LANDSCAPING works, as part of the Stage 1 North Growth Corridor development, have commenced in the area north of Ford Road between the Goulburn Valley Highway and Verney Road. The North Growth Corridor is one of the two original growth corridors identified for future residential development in Greater Shepparton. This will support this development through the addition of a shared pathway along Warrumbungle Drive, tree and wetland planting, play space with playground, shelter and BBQ area and public open spaces for residents to enjoy. The landscaping works will occur Monday

to Friday from 7am to 5pm and on weekends only if required, with completion of the project expected in June 2022. An information session will be held in the coming months for local residents to provide more information about the project and gain feedback on the design of the playground equipment and play space. Residents will be contacted with further details. Council asks road users to adhere to all traffic management directions during the works. For more information about the works contact the Projects team on 5832 9700 or email projects@shepparton.vic.gov.au.

Real implications of an important choice THE Nicholls electorate communities have a crucial decision to make on election day. The Liberal candidate for Nicholls, Steve Brooks, has a message for our region ahead of the election. "A vote for anyone other than myself as the Liberal candidate, or our partners in the National Party, is a vote for a Labor-GreenIndependent government," said Mr Brooks. "Just last week, the ALP promised to deliver the additional 450GL of water if elected and refused to rule out buy-backs in order to deliver it. "It was Labor South Australian Senator Penny Wong's water buy-backs which broke the back of the GMID. These buybacks damaged the dairy industry in particular, but all across the Goulburn Murray Irrigation District the summer green turned to a patchwork of yellow and dust. "Our region delivered some 80 percent of the environmental water bought from all irrigators made desperate by the drought," Mr Brooks said. Mr Brooks wishes to detail his priorities should he be elected. "If elected, I will be tireless in my advocacy for our regional investment, infrastructure, and improved government services. The last time you chose a Liberal, Sharman Stone, she released a wave

of Federal spending into the region. The Liberals saved SPC, fought Fire Blight, brought new waves of refugee workers into the region, the list goes on and on," said Mr Brooks.

"I want to put that same energy and drive back into this seat, under a Liberal-led Coalition Government in Canberra. We have too much to lose otherwise."

Historic truth telling underway continued from front page ELDERS were invited to share during yarning circles, and First Peoples can tell their truth to Yoorrook in a wide range of ways that allow them to tell their story. This may be through yarning circles, going out on Country, through music or performance, or any other way. “All the conversation is about the future and future thinking,” said commissioner Sue-Anne Hunter. “Thinking about how we can do things differently and what possibility there is in the future not just for Aboriginal people, but for non-Aboriginal people too. So, there is hope.” Having visited around 30 communities in the state, the

commissioners agreed that each area has diverse strengths and struggles, but that overall, the generosity in which First Peoples have shared their stories is overwhelming and will be a great guide when preparing their interim report later this year. All submissions are protected by Indigenous data sovereignty, which gives Indigenous people the right to regulate, collect, use and own data recorded on Indigenous people, communities, resources and land. This landmark commission will establish an official public record of the impact of colonisation while developing a shared understanding amongst all Victorians of this impact, the diversity, strength and resilience of First Peoples cultures.

Echuca-Moama bridge opened By Sam Birrell, Nationals candidate for Nicholls. WALKING across the new Echuca-Moama bridge last weekend was a great moment, and the bridge is a great example of the Nationals delivering key projects for our region. We don’t go for the fanfare and fuss so much in the Nationals. We just get it done. The Victorian Nationals, when they were part of the Victorian Coalition Government nearly ten years ago, began the process of making the bridge into a reality after decades of people talking about it. The NSW Nationals as part of the NSW Coalition Government later chipped in, and then the Federal Nationals in Government finished the job and we got our Echuca-Moama bridge. Delivery is what matters in the country, and to deliver, you need to be part of the government. You need to be in the room in which the decisions are made. Whether it’s a new freight hub to take our farm produce to port and to the world, or a new bridge, or hundreds of millions of dollars worth of rail improvements, the Nationals deliver. New fibre-to-the-home ultra fast internet for Kyabram was another highlight recently, and just last week we were crucial in forcing petrol prices down by halving the government’s take on petrol and diesel. Country people don’t always like politics. Most are happy to have politics out of their lives so long as good things are being delivered. When the Nationals are in Government, things get delivered for our region.

