RAISING AWARENESS... Amy and Michael Dann are passionate about raising awareness for their fouryear-old son Louis’s health condition, CDG. Pictured, Amy, Michael, Louis and Isaiah. Photo: Kelly Carmody

“Life is as good as you choose it to be”

Amy Dann joins worldwide board By Kelly Carmody CONGENITAL disorders of glycosylation (CDG) is an umbrella term for a rapidly expanding group of over 160 rare genetic/ metabolic disorders. Due to rare defects in a complex chemical process known as glycosylation, Amy and Michael Dann’s fouryear-old son Louis is one of only a few people here in Australia and the world, that is affected by it.

Since Louis’s diagnosis in 2018, Amy and Michael have strived to raise funds and awareness for CDG Care, a cause that is close to their heart. They are extremely passionate about helping educate other families about CDG and are hopeful that scientific research on these rare conditions will provide more answers for an earlier diagnosis and more treatment options. Net Zero made reality in Shepparton LA TROBE University’s Shepparton and Mildura campuses are the first in the state to officially achieve Net Zero targets. A range of projects have been implemented across both campuses, including the installation of rooftop solar panels, energy efficient LED lights, mechanical system efficiency upgrades, and batteries to store solar energy. University vice-chancellor, John Dewar AO, said he was proud of what they had been able to achieve in a short timeframe. “We announced our ambitious plan less than three years ago, in August 2019, because not only was it the right thing to do, it also made good economic and environmental sense,” Professor Dewar said. In 2021, La Trobe generated enough renewables across all campuses to power all regional campuses for the entire year. In Shepparton, solar panels alone supply 36 percent of the campus’ daytime energy use. Greater Shepparton City Council mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe, said the achievement was a positive step for the region and worked to support the need for urgent climate action. “Council are working consistently to help promote and improve the climate and sustainability of our region and it is fantastic to see

organisations across the municipality understand this need for change to maintain a safe climate for all,” Cr O’Keeffe said. La Trobe’s Shepparton and Mildura campuses received certification through Climate Active – Australia’s collective action. The campuses are the first Victorian ‘precincts’ to achieve certification. The announcement comes as part of La Trobe’s $75M commitment to becoming carbon neutral across all its campuses, including Bundoora in Melbourne by 2029. All its regional campuses are expected to reach the milestone by the end of 2022, Shepparton and Mildura being months ahead of schedule.

IN February, Amy was also appointed on the worldwide board of CDG Care, as a board of director. A role that she is passionate about alongside other parents. “I have always been interested in the research and what the funds are being spent on, we are not the only family here in Australia going through this, I want to help others and make change,” said Amy. Monday, May 16 this year is World CDG Day, an annual event that provides international focus for patient groups and families living with CDG. It is an opportunity to raise awareness and influence change, and this year Amy and Michael have organised a special event the day prior on Sunday May 15, at 12pm, at the All Abilities Playground in Shepparton. They are encouraging people to wear green and be a part of a group walk around the

fundraising such as ‘everesting,’ which was last year's challenge, so this year it will be nice to have a more relaxed feel, and just walk and talk with people,” said Michael. Louis's health at present is overall quite stable, but everyday does come with its challenges. Amy and Michael are making the most of life and family and are enjoying watching Louis grow and now play with his younger brother Isaiah. “Life is what you make of it, we have good and bad days just like everyone else. It is lovely to be surrounded by family and overall, the generosity of others. Life is as good as you choose it to be, and along the journey we are dedicated to helping others and making change,” said Amy. Delivering for Nicholls By Steve Brooks Liberal candidate for Nicholls I HAVE listened to the people of Nicholls and now seek to represent this electorate in the Federal Parliament. I am doing this because I know I can put Nicholls on the map as I tackle the big issues that matter most to all of us. As a farmer I understand that water underpins the whole economy of this region as a food producer, manufacturer, transport hub and tourist destination. As a teacher I know firsthand how important it is to support young people and families in education. I will also focus on our most vulnerable, including those in childcare and aged care, and I will address cost of living pressures. Nicholls must have a confident, strong member who will fight for our fair share of infrastructure funding, who will help fix the labour shortages. I can deliver because I will have a seat at the decision-making table. Listening to the community and crafting solutions together is the most important quality of any elected official. I prom ise you I wou ld not have supported the closing of the four public secondary schools in Shepparton, then walked away. That is what two of the other candidates did. Nor would I blame the

Candidates go head-to-head HEAR FROM YOUR CANDIDATES... Nine of the 11 candidates for the Federal seat of Nicholls answered questions at a forum last week. Photo: Deanne Jeffers.

