Shepparton scores international soccer bid THIS is the first time since 2009 that Australia has hosted a qualification group, or any AFC youth tournaments, and this is the first time the event will be held in a regional area.

“We will experience the Australian Under-17 national team, commonly referred to as the Joeys, compete against China, Northern Mariana Islands, and Cambodia in a series of six games, with the team that tops this group automatically qualifying for the AFC Under-17 Asian Cup in 2023,” said mayor Shane Sali.

“There’s no better regional location to hold a competition of this level. Greater Shepparton underwent a game changing $21 million Shepparton Sports Precinct redevelopment in 2017. For the football lovers, this includes a $10 million investment into the community football complex.

“With approximately 3,000 spectators anticipated for the qualifying matches and over one million in economic stimulation, this event will see people from Victoria, interstate, and international visitors spending time and money in our region.”

Football Australia CEO James Johnson travelled from Sydney to announce the news. He said bringing the qualifiers to Shepparton is part of Football Australia’s new strategy to bring more international content to the regions.

fans from across the region and further afield to witness some of Australia’s and Asia’s best emerging talent, who are following the same elite pathways as household names in world football, creating a real ‘I was there’ moment for those attending matches in October,” said Mr Johnson.

Group G is one of 10 Groups that will be contested concurrently, featuring 44 countries from across Asia, all vying for 16 spots in the 2023 AFC U17 Asian Cup. Further information will be announced at a later date.

Next chapter for committee THE Committee for Greater Shepparton (C4GS) is entering its second decade and at the same time, welcoming new stalwarts to the board.

Leigh Findlay of CAF Consulting and Sarah Thompson of GV Water are the new chair and deputy chair for C4GS. The board has also expanded with the appointment of AC Food's Andrew Mann.

After three years as the board chair, Lesley Hart of Dawes and Vary has stepped down but will remain as a board member.

"Lesley's exceptional leadership across a very challenging few years has ensured the Committee ends its first decade in great shape," said Leigh.

Incoming deputy chair, Sarah Thompson, believes C4GS has played an important role in

building Shepparton's reputation and influence within state and federal governments and policy makers.

"Our region is extremely well positioned for the future, and I am really looking forward to continuing the Committee's great work," she said.

Andrew Mann, AC Food's general manager, joins the board and brings his expertise in

agriculture and rural banking with him.

"Our board is well connected with the region's strengths, and we are looking forward to working with our recently appointed CEO, Lindy Nieuwenhuizen, the wider membership, and our elected representatives, including former CEO and Member for Nicholls, Sam Birrell, to support the region's ongoing success," said Leigh.

Waterway update The Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority (GBCMA) is delivering water for the environment downstream of the Goulburn Weir in the Lower Goulburn River.

The delivery started mid-July and will continue into August.

GBCMA environmental water and wetlands manager, Simon Casanelia, said the water release was referred to as a winter fresh.

“A fresh is flow that increases the height of the river for a short period of time,” Mr Casanelia said.

“This winter fresh will help maintain the health and functioning of the Goulburn River by depositing seed rich sediment on the banks which helps stabilising plants to grow. It also helps move sediments from the riverbed to maintain habitat for water bugs and native fish.

The fresh is planned to coincide with natural high flows where possible.

By Deanne Jeffers BILL Winters has created a local legacy, helping more than 400 learner drivers to obtain their P-plates as Berry Street’s L2P program coordinator.

L2P is a community-based program developed to assist eligible young people who otherwise do not have access to a supervising driver or an appropriate vehicle, to gain driving experience and confidence behind the wheel.

“We’ve made a big difference as a group. It has had its challenges, but we have managed to create a successful program that has been extremely rewarding. None of it would be possible without trainers, volunteers, administrators, and all the people working to develop this program as it has grown over the years,” said Bill.

“Having survived a motor crash myself, I looked at driver education 12 years ago, and I thought there must be a better way to educate young people and to keep road users safe.

“There have been highs and lows, but for the most part, it has been an extremely positive experience working with younger people to help

them gain driving experience.”

The L2P Program currently operates in Greater Shepparton, Moira, Mitchell, Strathbogie and Mitchell shires, and they are always looking for more mentors to assist taking young learner drivers for drives to assist them to get their hours up and graduate to P-plates.

Mentors should be people who are interested in working with young people. Berry Street will

help you obtain a police check and Working with Children card, and provide training, insurance, fuel, and a car to teach your mentee.