Submissions heard on proposed sale of car park A TOTAL of 750 submissions and 38 verbal briefing presentations over a two-day period from residents, business owners and community members who wished to be heard on the proposal to sell airspace above the Maude, Nixon and Edward Streets Car Park have been heard by Greater Shepparton City Council. Each of these submissions and verbal briefings, including all material provided by submitters to Council at the briefings, will be heard by Council officers and considered before they prepare two reports to Council. This includes a conversation report which will outline the consultation process, contents of submissions and Council officers’ responses to each of the concerns raised, and a Council report that will make a recommendation to Council on the proposal.

All submissions, verbal briefings and Council officers’ reports will then be considered by Council at a future Council Meeting. Due to the length of submissions and verbal briefings received, reviewing all of the feedback and recommendations will take time. Council officers have also commissioned additional technical expert reports to appropriately analyse and respond to matters raised in submissions. As part of the process, Council officers may be in contact with submitters to clarify any concerns raised in their submissions or verbal briefings. A copy of the recording of the verbal briefing can be found on Council’s Shaping Greater Shepp website shaping.greatershepparton. com.au/edward-st-affordable-housing.

Change is in the air

Feed for flood recovery

HELP FLOOD AFFECTED AREAS... WB Hunters Mitre 10 are calling out for donations to help those in flood affected areas like Lismore. Consumables and other goods can be donated at any of Hunters’ stores. Pictured is rural division manager John Billman and warehouse manager Darryn Service. Photo: Deanne Jeffers.

LOCAL trade, rural and hardware store, WB Hunters Mitre 10, has arranged a donation bin where residents can donate consumables to help those who have been affected by the floods. More than 1,300 animals have lost their lives during the extreme weather. Livestock have fared worse than household pets, with many farmers losing their land, livelihood, and their stock overnight. Many cattle have drowned in the floods, while others have starved because the dirty water has contaminated their pastures. With more rain expected, residents in flood affected areas are crying out for assistance. “Every little bit counts and helps people in need who have gone through the toughest thing,” said rural division

A ST RONG desi re for change was the common theme for a large group of supporters that attended independent candidate Rob Priestly's campaign launch on Friday night. Around 250 people attended the event at African House in Shepparton, which included musical entertainment from the St Paul's Lutheran Church Choir, before guest speaker and former Independent MP for Indi Cathy McGowan inspired the crowd with a rousing motivational speech. "Our launch showed that people from all walks of life are getting involved making this change," said Mr Priestly. "Our supporters come from completely different backgrounds, but they're all united by their desire for achieving something better for our region." "People realise that we have a once

manager, John Billman. After collecting enough goods and foodstuffs, Hunters will freight the donations at their own cost to flood affected areas. Check at the register for donation points, or better yet, pick up something extra in your order to donate when you drop in to buy feed, seed, chemicals or more for your own animals. Donations can be made at WB Hunters Mitre 10 HQ at 20-28 Florance Street, Shepparton, or any of their other seven stores in Tatura, Echuca, Euroa, Corowa, Katandra West, Yarrawonga, and in Wangaratta. in a generation opportunity to get some attention on this region in Canberra, and to lift the standard of politics to something better. It's a moment in time for our region and the community is seizing it with both hands." Mr Priestly said that the show of support at the launch is consistent with what he's hearing in the community, and was reflected in recent polls and national media coverage. "I'm getting blown away by the support we're getting. I knew there was a desire for change in our region but the momentum we're getting is just incredible." "I've never seen enthusiasm about an election in this region like we have this time around. I feel like something really big is happening and it's very exciting for our community."

$8.5M project opened

continued from front page “Together these upgrades have improved the safety and functionality of the area which is now a comfortable and appealing environment for all,” said Mayor Kim O’Keeffe. The project also included streetscaping to beautify the area, gas and water upgrades, new road pavement, as well as marking, footpath works, and lighting. Federal Member for Nicholls Damian Drum said Shepparton has had issues in the CBD, but projects like the revitalisation and the ongoing mall redevelopment, currently

in progress, are ways these issues are being addressed to transform Shepparton. "Today’s a day for celebration,” he said. “It’s all about redeveloping our CBD and making it as good as it can possibly be.” Mr Drum said the success of these projects is due to the strong partnerships formed between all levels of government and local business traders. Each stage was funded by Council and the Federal Government’s ‘Building Better Regions’ fund, with additional funding provided by Public Transport Victoria for Stage 2 of the works, which included the bus interchange and pedestrian crossing.