By Deanne Jeffers YOUNG people, the environment, trust in democracy, and climate change were at the heart of the political forum and debate, when candidates for Nicholls met at Riverlinks Eastbank last week. The candidate’s forum for the seat of Nicholls was held by the Committee for Greater Shepparton and Shepparton News, with Committee CEO Linda Nieuwenhuizen and News chief correspondent Darren Linton hosting the event. Nine of 11 candidates were in attendance to answer questions from an audience of more than 200. In ballot order, these were the Nationals’ Sam Birrell, One Nations’ RikkieLee Tyrell, Labor’s Bill Lodwick, Australian Citizen Party’s Jeff Davy, United Australia’s Robert Peterson, Ian Christoe of the Greens, Andrea Otto from the Fusion Party, the Liberal’s Steve Brooks, and independent Rob Priestly. Each candidate had one minute to respond, with some questions levelled at specific candidates and most answered by the entire panel. One main line of enquiry circled around cost-of-living pressures. Sam Birrell praised the recent fuel excise, but other candidates say more needs to be done. Labor’s Bill Lodwick proposed that large corporations must be taxed to fund better health and aged care. Jeff Davy of the Citizen’s Party, a former dairy farmer says that Liberal policies have, “decimated regional industries.” Climate and water policy were other ‘hot topics’, as candidates fought to strike balance

between supporting industry and protecting our environment. United Australia’s Robert Peterson, for example, was adamant in maintaining 80 percent usual fossil fuel production until renewables are reliable, to ramp up manufacturing while avoiding rising power costs. Rikkie-Lee Tyrell announced One Nation is set to release a reformed Murray-Darling Basin Plan, she also said that it is the belief of the party that climate change is a hoax invented for government subsidies. “Is water an issue for which you would cross the floor?” Darren Linton asked Sam Birrell, Steve Brooks, and Rob Priestly. Mr Brooks said that he would always vote with his community first, Mr Birrell answered a clear, “Yes,” and Rob said due to the major parties holding dominant seats in other states, they would have no hope of progress. “It’s not that the party doesn’t understand – they understand, it’s just that we don’t hold the numbers, so in the end, our vote gets rolled in with the party.” Labor was not safe from the independent’s remark, when Rob pointed out that Labor’s reforms to water, including the SES neutrality test, has in fact hurt people and the region. “I will use my leverage every step of the way, on both sides of power to make sure that this doesn’t happen,” said Mr Priestly. The Committee for Greater Shepparton have provided a video of the forum free on YouTube for those that missed it. Watch all the action by going to www.youtube.com/ watch?v=DZu5IjPY3Pk

Carrier pigeon races SMS HIGHLIGHTING the underinvestment in telecommunications blackspots, independent candidate for Nicholls, Rob Priestly, launched 150 birds last Tuesday morning in the rural Victorian town of Wunghnu, in a race against locals trying to send text messages at the same time. The pigeons who are hot favourites to win, were released carrying a message asking for leaders of the major parties to give overlooked communities equivalent attention to all other rural electorates. “Carrier pigeons have been used for over 2,000 years and it’s frustrating that they are still the most reliable way to communicate in many parts of regional Victoria,” said Rob Priestly.