Each year around 300,000 people across Australia volunteer on National Tree Day to plant trees and to engage the wider community in educational activities that promote a greater understanding of the natural environment.

SNOW season is well and truly upon us and there is nothing quite so exhilarating as heading to the Alpine regions to enjoy the winter wonderland and all the thrills and experiences it offers. However, while the region is stunning and provides families and individuals from all walks of life with natural beauty and adventure, Parks Victoria is ardent in communicating to the visiting public about the strict need to be vigilant and prepared for all manner of weather-related hazard and unpredictable conditions.

Dramatic weather changes are common and should not be underestimated when planning a winter trip. Visitors must be prepared for sudden changes in conditions and remain alert to hazards including

unstable snow, rising river levels, steep icy slopes, avalanches and extreme weather.

Wave of vandalism hits city

By Deanne Jeffers R ESIDEN TS have expressed disappointment over graffiti occurring around Greater Shepparton.

“Disgraceful. It is vandalism,” said Merrilyn Pinner on Facebook.

The Adviser spoke with Senior Constable Marks at Shepparton Police Station, who is investigating vandalism that occurred at the skatepark.

“I would say that reports of vandalism and graffiti are disproportionally high,” he said.

“We have had four reports in Shepparton for graffiti, which doesn’t sound like much, but this is much higher than normal “Graffiti is generally underreported, unless an individual is reporting criminal damage to their own property.”

In response to a recent survey conducted by local police, Shepparton Police have

increased street patrols and introduced a bike patrol unit, for greater police presence to curb crime.

“The sole responsibility of the recently introduced bike patrol unit is to provide a public presence and to encourage public engagement. If anyone sees something that is worth reporting, like graffiti or antisocial behaviour, you should let them know or contact Shepparton Police,” said Snr Constable Marks.

Removing graffiti is regarded as the most effective way to deter further vandalism.

Schools, traders or business groups, sporting groups, and service clubs may access Greater Shepparton City Council’s free Wipeout Community Trailer to remove and deter graffiti.

Council also has a small group of trained volunteers who can remove graffiti from private homes. Residents can report graffiti

to Council and volunteers will schedule the work. If you report an incident of graffiti on private property, police will supply a free graffiti removal kit (limit one per household).

If the graffiti cannot be removed using the free kit, present your police report to Council’s customer service desk to receive a $50 paint voucher for the cleanup.

Graffiti is a criminal offence. Marking publicly visible graffiti, or offensive graffiti, is punishable by up to two years in prison and a maximum fine of $43,618.

Toy recycling comes to Shepparton IF your toy room looks like it's been ransacked by a pack of wild monkeys, it's probably time for a cull.

Greater Shepparton residents now have the opportunity to recycle broken plastic, metal and plush children's toys for free and save them from landfill.

The new Toys for Joy initiative is available at Big W at the Shepparton Marketplace and facilitated by specialist recycling company, TerraCycle.

Terracycle collects the toys and breaks them down into materials which can be used to make all sorts of new items, from play equipment to home insulation.

If pre-loved toys are in good shape, but no longer wanted, community members should first consider donating the toys to family support organisations, childcare centres or opportunity shops. Where this is not possible, recycling them is the next best option.

All brands of toys are accepted by the Toys for Joy program and electronic toys can be recycled once any batteries are removed, but large items such as bicycles and scooters as well as wooden toys cannot be recycled as part of this program.

"Toys are a common item disposed of in kerbside bins, but Council do not have the facilities to recycle them," said Greater Shepparton City Council Director Infrastructure Gary Randhawa.

"It's exciting to see new initiatives like this one available in our region to help reduce waste and save usable materials from landfill."

Dear Editor, THE fabulous Meals on Wheels program has b een prov ided by t he G reater Shepparton City Council for many years, providing excellent meals catered for by Mi Kitchen here in Shepparton.

They have had Federal Government funding cut which means residents in the city now have to rely on Lite’n Easy frozen meals from the government appointed provider Community Accessibility in Shepparton.

This is the only option offered to recipients. This doesn’t suit everyone for different reasons. Meals will be delivered weekly and freezer storage is necessary.

Some homes are not as secure as others to have meals left at the front door, with theft posing a risk.

