Progress on regional vision BEING SOMETHING AND DOING SOMETHING... Candidate for Nicholls, Sam Birrell, lists reasons he is running with the Nationals in the upcoming Federal Election following a funding promise for a new Clinical Health School in Shepparton. Photo: Supplied.

Written by Sam Birrell, Nationals candidate for Nicholls AS I stood with the Deputy Prime Minister and Regionalisation Minister on a chilly morning for the announcement of $19.5M for a Clinical Health School to be built in Shepparton, three things are on my mind: The first is why I am doing this – running for parliament? It is all about doing something. It is not about me, though it feels like that now with the posters and advertisements. Politics divides into two motivations – being something and doing something. I want to do, not just talk, and this funding announcement is an example of that. The second is that great projects are real partnerships between government and community. This Clinical Health School idea was developed between Goulburn Valley Health, who need more allied health staff, and La Trobe University, who want to train more allied health staff. It was advocated for by the Committee for Greater Shepparton and the Council. The thing I like about the Nationals is that central control in Canberra doesn’t dream up what might be good for regional communities and then send it out, we partner with the expertise on the ground.
The third reason is that although there have been distinguished people here – The vice-chancellor of the University, the CEO of GV Health and the senior politicians, it is not about them. It is about the people who train in this facility and who go on to have a rewarding career looking after people.
Politics divides into two motivations – being something and doing something. I want to do, not just talk, and this funding announcement is an example of that. Sam Birrell Nationals candidate for Nicholls It is also about the people who receive this care, whether in an emergency department, aged care facility or hospital ward.

CAMPING AND WASTE... Bins were overflowing, and rubbish was spread across the ground last weekend at multiple sites across Murchison, after the influx of campers to the Goulburn River. Photo: Kelly Carmody
By Kelly Carmody EVERY year over the Easter long weekend many tourists flock to the river's edge in Murchison. Whether it be for some fishing or some camping relaxation among the beauty of the Goulburn River or for a bit of both, unfortunately though every year when they leave, their rubbish stays behind piling up on the streets around Murchison's parks and shops and left scattered along the river. Murchison Fire Bridge CFA (Country Fire Authority), captain, Thaniel Meyer stated that this year when fire fighters went down to the river to do their bit for the ‘Good Friday Appeal’ and help with getting some donations on the banks, that there were quite a few
campers around. “It was again a busy Easter weekend, every year they are getting bigger. Most campers complied with the current rules, however there were some camps who had to be educated about the importance of a safe fire. The biggest issue was all the rubbish. It is noticeably clear that Murchison needs more public bins to help accommodate for the influx of campers around these areas, not only over Easter but throughout the year,” said the captain. To have your say on how you think Murchison can combat the local ‘rubbish’ issue that is left behind from campers, please email The Shepparton Adviser at editorial@ sheppartonadviser.com.au

THE unmissable 43-metres-tall Campbell’s Soup Can looks more sparkly after the tower holding the giant 10m tall can was washed. Stationed outside Arnott’s Group factory in Shepparton, the soup can is actually a water tank used for holding and maintaining constant potable water supply for factory use, with a capacity of 275,000L. The clean out is done as part of scheduled maintenance inspection or as required as part of general site maintenance.

Growing more local job opportunities By Deanne Jeffers A VISIT from the Minister for Regional Development, Mary-Anne Thomas, recently has reinforced the State Government’s commitment to a local program helping people who face barriers finding work in the community. T he Sheppa r ton G row i ng Reg ion a l Opportunities for Work (GROW) program is one of five GROW initiatives across the state to benefit from an additional $3M announced in the Victorian Budget 2021/22. Since beginning in Shepparton in 2018, GROW has supported more than 250 people to find work. Many would remember the peak of the
pandemic in the region, when 20,000 residents were placed in snap isolation, affecting key goods and services. At that time, GROW was able to assist two Shepparton Woolworths stores find staff urgently. During her visit, Minister Thomas visited Billabong Garden Complex, where GROW has worked with operators, ConnectGV, to support locals with a disability to learn new skills working in a propagation nursery. Member for Northern Victoria, Mark Gepp said, “This funding ensures GROW can continue its important work in tackling disadvantage and addressing barriers to employment by creating more jobs and boosting our regional economies.”
“We are supporting people of all-abilities and those from cultural and linguistically diverse backgrounds to find employment – the GROW program is a terrific initiative helping more people find jobs and support local businesses," said Minister Thomas.