“Just one carrier pigeon would be better than a mobile phone in places like Wunghnu. As the second safest conservative seat in Australia, rural areas in Nicholls such as Wunghnu have consistently been overlooked for investment,” he added. Mr Priestly highlighted the urgent need for an upgrade to allow residents to fully participate in society. “In 2022, it’s impossible to run a business or educate your kids without reliable telecom munications. Having to travel somewhere else to get reception every time you want to phone your family or talk to colleagues is just not good enough. Every Australian deserves fair and equitable access - not just those

Battery Man needs help to expand By Deanne Jeffers RUSH WORTH’S Paul Archer, known in the community as Battery Man for his incredible work fundraising for the children’s ward at Goulburn Valley Health needs a new truck to expand the reach and value of his charity work. On top of running his own business, Natrad car radiators and air conditioning, Paul spends hours each week collecting batteries in the Goulburn Valley and Southern NSW. Every year, this venture costs him around $10,000 and $15,000 of his own money to collect and recycle batteries. Over the past 12 years, Paul has donated more than $650,000 to ensure local kids have access to adequate treatment, saving families travel and accommodation costs, and the disruption, of having to travel to Melbourne for treatment. Paul’s fundraising for the hospital and groups like the SES and Kiwanis has been so impactful that members of the community have started a GoFundMe page to raise $10,500 for a new truck that would allow Paul to grow his charity work. “With a bigger vehicle I wouldn’t need to go out for a full load and come back. I could do Berrigum and Finley in one hit.” “I’m limited with the ute. In a truck, I could collect more scrap without having to make several trips back, bringing costs way

Getting to know Jesus Christ A MEAL AND MEANINGFUL DISCUSSION... The Alpha Program is designed to introduce people to an initial proclamation of the good news of Jesus Christ. 2022 Program participants Leigh Bamford and Pat Cooper with organiser Marie Fontana. Photo: Stephanie Holliday

ALPHA is a program that has been running throughout the world by Christians of all traditions for many years, and St Brendan’s Parish has just launched the 11-week 2022 program this week. “In 2021 the first Alpha program at St Brendan’s was interrupted by COVID lockdowns, from our initial few weeks in the planned gathering setting, to one where we conducted our sessions via Zoom,” said organiser, Marie Fontana. The program will run at St Brendan’s Catholic Church, Knight Street, Shepparton, from now through to the final night on July 25, 2022. A meal is served at 6:30pm and childcare is provided for those requiring it, with sessions aiming to finish by 8:30pm. “The Alpha Program is designed to introduce people to an initial proclamation of the good news of Jesus Christ. It takes people on a journey often leading to a personal encounter with Jesus Christ. It enables people to ask

questions, share ideas, build friendships and experience the love of God through the power of the Holy Spirit,” said Marie. Alpha has a series of interactive sessions exploring the Christian faith. No two Alphas are the same, but they have three things in common: food, a talk and good conversation. “We are open to anyone within Shepparton and surrounds, with the only things required being your time and, if desired, sharing your thoughts with others in a nonjudgemental environment,” said Marie. Anyone wishing to register is asked, in the first instance, to contact the Parish Office on 5821 2633, and the staff will have an Alpha Team member contact you to answer any questions you may have. Registration is required in order to comply with COVID rules around numbers and to ensure any dietary requirements are advised, as well as childcare needs.

Big sports investment in the pipeline THE Coalition Government will commit $25M to upgrade and expand the Shepparton Sports Stadium, to transform it into the new Shepparton Sports and Events Centre. Originally built in 1972, this funding will ensure the centre can meet local demand and effectively compete with other regional cities for significant sporting events, such as state and national championships. After significant upgrades, the Shepparton Sports and Event Centre will be able to host elite netball, basketball, and other sports competitions. M inister for Reg ionalisation, Reg ional Communications, and Regional Education, Bridget McKenzie, said the redevelopment will transform the ageing centre into a state-of-the-art modern sports and events facility to service athletes from the wider Goulburn and Murray regions, benefiting a population of around 220,000 people. “A re-elected coalition government will be investing $25 million in developing this sports stadium and we're partneting with the Mayor, and the local government, who are investing $15 million,” said Senator McKenzie announcing the funding at the stadium on Monday. Nationals candidate for Nicholls, Sam Birrell, commented that the Federal Government and local Council had “stepped up to the plate.” “It’s time for the Victorian Government to come and not only put their share of funding into this project, but to make a commitment to Shepparton and Greater Shepparton for the Commonwealth Games,” he said. “Because it was Greater Shepparton that came up with the idea of a regional Commonwealth Games, and it seems that this State Government has has diverted attention away to some other regional cities.”