More efficient heating for your home

LAND has been generously donated to local charity organisation Foodshare, to build their “forever home” and continue their incredible work feeding families in need. The support has come from local business owners and philanthropists, the Andreadis family, who responded to a call for community assistance last year when Foodshare was notified that they must vacate their Mooroopna warehouse. Spokesperson for the family, Jim Andreadis, said, “We have been supporters of Foodshare since its inception, so when we heard of its search for a permanent home, it was important for us to respond.” Jim was a member of the steering committee that established the concept and operating model for Shepparton Foodshare in response to needs identified within the community. His expertise and networks within the fresh produce and grocery sectors have been useful in securing some of the food rescue and donation partners that remain today. Ange Andreadis volunteered

packing food boxes during Greater Shepparton’s Covid crisis last year, which put a third of the working population into isolation and saw demand for Foodshare’s services skyrocket to their highest in history. “Time and time again this great service has demonstrated its importance in our community. We’re really pleased that our support will help enable the service to move to the next level and remain viable,” said Jim. “Having secured the land, Foodshare was able to use this as leverage to achieve further funding from the community and the Federal Government towards the building.” Since it commenced in 2012, Shepparton Foodshare has relied on its own fundraising efforts and community support to operate from year to year. This donation of suitable land and the $600,000 funding commitment from the Federal Government recently announced by Deputy Prime Minister, Barnaby Joyce, has given the service hope for a more secure future.

Live music is back on the to-do list By Steve Hutcheson THE country came to Shepparton on a beautiful sunny Sunday with an open-air country music festival held on the lawns of the Shepparton Showgrounds. Headlined by Lee Kernaghan, with Brad Cox, Casey Barnes, Felicity Urquhart, Andrew Swift and The Davidson Brothers, plus many more incredible artists, the inaugural festival was a day of country fun. The winners of the Goulburn Valley Country Music Showcase are Jade Gibson, JB & Me, Kane Vincent and Madi Walker who all performed to open the show. Picking the Goulburn Valley for the festival was an easy decision for organisers. They are no strangers to putting on events in the region and feel a real affinity with the area. “For those from greater Melbourne and outside of the Goulburn Valley, be prepared to fall in,” says festival director, Aidan McLaren. “Our ticketing and attendee data shows that a lot of people are travelling from outside of the area to attend. The knock-on effects of this to local business is immense as many of these people will be staying overnight in Shepparton, and most likely exploring some of the amazing places the region has to offer. The event itself also engages many local contractors and businesses. It is also a chance for the community to connect with each other.

Festivals bring plenty to do in Shepparton A ROARING SUCCESS...Jade Gibson, a winner in the Goulburn Valley Country Music Showcase, was the opening act at the Shepparton Country Music Festival. Photo: Steve Hutcheson

“After the last two years we’ve all had, I think that’s really important and something we are all looking forward to.” said Aidan. Judging from the turnout of cowboy boots and ten-gallon hats, a lot of people felt the same as they rocked to the sounds of guitars and country vocals.

By Deanne Jeffers AFTER being postponed due to Covid in 2020 and then 2021, the Land of Plenty festival did not disappoint. Thousands were in attendance at the Shepparton Showgrounds on Saturday. The complete line-up featured something for everyone, inviting huge acts like Drapht, BodyJar, G-Flip, Ball Park Music, Vince the Kid, and much more to grace the stage. There were also DJ acts between sets, food trucks, art installations, rides and a heap of other attractions creating a ‘Coachella-esque’ gala.

Have you met Rikkie-Lee Tyrrell, One Nation candidate for Nicholls? MEET YOUR CANDIDATE... Rikkie-Lee Tyrrell is One Nation’s candidate for Nicholls. Photo: Supplied.

