. “In my discussions with the peak body Fruit Growers Victoria, they describe the biosecurity risks of these imports as ‘extreme’.” Growers are most concerned that there are 24 pests and diseases infecting overseas apple orchards which are not found here. This is acknowledged in the Department of Agriculture’s draft report. At the top of the risks list is Fire Blight, the incurable apple and pear disease. “We are fortunate to be an island continent that makes it harder for the world’s pests and diseases to fly to or be blown here. However, bringing in containers of fresh fruit from diseased
orchards is inviting trouble,” Mr Brooks said. Mr Brooks said the 24 potential new pests and diseases from the proposed new importing origin include fruit fly, apple maggots, gall midge, apple mealy bugs, apple blotch fungi, as well as the Fire Blight bacteri, which all require toxic sprays to control them.

This region has fantastic potential. We need leadership that has a positive vision for the region and knows how to take it forward. I'm running to ensure the government treats this community with respect, so we get our fair share of resources and infrastructure. For the first time in decades, we have a real alternative. We can do what we have always done and get what we have always got. This time we have a choice, and I think we can do better.

Notice from National candidate for Nicholls
By Sam Birrell I am running in this election because the best way for this region to achieve the policy and investment focus it needs is with an engaged Nationals member in a Coalition government. Damian Drum has done a great job for this
electorate, achieving record levels of funding, including the Shepparton Rail Corridor and the Echuca-Moama bridge. The impression some are trying to give that Nicholls has been ignored, is self-serving and untrue. There is more to do and by using the

leverage that the Nationals hold in the Federal parliament, we can focus on continuing to build our region. I am determined to ensure the Murray Darling Basin Plan does not include an add on of 450 gigalitres, which would take water away from our farmers and send it to South Australia. I want to push for an Agricultural Visa that provides our regional businesses with the people they need to grow.
There are roads, bridges and town amenities to build, to attract people to our region and further help our economy to thrive. Our region needs support to achieve Net Zero 2050 without damaging our economic base. If I thought there was a better way to achieve all of this, I would have made a different call. The decision I made is to use the National Party power for the benefit of our region.
Have your say A COMPREHENSIVE water study has been completed on Lake Numurkah and now Council wants to hear from the public, not only from Moira Shire but also visitors and interested businesses, on the possible improvement opportunities to develop this beloved community asset. Council are committed to the long-term future of Lake Numurkah and has allocated $50,000 to undertake an analysis of water flows and develop landscape upgrade options. “This analysis, performed by water engineering specialists Spiire, involved a review of all aspects of the lake including survey work and landscaping opportunities,” Mayor Libro Mustica said. “The results of this analysis include retaining a portion of the lake for ornamental/ recreational purposes; use integrated water management for water treatment; incorporate wetlands into the design; and provide a stormwater management solution as Numurkah develops to the north. “We now want to hear from you – what do you think of the various improvement opportunities outlined in the analysis?” Cr Mustica acknowledged many members of the community just wanted the lake full of water year round. “But to achieve that, Council would need to regularly purchase additional water which could put us in active competition with our farmers for water,” he said. “It is important to note that since the lake was built the irrigation water sector has totally transformed. By Deanne Jeffers WHEN you adopt from a shelter, it goes without saying that you are saving that animal’s life. The impact pet adoption has is far greater than one life, one pet and one family. By adopting, you make space for another needy animal, and you give them the opportunity to become beloved pets. Shepparton Animal Shelter needs the community’s help to manage the influx of animals surrendered to the shelter, in particular cats and dogs. Council aims to find new homes for these pets, with all animals being vet checked, desexed, microchipped, vaccinated and treated for worms and fleas. Greater Shepparton City Council’s director sustainable development, Geraldine Christou said, “With an increased number of cats and dogs at the Animal Shelter, we are encouraging

individuals looking for a new pet to consider adoption.” “Our staff are working hard to find the right home for the right animal and want to ensure each animal’s new home is long lasting and the right fit.” “If you need help adopting a pet, please reach out to our staff at the Animal Shelter. Prices for dog adoption range from $100 to $465, depending on age, and cats are $100 to adopt. We look forward to connecting these rehomed pets with their forever families.” Residents can visit the Shepparton Animal Shelter on Wanganui Road to meet the animals available for adoption and to make an application. PUBLIC notices will continue to be required to be published in regional newspapers, in a win for regional publishers and regional communities. Independent Member for Shepparton District Suzanna Sheed helped change the direction of the State Government’s move to cut government spending on regional newspapers , wh ile g reatly reduci ng community access to information. Ms Sheed questioned Premier Dan Andrews about Labor’s attempt to remove the government’s requirement to place public notices in local newspapers and instead use an online platform to host such information. “With the stroke of a pen the government could have wiped out the requirement to publish public notices in our local newspapers,” Ms Sheed said. Mr Andrews said thanks to the advocacy of Ms Sheed and others the government would make an amendment to the Regulatory
Legislation Amendment (Reform) Bill 2021. T he a mend ment w i l l ret a i n t he requirement to publish public notices in regional newspapers. This will ensure the government notices required under legislation such as those relating to permits, approvals, licenses, and many other matters will continue to be published. Ms Sheed said the move by the Labor Government proved the effectiveness of independents in the Victorian Parliament and gave credit to the premier for listening to important regional issues. “The continuing loss of advertising has contributed to the closure of many newspapers and if this bill passed unamended, it could have been the last straw for many more.” “It is vital that public notices are accessible to everyone, especially in regional areas where such notices can have great impact on the community.”