OPINION

Letters to the Editor SOCIAL HOUSING ALTERNATIVES WELCOME

I write in response to Ann Telford’s letter printed in the Shepparton News 20/4/22. I am glad to hear that Beyond Housing’s board is welcoming community input and collaboration for their new community housing proposal to ensure that it achieves the best possible outcomes for the future tenants and the community. Residents for a Greater Shepparton would be pleased to work with Beyond Housing and Wintringham on alternative proposals to the carpark development. We know that Councillors have already seen at least one alternative design and in the interest of full transparency and collaboration, we ask that all alternative designs and suitable sites are made available for the wider community to view. It is difficult to be collaborative if the relevant, up to date information is withheld from the interested parties and the general public. It is also difficult to understand why it is taking Council so long to make a decision on the car park sale or leasing when over 90 percent of the 750 submissions were against the proposal. We look forward to working with Beyond Housing to plan this project holistically, and appropriately address the housing crisis in our community ensuring a better outcome for the community. Robin Knaggs Shepparton

CREATIVE, MEASURED CAMPAIGN The art in reading the ‘letters to the editor’ feature lies in trying to pick what alliegences are held by the writer.

We welcome Letters to the Editor but they are not guaranteed to be included and may be edited for reasons of style or content. Letters will not be eligible for consideration if they contain defamatory material, or information of a personal nature which is not in the public domain.

This is particularly true during election time. Well let me be completely upftront about this, I am a member of the Liberal Party and proudly supporting Steve Brooks to be the next member for Nicholls. I ask that you allow me the opportunity to explain just one of the reasons why you should vote for Steve and why he will be an excellent member of parliament. Some of the other campaigns have spent enormous amounts of money. This makes me wonder where their money has come from and what their donors want in return? Steve’s campaign has been more measured. Instead of buying heaps of billboards, Steve has adopted a more communitybased approach. Steve has been meeting the community and asking if they will help put up a corflute, for example. He has also placed an emphasis on a more modern approach employing digital media as well as editorial comment. Steve knows that in advertising, as in life, merely throwing bucket loads of money at something mat be easy but rarely provides the best results. This type of creativity, prudence, and plain hard work are what we all want from our representatives and that is why I will be voting for Steve Brooks and encourage you to do the same. PLAN TO PROTECT AUSTRALIA To the Editor, The Government’s duty is to protect Australian citizens, provide secu rit y,

physically, economically and health wise and protect our freedoms. They have failed. The Government removed freedom with vaccine mandates (using experimental vaccines against the known scientific method and evidencebased medicine) and allowing lockdowns which destroyed small business causing enormous economic, psychological, social and educational damage. The top world epidemiologists had warned against this. We now have a debt near $1 Trillion, a shadow mental health pandemic and a destruction of living standards. Australians are facing rising costs of living and future interest rate rises. 40% of home owners are under mortgage distress and will default if interest rates rise to 4%. The Major parties have not addressed the deficit at all or plans to protect us from rising interest rates. The United Australia Party have the following policies to save Australia: • Remove mandates, lockdowns, passports (regain freedom over your body and life) • 15% export license on iron ore to eliminate the deficit over 20 years • 3% max interest rate on current homeowner mortgages • Australian superfunds to invest $1Trillion back i nto Aust ral ia f rom overseas investments • 20% tax reduction to people living 200 km from cities to encourage regional investment, manufacturing, and lure workers • $180/fortnight increase in pension to protect from inflation • Water rights for users only, remove buybacks, develop the Bradfield scheme to waterproof Australia and Murray Darling

SHEPPARTON SENIORS LET DOWN Dear Editor, The day-to-day life and wellbeing of Seniors living throughout Australia has been so hard and is getting harder, but especially living in the Federal Seat of Nicholls, where the Federal Member has sat back, done nothing and allowed a tragedy to take place since December 2019. Approximately 60 senior men and women on Home Care Packages (HCP) used to attend a program called Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) funded by the current Federal Government Minister Richard Colbeck and administered and run by the Greater Shepparton City Council (GSCC). Prior to December 2019, those 60 senior men and women on HCPs paid the full amount once a month by an invoice from GSCC and was paid from their HCPs. All other senior men and women who attended were subsidised by CHSP and also paid once a month by an invoice from GSCC. Along came Minister Richard Colbeck’s department and instructed those 60 senior men and women on HCPs that they could NO longer attend. Then, as if they were doing a backflip, as of July 1, 2020, Minister Colbeck’s department stated clients on a Level 1 to 4 HCP who have transitioned from the CHSP may continue to access their existing CHSP social support group on an