For myself, I took up the program when I was recuperating from surgery some time ago. I no longer ‘need’ the service but have kept it for the convenience of a nutritional daily meal.

However, there are residents who do not have the freezer capacity to store meals in bulk and there are some who cannot manage heating meals on their own.

This is what made the GSCC MOWheels service so convenient. With the new changes, I am afraid there will be some who will go without meals rather than accept the new option.

It is also much more expensive. We

were charged $11.50 for a three-course meal, hot or cold (no salads offered by Lite’nEasy) as opposed to $15 for the same; or $11 for the main meal or $13 for soup and main.

I’m hoping you might be able to give this situation some publicity with the hope of pressuring the Federal Government to bring back funding for the Meals on Wheels program.

It is believed that there are ten regional Council and shires effected.

First notification regarding the change was given to recipients by the GSCC on 9 June 2022. The takeover begins on July 17.

LOCKUP RETURNED TO RUSHWORTH...

After 100 years Rushworth’s lockup has returned home.

History returning home after 100 years C ontrib uted by Nick Buz z a , L ost Rushworth FIVE years ago, after a great deal of negotiation and planning involving DELWP and Campaspe shire, the old police lock up which was originally from Rushworth was returned to its rightful place, after being away for nearly 100 years.

The story is that in 1915 a constable in the newly proclaimed town of Tongala requested a lockup, as at the time prisoners had to be taken to Kyabram to be imprisoned.

Subsequently, a spare lockup at Rushworth was sent to Tongala. Which says something about Rushworth during that time, in that they had two lockups for the troublesome Rushworth residents.

The lockup was sent to Tongala in May 1915

The Tongala Lions Club, believing it was worth preservation, secured it from the police department and relocated it to the Golden Cow Dairy Centre in 2003.

When the Golden Cow Dairy Centre closed it remained there until the story was told of its origin to the Rushworth Court House revival crew, who then organised it to be brought home to Rushworth.

It is not in its original position as that would have been behind the old Rushworth Police station somewhere, however its current location next to the courthouse makes it another great tourist attraction in Rushworth. Another piece of Rushworth history returning to the town after 100 years.

Last call for timely conversation EXPERIENCE conflict through the eyes of leading Australian artists, which are being brought to life in a series of talks presented by local academic and historian, Dr Darius von Güttner.

The Australian War Memorials’ touring exhibition, Art in Conflict, was debuted at Shepparton Art Museum (SAM) earlier this year and will leave the region in August.

A showcase of diverse responses to war, Art in Conflict includes more than 70 artworks of diverse styles and themes. Comprised of a dense collection of artworks, including new bodies of work launched for the exhibition, SAM Talks: Art in Conflict is ideal for students and teachers, and anyone interested in art, history, or multi-media.

“This exhibition is incredibly timely. People are increasingly discussing conflict and there is a lot of fear about what is happening in Ukraine,” said Darius, who is a historian of East Central Europe that has an interest in the transmission of ideas and global history.

The base amount has increased to $675 for individuals earning less than $37,000 and the full amount is $1,500 for individuals earning between $48,000 and $90,000."

Liquidarium is a new art commission

by Vera Möller that combines collage and sculpture to create a fantastical freshwater la nds c ap e i nspi red by t he v ibra nt ecology found on SAM’s doorstep and in surrounding Goulburn Valley wetlands.

“T he Liquidarium environment is a complete 3D fantasy world, but it is reminiscent of the diorama you would typically find in Natural History Museums,” said SAM exhibitions curator, Jessica O’Farrell.

“This exhibition encourages children and adults alike to be curious, triggers our imagination of what lives in a natural ecosystem and prompts us venture into the

freshwater environments that lay just outside SAM.” The young and young at heart are invited to experience a wetland from the imagined perspective of a small frog, living amongst exaggerated plant forms that have been dramatically increased in size.

The whole community may contribute to the exhibition, with monthly hands-on workshops being conducted in the Children’s Gallery until October where attendees may create their own Liquidarium-inspired flora and fauna display.

Sessions run 11am to 3pm, with one session each month until October on Thursdays August 11, September 22, and the final session will run Saturday, October 1.

The workshops are free, and no bookings are necessary. All materials are supplied by SAM.

Contributed by Ben Ladson ANOTHER fantastic day of tennis saw many great matches played. Justin and Kieran shared the spoils on Court 1, while Brett dominated all comers on Court 2. Court 3 saw Corey victorious, while the welcome mat wasn't out for long as John clinched Court 4 on debut.