THE RIGHT CALL
Dear Editor, I READ with interest Shelley Sutton’s le t ter to t he e d itor d ate d 2 5/ 2 / 2 2 regarding Cr Rob Priestly temporarily pausing his council career while he conte st s t he 202 2 federa l ele c t ion. Mu n ic ipa l A s s o c i at ion of V ic tor i a Guidelines clearly states that every effort should be made not to cloud the two separate roles. Cr Priestly has followed these guidelines to a tee. He could clearly be gaining publicity as a councillor by retaining his council position if he desired. Council is a lot bigger than one councillor. At a time when most voters are disillusioned with the behaviour of both sides of the house, it is heartening to see someone with the integrity of Rob Priestly put his hand up to serve the good people of Nicholls. Those being critical of Rob standing aside are more interested in the agenda of promoting their favorite party than in good standards of governance. Yours sincerely, Dennis Patterson Mooroopna

regarding Rob Priestly’s comments about lack of action from our current Federal Member for Nicholls, Damian Drum. Cr Priestly was elected as a councillor for the City of Greater Shepparton to act on behalf of the Greater Shepparton people. When retailers in the Maude Street Mall needed free access for their customers during Christmas trading, from October to December, Cr Priestly allowed the construction of hoardings across the front of these shops from corner of Maude and Fraser Streets. Now t he sit u at ion w it h t he la nd surrounding the Shepparton ACE College, where the Greater Shepparton Council proposes to sell the land for a peppercorn price to a developer to build a four-story building which would overshadow the school. SHEPPARTON’S INDEPENDENCE
Dear Editor, OVER the past decade I’ve seen both the Liberal and National parties let our region down badly on water policy. We have seen a Basin Plan instigated by their creation of the 2007 Water Act and poorly implemented over the past nine years in government. They can blame nobody else for the harm that has occurred – loss of production, jobs, and massive social and environmental damage. It’s been their reform and their mess. Unfortunately, our region is low on their order of priorities. The National Party is more interested in their wealthy backers in the northern Basin and have failed to properly regulate floodplain harvesting there, which has reduced our own water reliability. The Liberal party is beholden to South Australian interests and holding on to marginal seats there. Local Liberal and National candidates at this election will say the right things about water but they have no influence over their party’s policies. What their party leaders and financial backers say is what counts, and they see no reason to change. This election, I’d prefer our region to support a credible independent who can use their vote in a tight parliament to negotiate for a change to water policy. It’s got to be better than another three years of the same. Yours sincerely, Dudley Bryant Numurkah

Lake Numurkah improvement opportunities – have your say A comprehensive water study has been completed on Lake Numurkah and now we want to hear from interested people on the possible improvement opportunities to develop this community asset. Council is committed to the long-term future of Lake Numurkah and allocated $50,000 to undertake an analysis of water flows and develop landscape upgrade options. This analysis, performed by Spiire’s Water Engineering and Landscape Architecture teams, involved a review of all aspects of the lake including survey work and landscaping opportunities. The results of this analysis include retaining a portion of the lake for ornamental/recreational purposes; using integrated water management for water treatment; incorporating wetlands into the design; and providing a stormwater management solution as Numurkah develops to the north. We now want to hear from you – what do you think of the various improvement opportunities outlined in the analysis?

GIVE THIS A GO...Topiary is the ancient art, dating back to Roman times, of sculpted shrubbery, pruning shrubs and trees into shapes, including animals. Photo: Supplied
TOPIARY is the ancient art, dating back to Roman times, of sculpted shrubbery, pruning shrubs and trees into shapes, including animals. It is the horticultural practice of training perennial plants by clipping the foliage and twigs of trees, shrubs and subshrubs to develop and maintain clearly defined shapes such as geometric ones or even animals. The term also refers to plants which have been shaped in this way. The word derives from the Latin word for an ornamental landscape gardener, topiarius, a creator of topia or "places", a Greek word that Romans used.
The plants used in topiary are evergreen, mostly woody, have small leaves or needles, produce dense foliage, and have compact and/or columnar growth habits. Shaped w i re c ages a re somet i mes employed in modern topiary to guide untutored shears, but traditional topiary depends on patience and a steady hand; small-leaved ivy can be used to cover a cage and give the look of topiary in a few months. The hedge is a simpler form of topiary, often used to create boundaries, walls or screens. Add some fun to your garden and have a go at creating your own topiary masterpiece.

window trends Sheer curtains Sheer curtains are nothing new, but they have again become very on-trend. They are often used in dining rooms, living rooms, and kitchens, as the curtain type allows for more privacy while still letting in some natural light. If you live on a property that’s easily visible from passers-by, you can always add block out blinds behind for added privacy. Plantation shutters Indoor shutter blinds, also known as plantation shutters, are durable window fixtures that offer year-round light and privacy control and look amazing with most interior styles.