GREATER Shepparton City Council have released the 2022/23 Draft Budget to the community, now available on their website. Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe said the 2022/23 Draft Budget considers the activities and initiatives contributing to achieving the strategic objectives specified in the 2021-2025 Council Plan and 2021-2031 Financial Plan. “The Draft Budget proposes a capital works program of $49.77M. This will focus heavily on investing in our existing assets with 89 percent of the capital works program to be spent on upgrade and renewal programs projects, including $6.15M on Knight and Hawdon Street upgrade, and $5.21M on the Fryers Street and Railway Parade upgrade,” she said. The Budget sets where Council allocate funding for the provision of capital works and delivery of services for the next financial year.
The community can influence the allocation of funds by making a submission to Council on what services, programs, and facilities they believe should receive funding. “Over the years, Council has actioned this feedback in supporting such projects as the Aquamoves outdoor pool heating, Hastie Street Tatura pedestrian crossing, and Tatura Museum Extension. We truly value what our community has to say, and I encourage everyone to take this time to provide a submission. Now is the time to have your say,” said Mayor O’Keeffe. We welcome Letters to the Editor but they are not guaranteed to be included and may be edited for reasons of style or content. Letters will not be eligible for consideration if they contain defamatory material, or information of a personal nature which is not in the public domain.
I was proud that this was the idea of the Greater Shepparton City Council. I am so disappointed that Shepparton has missed out on any of the events, with hubs going to Bendigo, Ballarat, Gippsland and

Geelong. Commonwealth Games are in the remit of the Victorian State Government. Did n’t Sheppa r ton’s state member Suzanna Sheed tell us that by voting independent “we would get our fair share"? This is another example of this being a Furphy. I’m sure the same claim was made by Mildura’s Independent Member where they’ve missed out as well. This only proves once again just how easily overlooked by government and ineffective Independents are. Kevin Reid Shepparton
SEIZE THE MOMENT Dear Editor, IT’S exciting to see the Nicholls electorate on the cusp of creating real change with the growing community movement supporting Rob Priestly. SUNDAY 8 MAY 2022
Origin of
Mother’s Day
MUMS didn’t invent Mother’s Day so they could get breakfast in bed and maybe a cheeky present (although that’s a great bonus), the origin of Mother’s Day as we know it took place in the early 1900s. Anna Jarvis started a campaign for an official holiday honoring mothers in 1905, the year her own mother died. The first larger-scale celebration of the holiday was in 1908, when Jarvis held a public memorial for her mother in her hometown of Grafton, West Virginia, USA.Over the next few years, Jarvis pushed to have the holiday officially recognised, and it was celebrated increasingly in more and more states around the USA. Finally, in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation making Mother’s Day an official holiday, to take place the second Sunday of May. Anna Jarvis put Mother’s Day on the calendar as a day dedicated to expressing love and gratitude to
mothers, acknowledging the sacrifices women make for their children. It didn’t take off in Australia until 1923, when the late Mrs. Janet Heyden was concerned over lonely, forgotten aged mothers in Sydney’s Newington State Hospital, where she visited an old friend regularly. She started a campaign throughout the city for donations to buy presents for these women. Newspapers carried her appeals, while she made personal requests to many of Sydney’s leading business houses. The response amounted to a ton of donations, which were stored in the Sydney Feminist Club. They ranged from talcum powder and soap to knitted scarves and mittens. Confectionery manufacturers, leading firms and the Sydney Fruit Market all contributed toward Mrs Heyden’s gifts for ‘her’ lonely mothers, and the rest is history.

GOULBURN VIBES, Illuminate, a range of festivals like Land of Plenty, GV Country Music, and Treaty Festival, plus so much more has kept local people busy while attracting many visitors to the area. There is so much happening, you could say that we’re all making up for lost time. For many event organisers and venues, they would remember heading into winter last year or in 2020, and the disappointment of having to cancel events and close doors to patrons. As the weather continues to cool, there is no shortage of events and activities lined up,
as well as a revitalised hospitality scene to warm up by the fire and catch up with friends. One of the biggest events this winter is White Night, coming to Shepparton for the first time this June. There will be loads of other family-friendly activities, like Wolfgang’s Magical Musical Circus and Silver’s Circus, plus heaps on offer for lovers of animals, cars, art, or all the above. IN THE GOULBURN AND MURRAY VALLEY’S
Hotel demolished
THE historic Shepparton Hotel has at last been demolished, reduced to rubble on the corner of High and Wyndham Streets. The building burnt to the ground in 2007 and has been left mostly untouched for the last 15 years. After being evaluated last year, Council declared what was left of the two-storey brick building to be unsafe. After the owners failed to undertake necessary remedial works to retain the historic site, Council ordered the building to be demolished. Over the weekend of April 9-10, excavators worked swiftly to have the site reduced to a singlestorey. By Monday, all that was left was a pile of bricks and some exterior walls that have since been removed. Ongoing works have continued in order to clear the site entirely.