Court 5 saw four players separated by less than four games, with Donna emerging victorious.

If you'd like to have a hit of tennis on Saturdays at 1.15pm, it's just $2 with new balls at 4 Packham Street, Shepparton. Newcomers are always welcome.

GVL Netball Round 15 SHEPPARTON UNITED V MOOROOPNA Two of this year’s premiership contenders will lock horns with the stakes high with the winner going into second on the ladder.

Mooroopna currently sits in second place ahead of its rival by percentage both on 44 points.

United comes into this game off the back of a big win over its arch rival Shepparton, which was led by a best on court shooting performance from Jessie Barnes.

Barnes was outstanding and she was ably supported by Sophie Garner and defender Laura Cole.

This trio will have a big job on their hands and coach Kara Blizzard will be hoping they can dominate again.

The Cats were pushed all the way in the first part of the split round, eventually getting past Kyabram by nine goals.

Leading the way in the win was Bree Hanslow, Shelby Britten and Elle Brooks.

If these girls can get involved and have an influence on the contest, then the Cats will be right in the contest.

Not much will separate these teams at the final whistle, and it will come down to who can get their goals in.

I am going for the Demons as a thriller.

Tip: Shepparton United.

Benalla sits a game outside the top six while Rochester is six points adrift of sixth placed Shepparton.

The Tigers were able to adjust without regular shooter Morgan Dignwell who will miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury.

Coach Rachel Whipp moved the versatile Maddie Egglestone into the attacking ring, while A-grade debutant Poppy Palmer took up Egglestone’s usual position as goalkeeper.

Mid-courter Charlee Roulston was outstanding in the win over Mansfield, and she will be looking to continue that form along with Ellie Cuttriss who was able to have an influence in the win over the Eagles.

Benalla coach Kellie Keen lead from the front in the big win over Tatura.

If she can continue that form and get the support of Sally Washfold and Chloe Hill, the Saints will keep the pressure on the sixth placed Bears.

Tip: Benalla.

MANSFIELD V SHEPPARTON Shepparton needs to keep winning to ensure it qualifies for the finals.

And it gets an opportunity to bounce back from its loss to arch rival Shepparton United when it takes on the winless Mansfield.

Mic-courter Jacinta Todd, defender Ash Cann and shooter Ella Sidebottom will be the key Bears that will need to lead from the front to curb the influence of Grace Hood, Ellie Kipping and Isabella Riley as the home team looks to cause an upset and win its first game of 2022.

Tip: Shepparton.

ROCHESTER V BENALLA ECHUCA V TATURA Mathematically both of these teams can play finals if they can get on a roll and string some wins in a row.

Both come into the contest off the back of strong wins in the second part of the split round.

Echuca will be looking to bounce back onto the winners’ list to keep its top two aspirations alive.

While Tatura will be desperate to chalk up its second win of the season as it looks to bounce back from defeat at the hands

of Benalla.

The home team need to turnaround its loss from the first part of the split round and coach Steph Vick will look to Belinda Lees, Bianca Willis and Jac James to lead the way while the Bulldogs will look to Steph Smith-Gorrie, Elise Boyer ad Molly Kennedy to try and inspire the visitors.

SEYMOUR V KYABRAM Seymour will be looking to consolidate its place at the top of the ladder when it welcomes Kyabram.

Kyabram is only playing for pride but that said Elivia Hall and Chicky Vick have been two shining lights for them.

They will be looking to lead the way and take the match to the all-conquering and well-balanced Lions.

Ellie O’Sullivan and Jessica Lallo were outstanding in goals to ensure victory when the game was called off in the third quarter last round against the Swans.

I think if the shooting duo can get enough supply, then that should be enough to help the Lions bank another four points.

EUROA V SHEPPARTON SWANS Euroa will be looking to build on its last start win over Echuca when it takes on the Shepparton Swans.

The Swans will be desperate for victory to run in contention to play finals.

But to do so, they will need to do everything right from here and they will most likely have to do it without key player Klarindah Hudson who hurt herself in the loss to the Lions last round.

On the other hand, Euroa will look to Kellie Davidson, Tylah Marchbank and Bree Poole to continue their good form and curb the influence of Hannah Garner, Shinea Sali and Sophie Atkinson.