One Nation candidate for Nicholls WHERE ARE YOU FROM, AND HOW DID YOU FIND YOUR WAY TO SHEPPARTON/ THE NICHOLLS ELECTORATE? I was born in Wagga Wagga NSW, moved to Bermagui NSW at the age of 14 and settled in Victoria in 2014. My husband and I purchased our first dairy farm in

Invergordon in 2018. We still reside in Invergordon today on another dairy after selling ours six months ago. WHAT PRIMARY, HIGH SCHOOL AND UNI DID YOU GO TO? South Wagga Primary School, Wagga Wa g g a Te c h nolo g y H i g h S c ho ol , Narooma High School (finishing year 12 in 2000) WHAT DO YOU DO HERE? I have been managing One Nations Victorian team this past term on a volunteer basis and also working on the Dairy Farm my husband manages. WHAT'S THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB? I enjoy the people I get to meet and learn from in both my work in politics and in the Agricultural Industry. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING OUTSIDE OF WORK?

I enjoy camping along the Murray River with my family, extended family and friends. Here we have no phone reception to interfere with our down time and enjoyment of nature. I love fishing and sharing a laugh around the campfire. WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT SHEPPARTON? I love the people. Everyone is always happy to say g'day, answer a question if asked and the community offers a diverse array of cultures to learn from. WHAT'S ONE THING YOU WOULD CHANGE ABOUT SHEPPARTON TO IMPROVE IT? Energy. I would like to see energy costs drop to encourage more businesses to open and create more jobs for our locals, lower our own power bills at home and reduce the cost of living for Nicholls residents.

$15.4M to support agricultural shows AGRICULTURAL shows have been a hit during the pandemic and these regional institutions, like the Shepparton Agricultural Show, which has been cancelled two years in a row, are largely kept alive by volunteers. The Federal Government has previously supported ag shows by providing income support of up to $7,000. Last week in Shepparton Minister for Agriculture and Northern Australia David Littleproud, and Federal Member for Nicholls, Damian Drum revealed a $15.4M program to support infrastructure growth. Small agricultural show societies can apply for grants up to $500,000 for repairs, upgrades, building, or buying showground infrastructure or attractions. Sue Trevaskis, president of the Shepparton Agricultural Society, said that financial help was important so that the Shepp Show could offer many free and low-cost activities for attendees and to maintain the grounds for clubs, organisations and events that use the Showgrounds. “With this grant we can put the money towards better facilities here and updating our current secretary’s office, which was a previous kindergarten that needs new floor coverings and kitchen.”

WHAT ARE THREE WORDS YOU WOULD USE TO DESCRIBE SHEPPARTON, OR THE ELECTORATE OF NICHOLLS? Australian, Progressive, Regional.

GRAND FUNDING... Minister for Agriculture and Northern Australia David Littleproud, president of the Shepparton Agricultural Society Sue Trevaskis, Nationals candidate for Nicholls Sam Birrell, and Federal Member for Nicholls Damian Drum. Photo: Deanne Jeffers.

“If the society doesn’t have to fundraise to build buildings, then we can put that money back into what we can have at the show that will be free for families to come to and keeping costs down.” “It’s an acknowledgment of what they’ve done but also what they can achieve in the future,” said Minister Littleproud. “It’s very hard to save year after year after year to put towards infrastructure,” he said. “The grants provide regional communities with the opportunity to make showground facilities safe, attractive and accessible for showground users and the six million annual visitors."

Bunnies and bonnets By Stephanie Holliday EASTER cheer and celebrations were in full swing at Tatura Children’s Centre last Wednesday afternoon with kinder children showcasing their creative flair in an Easter bonnet parade. LABOR IN DISGUISE Dear Editor, Why haven’t the Labor Party preselected a candidate in Nicholls yet? Is it because Labor think they have already got one - just one who wears orange and not red? By the way Rob Priestly continuously criticizes the coalition government, I think that this is the case. I worry that a vote for Priestly will end up being a vote for Albanese. Luke Allison Major Plains ECHUCA CANDIDATE FORUM Dear Editor, I watched the Nicholls Candidate forum organised by the Committee for Echuca Moama online and I would observe that amongst the grandstanding, negativity and conspiracy theories, there was only one speaker who talked clearly and concisely about actual issues and projects in Nicholls, and real solutions. That was the Nationals candidate,