New freedoms for Victorians IN time for the long weekend, vaccination, venue check-in, and mask requirements were wound back across Victoria. Health Minister Martin Foley announced the changes to the state’s Covid restrictions last Wednesday, alongside chief officer Brett Sutton, citing high rates of vaccination as the basis for the changes. “This sensible easing of restrictions is only possible because we are one of the most vaccinated societies in the world with almost 70 percent of Victorian adults already armed with their third dose,” said Mr Foley. “The vaccinated economy kept Victorians
safe, and bu sinesses open during an unpredictable time when we saw our highest case numbers ever - but now is the right time to set it aside and focus on the highest risk settings.” Some key developments that will benefit pubs and clubs are: • Patrons no longer are required to show proof of vaccination at any venue • Check-ins are no longer required at any venue Masks are no longer required in schools, hospitality, retail or at any events • Events with more than 30,000 people will no longer require public health pre-approval
• People who have had COVID-19 will now be exempt from testing or quarantine for 12 weeks, up from 8 weeks; and -Individuals will be required to notify their workplace and social contacts. Workplaces will not have to notify exposed workers. Furthermore, all restrictions in hospitals, except for mask-wearing, are removed; and close contacts no longer need to quarantine but they must wear a mask indoors, avoid sensitive settings, and record at least five negative RATs over the seven days that would have been the self-quarantine period.
RESTRICTIONS WOUND BACK... From Friday, many restrictions were reduced. Patrons in hospitality venues and retail businesses no longer need to check-in or show proof of vaccination upon entry. Photo: Supplied.

The Bears have just done what they needed to do in skipping past arch rival Shepparton United on the Easter weekend and then the Shepparton Swans last weekend. Tatura will look to have a few seasoned senior boys back that missed last week. For the Bears, Jacob Watts, coach Edward Lindon, premiership wingman Jordan McGregor, Tyler Bell, Hamish Rowlands and key forward Anthony Andronaco (three goals last week) will be crucial in trying to guide them to the win. Tip: Shepparton.
The Pies broke their duck last weekend with a solid four quarter effort to get past Seymour. They will be keen to build on that and inflict a third straight defeat on the home team. In the end, I think the bigger and stronger bodies of the Magpies will be too much for the Swans. Tip: Euroa.

By Sam Saracino TATURA V SHEPPARTON Shepparton will be out to make two wins on the bounce when it travels across to Tatura. The home team is winless after losses to Rochester, Kyabram and Benalla. And, it doesn’t get any easier today against the Bears. Tip: Shepparton. SHEPPARTON UNITED V ROCHESTER Shepparton United will be looking to continue their good start to 2022 when it welcomes the improved Rochester. Goal Attack Georgia Walpole and fellow shooter Jessie Barnes were important in the thrilling win over Mooroopna last weekend. Some of the team’s other younger members like Laura Cole stood tall in what was a high intensity contest. Tip: Shepparton United. SEYMOUR V MOOROOPNA Seymour and Mooroopna will be looking to bounce back after both lost last weekend. The Cats were pipped by the Demons in a highly entertaining clash while the Lions were upset by

Euroa. Maddison Wong had a fantastic dual last weekend with Jessie Barnes and she will again be important in trying to keep the Lion goalers at bay. Seymour coach, Ellie O’Sullivan, will be hoping her girls can bounce back after a shock loss to Euroa last weekend. She knows it won’t be easy against a well-balanced Mooroopna team who are well drilled. Tip: Mooroopna. SHEPPARTON SWANS V EUROA Shepparton Swans will be searching for its first win of the
season when it welcomes Euroa today. The Swans are a work in progress under Courtney Simpson. She has already blooded a number of the club’s young talent which will set them up for the future. Today, Shinea Sali, Hannah Garner, youngster Emelia Mercuri will be looking to try lead the team to their first win. Kellie Davidson, Karly Wappett and Tylah Marchbank were outstanding in the win against Seymour. The trio will be crucial in trying to help the team to back-to-back wins. Tip: Euroa. BENALLA V KYABRAM This should be a fantastic game between two teams that are evenly matched and on the rise. Kyabram has had a win, draw and loss in its opening three games of 2022, while Benalla has won its past two games. The Bombers are a vastly improved outfit under the guidance of Sara Kent. They will be keen to curb the influence of Benalla shooter Sally Washfold while Chloe Hill will be vital if the Saints are to get another win. Tip: Kyabram. ECHUCA V MANSFIELD Echuca will look to remain undefeated when it welcomes the winless Mansfield today. Coach Steph Vick hopes to welcome back a few regulars who missed last week’s character-building win over Kyabram. That said, Georgie Eishold stepped up from B-grade and may have done enough to retain her spot in the lineup. While, the Eagles will be desperate to stay in the game for longer periods than they have done to date. Tip: Echuca.
Ardy Bushcats mean business for next season NEW goal posts at Ardmona Recreation Reserve are in the ground and looking great. Despite going into recess for the season, Ardmona Football Club is busy preparing for the following year by ticking off some ‘club goals’, so they can kick more goals next season. The original goal posts were removed
earlier this year to be replaced with longawaited, refurbished goal posts provided by Intrack Systems Australia and funded by Ardmona Football Club secretary, Justin Arrowsmith. The former posts were as old as the club itself, which reached their centennial year in 2020. Unfortunately, the Ardy Bushcats made
the difficult decision to go into recess this season, citing hardships securing enough players or coaches to participate. “Netball was ready to play but the league law says they cannot play without a footy senior team,” said Mr Arrowsmith. This year is proving to be a pivotal time to strengthen the Ardmona FNC, after the pandemic took a profound toll