Japanese encephalitis
infection alert VICTORIANS, particularly those close to the V IC / NSW border, are being urged to protect themselves against mosquito bites following possible cases of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV). JEV is a mosquito-borne virus that can develop into encephalitis, which can be potentially life-threatening. Evidence of the virus has been found in pigs in Echuca, as well as in New South Wales including near the border, and in southern Queensland. There are no confirmed human cases of the JEV strain in Victoria, however several cases of encephalitis have been identified within the past month. While the vast majority of Japanese encephalitis infections don’t result in the need for clinical treatment, it can develop into a serious illness. “Most people with JEV will have no or very mild symptoms, but anyone who develops a sudden onset of fever, headache and vomiting should see their doctor
immediately,” said Chief Health Officer, Professor Brett Sutton. “People with these symptoms can deteriorate over just a few short days, including suffering a loss of coordination, disorientation, generalised weakness and in some cases issues with movement which can last for years.” Thankfully, the disease can’t be passed between humans and steps can be taken to reduce the risk of exposure. Trying to avoid mosquito bites as best we can is key, including covering up, wearing loose fitting clothing and using mosquito repellents. People with increased exposure to mosquitoes may be at a higher risk of infection, particularly those in regional areas and who work with or are in contact with pigs, and people camping, working or spending time outdoors in these regions. Children aged under five years old and older people who are infected with JEV are at a higher risk of developing more severe illness, such as encephalitis.

This full-sized car was the first of the second generation of Falcons. Fu r t hermore, the XR marked the very first time a V8 engine could be optioned in all trim levels. Previously, V8s were reserved for more upmarket variants in Australia. Initially, the XR series was offered in nine different models. These were the Falcon, Falcon 500, and Fairmont sedans; the Falcon, Falcon 500, and Fairmont wagons; the Falcon and Falcon 500 utilities (utes); and the Falcon Van. The Falcon 500 replaced the Falcon Deluxe from the XP series, and the two-door hardtop body style available in the XP series was not offered in the XR range. LIFESAVER... Alice Milner, GMW strategy and services coordinator, is one of 45 GMW Lifeblood Team members who made 125 blood and plasma donations at the Shepparton Donor Centre last year, helping to save the lives of 426 people. Photo: Supplied
Gift of life for more than 50 people TATURA mother-of-two, Alice Milner, has given the ‘gift of life’ to more than 50 people thanks to her plasma donations over the past 12 years. The strategy and services co-ordinator is one of 45 Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) Lifeblood team members who have made 125 blood and plasma donations at the Shepparton Donor Centre last year, helping to save the lives of 426 people. “Unfortunately, I have had a large number of people in my life who have been impacted by cancer, and plasma is one of many things that is used to assist cancer patients,” Alice said. “The reality is, if I can help anyone who is going through one of the worst or toughest times of their life, be an accident or illness, then a small amount of my time is a gift I am willing to give.” Alice has been donating plasma about twice a year since late 2010, shortly after moving to Tatura to join GMW.
Hailing from Sydney, where she regularly gave blood, Alice turned to donating plasma after the move to Victoria saw her body unable to cope with giving blood during the warmer months. “I was adamant I wanted to continue to donate, so I spoke with the donation centre and found a way that my body was very comfortable with – and that was plasma,” she said. While giving blood and plasma isn’t for everyone, Alice encouraged those who could to seriously consider it, as one donation could help to save three lives. “The teams at the donation centres and over the phone are amazing and support you through each donation journey.” Australian Red Cross Lifeblood’s Shae Burns said almost 10,000 blood and plasma donations were made at the Shepparton Donor Centre last year. To become a blood donor, go to https:// www.lifeblood.com.au/ or phone 13 14 95
Revved up for 2022 Tour De Course! AFTER some serious headwinds created by Covid-19 preventing this event from happening, the organisers this year have a field of 35 cars competing. The 2022 Tour De Course event starts with scrutineering this Friday 11th March from 3pm to 7pm at Shepparton’s very own Museum of Vehicle Evolution (MOVE) then the driving action gets underway at Deca from 9.15am on Saturday morning and runs until about 2pm. This includes a number of driving events and challenges. Then it’s on to Wilby Raceway on Sunday for more driving events starting from 9.15am and Winton Raceway on Monday from 10.30am. Organisers, drivers, navigators and crews are thrilled to be back in action and there are some very impressive vehicles entered including Porsche 911 GT3’s, a Mercedes AMG GTR, Nissan GTR’s, BMW’s, Subaru WRX STI’s, Mitsubishi EVO’s, a Corvette Z06, a 1979 Opel Monza and even a 2019 Ford Mustang “Bullitt” in action, this is going to be epic! As always, these events don’t just happen and the organisers would like to make special mention of the crew of people and volunteers who work so hard behind the scenes to help make this event happen.