ongoing basis to allow the continuity of social relationships. This only applies to clients attending a pre-existing CHSP social support group service and who transition to an HCP after July 1, 2020. However, clients who have transitioned to a HCP after July 1, 2020, will be eligible to continue to attend CHSP social support group activities at the subsidised client contribution rate. Clients who have transitioned to a HCP before this date would be charged on a full cost recovery basis, should they wish to attend CHSP social support group activities, and if the organisation has capacity for them to return.

As of July 1, 2020, the Council had not filled vacancies left by those 60 senior men and women on HCPs. The Council had the capacity for them all to return. Now here comes the real kick in the guts for all seniors as of June 30, 2022, Council will NO longer be running the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) and just maybe another organisation might setup and create a new Social Connections Program for all Seniors to enjoy where everyone can come and enjoy what they once had. is stepping into his new role as manager of Scooters & Mobility Northern Victoria this week. Rodney says that over his career, the greatest highlight has been the friendships he’s made with both staff members and with customers. “It’s been fantastic to be a part of their lives just as much as they’ve been a part of mine,” he said. Rodney’s retail career started when he was 20 years old. He says that he has spent a third of his life in the retail industry, and that he wouldn’t change any of it. Opportunities in the industry have taught him understanding and compassion, and the value of building relationships and being

able to help others find products they really need. “Having a family of my own changed my way of thinking, as it does for most people. You don’t know what people are going through but in my role, I could be a positive person for others and offer a hand.” “The team I’ve worked with has been the most wonderful team. I couldn’t be more thankful for their compassion, their friendship and their trust,” Rodney said. “I’d like to say a massive big thanks to everyone who has shopped at the Good Guys. I could have worked there forever and been very happy. I will miss it but I’m excited for this new challenge, managing Scooters & Mobility Northern Victoria.”

Stand out new program for students SHEPPARTON has been selected as one of the first regional sites to deliver a new ‘Design by Nature’ education program about Biomimicry, using nature’s solutions to solve human challenges. 60 students from Guthrie Street Primary School and 30 students from Bright P-12 School participated in the special education program, which is more than a year in the making. The program has been made possible thanks to relationship building efforts between the Melbourne-based Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria (RBGV), the Friends of the Australian Botanic Gardens Shepparton (FABGS), and the RiverConnect program, to create local opportunities for students in the Shepparton region to participate in RBGV’s education programs. Jill Grant, member of the Friends of the Australian Botanic Gardens Shepparton committee said, “The Friends of the Australian Botanic Gardens Shepparton have been ‘chatting’ with the education team from RBGV

for over 12 months regarding education days at the Botanic Gardens. We feel privileged to be chosen for their new push to reach regional students. This should be an amazing day for students and teachers, and the Botanic Gardens volunteers can expand our knowledge and horizons in so many different

ways, and looking at biomimicry is one of these ways.” ‘Design by Nature’ is funded through the Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series (VCES) initiative that provides opportunities for Victorian public school students to participate in high-ability learning programs.

IN 2019, the Victorian Government introduced new legislation to make the spa and swimming pool registration mandatory. The first round of inspections are due by June 1st 2022. Pool and Spa barriers are designed to reduce the likelihood of drownings and near drownings. As such, to be able to apply the mandated requirements in the standards to ensure compliance when undertaking inspections is a huge responsibility and not one to be taken lightly. I began training to become a registered inspector in 2020. In January 2022 my application was accepted by the VBA and my license as a Building Inspector - Pool Safety was issued. A Shepparton local for the past 23 years, many local pool owners may know me from my time

ENSURING POOL SAFETY… Row is a licensed Pool Safety Building Inspector, who runs her own business conducting safety inspections on pools and spas. Photo: Supplied. training and working at Poolwerx in Shepparton. I have extensive knowledge of the pool and spa maintenance and service industry, and barrier compliance felt like a natural progression in my career. North Vic Pool Safety Compliance is a one woman show. I answer the calls and emails, I book the job, I do the inspection, and I sort out the clients’ relevant documents. I am a proud supporter of the Hunter Boyle Swim Foundation; a cause close to the hearts of many Shepparton families. Donations from every pool that I inspect goes towards the foundation, providing swimming lessons for kids and training for swimming teachers. Call Row at 0413 580 937