Sam Birrell. I was curious as to how the Nationals would go when Damian Drum, who has served the electorate well, decided to retire. They appear to have found themselves a highly capable and dynamic candidate, and this should bode well for them in the upcoming election. Warren Smith Mooroopna GREAT TIME AT GARDEN SHOW Dear Mark Niglia, I read the article in The Adviser last week about your sculpture and I was going to the International Garden Show. I cut the article out and took it with me. When I found the sculpture exhibition tent, I showed the article to a man called Paul. He very kindly took me over to it and told me how clever you are with your sculpture. It was such a thrill for this little old lady from Shepparton to see a local talented artist on display there. Thank you for the thrill that you have given me.

Yours sincerely, Naomi Lovehead Shepparton GOOD DEEDS Dear Editor, A big thank you to Mick wearing a Kenworth shirt and driving a white work ute. On a Saturday afternoon last month, my elderly mum who is in a wheelchair was stranded when the wheel came off her chair. We were in Johnson Street, near the railway line waiting for a wheelchair taxi when Mick asked if we needed help. He managed to put the wheel back on and saved the day. What they didn’t teach you in school By Deanne Jeffers S T U DE N T S at Greater Sheppa r ton Secondary College are learning to apply ‘human design thinking’ and to use new technologies to solve problems of the present in future forward ways. Box Hill Institute has brought modern technology and ideas to Shepparton to inspire students. Industry leaders came along to check out what they were doing and to scope out future talent. “We already pay thousands of dollars to do what we see the students are doing in class today,” said Guthrie McGoldrick Consulting Engineers operations manager, Michael Coggan. Students could try out 3D printers, including a 3D food printer, troubleshoot solar technology, learn coding and consider

future solutions to current problems by using new technologies. “3D programs are what we’re training our existing staff in right now. When we get people come to us and they’re only used to doing everything in 2D, we’re forcing them to go into 3D. Once you do it once, you can start anything. So, what the teenagers are learning is more than relatable.” He said engineers at Guthrie McGoldrick Consulting use a program that shows in real time where wires are behind walls, saving workers time and money across industries. “That’s the kind of level that this stuff goes to, and it is actually phenomenal and to be exposing young people to these ideas now is amazing,” said Mr Coggan.

AS part of the Shepparton Master Plan, the former Word and Mouth building in the southwest corner of Queens Gardens has been demolished by Greater Shepparton City Council as part of the Master Plan development progression. The Master Plan was developed in 2010 after consultation with a number of user groups and was updated in 2015 to correlate with the next phase of works. The removal of the building will allow for extension of the pathway and pergola connecting

Wyndham Street to Welsford Street along the southern boundary. The building was once used as a site for maternal health checks. “ Work s h ave o c c u r re d ove r t he years at the Queens Gardens with the guidance of the Master Plan. These works will enable the space to be more open and user friendly. We ask residents to please be mindful of the works,” said Greater Shepparton city council director infrastructure Gary Randhawa.

Job applicants don't even need to have any experience in the employment services industry to be part of this new wave of first-class job coaches. What makes a successful Asuria job coach/mentor is a combination of empathy, the ability to build relationships, a commitment to excellent customer service, and everyday office skills, with things like Microsoft Office, Word, or Excel. More than anything though, Asuria is looking for people with a passion for helping others. Cynthia Jennings, a community engagement officer, says of her experience with Asuria, "At Asuria, we're all a part of something which we call 'Enterprising Heart', which really sums up what it's like to be part of the company." When it comes to what being an Asuria job coach/ mentor, or community engagement officer is all about, Cynthia said, "The way I help participants discover their dream roles is by really sitting down and getting to know them, building a rapport with them, and establishing trust and understanding." salute to veterans

Let’s imagine IT’S Easter time, and you’re all packed up and prepared for your long-awaited trip to visit family or enjoy some relaxation. You’ve done a final check and it looks like you’ve packed enough, but have you prepped for the actual journey to your destination? Are you well rested, well fed and have you ensured you’re prepared for a drive that’s as free from distraction as possible? Post-COVID, many of us are only now finding ourselves taking long car trips after constant lockdowns rendered us unable to do so. We may have also noticed the driving skills of our loved ones and even ourselves have diminished after such an extended period of adhering to stay at home orders. Roadsafe Goulburn Valley exectutive officer, Bill Winters, wishes for everyone to slow down, pace themselves and ensure they arrive at their destination safely.

“It’s not a race,” Mr Winters said. “It’s all about choices and planning. It’s easy to prepare for a a long car journey by imagining what you’ll need on the ride and how you can guarantee you’ll be at your best. Make sure you get enough rest the night before and you have easily accessible fluids that aren’t distracting to access.” If you are driving long distances, take rest breaks and do not speed. A road crash will change your life forever and that of many others. Stop the car, rest up, let your people know you’re safe and continue driving with a clear mind. Currently, there is already a 9.4 percent increase on last year’s lives lost tally, with the rural Victorian statistics faring worse than that of metropolitan Melbourne. Do your part this holiday period to avoid contributing to the huge ripple effect that trauma road incidents bring.

recommended for all people aged 6 months and over. The highest level of protection occurs in the first 3 to 4 months following vaccination. Annual vaccination should ideally occur before the onset of each influenza season. This is usually from June

Don’t Get Burned...

Learn First Aid CAMPFIRES are among the leading causes of burn injuries. According to Kid Safe Victoria, more than 1,000 children between 0–4 years are treated for burns and scalds in hospital every year. To prevent your child being burnt by a campfire; maintain adequate supervision, teach them how to behave around fires and have a wellstocked first aid kit in the event of an injury. If your child sustains a burn, correct first aid can impact the way the burn heals. 1. Remove clothing, nappies, and jewellery from the area 2. Run under cool water

Ms Lovell said that alcohol and drug addiction had impacted every corner of Victorian society and had caused widespread devastation in communities throughout the state, particularly in regional Victoria, in her contribution directed to the Minister for Mental Health James Merlino. A failure to establish adequate rehabilitation facilities in the regions, causes patients to leave their support networks and travel long distances to get the help they need. Ms Lovell said the lack of residential rehabilitation centres in regional areas such as Shepparton and Mildura had been identified by Infrastructure Victoria. “Addiction is a devasting illness that can be managed but never cured and

sufferers should have the chance to access professional treatment in their own community where they have the love and support of their family to aid their recovery,” said Ms Lovell. Mr Merlino was asked to commit

funding in the upcoming 2022-23 State Budget to establish residential drug and alcohol rehabilitation centres in both Shepparton and Mildura, to provide the vital services that locals suffering from addiction in these areas need.

ROUND 2 HEATS UP...Round 2 is underway and Sam Saracino has given us his predictions. Pictured is a ripper match between the Kyabram Bombers and Shepparton Swans from the 2021 season. Photo: Supplied

Football Tips R2 UNITED V SHEPPARTON The stakes are high for these two Deakin Reserve co-tenants on this traditional Good Friday showdown. Both started with defeats on the opening day of the new season – the Bears well beaten by Mooroopna and the Dees going down to Greater Shepparton rival the Shepparton Swans. The challenge for both coaches will be to get some small wins along this journey of re-build. Both have a bulk of young players in their squads, with the Bears slightly more experienced. Bears’ coach Ted Lindon led by example last week in his return to the league while evergreen midfilder Nick Allan, defender Mitchell Brett, premiership forward Anthony Andronaco and the returning Tyler Larkin were some of the better players in the loss to the Cats. Edward Adams, Adam Pigatto, Joel Serra, Sheldon Bogdan and Blake Serra were the four quarter contributors in the loss to the Swans last weekend. They will again need to play well and the Demons will be looking for a greater contribution from the few experienced heads in the squad to try and lead them to victory. Tip: Shepparton.

MOOROOPNA V SWANS Mooroopna made the best possible start in its quest to chalk up the necessary number of wins to play finals in 2022. They were able to make light work of the team that beat them twice by a point in 2021 last weekend. That would have pleased coach John Lamont. That said, Lamont knows they need to back it up today and not get ahead of themselves or else the Swans will fly away with the win. Keelin Betson, Jack Hunt, Ryan Kilpatrick, Mitchell Jones and Lucas Caccaviello were outstanding last weekend and they will be crucial to nullifying the likes of Mitchell Bell, Nathan Rachele (five goals), Bryden Squire, Zac Banch and Rylen Damianopoulos. Tip: Mooroopna.