Shepparton United faces a big challenge as it searches for its first win of 2022 when it travels to Euroa. The Demons were reasonably competitive against Rochester last weekend and coach Paul Serra will turn to the skipper Kyle Clarke, Joel Serra, Adam Pigatto, Mitchell Roche and Damien Pigatto to lead the way. Euroa produced a solid four quarter win over the Swans to make it two wins on the bounce. Coach Scott Rowan will be hoping his group can continue their winning form against the visitors. Tip: Euroa.

the season but the young group may find the challenge tough, especially if they can’t get back some of their experienced campaigners who missed last week’s loss. Lachlan Smith, Cooper Vick, Mitchell Gugliotti, Thomas Holman and Jason Morgan were strong contributors in the win last weekend and they will again be important for the reigning premier. For the Swans, Zac Clohesy, coach Andrew Riordan, Zac Banch, Mitchell Bell and Isaiah Jones will be looking to continue their good form to give them a chance of an upset win. Tip: Kyabram.

GVL netball round 5 By Sam Saracino EUROA VS. SHEPPARTON UNITED There is a huge test for Euroa, and coach, Ellie Warnock will welcome the challenge of the undefeated Demons today. Ellie will tell her girls not to fear playing the high-flying Demons. Just like they did when they trumped the more fancied Seymour outfit in round 3. Euroa will give as good as it gets, but in the wash-up, the experience of United will prove the difference. Tip: United.

some really good netball. Led by the Byrne sisters - Claire and Bridget down in defence coupled by the strong work of Greta Pearson and goaler Bianca Willis, the visitors are likely to cause the home team plenty of headaches. That is sure to give the Lions plenty of confidence going into this contest against the Murray Bombers outfit. This should be a cracking game and the team that plays the full four quarters will claim the win. Tip: Echuca.

SHEPPARTON SWANS VS. KYABRAM Shepparton Swans will be chasing its first win of the season when it welcomes Kyabram. Kyabram is a much-improved outfit in 2022, having won one of its four games and drawing one other. They have lost their past two games, so coach Sara Kent will be urging her girls to make the most of their opportunities against a young and depleted Swans unit. Eliva Hall has been in good form for Kyabram and she will look to inspire her team-mates to keep the Swans winless in 2022. Tip: Shepparton Swans.

SHEPPARTON VS. MANSFIELD After back-to-back defeats to start the season, Shepparton will look to continue to get its season back on track when it plays the winless Mansfield today. The Eagles will find this challenge tough, especially that the Bears have managed to get some confidence from wins over the Swans and Tatura in recent weeks. If they continue that form, the Bears will continue its climb up the ladder. Tip: Shepparton.

So many positives in the narrow loss to United, but she would have wondered what went wrong in the second half against the Lions. I think they can skip past Tatura and keep them winless in 2022. Tip: Mooroopna.

MOOROOPNA VS. TATURA After a fantastic start to the season with two wins, Mooroopna has lost its past two matches. First to the Demons and then to the Lions, which would have left coach Di Hanslow with plenty to ponder.

BENALLA VS. ROCHESTER This should be a fantastic contest between two of the league’s improving teams. Benalla has won its past three games while Rochester has been reasonably competitive, drawing one and winning one of its past three games.

SEYMOUR VS. ECHUCA Seymour faces another premiership fancy when it welcomes the undefeated Echuca. Coach, Steph Vick has the girls playing

It did lose to United last weekend. But that’s no disgrace as most teams will lose to the Demons. For Rochester, Morgan Dingwall, Ella Roulston and young gun Teal Hocking will be important if the Tigers are to bounce back to the winners’ circle. Kelsey Palpratt was brilliant in the Saints’ win over Kyabram last weekend. If she can continue that form and get support from mid-courter Hayley Martiniello and Tilly Lang, then the home team can get past the Tigers and consolidate their place in the top six. Tip: Benalla.