ECHUCA V EUROA

Echuca will be looking to confirm its early status of premiership favourite when it welcomes another challenger in Euroa today. The Magpies need to get back on the horse after suffering what some would say was an upset at the hands of Mansfield last weekend. But make no mistake about it, Mansfield will win more than it loses in 2022, so that loss may not be so bad in the bigger picture. Pies coach Scott Rowan will look to Andrew Smith, Marcus Varley, Ben Giobbi, Jacob Gleeson and Jack Frewen to lead the way. He doesn’t need to look any further than last year for motivation, knowing that his chargers were able to defeat Echuca. Co-coaches Simon Maddox and Andrew Walker are two smart operators. They will be wary of that but at the same time back their troops to play the game on their terms. Logan Prout, Jack Evans, Liam Tenace, Benjamin Reid and Ruory Kirkby will be crucial for the Green Machine to remain undefeated and I think they will get the points. Tip: Echuca. A

Benalla will be looking to bounce back after an opening day loss to Seymour while Tatura will be looking to take some of its good form from a narrow loss to Kyabram to the Benalla Showgrounds today. The Bulldogs were good in patches against the reigning premier and coach Paul Kirby will be hoping his chargers can use the ball better forward of the centre. Joshua Marchbank, William Martiniello, Samuel Harris, Jordan Wolff and Jack Doidge will be some of the Saints that will be looking to lift their team off the canvas. Billy Copper, James Bennett, Brad Ryan, Aubrey Coote and Mitchell Elliott will be important to get enough ball to their forwards to ensure they can come away from Benalla victorious. Tip: Tatura.

shake off a gallant challenge from Tatura while Rochester was well beaten by its rival Echuca last weekend. Lachlan Smith was easily the best man on the ground last weekend. He was allowed to do as he liked and that will be something Rochester’s Steve Stroobants will be wary of to ensure he is made accountable. Zachary Keogh, Kyle Mueller (could easily have kicked more than 3 goals had he kicked straight), Kaine Herbert, Cade Mueller and Jason Morgan will be vital in trying to ensure the Bombers go 2-0. Joseph Atley, Christopher Jansen, Shaun Atley, Jordan Harper and Blake Evans were the key contributors in the defeat to Echuca. That said, Stroobants will be hoping to have Doug Wren back to add more class to its midfield. It is a huge game for the Tigers who will want to avoid going 0-2 while the Bombers know

MANSFIELD V SEYMOUR

last week’s victories by both teams. The Eagles had a strong four quarter win over Euroa and Ben Davey will be wary of the home team’s capabilities. He knows they will be in for a fight if last year’s match-up as an indication. Eagles coach Chad Owens will back his team in to get the job done. They were one of the form teams when the season was cut short by Covid-19. Owens knows that his defence has a big job in nullifying Michael Hartley (10 goals last weekend). Lachlan Waite, Riley Mason, Ben Rigoni and Jack Murphy will be other important players for the visitors and Davey will be hoping to welcome back a few more regulars from injury today. Tom McDonagh, Cameron Arnold, William Chiller, James Herridge and Patrick Marks will be important as will Will Foster who helped himself to a bag of 10 when the teams last played in 2021. Tip: Mansfield.

2026 Commonwealth Games to be held in Victoria THE state of Victoria has been announced as the host of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with the state’s regional cities set to shine on the world stage. The announcement by the Commonwealth Games Federation comes after a period of exclusive negotiations, w it h C om monwe a lt h G a m e s Au s t ra l i a a nd t he Government last month submitting a delivery concept for consideration. It is estimated the 2026 Commonwealth Games will contribute more than $3B to Victoria’s economy, creating more than 600 full-time equivalent jobs before the Games, 3,900 jobs during the Games and a further 3,000 jobs beyond the Closing Ceremony. Four regional hubs will be established in Geelong, Bendigo, Ballarat and Gippsland, each with their own athletes’ village and sport program. The regional hubs will host athletes, officials and fans following an Opening Ceremony at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground, using Melbourne as the gateway to regional Victoria. Shepparton will also host sporting and cultural events as part of Victoria 2026. There will also be a strong para sport program, with six sports already locked in. Further work is being done with the Commonwealth Games Federation and Commonwealth GamesAustralia to determine if additional sports will be included in the Victoria 2026 program, which may open opportunities for other locations to host events.

A Victoria-wide program of live sites and activations will ensure visitors are welcomed in every corner of the state, with the Queen’s Baton Relay to traverse the regions

in the weeks leading up to the Opening Ceremony. For more information, and to express interest in being involved, visit vic.gov.au/victoria2026.

GVL netball round 2 previews by Sam Saracino SHEPPARTON UNITED V SHEPPARTON Shepparton United will be looking to make it two wins on the bounce when it takes on arch rival Shepparton. Coach Kara Blizzard will be warning her players against getting ahead of themselves despite a comprehensive first up win over the Shepparton Swans. Despite a first up loss to the Cats, Blizzard knows the Bears will lift for this game. She will be hoping the likes of Zoe Davies, Laura Cole and Jesse Barnes can led from the front to keep the likes of Ella Sidebottom, Bree Robinson and Jacinta Todd at bay. The depth and balance of the Demons will be enough to condemn the Bears to a 0-2 start to the season and remain undefeated. Tip: United.

BENALLA V TATURA Both are searching for their first wins of the season after opening day defeats. Tatura suffered somewhat of an upset when it was beaten by Kyabram. The Bulldogs did well to finish inside the top six in 2021 before Covid-19 ended the season. They will to need to improve as it is evident from the round one results that some teams from the lower half of the ladder will jump up in 2022. Kelsey Pallpratt, Chole Hill and Kellie Keen will be trying to help the Saints rebound from the heavy defeat at the hands of premiership fancy Seymour while Steph Smith-Gorrie and Elise Boyer will be doing their bit to try and lead their team to victory. Tip: Tatura.

KYABRAM V ROCHESTER This should be a tight contest with Kyabram looking to make it two wins on the bounce. Rochester will be looking to bounce back after a first-up loss to Echuca, but it will find it tough against a Bombers’ outfit that will have a spring in their step after an upset win over Tatura last weekend. Chicky Vick and Alyssa Trebilcock held their own in attack in the win over the

Bulldogs, while Jemma Hall worked well in her new position in goal defence. The Tigers will look to some of its youngsters to follow the lead of its more experienced players to try and upstage Kyabram. Tip: Kyabram.

ECHUCA V EUROA This will be a challenge for both for different reasons. Euroa scored a big win over Mansfield that was led by coach Ellie Warnock in defence, Kellie Davidson through the mid-court and new recruit Bridget Hill in attack. Tylah Marchbank and Karly Wappett were also contributors in the win. Warnock will have her hands full taking on the dynamic shooting pairing of Bianca Willis and Belinda Lees while coach Steph Vick and Gina Pearson will be crucial to ensure the goalers get the supply.Tip: Echuca.

intercepts in the second half, which allowed the Lions to push away from the Saints while midcourter Rosie O’Sullivan rewarded

the defence by end with her direct passing and vision into the ring, which allowed her to be the best on the court. Tip: Seymour.

MOOROOPNA V SWANS Mooroopna will be out to continue its winning form when it hosts the winless Shepparton Swans. Cats’ shooter Elle Brooks was a particular standout up forward, with support from fellow younggun Dayna Williams in attack last weekend. If this pairing gets on top, the Swans will struggle to go with them. Captain Maddison Wong was as solid as ever at the back, while Paigan Impey and Shelby Britten will also be out to continue their good form while the Swans will turn to gun shooter Sophie Atkinson, Klarindah Hudson and Kristy Down to have big games to be any chance of victory. Tip: Mooroopna.

MANSFIELD V SEYMOUR Seymour will be out to make it two wins on the bounce when it travels to Mansfield. The Eagles were beaten by Euroa last weekend while the Lions had a big win over Benalla. Nakita Singe and Casey Adamson were outstanding in pressuring the Saints last weekend and creating turnovers. Cou r t ney A ldous took some cr ucial
